The Unconstitutionality Of Urban Poverty, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2012

The Unconstitutionality Of Urban Poverty, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the Thirteenth Amendment is a proper federal vehicle for correcting the conditions of the urban underclass. The Amendment, I posit, contemplates federal intervention in the state and local governments' handling of its most troubled areas. Such federal involvement is appropriate because those responsible for these physical areas have not ensured that their residents have the necessary predicates for full and independent participation in society. The Thirteenth Amendment, in other words, supports the federal government's establishment of a minimum floor of economic and educational conditions such that the urban underclass may possess meaningful horizontal and vertical liberty, …

Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski Dec 2011

Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski

Anthropology ETDs

Understanding the demographic transition, a trend in which fertility drops after a period of population growth, has been an important area of anthropological and demographic research. This dissertation seeks to understand fertility change by testing five models that have been presented in the literature. The predictions that are unique to each hypothesis are tested in San Borja, Bolivia, a community currently undergoing a fertility transition. Low modern fertility seems counter-intuitive given the increase of individual wealth, but there have not been sufficient tests to lead to an understanding of why this occurs. Informational hypotheses explain fertility transition as a change …

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig Dec 2011

Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig

Biology ETDs

We show that infectious disease is a major contributor to the worldwide distribution of human cognitive ability, as measured by psychometric IQ. In areas where infectious disease is high, average human intelligence tends to be lower, and in areas where infectious disease is low, average human intelligence tends to be higher. In separate studies, we tested this across world nations (chapter 2) and across states of the USA (chapter 3). In efforts to disseminate our research to wider audiences, I reviewed the findings contained in chapters 2 and 3 using language that is accessible to non-biologists (chapter 4). Although it …

Native Artists Helping Our People Endure (Hope): A Social Capital Analysis Of A Grassroots Art Initiative To Address Youth Suicide In An Indigenous Community, Nathania Tsosie Dec 2011

Native Artists Helping Our People Endure (Hope): A Social Capital Analysis Of A Grassroots Art Initiative To Address Youth Suicide In An Indigenous Community, Nathania Tsosie

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study identifies and examines the components of social capital related to a grassroots initiative to address Indigenous youth suicide through art. The Native Artists for HOPE’s Thoreau Youth Art Project was organized by a small group of professional Native American artists in response to a sudden increase of youth suicide in a community on the Navajo Nation. Built on cultural core values identified by the artists themselves, the day long workshop encourages self-expression and creativity as an alternative to risky behaviors believed by community members to be related to suicide. A brief literature review of social capital including its …

Tragicidade - A Violenta Relação Entre As Diferentes Classes Sociais Nos Centros Urbanos Brasileiros E Sua Representação Na Literatura Contemporânea, Daniela Meireles

Research Papers

O Poder De Consumo Como Instrumento Da Cidadania Verde Em Human Festa (2008), De Regina Rheda, Danielle Murta De Laborde Affonso

Research Papers

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss Nov 2011

Inquisitive Objects: Material Culture And Conversos In Early Modern Ciudad Real, Jessica Weiss

Research Papers

Between 1483 and 1526, one-hundred and twenty-four trials were conducted by the Spanish Inquisition against conversos in Ciudad Real. The notarial records from these trials contain a multitude of references to material culture, including sculpted artworks, candles, and effigies. This essay analyzes the references to materiality utilized in arraignments, witness testimonies, and verdicts, and then correlates them to broader constructions of cultural identity. These references reveal a pre-modern animistic world view in which objects both shape and are shaped by their participation as active agents in religious ritual.

