Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley Jul 2013

Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley

Sociology ETDs

American Indians and Alaska Natives are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and are more likely than the general population to suffer from diabetes-related complications. This study attempts to clarify the relationships between indigenous knowledge, land, local history/historical trauma, and diabetes on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, using place' as an anchoring concept. The concept of place is largely absent in sociological literature, and a growing number of researchers argue that place should be central to sociology. Further, many researchers argue that place and context matter for health and are necessary for a deeper understanding of …

Between Islamophobia And The Ummah: How Spanish Moroccans Are Negotiating Their Identities In Post 3-11 Madrid, Anwar Ouassini Jul 2013

Between Islamophobia And The Ummah: How Spanish Moroccans Are Negotiating Their Identities In Post 3-11 Madrid, Anwar Ouassini

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation explores how Spanish Moroccans are negotiating their identities in post 3-11 Madrid. In doing so, I explore and capture the lived discourses that reveal the underlying processes that are shaping their identities at the micro, meso, and macro level. The data for this research was collected through in-depth interviews with 33 Spanish- Moroccans residing in Madrid, Spain. Results revealed that Spanish Moroccan identities are increasingly racialized towards a Muslim-Arab religious identity by two ideological currents found at the local and the transnational level: Islamophobia and the Ummah. The Islamophobia racial project was experienced by my participants at the …

Investigating Factors Influencing Game Piracy In The Esports Settings Of South Korea, Eui-Yul Choi Jul 2013

Investigating Factors Influencing Game Piracy In The Esports Settings Of South Korea, Eui-Yul Choi

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

eSports, an abbreviation of electronic sports, is a virtual leisure activity (KeSPA, 2011). eSports has been developed through online networks and game software development (Jonasson & Thiborg, 2010), and has commanded national attention and popularity in South Korea. Within cyberspace linked over the Internet or Local Area Networks (LANs), many participants match electronic game skills against other participants with little spatiotemporal restraint. However, illegal downloading of game materials over the Internet has been prevalent and caused economic losses to game development companies (Korea Creative Content Agency, 2006b). The main purpose of this study was to propose a theoretical model describing …

A Case Study Of The Coaching Philosophy Of A Men's Ncaa Distance Running Coach: To What Extent Is It Humanistic?, Seth Jenny

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

A coaching philosophy is a set of basic principles or values framework that guide a coach in decision-making and behavior (Hogg, 1995). Opposite of a dictatorial philosophy, the humanistic coaching philosophy as an athlete-centered, collaborative, and non-manipulative process between athlete and coach, taking into account individual athlete differences and abilities, with the hopes of eventually developing an emancipated, self-regulated, adaptable, and self-confident athlete (Lyle, 1999). The goal of this case study was to explore the coaching philosophy and methods of a successful mens NCAA distance running coach and describe to what extent the stated coaching philosophy and coaching methods of …

Physical Activity And Psychosocial Adjustment Among 1st And 2nd Year Undergraduate Students, Vanessa Mikan

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The transition from adolescence into young adulthood can present many new challenges. How well and to what degree students are able to effectively meet the demands and challenges of college has been labeled as adjustment (Mattanah, Hancock, & Brand, 2004). There is a growing interest and need for effective strategies and programs that can assist students in the transition to college. The purpose of this study was to identify how participation in physical activity, as measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Short Form may assist or hinder in students academic, social, personal-emotional adjustment and institutional attachment to college …

Engagement Of Mexican Immigrant Families In Schools: Educational Impact For School Reform, James Lujan

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Family engagement is widely believed to enhance childrens academic achievement. Some children, particularly Latino English language learners, are consistently found at the low end of the achievement gap. This qualitative study examined the relationship between the Epstein Model of Parent Involvement, and the personal engagement of Mexican immigrant families who have a son or daughter enrolled at the middle school level. This study employed a constructivist grounded theory analysis method. The participants of this study are Mexican immigrant parents who comprised the core sample. Data was collected in participants' homes, community agencies, neighborhoods, and schools. Data sources included interviews, participant …

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky Jul 2013

The Ethereal Promise: Progressive Ideology, Internationalism, And Propaganda In World War Ii Radio Drama, Steven Kostelecky

History ETDs

Radio drama in America between the years 1939 and 1945 both reflected the domestic life of its citizens and helped direct it. The United States government, independent organizations, broadcast networks, and individual producers deployed radio drama to promote the entry of the United States onto the world stage both by military intervention in World War II and as a democratic conciliator in shaping the postwar world. My thesis addresses the question of whether radio drama deployed as propaganda during World War II acted solely to reinforce an extant American ideology necessary for the conduct of the war or if it …

The Gracioso In The Theater Of Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla: A Manifestation Of Carnivalesque Humor In Siglo De Oro Theater., Maria Conklin Jul 2013

