Cooking For The Patria: The Seccion Femenina And The Politics Of Food And Women During The Franco Years, Suzanne Dunai

History ETDs

This study elucidates the importance of cooking manuals and recipe collections published by the Sección Femenina de la Falange (Womens Section of the Falange, 1934-1977) during the Franco Dictatorship (1939-1975) in Spain. The organization emphasized its dedication to pursuing women's interests to the political apparatus in its political rhetoric and experienced a substantial amount of autonomy from the Franco regime in communicating feminine ideals and social reform to the Spanish public. Recipes and cooking instruction provided the organization a unique way to access Spanish homes and reform the quotidian habits of Spanish women. The ideology of the Sección Femenina emphasized …

Occidental Encounters: Early Nineteenth-Century Egyptian Travelers To Europe, Omran Doaa Jul 2012

Occidental Encounters: Early Nineteenth-Century Egyptian Travelers To Europe, Omran Doaa

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study aims to examine nineteenth-century Occidentalism on which little research has been done. Understanding how the East views the West is not just an end in itself, but it can help us better understand post-colonial theory, which has always been more skewed towards Western views. The study will look at some of the tenets of modern Occidentalism, among them powerless discourse, knowledge, ambivalence, emancipation of women and the use of religion in legitimizing the discourse. I will also investigate the erroneous conception that Occidentalism is the opposite of Orientalism. Even though both fields of post-colonial theory share some common …

Negotiating Cultural Identity In The Struggle For Democracy In Zimbabwe: Postcolonial Transitions And Endurance, Cleophas Taurai Muneri Jul 2012

Negotiating Cultural Identity In The Struggle For Democracy In Zimbabwe: Postcolonial Transitions And Endurance, Cleophas Taurai Muneri

Communication ETDs

This project examines how discourses on democratization in Zimbabwe, a country transitioning from colonialism constituted and reconstituted cultural identities. I specifically focused on discourses from both government controlled and privately owned newspapers and 18 civil society organizations involved in the struggle for democracy. I also explored the ideological implications of the newspaper and civil society discourses. The research was guided by three research questions. This research was informed by theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of postcolonial theory, democracy, identity, public and counter-public spheres. Consistent with the critical perspective that informed this project, I utilized Fairclough's critical discourse analysis to bring out …

And Now I'M Here: An Ethnography Of Communication Inquiry Into Asking For Help Practices At A Homeless Shelter', Larae D. Tronstad

Communication ETDs

At a particular faith-based nonprofit homeless shelter located in metropolitan area in the Southwest region of the United States, here called the Little City, this ethnography of communication used one hundred hours of observation, eighteen interviews and two social artifacts to reveal the complex nature of personhood, norms for, and consequences of communicative interaction between homeless individuals and volunteers. Homeless individuals were depicted by themselves, staff, volunteers and the organization as persons who are 'broken,' 'addicted,' and as 'the new poor.' Once homeless individuals joined the Life in Christ's Power program at the Little City, they were 'depersonalized' as they …

Transcending Traditional Approaches To Sexuality Education: A Case Study In Communicating, Constructing, And Defining Sex-Positive Sexuality Education, Jessica A. Nodulman

Communication ETDs

Guided by a social-ecological approach to health, this study explored a new approach to sex education--sex-positive sexuality education (SPSE). A collective case study was completed on three organizations that utilize a sex-positive approach to sexuality education--Good Vibrations, Scarleteen.com, and The National Sexuality Resource Center's Summer Institute. Good Vibrations is an adult sex toy retailer, Scarleteen.com is an adolescent sexual health website, and the Summer Institute is an academic institute for scholars and practitioners of sexuality studies. Using qualitative methods of observations, interviews, and textual analysis, this study explains how sex-positive sexuality education is constructed, communicated, and defined. Despite studying three …

Social-Environmental Entrepreneurs' Communicative Actions In Communication Networks, Alice Hopkins-Loy

Communication ETDs

Entrepreneurs' communicative plans and actions serve to attract resources to their venture, positioning them for strategic gains. However, there is little understanding of how entrepreneurs perceive, value, navigate, and manage their participation in communication networks. This research finds that entrepreneurs strategically use communication networks to find and engage complementary resources, social support, and human and financial capital. Importantly, entrepreneurs facilitate the development of new networks, around innovative solutions and approaches to social problems.

