Differential Influence Of The Great Recession On Political Participation Among Race And Ethnic Groups, Kimberly R. Huyser, Jillian Medeiros Pérez, Vickie Ybarra, Julia Marin Hellwege, Lisa Sanchez

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

Our study seeks to understand the role of perceived economic stress of the Great Recession on political participation among blacks, whites and Latinos. Methods. We use the 2012 Collaborative Multi-Racial Political Study and negative binomial regression to examine the impact of financial hardship on black, Hispanic, and white political participation. Results. We find that political participation among whites is unaffected by the Great Recession and is largely motivated by political interest. Blacks are mobilized by financial hardship even after controlling for political enthusiasm and linked fate. Hispanics have the lowest level of political participation. Conclusion. Overall, we conclude that the …

Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2014

Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the author pledges for the generalization of the Lupasco-Nicolescu’s Law of Included Middle [A, nonA, and a third value T which resolves their contradiction at another level of reality] to the Law of Included Multiple-Middle [A, antiA, and neutA, which is split into a multitude of neutralities between A and antiA, such as neutA1, neutA2, etc.]. The value (i.e. neutrality or indeterminacy related to A) actually comprises the included middle value.

Further, similarly to the extension from dialectics to neutrosophy, the author extends the Principle of Dynamic Opposition [opposition between A and antiA] …

Question Presented: Whether the Florida scheme for identifying mentally retarded defendants in capital cases violates Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). Summary of Argument: In Atkins, this Court concluded that a national consensus had developed against the execution of persons with mental retardation and that such executions violated the Eighth Amendment. The Court also stated that the national consensus suggests that some characteristics of mental retardation, such as disabilities in the areas of reasoning, judgment, and control of impulses, undermine the procedural protections of our capital punishment jurisprudence and can jeopardize the reliability and fairness of capital proceedings against …

Striae Re-Negotiated: The Self-Definition Of The Yiddish-Speaking Jewish Community In The Era Of Mexicos Raza Cósmica, Beth Merfish

Research Papers

This essay examines Mexican Jewish documents through which that community navigated the political terrain of post-Revolution Mexico. Central to this discussion is tension between Jewish desires to become part of this new nation and the imperative to remain a discreet cultural and religious community. I first examine the pressures of assimilation in 1920s Mexico exemplified by José Vasconcelos 1925 La raza cosmica and then probe the Yiddish-speaking Jewish community's response and self-definition in relation to a rapidly developing nation, using two case studies: the Jewish community's political position publicized in the 1929 Asociación de Jóvenes Israelitas de México bulletin and …

Defying Binaries: A Critical Examination Of 'Old' Versus 'New' In The Art Of Pablita Velarde And Helen Hardin, Jenna M. Kloeppel Dec 2013

Defying Binaries: A Critical Examination Of 'Old' Versus 'New' In The Art Of Pablita Velarde And Helen Hardin, Jenna M. Kloeppel

Art & Art History ETDs

Santa Clara painter Pablita Velarde and her artist daughter, Helen Hardin, are often discussed in both popular and academic literature as being representative, respectively, of two very different artistic traditions. Velardes art is commonly viewed as very much a product of her Dorothy Dunn-trained Santa Fe Studio background, and Hardin is seen as an avant-garde, wholly innovative artistic force representative of the generation of Native artists more aligned with the anti-Studio philosophies of the Institute of American Indian Arts, which was developing as Hardin was beginning her career in painting. This thesis will examine the modes of representation that have …

A Solution Hiding In Plain Sight: Special Education And Better Outcomes For Students With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Challenges, Yael Cannon, Michael J. Gregory, Julie Waterstone Dec 2013

A Solution Hiding In Plain Sight: Special Education And Better Outcomes For Students With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Challenges, Yael Cannon, Michael J. Gregory, Julie Waterstone

