An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper Sep 2013

An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper

Psychology ETDs

The current research draws on evolutionary and life history theory to understand social facilitation of human energy expenditure, and test predictions focused on when and for whom increases in energetic effort are more likely to occur. Two studies tested the premise that cues of mates and/or competitors for mates can modify perceptions of the socio-ecological context of energy expenditure, and thereby change short-term energetic effort and exercise motivation and self-efficacy. Tests of psychological and physiological mediators and moderators were performed. Results provide preliminary support for the utilization of evolutionary theory to understand social facilitation by demonstrating significant effects of primes …

Beyond Stacking: An Exploration Of The Impact Of Background On Leadership Recruitment And Positional Segregation In Division-I Womens Basketball, Sonja Robinson Sep 2013

Beyond Stacking: An Exploration Of The Impact Of Background On Leadership Recruitment And Positional Segregation In Division-I Womens Basketball, Sonja Robinson

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Sports are often is seen as vehicles of social and career mobility, especially at the collegiate levels where full athletics scholarships grant students access to higher education. While sport, on the surface and at its best, espouses the values of equality and merit, studies examining under-representations of minority groups in key roles indicate that more work needs to be done on inclusiveness and equity. Leadership recruitment studies in sport traditionally evaluate the influence that playing positions have on career mobility (Grusky, 1963). Loy and Elvouge (1970) expanded upon that tradition to develop positional segregation (stacking') research, which explores the influence …

Azúcar Negra: (Re) Envisioning Race, Representation, And Resistance In The Afrofeminista Imaginary, Kiley Jeanelle Guyton Acosta Sep 2013

Azúcar Negra: (Re) Envisioning Race, Representation, And Resistance In The Afrofeminista Imaginary, Kiley Jeanelle Guyton Acosta

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

In this dissertation, I locate contemporary articulations of afrofeminismo in manifold modes of cultural production including literature, music, visual displays of the body, and digital media. As a point of departure, I examine the development of afrofeminismo in relation to colonial sexual violence in sugar-based economies to explain how colonial dynamics inflect ideologies of blanqueamiento/embranquecimento (racial whitening) and pseudo-scientific racial determinism. In this context, I address representations of the mujer negra (black woman) and the mulata (mulatto woman) in Caribbean and Brazilian cultural discourse. Specifically, I analyze how the discourses around, as well as by, these figures contribute(d) to the …

Truth For The Rest Of Us: Conventional Truth In The Work Of Dharmakīrti, Laura Guerrero Sep 2013

Truth For The Rest Of Us: Conventional Truth In The Work Of Dharmakīrti, Laura Guerrero

Philosophy ETDs

It is common in Buddhist philosophical literature to differentiate between two different types of truth: ultimate truth and conventional truth. For the philosophers of the Mahāyāna tradition of Buddhism, it is difficult to give an account of conventional truth that is both consistent with their anti-realist metaphysics (their ultimate position) and also robust enough to support truth as a normative concept. This dissertation addresses this problem by offering a deflationary interpretation of truth in Mahāyāna that is supported by a pragmatic account of intentionality and meaning. This account of meaning is developed from the work of the 7th Century Buddhist …

The Biophysical Effects Of Deuterium Oxide On Biomolecules And Living Cells Through Open Notebook Science., Anthony Salvagno Sep 2013

The Biophysical Effects Of Deuterium Oxide On Biomolecules And Living Cells Through Open Notebook Science., Anthony Salvagno

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation explores various effects of deuterium oxide (D2O also known as heavy water) in nature. Water is everywhere and interacts with just about everything. As such, it would be quite a daunting task to characterize every effect that water exhibits on everything in the universe. This research is a small piece of the puzzle, and provides some fundamental understanding of how water interacts with other molecules. This is done from two viewpoints: (1) the effects of heavy water on living cells and (2) the effects of heavy water on molecules. Varying concentrations of deuterium oxide were used as the …

Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan Sep 2013

Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan

History ETDs

In examining the area surrounding Columbus, New Mexico, and Palomas, Chihuahua, as a landscape of violence, this dissertation historicizes the process by which violent actions create a sense of place. Although neither town is considered large enough to be of much consequence, both were targeted by bellicose campaigns that sought to destabilize the Mexican state during the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution. Raids on the Palomas customs house were, at least in part, responses to the drive of the Mexican government under Porfirio Díaz to create modern progress and order in Mexico. For many inhabitants of rural northwestern Chihuahua, the …