"I Have To Be Everything" Voices Of International Working Mothers: Negotiating Work-Life Balance In The United States, Qingjing Xu May 2012

"I Have To Be Everything" Voices Of International Working Mothers: Negotiating Work-Life Balance In The United States, Qingjing Xu

Communication ETDs

Studies of work-life balance and intercultural adaptation have addressed the effect of work-life conflict for working adults and the psychological and sociocultural adaptation of immigrants. However, rarely does this research explore how working adults, especially women, develop solutions to those work-life tensions. Previous literature is typically silent about how international women struggle with acclimating to a different national culture while also working or going to school and parenting children. Thus, this study aims to explore the unique challenges international working mothers face as they work and live in the United States and the communicative strategies and solutions they adopt in …

After setting forth this overview, Moore considers practical mechanisms to implement international humanitarian law, focusing specifically on the experiences of Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Burundi. Through the case studies of these countries, Moore describes transitional justice's fundamental components: …

Health, Well-Being, And Experiences Of Discrimination For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Paulette J. Christopher Feb 2012

Health, Well-Being, And Experiences Of Discrimination For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Paulette J. Christopher

Psychology ETDs

Like racial and ethnic minorities, sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people) are at increased risk for mental (Meyer, 2003; Hatzenbuehler, 2009) and physical (Conran, Mimiaga, & Landers, 2008; Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, 2010; Huebner & Davis, 2007) health problems compared to heterosexuals. The current study attempted to 1) determine if the stress related to discrimination mediated the relationship between discrimination and health and well-being for LGB people, and 2) and identify risk and resilience factors specific to LGB people that might moderate the relationship between discrimination related stress and LGB health, mental health and satisfaction with life. …

Nine teachers were interviewed who had participated in the program for at least one year in the West Hawaii Complex Area on the island of Hawaii. Long, in-depth interviews with open-ended questions focused on the central research question: how do teachers understand their experiences in the Kahua Induction Program and the impact of their participation on their teaching? Several themes emerged from the participant interviews. First, before entering the Kahua Program the participants felt a need for …

Gender Matters In Batterer Intervention Program Settings: Curriculum Topics Are Most Helpful In Fostering Positive Change In Domestic Violence Behavior, Courtney Cameron

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Abstract Domestic violence is truly a complex issue in terms of defining it — no single definition can be found, in terms of understanding its causality ,some view it as a gender issue, others perceived it a socio-political issue, many consider it a criminal issue, and others treat it a psycho-social issue, in terms of its impact , its magnitude, effect and impact are far reaching and may last for a life time, in terms of its dynamics, its victims and perpetrators come from all demographic groups, and in terms of the effective intervention, they tend to focus on victimization …

¡No Se Puede!: The Decline Of Immigrant Unionization Through The Great Recession Of 2008, Peter Catron Feb 2012

¡No Se Puede!: The Decline Of Immigrant Unionization Through The Great Recession Of 2008, Peter Catron

Sociology ETDs

Prior research finds that in recent years immigrants had a higher propensity to unionize than native-born workers. Such research buttresses the hopes of both working class Hispanics, who view unions as a potential avenue to upward mobility, and union supporters who view immigrants as a potential source of union revival. However, there is little research that shows historically marginalized immigrant workers are able to maintain newly acquired union jobs, especially during times unfavorable to unionization more generally. Therefore, this paper focuses on immigrant unionization during the Great Recession of 2008 to determine whether the inroads that immigrants have made through …

Censorship And Holocaust Film In The Hollywood Studio System, Nancy Copeland Halbgewachs Feb 2012

Censorship And Holocaust Film In The Hollywood Studio System, Nancy Copeland Halbgewachs