Faculty Scholarship

This Article will contribute to the ongoing dialogue about special education and the IDEA in two ways. First, it will describe patterns that have emerged from our work with individual children and families that shed light on how common IDEA implementation failures increase the risk of poor outcomes for students with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Critiques of the law and proposals to amend it should be grounded in an understanding of exactly how and why it is falling short of meeting its promise to these children. Our hope is that mapping the common implementation failures we have seen in …

Storied Lives In A Living Tradition: Women Rabbis And Jewish Community In 21st Century New Mexico, Miria Kano

Anthropology ETDs

Between 2001 and 2012, I collaborated with Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, Rabbi Malka Drucker, Rabbi Shefa Gold, Rabbi Min Kantrowitz, and Rabbi Deborah Brin to investigate the challenges and opportunities afforded by womens recent attainment of rabbinic ordination. As members of the first and second generations of women rabbis, they offer unique perspectives on the recent histories of both American and Jewish cultures. This dissertation is a narrative exploration of how these rabbis came of age, cultivated self-understanding, chose careers as spiritual leaders, crafted public identities, and formed communities in 20th/21st Century American Jewish societies. This research focuses on the role …

Consequences Of Prenatal Ethanol Exposure And Maternal Stress On Offspring, Miranda C. Staples Dec 2013

Consequences Of Prenatal Ethanol Exposure And Maternal Stress On Offspring, Miranda C. Staples

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Extensive evidence in humans suggests that exposure to insults during gestation, such as ethanol or maternal stress, can negatively impact the developing fetus in manners which can last into adulthood. These deleterious effects can include various behavioral challenges including cognitive impairments and increases in anxiety. These findings have been replicated in animal models of prenatal ethanol exposure and prenatal stress exposure, but little work has been conducted on measuring the interactive effects of the two prenatal insults in combination. Currently, there is no animal model of combined prenatal ethanol and prenatal stress exposures which has been utilized to systematically evaluate …

Children's Self Perception Of Weight, Carolyn Montoya Sep 2013

Children's Self Perception Of Weight, Carolyn Montoya

Nursing ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in children’s self-perceptions of weight based on age, gender, actual body mass index (BMI) category, grade level, and ethnicity compared with their clinically measured BMI and to determine the association of gender, age, grade level, race/ethnicity, and actual BMI category with their perception of ideal BMI category. A total of 424 children from a rural community in New Mexico, aged 8 to 11 years and in Grades 3 through 5, participated in this study. Of this sample 70% (n = 299) is Hispanic; 19% (n = 80) is …

Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann Sep 2013

Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann

Nursing ETDs

Obesity has become the most significant noninfectious health risk in the United States, and the major causes of death and disability are shifting to chronic, non-communicable health conditions that are largely attributable to physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, and other diet-related factors. Among children and adolescents, the overweight/obesity rate is approaching 32%, with 17.9% of adolescents becoming obese. While the obesity rate has doubled in all age groups in the United States, it has tripled among young adults aged 18 to 28 years, and 70% of adolescents who are at a healthy weight will become overweight or obese as adults. …

Role Of Buddhist Spiritual Practice In The Lives And Health Of Buddhist Nuns Living With A Chronic Illness In Sri Lanka, Sunny Wijesinghe Sep 2013

Role Of Buddhist Spiritual Practice In The Lives And Health Of Buddhist Nuns Living With A Chronic Illness In Sri Lanka, Sunny Wijesinghe

Nursing ETDs

This study focused on the role of Buddhist spiritual practice in the lives and health of Sri Lankan Buddhist nuns with a chronic illness. The concept of spirituality has emerged recurrently in research as a means to cope with chronic illness. The question as to whether Buddhism, as observed in traditionally Buddhist countries, influences coping in chronic illness, has received little attention. Buddhism covers several sects and even within the same sect practices vary depending on each socio-cultural environment. Any attempt to study Buddhism's role in chronic illness requires isolating not only a sect, but also a country in which …

Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker Sep 2013

Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker

Faculty Scholarship

Virtually every sector of today's economy would benefit from employing workers with more than superficial knowledge of the law. Fields potentially ripe for the concept include health-care policy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, public affairs, banking, and environmental sciences, to name just a few. An interdisciplinary approach would provide graduates of these new programs with greater access to the job markets of interdisciplinary partners—something that traditional joint degrees based on combining the J.D. program with master's degrees from other disciplines rarely do.

Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker Sep 2013

Legal Education For All (Or More Than Just Lawyers), Carol A. Parker

Faculty Scholarship

While the need to acquire a working understanding of our laws and regulations seems only to grow, access to legal information is still largely kept at a premium by legal educators, who provide it almost exclusively through the juris doctor degree.

Only a small percentage of American law schools offer master's-level legal-studies degrees, which are typically equivalent to taking two semesters' worth of law-school courses. These non-J.D. graduate degrees are aimed at students seeking knowledge about law, but combining such programs with subject matter drawn from other disciplines to create discrete programs remains rare.

Therapist Adherence And Competence As Predictors Of Client Outcomes In Adolescent Substance Use Treatment, Marita Campos-Melady Sep 2013

Therapist Adherence And Competence As Predictors Of Client Outcomes In Adolescent Substance Use Treatment, Marita Campos-Melady

Psychology ETDs

Central to the debate over the implementation of empirically supported treatments is whether or not therapist skill in delivering these therapies has a measurable, positive relationship with client outcome. The fidelity and skill with which therapists deliver these treatments have been studied under the constructs of therapist adherence and competence. There has been mixed evidence of the relationship between adherence and competence and client outcomes, that could be due to small sample sizes, potentially inadequate measures for rating therapists' skill, and limited statistical methods. The current study utilized a data set from the Adolescent and Family Treatment (AAFT) project in …

Mismatches Between Humans And Latent Semantic Analysis In Document Similarity Judgments, Kyunghun Jung Sep 2013

Mismatches Between Humans And Latent Semantic Analysis In Document Similarity Judgments, Kyunghun Jung

Psychology ETDs

Modeling how humans judge the semantic similarity between documents (e.g., abstracts from two different psychology articles) is an interesting and challenging topic in cognitive psychology. It also has practical implications for developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems, especially those designed for retrieving relevant information from a large database in response to a given query (e.g., finding new research articles related to a given abstract). Conversely, AI algorithms can provide a useful tool for testing human cognitive models. They can precisely simulate the consequences of specific assumptions about cognition, and these consequences can then be compared against actual human performance. In the …

Typology Of Couples Entering Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy: An Empirical Approach And Test Of Predictive Validity On Treatment Response, Benjamin Ladd Sep 2013

Typology Of Couples Entering Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy: An Empirical Approach And Test Of Predictive Validity On Treatment Response, Benjamin Ladd

Psychology ETDs

Behavioral Couple Therapy (BCT) has garnered considerable empirical support for its efficacy in resolving marital conflict. BCT also has documented success in treating individual health problems, including alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Consistent with the larger BCT framework, Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) theory considers social interactions and exchanges in response to alcohol as critical antecedents and reinforcers of alcohol use. Thus, the purported mechanisms behind such components (e.g. positive reciprocity, leveling & editing) are based on the implicit assumption that the relationships of individuals where one partner has a problem with alcohol work similarly to those in distressed couples which …

The Law Of One Price And Virtual Worlds, Michael Morrison Sep 2013

The Law Of One Price And Virtual Worlds, Michael Morrison

Economics ETDs

Price convergence and purchasing power parity are two important foundations to international trade theory. Yet there is still no consensus on their existence, despite numerous studies. While the debate over price convergence and purchasing power parity continues, the last several years have seen a substantial rise in the use of virtual worlds. Virtual worlds are interactive digital environments where individuals with an internet connection can come together to communicate, cooperate and trade. Virtual worlds create smaller copies of the real world. These copies lack many of the complexities found in the real world. This feature makes virtual worlds a unique …
