Perceptions Of Career And Technical Education (Cte) Teachers On Indicators Of Teaching Quality, Jesse Seth Chenven
Perceptions Of Career And Technical Education (Cte) Teachers On Indicators Of Teaching Quality, Jesse Seth Chenven
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of career and technical education (CTE) teachers regarding the importance they assign to indicators of quality teaching practice. The population consisted of CTE teachers who teach or taught in New Mexico. The first research question asked how CTE teachers perceive the importance of quality teaching indicators as they relate to what CTE teachers should know and be able to do. Subsequent research questions examined the degree to which four demographic categories (years of experience, level of education, discipline of instruction, and licensure type) influence CTE teachers’ opinions regarding the importance …

What The Police Don’T Know May Hurt Us: An Argument For Enhanced Legal Training Of Police Officers, Yuri R. Linetsky
What The Police Don’T Know May Hurt Us: An Argument For Enhanced Legal Training Of Police Officers, Yuri R. Linetsky
New Mexico Law Review
Using original empirical research, this Article identifies deficient legal training in police academies as a latent cause of improper arrests or detentions. This often results in unnecessary conflict between police officers and citizens, leading to endemic distrust of officers in the communities they serve. With enhanced legal training, police officers can avoid these negative interactions. Although police officers need not be lawyers, they must have more than a cursory understanding of the law. Their primary responsibility is to enforce state and local laws, which often requires officers to interpret statutory language in light of constitutional limitations. Current police academy curricula …

Direct Potable Reuse In Small-To-Medium Sized Inland Communities: Lessons Learned For Public Education And Outreach, Claudia B. Pratesi
Direct Potable Reuse In Small-To-Medium Sized Inland Communities: Lessons Learned For Public Education And Outreach, Claudia B. Pratesi
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Drought, growing populations, and potential conflict over water in the American Southwest have water authorities examining highly treated wastewater as an option to augment municipal supplies. Direct potable reuse (DPR) holds promise for improving sustainability and reliability of potable water supplies by generating high-quality drinking water from wastewater. Despite research demonstrating that DPR can be safe, one of the biggest hindrances to DPR is negative public perception. Attempts to implement some DPR project have failed, while others have proceeded quickly. Using insights from the literature and interviews with water managers, this study aims to: (1) examine existing community conditions related …

Raton Walkability Workshop Report, University Of New Mexico Prevention Research Center
Walking Guides and Reports
Ramblin’ Round Raton (RRR) coordinated a walkability workshop for members of the community to come together at the Center for Sustainable Community and assess different parts of the city for pedestrian friendliness. The group modeled the event after a similar workshop in the Village of Cuba in 2009. Prior to the workshop, RRR identified six areas of focus. They chose the locations because they are popular pedestrian thoroughfares, close to schools, or thought to be confusing areas for pedestrians.
An Examination Of Policy Options For Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions In New Jersey, Gabriel Pacyniak
An Examination Of Policy Options For Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions In New Jersey, Gabriel Pacyniak
Faculty Scholarship
An Examination of Policy Options for Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions in New Jersey surveys emissions and energy trends, describes a “deep decarbonization pathway” for the state, and identifies the types of policies that would be necessary to achieve those reductions. Many of the policies address the power and transportation sectors, which account for more than 60 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions from New Jersey. The report also includes options for improving building efficiency, reducing methane leaks from natural gas infrastructure, restoring natural carbon sinks in forests and wetlands, and incorporating equity considerations to address the needs of frontline …
Analyzing The Effectiviness Of A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Targeting At-Risk Opioid Abuse Patients, Treadway Childs
Analyzing The Effectiviness Of A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Targeting At-Risk Opioid Abuse Patients, Treadway Childs
Public Administration ETDs
The effectiveness of a prescription drug monitoring program in coordination with a prescription opioid recidivism program was examined at a semi-rural community hospital. Patients were identified by a multi-disciplinary committee to be at-risk for opioid misuse or abuse, and were denied prescription opioids. Patients were considered eligible for the program if they had over 12 emergency department visits in the previous 12 months, or 6 visits in the previous 6 months, depending on how long the hospital had records on a patient. Patients who were placed in the prescription opioid recidivism program could not receive opioids at this hospital. The …

