Defining High Functioning Ocd (Hfocd), Samuel Meyer Apr 2017

Defining High Functioning Ocd (Hfocd), Samuel Meyer

Psychology ETDs

Individuals with moderate-to-severe form of OCD symptoms may display exceptional creativity and productivity. This study aimed to define the characteristics of individuals who demonstrate high life achievement/creativity and display clinically significant OC symptomatology. The main hypothesis was that OC phenomena is significantly correlated with high levels of creativity, and that individuals displaying this characteristic will demonstrate a neurocognitive profile similar to subjects with clinical OCD.

We investigated cognitive, intellectual, emotional and clinical characteristics of real-world high-achievers (HAs, n=28) as compared to “standard achievers” (SAs, n=29) by measuring OC symptoms, depressive moods, levels of creativity/flexibility, Verbal and Visual-Spatial Reasoning proficiency and …

The Modulation Of Reward To Nicotine And Ethanol By Sex And Stage Of Exposure, Kyle L. Dixon Apr 2017

The Modulation Of Reward To Nicotine And Ethanol By Sex And Stage Of Exposure, Kyle L. Dixon

Psychology ETDs

Tobacco and alcohol are among the most widely used and abused drugs in America, resulting in disastrous health consequences and a massive resource drain on society. Nicotine (the primary reinforcing component in tobacco) and alcohol are often used together, though there is limited research on exposure to both drugs at the same time. The present study attempted to fill this gap in knowledge by examining the reward for a cocktail of nicotine and alcohol in male and female Long-Evans rats with differing histories of drug exposure. The conditioned place preference paradigm was used to examine the effects of sex as …

Functional Neural Connectivity Associated With Moral Processing In Healthy And Antisocial Samples, Samantha Jean Fede Apr 2017

Functional Neural Connectivity Associated With Moral Processing In Healthy And Antisocial Samples, Samantha Jean Fede

Psychology ETDs

Although research finds that brain abnormalities during moral decisions underlie traits that lead to crime, understanding of these neural dynamics is limited. Here we use two samples to explore the role network engagement and components during moral processing. We used independent component analysis and functional network connectivity analysis to examine hemodynamic response during an fMRI task of moral processing. Eighty-four community and 539 incarcerated adult men and women participated; MANCOVA and machine learning algorithms were used to identify individual and group differences in both samples. We found patterns of neural engagement and connectivity consistent with proposed models of moral cognition …

Cultural Belief In The Supernatural From 500 To 1500: Change Over Time, Significance, And Dispersion Of Ideas From Augustine To Shakespeare, Stephanie Victoria Violette Apr 2017

Cultural Belief In The Supernatural From 500 To 1500: Change Over Time, Significance, And Dispersion Of Ideas From Augustine To Shakespeare, Stephanie Victoria Violette

History ETDs

This project is an amalgamation of case studies, arguing that not only did the supernatural permeate every level of medieval society, but that its potential for analysis and interpretation is largely unexplored. These case studies include: an analysis of the Church Fathers works, including Tertullian’s De testimonio animae, Augustine of Hippo’s De cura pro mortuis gerenda, and Gregory the Great’s Dialogi, addressing the variation in these works’ theological ideas about the soul; an analysis of the works of Gregory of Tours (his Liber vitae Patrum and Historia Francorum), which reflect popular beliefs as opposed to those …

From Sand Creek To Somalia: Black Bodies In Denver’S Post-Industrial Urban Cultural Re-Imagination, Webster Matjaka Apr 2017

From Sand Creek To Somalia: Black Bodies In Denver’S Post-Industrial Urban Cultural Re-Imagination, Webster Matjaka

American Studies ETDs

In this research project I situate black experience in the mid-sized post-industrial city of Denver, Colorado within the city’s colonial history in order to highlight some broader historical, global as well as local and national developments that, although seemingly unconnected, have a significant impact on urban social life today, in the case at hand, black urban experience. As people who have been displaced by the main axis of modern European global capitalist expansion: colonialism and slave trade, Native Americans, African Americans and recent African immigrants in Denver occupy a globalized socio-historical space of Euro-American socio-political domination that, in complex ways, …

Relationship Between Structure And Functional Connectivity Within The Default Mode Network, Andrei A. Vakhtin Apr 2017