Sociology ETDs

Following the end of World War II in 1945 to 1969, Hollywood films remained silent about the extermination camps, the sites of the murders and incineration of European Jews by Nazi Germany that came to be known as the Holocaust. The Hollywood studio system produced very few Holocaust motion pictures before 1980. This research provides evidence from the files of the Hays Commission in the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to support the hypothesis that censorship was a major social cause of this silence. The correspondence between members of the Hays Commission, the …

The Influence Of Women's Status On Economic Development: A Pooled Time Series Cross-Sectional Analysis Of 126 Countries, 1980-2005, Lynzie Rowland Feb 2012

The Influence Of Women's Status On Economic Development: A Pooled Time Series Cross-Sectional Analysis Of 126 Countries, 1980-2005, Lynzie Rowland

Sociology ETDs

The role of women in development has generated countless studies devoted to illuminating distinct aspects of womens lives and experiences. Several theories, developmentalism and social feminism, were created as a response to modernization theory's inattention to the roles of women in the process of development. Developmentalism has focused on the influence of the improved status of women on economic development. This study examines this association from the developmentalist perspective for 126 countries every five years between 1980 and 2005. Additionally, this paper investigates the linking mechanisms of women's status to economic development. Secondary data acquired from the World Bank website …

Jail Incarceration And Violent Crime Rates: A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Analysis In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Saundra Trujillo Feb 2012

Jail Incarceration And Violent Crime Rates: A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Analysis In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Saundra Trujillo

Sociology ETDs

A core idea in the collateral consequences literature is that incarceration stimulates residential instability — a process referred to as coercive mobility — which in turn weakens community social organization and elevates local crime levels. I test this idea with an exploratory cross-sectional analysis of Albuquerque neighborhoods (2000-2001) using a general linear model with a negative binomial response function. Net of rigorous controls I find that jail incarceration increases violent crime rates. Further I find that the positive effect of jail incarcerations on violent crime is weakened at relatively high levels of jail incarceration for majority Latino neighborhoods. Whereas, in …

The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera Feb 2012

The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera

English Language and Literature ETDs

Beginning in the late nineteenth century, literary depictions of farmers borrow from the established trope of the Vanishing American' Indian to portray farmers as disappearing before the forces of modern civilization. I argue that writing about farmers from this era ought to be approached as a type of extinction discourse: the rhetoric surrounding the decline of a race or culture. Extinction discourse, whether applied to the American Indian or to farmers, fuses mourning over a passing way of life with celebration of civilization's progress. Farmers are portrayed as primitive figures, as fundamentally incompatible with modern civilization, in all of the …

Motivational Triggers Of Faculty Members: The Process Of Teaching Practice Transformation, Julie Sanchez Feb 2012

Motivational Triggers Of Faculty Members: The Process Of Teaching Practice Transformation, Julie Sanchez

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

In recent years, there have been sizeable shifts in higher education. These shifts include more diverse student populations, advancements in pedagogy, and research progress within discipline-specific knowledge (Austin, 2002; Braxton, 2006; Gibbs & Coffey, 2004; Sunal et al, 2001; Trigwell & Prosser, 1996). These changes along with student success have motivated faculty members to make changes in their teaching practices. However, few studies have examined the process and the factors that activate this teaching transformation among individual professors. The purpose of this study was to describe the process and triggers of teaching practice change of higher education teachers. Data were …

Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett Jan 2012

Risky Subjects, Subjects At Risk: Hpv Vaccination And The Neoliberal Turn In Public Health, Anzia Bennett

American Studies ETDs

This thesis utilizes the example of Gardasil to better understand the dynamics of power at play in discourses of health in the United States, and to identify the neoliberal tenors of some contemporary public health strategies. A neoliberal turn in public health, while not all encompassing, has resulted in distorted and limited conceptions of health that rely on consumerism and notions of personal responsibility. With the example of Gardasil, Merck has deployed age-old tropes that pre-date, and are strengthened by, this neoliberal turn. These tropes--of women and girls as simultaneously at-risk and risky subjects, of young women's bodies in need …