The Gracioso In The Theater Of Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla: A Manifestation Of Carnivalesque Humor In Siglo De Oro Theater., Maria Conklin

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study examines the humor employed by the stock comic figure, known as the gracioso, in the plays of Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, a major playwright of Early Modern Spanish Theater. The self-mocking nature of the humor employed by that theaters indispensable gracioso, with its subsequent prioritization of laughter, ties the comic figure to the then surviving medieval tradition of the popular carnivalesque. This tie lends the popular stock comic figure's humorous output an overall popular/carnivalesque identity that gives expression to a popular sub-culture. As a representative of the popular sub-culture, the stock comic figure's comical contribution, the laughter it …

The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora Jul 2013

The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora

Political Science ETDs

Objective This exploratory research project considers the role that the political culture of individual U.S. states may play in determining variation in the countrys infant mortality rate. Specifically, do conventional and/or racialized measures of political culture help explain state-to-state variation, particularly in black infant mortality, as well as the longstanding mortality gap between infants born to black and white women? Conventional measures of political culture in this study include a state's past voting record in presidential elections, as well as how states are categorized under Elazar's (1966) typology of state civic culture (i.e., as moralistic, individualistic or traditionalistic). Racialized measures …

Skinning The Deer: A Love Story, Heather Campbell Jul 2013

Skinning The Deer: A Love Story, Heather Campbell

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation consists of a novel entitled Skinning the Deer: A Love Story. Alternating between the landscapes of New Mexico and rural Maine, the novel examines the life of tortured lesbian Hannah Huff and the brutal excision of her glorious wings—those magical appendages she grew in secret—the two downy white miracles she believed would be her ticket out of Monkstown, Maine, a desperate landscape of backwoods trailers, dogs, and family members, where her only interactions are either detached or violent. While the novel alternates between Hannah as an adult and Hannah as a child, it is first and foremost a …

Why Blame Me? Interpreting Counselor Student Resistance To Racially Themed Course Content As Complicity With White Racial Hegemony, Evonne Denise Olson Jul 2013

Why Blame Me? Interpreting Counselor Student Resistance To Racially Themed Course Content As Complicity With White Racial Hegemony, Evonne Denise Olson

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Counselor educators commonly experience resistance from students when the classroom focus turns to issues, literature, projects, or discussions involving race. Recognizing this resistance as an obstacle to learning, scholars developed strategies to address it. These strategies, however, have been based largely on individualistic conceptions of student resistance that obscure its possible sociopolitical influences and overlook the potential for formulating strategies to address its sociopolitical underpinnings. To expand the view of student resistance as more than simply individual behavior and thereby assist in developing and improving tools to overcome it, this project interprets student resistance as a sociopolitical phenomenon by connecting …

Relationships Among Retrospective Perceptions Of Parents And Current Perceptions Of Partner To Psychological Distress Of Middle-Age Adults, Leslie Rose Peterson Jul 2013

Relationships Among Retrospective Perceptions Of Parents And Current Perceptions Of Partner To Psychological Distress Of Middle-Age Adults, Leslie Rose Peterson

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This study was designed as a constructive replication of Wintre and Gates (2006) research which investigated the relationships between recalled parents' parenting styles and perceptions of reciprocity with their parents in adolescence, as well as current perceptions of spousal/partner reciprocity to their current psychological distress as middle-age adults. The operational definition of parenting styles for this research study is based on Baumrind's theory of childhood parenting styles, and the construct of parent-child reciprocity is derived from Youniss' theory of late adolescents' perceived reciprocity. The present study was based on the data individually collected from 100 adults 40-58 years of age …

Teacher Perceptions About Diversity And The Achievement Gap: Understanding The Discursive Construction Of Whiteness, Virginia Padilla Vigil Jul 2013

Teacher Perceptions About Diversity And The Achievement Gap: Understanding The Discursive Construction Of Whiteness, Virginia Padilla Vigil

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Teacher perceptions about diversity and the achievement gap were examined. Participants were alternative teacher licensure candidates at the student teaching phase of their preparation program. Two-hour individual, in-depth, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with each of the participants. Additionally, the participants participated in focus groups that engaged them in discourse about the achievement gap (definitions, contributing factors, and solutions). Finally, the participants submitted written statements related to diversity, multiculturalism and critically reflective practice. Critical discourse analysis of the interview/focus group transcripts and the participants written statements was conducted to identify the underlying ideologies of the participants. The study yielded three …

Pedagogy Of Post 9/11 United States: Muslim American Students' Experiences, Teachers' Pedagogies, And Textbooks' Analysis, Randa Nabil Elbih Jul 2013