Relationship Between Structure And Functional Connectivity Within The Default Mode Network, Andrei A. Vakhtin

Psychology ETDs

We proposed a novel measure of conceptualizing dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) in the human brain using flexibility of functional connectivity (fFC), which captures the variance of functional connectivity across time. In task-free fMRI scans (N = 122), this measure was demonstrated to correspond to the underlying structural connectivity (SC) within the default mode network (DMN), while static functional connectivity (sFC) did so to a relatively low degree. As SC likely does not develop to facilitate task-free brain function, but rather to integrate information during cognitive engagement, we argue that fFC can estimate the potential functional connectivity exhibited outside of …

Developing Fluorogen Activating Protein-Fluorescent Protein Fret Pairs For Live Cell Imaging, Genevieve Kate Phillips Apr 2017

Developing Fluorogen Activating Protein-Fluorescent Protein Fret Pairs For Live Cell Imaging, Genevieve Kate Phillips

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Fluorogen activating proteins (FAPs) are genetically encoded tags made from single chain antibody fragments (scFv) designed to bind fluorogens with high specificity. Both the fluorogen and FAP can be modified to provide flexibility in properties such as affinity, membrane permeability, spectra, and quantum yield. The fluorogen Malachite Green (MG) has two excitation peaks, the maximum at 630 nm and a secondary peak at 450 nm. The emission spectra of blue-emitting fluorescence proteins, such as mCerulean (mCer), overlap with the MG secondary peak, generating a FRET pair with large Stokes shift emission. Using 405 nm excitation of mCer, we observe acceptor …

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton Apr 2017

Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Among Pediatric Nurses And The Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Maribeth Thornton

Nursing ETDs

Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are two inter-related concepts. Individuals in helping professions may occasionally face compassion fatigue from giving so much of themselves to others. Compassion fatigue has been studied in a variety of settings: medical, social work, nursing, law enforcement, and fire departments, to name a few. While some researchers have studied nurses, little published work has focused exclusively on nurses who care for specialty pediatric populations. Additionally, there is scant research on whether compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are associated with patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of compassion satisfaction and …

Pattern And Process In The Radiation Of Ground-Dwelling Squirrels, Bryan Stephen Mclean Apr 2017

Pattern And Process In The Radiation Of Ground-Dwelling Squirrels, Bryan Stephen Mclean

Biology ETDs

What causes biological diversity to be unevenly apportioned across the Tree of Life? The pattern is widespread and well-characterized; but our understanding of processes underlying the taxonomic, phenotypic, and ecological disparities of clades remains incomplete. At least some of this disparity is due to clade-specific differences in the ability to respond to ecological opportunity, whereby access to, and exploitation of, different resources in ecological time drives evolutionary divergence and adaptive radiation. However, not all clades respond equivalently to ecological opportunity, and considerable heterogeneity therefore exists in diversification patterns across radiations.

This dissertation focuses on patterns and processes of diversification in …

Cancer Modeling: From Optimal Cell Renewal To Immunotherapy, Cesar L. Alvarado Apr 2017

Cancer Modeling: From Optimal Cell Renewal To Immunotherapy, Cesar L. Alvarado

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Cancer is a disease caused by mutations in normal cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2016, an estimated 1.6 million people were diagnosed and approximately 0.5 million people died from the disease in the United States. There are many factors that shape cancer at the cellular and organismal level, including genetic, immunological, and environmental components. In this thesis, we show how mathematical modeling can be used to provide insight into some of the key mechanisms underlying cancer dynamics. First, we use mathematical modeling to investigate optimal homeostatic cell renewal in tissues such as the small intestine with an …

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin Apr 2017

Social Risks As Costly Trait Signals, Ruth E. Sarafin

Psychology ETDs

Costly signaling theory posits that people will sometimes engage in seemingly irrational behavior to show off attractive qualities about themselves. These behaviors may end in or incur a cost to the actor such that only individuals who are highly fit are able to succeed at the behavior, and therefore behavior success is an honest signal of fitness. Previous research has used costly signaling to explain human physical risk taking behaviors such as rock climbing, but the current study seeks to apply them to social risk taking, such as raising one’s hand in class. Should social risk taking prove to be …