Priming Change Talk : The Experimental Manipulation Of Client Speech, Christopher Mclouth Sep 2013

Priming Change Talk : The Experimental Manipulation Of Client Speech, Christopher Mclouth

Psychology ETDs

Previous research has supported the link between client language in favor of change (change talk) during Motivational Interviewing sessions and subsequent substance use outcomes. The present study investigated whether the frequency of change talk can be increased using a pre-treatment priming paradigm. Eighty six current cigarette smokers were randomized into one of three priming manipulations: change talk, sustain talk, or a neutral condition. After completing a version of the Scrambled-Sentence test (change, sustain, or neutral) intended to prime or suppress change talk, participants engaged in a pseudo-therapeutic encounter with a research assistant who asked them a series of open-ended questions …

Segmented Assimilation Trajectories And Latino Health : An Analysis Of The Adaptation Process Over Time, Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa

Psychology ETDs

Cultural adaptation factors likely influence health status and social mobility. Using data from the Corazón Life Journey Studies, cross-sectional interviews of immigrant Latino, U.S.-born Latino, and Non-Hispanic White adults (n=272), we investigated acculturation factors, social mobility, and health outcomes across four time points, elementary school, middle school, high school and current adulthood. Using growth mixture modeling, lifetime segmented assimilation trajectories were developed describing different acculturation and social mobility changes. A four-class model best described the data. Significant differences emerged among the ethnic groups. Family Traditionalism significantly predicted acculturations starting point and change over time. Initial acculturation values predicted social mobility. …

Testing The Stress-Strain-Coping-Social Support Model In Significant Others Of Those With Cancer, Julie M. Brovko Sep 2013

Testing The Stress-Strain-Coping-Social Support Model In Significant Others Of Those With Cancer, Julie M. Brovko

Psychology ETDs

Previous research around the stress-strain-coping-social support (SSCSS) model has shown that the stress of having a family member with alcoholism leads to strain for the family member. This strain is mediated by coping skills and social support. The purpose of this study was to see if the SSCSS model extended to significant others who had a loved one suffering from cancer. There were three aims. The first aim was to determine whether our adapted measures represented the constructs they were meant to describe. The second aim originally was to determine if the SSCSS model was a good fit for those …

Creating A Pipeline To Engineering For Women Through An Interdisciplinary Data-Driven And Cyber-Infrastructure Enabled Course, Johann Van Reenen, Kevin Comerford

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Academics have become increasingly interdisciplinary while at the same time, the sciences, engineering and research in general are increasingly data driven. Most higher education curricula, especially in Engineering are, however, still rooted in more traditional, discipline bound curricula and make little use of the vast amounts of data available. We describe an experimental course that address this and aims to include women from non-engineering fields. The interdisciplinary course took a data driven approach to the intersection of womens issues, water rights, and workers' rights, taught by faculty from Civil Engineering, History, American Studies, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geography, and Informatics. …

The Invasive Kind, Christina Hjelm Jul 2013

The Invasive Kind, Christina Hjelm

Theatre & Dance ETDs

This essay will explore the representation of the Latin American female identity in Dramatic Narratives. It analyzes the sexualized Latina stereotype frequently portrayed in the media and discusses how I, as a Cuban American playwright, approach creating more authentic portrayals of the contemporary Hispanic American woman. Consequently, this paper contributes to research in the fields of performance studies, specifically identity politics and the politics of representation with further implications in dramatic theory and women's studies. The failing state of Latina representation on U.S. television must be addressed as English-language networks are presently striving to provide relatable programming to the growing …

The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia Jul 2013

The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia

Theatre & Dance ETDs

The character Ophelia, from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, is an iconographic symbol and cultural emblem of beauty, death and madness. For over four hundred years, her vividly described and picturesque death has inspired the works of countless visual artists and theatrical performers. However, her presence in the larger cultural consciousness of society is not limited only to the realms of fine art, theatre, and literature. Throughout history, her influence has also spilled over into everyday perceptions and beliefs regarding the nature of women and madness. Particularly within Victorian England, Ophelia's character came to influence the recognition and diagnosis of madness in …

The Dependent Origination Of Skepticism In Classical India: An Experiment In Cross-Cultural Philosophy, Ethan Mills Jul 2013

The Dependent Origination Of Skepticism In Classical India: An Experiment In Cross-Cultural Philosophy, Ethan Mills