Understanding Intersections And Impact: Planning, Police Violence, And Reform, Rachel L. Hassna
Understanding Intersections And Impact: Planning, Police Violence, And Reform, Rachel L. Hassna
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Although public safety has long been an integral aspect of planning, issues such as police violence and reform have been left to other professions and fields of study. Despite the fact that planning policy is executed and enforced by police power, and despite the fact that planning has a lengthy history of perpetuating structural inequality that condemns marginalized communities to higher rates of police violence and premature death, planners are rarely encouraged to consider the intersections of planning and police violence. By reviewing the history of planning and policing as interconnected mechanisms of social engineering and control, this research attempts …

Rationale for conducting this research project was based upon prior experiences with the street paper community. The first objective of this study was to work cooperatively with local experts in the fields of social entrepreneurship, workforce development, social service provisioning, city planning, and journalism to identify barriers and strategies for developing a street paper value chain for Albuquerque. The second objective of this study was to support these experts in selfidentifying their involvement as potential actors and/or value chain coordinators in developing a street paper operation in Albuquerque. While a comprehensive list of barriers to upward mobility for low-income and …
A Numerical Investigation Of The Implications Of Altered Channel-Floodplain Connectivity On Hydrodynamic Flood Wave Processes, Colin F. Byrne
A Numerical Investigation Of The Implications Of Altered Channel-Floodplain Connectivity On Hydrodynamic Flood Wave Processes, Colin F. Byrne
Civil Engineering ETDs
With severely altered rivers throughout the developed world, hydrodynamic processes and floodplain connectivity have changed drastically. The research presented here focuses on quantification of two hydrodynamic processes: flood wave attenuation and channel-floodplain fluxes. Objectives of the three research chapters were to (1) evaluate how the ecosystem service of flood wave attenuation has changed with the implementation of river engineering practices as well as contemporary river restoration efforts, (2) describe the sensitivities of flood wave attenuation to contemporary and altered conditions, and (3) characterize channel-floodplain connectivity through lateral flux metrics. All chapter objectives were met using high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling techniques …

Is The "Act Of God" Dead?, Clifford J. Villa
Faculty Scholarship
In more than twenty years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before joining the legal academy, I saw many communities affected by fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. However, I never saw a case where the act of God defense prevailed against environmental liability. Confirming this personal experience, I later learned that the number of reported cases where the act of God defense had prevailed against environmental liability, under all statutes and all federal circuits, was also exactly zero.
This raises two obvious questions: (1) why does the act of God defense so often fail? and (2) …

Alone In A Crowd: Perceived Social Relationships And Health Outcomes For Clergy, Christopher G. Ford
Psychology ETDs
The purpose of this study was to understand more about the relative contributions of different measures of social relationships to mental and physical health. This was done through secondary analysis of a clergy health intervention (n = 616), a population with unique professional and personal relationship characteristics. Hierarchal multiple regression was used in three steps to control for demographics, measures of perceived social relationships (e.g., social support, social engagement, social isolation, and relationship satisfaction), and whether or not clergy worked alone or with clergy colleagues. The results demonstrated that the relationship variables entered together, after controlling for demographics, were particularly …
Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang
Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang
Civil Engineering ETDs
Roadway pavement surface distress information is essential for effective pavement asset management, and subsequently, transportation agencies at all levels dedicate a large amount of time and money to routinely collect data on pavement surface distress conditions as the core of their asset management programs. These data are used by these agencies to make maintenance and repair decisions. Current methods for pavement surface distress evaluation are time-consuming and expensive. Geospatial technologies provide new methods for evaluating pavement surface distress condition that can supplement or substitute for currently-adopted evaluation methods. However, few previous studies have explored the utility of geospatial technologies for …

Mobilization And Repression In The Occupy Movement, Eric Turner
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation project focuses on dynamics of mobilization and repression in the Occupy movement. This movement emerged in late 2011 in the United States and sought to protest the growing economic inequality and the growing influence of corporations in politics. This project focuses on Occupy chapters which emerged in 74 out of the 100 largest cities in the United States. The first empirical chapter of this project focuses on dynamics which affect differences in protest size, measured in terms of protest turnouts relative to population. This chapter first demonstrates the importance of large student populations and greater numbers of universities …