A Community Well-Being Model: Considering Audit Scores And Social Class In Non-Hispanic White And American Indian College Students, Violette Marie Cloud Apr 2017

A Community Well-Being Model: Considering Audit Scores And Social Class In Non-Hispanic White And American Indian College Students, Violette Marie Cloud

Psychology ETDs

Although American Indian (AI) ethnic/racial identity and lack of social support have been linked with alcohol use problems in AI populations, little research has examined the impact of socioeconomic status, or the protective benefits of high ethnic identity with strong social connection in AI samples. This study developed and investigated a latent construct labeled community well-being (CWB) and tested it as a predictor of scores on the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) in a sample of non-Hispanic White (NHW) and AI college students with consideration of self-reported childhood social class (birth to 18). Using structural equation modeling (SEM) this …

Novel Indices To Quantify Freeze Tolerance In Amphibians, Jolene R. Rearick Apr 2017

Novel Indices To Quantify Freeze Tolerance In Amphibians, Jolene R. Rearick

Biology ETDs

We propose Freeze Endurance (Fend) as a new measure of the ability of amphibians to tolerate internal freezing, allowing integration of time and temperature to describe each freeze event. Use of freeze endurance as a descriptor allows direct comparison between individuals, populations, and species, and may be scaled by body size, or other characteristics, to determine if abilities to survive freezing are significantly different between groups. Thermal limit examinations have long suffered from lack of comparability between publications due to differing endpoints, measurements, equipment, and organism availability, despite the value of information yielded by such studies to understanding …

Novel Approaches To Exploring Silk Use Evolution In Spiders, Rachael Elaina Alfaro Apr 2017

Novel Approaches To Exploring Silk Use Evolution In Spiders, Rachael Elaina Alfaro

Biology ETDs

Spider silk is enigmatic, and web structure, design, and adult morphology of the spinning apparatus of spiders once informed how systematists approached the spider phylogeny. The orb-web and adaptation of viscous silk was considered a key innovation leading to rapid diversification of spiders. However, the advent of molecular techniques including recent phylogenomics studies, overturned this major paradigm in spider evolution. Clades once considered monophyletic are no more. The orb-web is not a pinnacle of evolution, and the former sister group, using cribellate silk (loops of fibrils combed from a specialized silk plate on the abdomen), is now sister to the …

Hyporheic Nitrate Uptake And Stoichiometric Limitations: Mesocosm Experiments Along A River Continuum., Vanessa A. Garayburu Caruso Apr 2017

Hyporheic Nitrate Uptake And Stoichiometric Limitations: Mesocosm Experiments Along A River Continuum., Vanessa A. Garayburu Caruso

Civil Engineering ETDs

Nutrient uptake in streams and rivers is controlled by complex transport dynamics and biogeochemical interactions, which together regulate nutrient export from watersheds. Decoupling the relative contributions of transport and biogeochemical processes to nutrient uptake at the watershed scale has been challenging due to the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of physicochemical properties. Furthermore, logistical constraints have resulted in solute-specific analyses, primarily concentrated in headwater streams, that disregard the role of stoichiometry in controlling biological uptake. We used experimental mesocosm (column experiments) along the Jemez River-Rio Grande continuum (1st-8th stream order) to isolate spatial differences in biological nitrate uptake. …

Yinka Shonibare Mbe's Critiques Of Empire And His Reception In Four Transnational Case Studies, Johanna Wild Apr 2017

Yinka Shonibare Mbe's Critiques Of Empire And His Reception In Four Transnational Case Studies, Johanna Wild

Art & Art History ETDs

In the wake of art history’s “global turn”, the installation art of Yinka Shonibare MBE has obtained vast visibility in the established centers of contemporary cultural practice in Europe and beyond. Shonibare is best known for his installations of mannequins that reenact canonized paintings and historical events culled from European modernity. Dressed in deceptively “African” Dutch Wax fabrics, Shonibare’s phenotypically ambiguous and headless mannequins ensnare audiences with a semblance of “exotic” difference, but ultimately resist the fixity of national, cultural, racial and, in some cases, gendered categorization through an incessant semiotic slippage. In his book, The Culture Game (2001), Olu …

