Plant-Microbial Interactions Are Strong Determinants Of Plant Population And Community Dynamics, Yan-Yi Anny Chung 9485698 May 2017

Plant-Microbial Interactions Are Strong Determinants Of Plant Population And Community Dynamics, Yan-Yi Anny Chung 9485698

Biology ETDs

Plant-microbial interactions are ubiquitous and yet the consequences of these interactions on plant population and community dynamics are relatively unknown. Here, we used two different classes of plant-microbial interactions to examine their effects on key plant population and community characteristics such as commonness and rarity, competition and coexistence, as well as community stability.

Vertically-transmitted endophytes had stage-dependent effects on the population growth of two grass species Poa sylvestris and Poa alsodes, and generally increased host population growth rates. However, it was the intrinsic demographic advantage of P. sylvestris that allowed its population to grow at a much faster rate …

A Study Of Dislocation Networks In Gasb On Gaas Using Transmission Electron Microscopy, Darryl M. Shima May 2017

A Study Of Dislocation Networks In Gasb On Gaas Using Transmission Electron Microscopy, Darryl M. Shima

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

The growth of GaSb on GaAs is of interest for a variety of scientific and technological applications. Some evidence suggests that low threading dislocation density GaSb can be grown directly on GaAs through arrays of periodic edge misfit dislocations. However, significant conflicting data also exist. This work seeks to clarify the question through transmission electron microscopy analysis of GaSb grown on GaAs. The results of this work show that the single strategy of direct growth of GaSb on GaAs results in dislocation densities too high for devices. A secondary strategy of dislocation filtering layers is introduced to further reduce threading …

The Cost Of Direct And Indirect Potable Water Reuse In A Medium Sized Inland Community, Jason Glenn Herman May 2017

The Cost Of Direct And Indirect Potable Water Reuse In A Medium Sized Inland Community, Jason Glenn Herman

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

In the face of increasing population, development pressures, and climate change, many regions around the world face freshwater shortages. Planned potable water reuse can improve sustainability and reliability of water supplies by providing drinking water from wastewater. Most potable reuse research has focused on large coastal communities with relatively high mean household incomes. However, the US Department of Interior predicts that “hot spots” of conflict over water in the arid West are “highly likely” in numerous small-to-medium-sized inland communities with low-to-moderate household income levels. Potable reuse options may be different for larger, wealthier coastal communities as compared to small-to-medium-sized inland …

Detection Of Pheromone Laying Event In Foraging Data Of Harvester Ants Using Change Point Analysis Method, Safeeul Bashir Safee Apr 2017

Detection Of Pheromone Laying Event In Foraging Data Of Harvester Ants Using Change Point Analysis Method, Safeeul Bashir Safee

Computer Science ETDs

Communication is an important factor in the foraging performance of social insects, such as ants. During foraging, ants keep track of food sources by using memory (site fidelity) or by communicating through pheromones. Previous field experiments showed that the rate of seed collection depends on the distribution of food in the environment. If food is spatially clustered, then it is beneficial for ants recruit nest mates to collect seeds from large clusters. However, we do not know when the recruitment occurs in natural ant population. To explore this question, we used a power law distribution to arrange seeds in piles …