Philosophy ETDs

I begin with the question of whether the problem of philosophical skepticism is inevitable, a question that was answered affirmatively by Hume and has come to be a source of debate in contemporary epistemology. If skepticism is an inevitable problem, then it should arise in any sufficiently sophisticated tradition of epistemology such as the tradition found in classical India. The Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu gives arguments from ignorance based on dreams that are quite similar to the dream argument of Descartes. However, while Vasubandhus arguments give an invitation to skeptical concerns (especially if he is a phenomenalist, rather than an idealist), …

An Examination Of Psychopathy And Substance Use Disorders Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Cluster Analysis, Lora Cope Jul 2013

An Examination Of Psychopathy And Substance Use Disorders Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Cluster Analysis, Lora Cope

Psychology ETDs

Psychopathy is a personality disorder that is exemplified by affective and interpersonal characteristics such as grandiosity, pathological lying, manipulative use of others, and a profound lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse. Psychopaths also typically demonstrate a constellation of problematic and dangerous behavioral characteristics including sensation seeking, impulsivity, and both instrumental and reactive aggression. Psychopathy and substance use disorders (i.e., abuse and dependence) are significant sources of financial and emotional burden in the United States, as both are strongly linked to severe and repetitive criminal activity. They are also highly comorbid, with psychopaths being about two to three times more likely …

Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter Jul 2013

Large-Scale Intrinsic Functional Connectivity And Attention In Schizophrenia, Michael Hunter

Psychology ETDs

It has been well-established that sustained attention and executive functioning are core deficits in schizophrenia (SZ). Growing evidence suggests that such attentional impairments may reflect disruptions in dominant intrinsic networks (INs). Functional network connectivity (FNC), described as the dependency between multiple INs, has revealed dysfunction among key INs in people with SZ. The objective of the current study was to test the hypothesis that SCZ would exhibit less specialized cognitive processing and therefore decreased FNC between dominant INs, and that any disruptions in FNC would predict neuropsychological profiles of attention. Methods: Thirty-five patients with SZ and thirty-three healthy controls (HC) …

Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces Jul 2013

Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces

Psychology ETDs

Background: Studies have shown that both maternal and non-maternal environmental influences affect the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It remains unclear how these influences jointly interact to program offspring HPA function. Here, we test the hypothesis that non-maternal environmental effects on offspring HPA function depend contextually on maternal self-stress regulation. Methods: To examine individual differences in maternal self-stress regulation, mothers basal circulating and evoked corticosterone (CORT) response were measured shortly after weaning. The effects of the non-maternal environment were assessed by employing both the neonatal and the early adulthood novelty exposure procedures. The neonatal novelty exposure procedure occurred from …

The Role Of The Social Environment In Alcohol Or Drug Relapse Of Probationers Recently Released From Jail, Mandy Owens

Psychology ETDs

The current research study looked at the social networks of adult male alcohol or drug offending probationers recently released from jail, assessed if and how social networks change from pre- to post-incarceration, and tested whether changes in social networks were related to alcohol or drug use. Forty adult male probationers were recruited from the New Mexico Corrections Department, Probation Parole Division, and two to seven months after release from jail were administered a single assessment battery that measured social networks, motivation, self-help group involvement, substance use, and other potential correlates of relapse. Results showed that there were significant changes in …

Developing Adults' Oral English Communicative Competence In An Efl Environment: Collaborative Studies Of A Chinese Efl Teacher And Her Students, Feng Luo

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Economic and educational globalization presents Chinese college students with career and academic incentives to develop their oral English communicative competence; however, at the secondary level, students study English mainly for the purpose of written tests. As a result, their oral English learning is largely overlooked. In addition, significant challenges exist for learning oral English at the college level: large-sized classes, an English-as-a-foreign-language-learning (EFL) environment, traditional rote learning, student diversity, and different English-learning histories. This research aims at investigating effective teaching pedagogy suitable for large-sized college classes of students developing oral communicative competence in an EFL environment. With Vygotsky sociocultural theory …

"3 Simple Words: We The People": Culture, Identity, And The Contentious Politics Of The Contemporary Tea Party Movement In Montana, Stacy Keogh

Sociology ETDs

The Tea Party is a social and political movement urging government accountability, individual fiscal responsibility, and personal liberty as outlined by the United States Constitution. In this dissertation, I examine the cultural components of the Montana Tea Party asking two primary research questions: (1) What are the cultural dynamics of the Tea Party? (2) How does this determine the way the Tea Party engages in contentious politics? I found that the way the Montana Tea Party utilizes the resources of religion to provide a culture structure familiar to participants. It utilizes religious rhetoric to provide familiarity to the nations civil …