El Pensamiento Intelectual Comunista En Argentina: Una Relectura De Héctor P. Agosti Y Su Introducción Al Pensamiento De Gramsci, Alexia Massholder

Research Papers

The Four Pillars Of Successful Land Reform: Can Revolutionary Nepal Stand Up?, Ravi Bhandari, Alex Linghorn Oct 2011

The Four Pillars Of Successful Land Reform: Can Revolutionary Nepal Stand Up?, Ravi Bhandari, Alex Linghorn

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

The continued failure of land reform has been one of the most contentious issues in the political economy of Nepal for over half-a-century. Civil war (1996-2006) ended with cross-party commitments to implement ‘scientific’ land reform and end feudalism, putting the issue firmly back in the spotlight. Moving beyond traditional land reform debates this paper determines whether the necessary foundations are in place to provide a platform for successful pro-poor redistributive reform. Through the analytical lens of Borras and McKinley’s (2006) ‘4 Pillars’ paradigm, Nepal is assessed vis-à-vis the four fundamental elements of contemporary state-society driven redistributive reform: a beneficiaries-led movement, …

Mi Casa Es Su Casa: La Construcción De La Identidad Chicana Y El Desarrollo De La Doméstica En La Narrativa Chicana, Verónica Calvillo Aug 2011

Mi Casa Es Su Casa: La Construcción De La Identidad Chicana Y El Desarrollo De La Doméstica En La Narrativa Chicana, Verónica Calvillo

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The development of the Chicano/a identity has prevailed as a main theme in a vast variety of Chicano/a Literature. This study analyses the construction of identity in female protagonists as they develop a domestic profession in the private and public sectors. The novels Face of An Angel written by Denise Chávez and Trini written by Estela Portillo-Trambley as well as selected poems written by Pat Mora set the stage for a dialogue between domestic workers and their employers as both parties negotiate their own identity and subsistence in a society where their presence involves a give and take for economic …

Tambien Por Los Que Se Quedaron: Tres Acercamiento Al Tema Del Preso Politico En Primavera Con Una Esquina Rota De Mario Benedetti, Carmen Julia Holguin Chaparro Aug 2011

Tambien Por Los Que Se Quedaron: Tres Acercamiento Al Tema Del Preso Politico En Primavera Con Una Esquina Rota De Mario Benedetti, Carmen Julia Holguin Chaparro

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation analyzes Mario Benedetti's novel Primavera con una esquina rota (A Spring with a Broken Corner) with special attention to the subject of the political prisoner and the representation of the crisis that unfolded in Uruguay after the 1973 coup d'état. Up until now, criticism on Primavera has focused, almost exclusively, on the topic of exile, limiting with this the text's multidimensional quality. This dissertation postulates that the subject of the political prisoner is as central to the novel as that of exile. As a consequence, if we try to interpret the work paying attention only to one of …

Perceived Coparenting Quality Among Mutually Aggressive Parents : The Impact Of Interparental And Parental Factors, Melissa Gerstle Aug 2011

Perceived Coparenting Quality Among Mutually Aggressive Parents : The Impact Of Interparental And Parental Factors, Melissa Gerstle

Psychology ETDs

Coparenting has been found to impact all facets of family functioning, including child and parent adjustment, parenting, and even the interparental relationship itself, and, like many family processes, it can be significantly disrupted by interparental conflict. Interparental aggression, the extreme negative pole of conflict, has previously been found to adversely affect many parts of the family system, such as child and parent adjustment and the parent-child relationship. Yet, there is a paucity of research investigating the impact of interparental aggression on the coparenting relationship. The present study investigated coparenting processes among parents displaying mutual, situation-specific aggression in a civil court-mandated …

Expressions Of Another Center: Borderlands Visual Theory & The Art Of Luis Jimenez, Eric Tomás Hernández Castillo

American Studies ETDs

An artist who constantly challenged various social and political boundaries, Jimenez and his art contribute to a growing discourse about U.S. sculpture and 21st century American art. By combining various methodologies such as formal analysis, visual analysis, and critical biography, I will underscore the significance of Luis Jimenez's art in 21st century American art. Jimenez's art functions autobiographically particular moment in his life affected his art in many ways. Los Tres Grandes - Herman Gallegos, Ernesto Galarza, Julian Samora: Rooted In Community, Guided By Friendship, Cultivating Leadership., Carmen R. Samora

American Studies ETDs

Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. At a time when foundations earmarked minority support primarily for African Americans, Los …