Enediyne Derived Conjugated Polymers, Keda Hu Apr 2017

Enediyne Derived Conjugated Polymers, Keda Hu

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The advance of conjugated polymers (CPs) is largely relied on the development of new polymerization methods, the discovery of novel polymers that possess unique chemical and physical properties, and understanding of their structure-property relationship. We have employed a set of trans-enediynes (trans-EDYs) for the preparation of four series of CPs, polydiacetylenes (PDAs), platinum-segmented PDAs, polytriacetylenes (PTAs) and boron doped polyacetylenes (BPAs). The resulting polymers displayed interesting optical and electrochemical properties which could be fine-tuned by the attachment of various side chains on the EDY moieties. We have applied acyclic EDY metathesis for the synthesis of PDAs, a class of CPs …

Modeling Trait Evolutionary Processes With More Than One Gene, Huan Jiang Apr 2017

Modeling Trait Evolutionary Processes With More Than One Gene, Huan Jiang

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Phylogenetic comparative methods have been used to test evolutionary signals through trait evolutionary processes. Traditionally, biologists use one phylogenetic tree as a tool to handle dependent data for the traits of interest and hence utilize one gene only. However, it is more informative if the evolutionary processes of a trait are presented by phylogenetic trees reconstructed by the DNA alignments from more than one gene. In this work, we explain and develop two methods involving modeling the trait evolutionary processes: (a) two gene trees via the Brownian motion (BM) model; and (b) two gene trees via the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) model. …

Experiencing Peer Victimization In Secondary School: Are We Missing The Mental Health Effects In College Students?, Giovanna Eisberg Apr 2017

Experiencing Peer Victimization In Secondary School: Are We Missing The Mental Health Effects In College Students?, Giovanna Eisberg

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Every day in the United States, hundreds of thousands of students are absent from school because of fear of being bullied (Chen & Huang, 2015; Goldstein, 2012). Although bullying among school children in the United States has been declining since the 1990s (Finkelhor, 2013; Perlus, Brooks-Russell, Wang, & Iannotti, 2014), it is still a major social and mental health issue that has severe negative consequences on victims. Most of the existing literature has documented the short-term negative consequences of peer victimization in school children (Jantzer, Haffner, Parker, Resch, & Kaess, 2015; Landoll, LaGreca, Lai, Chan, & Herge, 2015; Rueger & …

A Frequency Domain Based Approach To Evaluating Manual Tracking Behavior In Parkinson’S Disease, Gabriel A. Parras Apr 2017

A Frequency Domain Based Approach To Evaluating Manual Tracking Behavior In Parkinson’S Disease, Gabriel A. Parras

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized in part by its neurodegenerative effects, which include bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity, and many other symptoms. While treatments such as Levodopa and deep brain stimulation are available, they both have associated complications. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a non-invasive method used to stimulate the vestibular nerves with electric current and it has shown promise as a possible treatment for patients with PD. In order to assess the efficacy of GVS, I examined data collected from a manual pursuit tracking experiment. The experiment involved ten patients with varying severities of PD who were asked to perform a …

Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone Apr 2017

Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone

Geography ETDs

Dozens of catastrophic forest fires have impacted New Mexican communities over the last two decades, threatening humans, property, and livelihoods. Ecologically, forest systems are stressed by historically unprecedented tree density, drought, increased temperature, and dwindling ecological diversity, further increasing fire danger. An increasingly common response to these threats is to actively manage New Mexico’s forests using mechanical tree thinning and prescribed fire, with a goal of “restoring” forests to a healthier ecological state. Restoring forests is both a scientific and cultural act. While the science is well studied, land managers often struggle to understand how human values impact forest restoration …

Activity Of Pgm-Free Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Ph And Co-Catalysis Effects, Mario Santiago Rojas Carbonell 8148369 Apr 2017

Activity Of Pgm-Free Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Ph And Co-Catalysis Effects, Mario Santiago Rojas Carbonell 8148369

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Fuel cells offer a source to the current and always increasing demand for electric power. But as any new technology, there are challenges that need to be addressed to render it feasible for the market place. One of this challenges is finding the appropriate materials to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) that occurs in the cathode. Oxygen is used as an oxidant in a significant portion of the fuel cells due to its readily availability and high reduction potential. Now, one the bottlenecks that stops the large-scale adoption is the expensive and rare metals that have been used as …