Pedagogy Of Post 9/11 United States: Muslim American Students' Experiences, Teachers' Pedagogies, And Textbooks' Analysis, Randa Nabil Elbih

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The events and aftermath of 9/11 continue to cause life changes for many Americans, particularly Muslim American students who have experienced socio-cultural and pedagogic exclusion, harassment and discrimination due to ignorance and misunderstandings. Teachers must inform their students about 9/11 and the War on Terror to eliminate misunderstandings and intolerance towards a vulnerable population. In spite of its importance, many schools have not implemented the topic as part of their curricula. It is not even included as part of social studies state standards. Recent editions of US history textbooks include some information about 9/11 and the War on Terror that …

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis Jul 2013

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In numerous articles and texts published within the arenas of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, much has been written on the trope of the shared bath-and even more specifically the hammam-as a space of orientalism. Although researchers such as Magreban sociologist Fatima Mernissi, Algerian writer Malek Alloula, and film scholars Serena Anderlini-DOnofrio and Elisabetta Girelli have offered images of le bain turc in expository texts, art and media, and films as those which offer 'Turkish Dreams' of orientalist fantasy, this paper focuses on the space as a loci of performative strategies and tactical moves, which abet social resistance. I argue …

The Social Transformation Of Health Inequities: Understanding The Discourse On Health Disparities In The United States, Sonia Bettez Jul 2013

The Social Transformation Of Health Inequities: Understanding The Discourse On Health Disparities In The United States, Sonia Bettez

Sociology ETDs

Discourse in the United States characterized health disparities' as the disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality suffered by racial, ethnic and other disadvantaged populations. This dissertation contributes a theory of social construction that transformed health inequalities and inequities into 'health disparities,' a hegemonic (dominant) concept that prevented structural analysis of root causes and effective solutions. Consequently health disparities remain. My study focuses on the discourse during the latter part of President Clinton's administration (1999-2001), when eliminating 'health disparities' became a major objective. Anchored by hegemony and racial formation theories, and using critical discourse analysis as the principal research method, I …

College Success: An Exploratory Study Of How Underrepresented Minority Students Enter And Persist In Stem Programs, Eleanor Andrews Jul 2013

College Success: An Exploratory Study Of How Underrepresented Minority Students Enter And Persist In Stem Programs, Eleanor Andrews

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Without the proper academic preparation and cultural capital, underrepresented minority students may not find their path to pursuing science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degrees. To gain a better understanding of how underrepresented minority students experienced college success, this study examined how they entered a STEM program of study and persisted in the program beyond their first year at the university. Three important contexts presented the greatest barriers to persistence: low socioeconomic status, first generation status, and under-preparation in math. Participants within these contexts were enabled to find a path to attend college and persist with targeted support and advice …

The Evolution Of Constructions: The Case Of Be About To, Joshua Mee Jul 2013

The Evolution Of Constructions: The Case Of Be About To, Joshua Mee

Linguistics ETDs

I examine the evolution of constructions involved in the emergence of be about to, used to indicate an immediate future event. Using three corpora from different time periods going as far back as the Old English period, I take synchronic snapshots of the gradual change in constructions leading up to the present day usage of be about to. The selected corpora parallel Disney's (2009) account of the grammaticalization of be going to for the purpose of comparison. It is found that the emergence of be about to is a complex story involving the development of multiple constructions through time. These …

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko Jul 2013

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko

Art & Art History ETDs

Despite all of the recent attention paid to issues of identity in art history, mainstream ideals of normativity have yet to be fully analyzed and reclaimed as subject positions from which artistic examinations begin. As a symptom of larger culture, there often remains a lack of what sociologist Ruth Frankenberg refers to as cognizance' about the continuing role of normative ideals as they are assumed to be unmarked, or transcendent, positions. While all four of the case studies in this project visually challenge assumptions of normativity, the reception of the work and/or the artist's own descriptions negate some of the …

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday Jul 2013

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday

Anthropology ETDs

This paper analyzes the secrets revealed by Korean high school girls. Despite their struggles being known to the Korean public-at-large, the majority of these secrets express the students dismay at not meeting the high standards expected of teenage girls in successfully preparing for the future. In this case study, the public airing of the otherwise silenced acknowledgement of the authors' perceived deficiencies and failures illuminates processes of biopower (the subject-based regulation and disciplining of bodies) embedded within the Korean nation-state building project. I explore how the Neo-Confucian principles of reverence, obedience, and self-cultivation work together with the neoliberal, post-industrial consumerist …

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins Jul 2013

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

We evaluated the visual response to infrared (IR) in humans after dark adaptation. In seven adult participants, visual perception, visual sensitivity, and the visual response to IR after light adaptation were tested. Over the course of dark adaptation, we found visual perception and sensitivity to our experimental IR stimulus increased, while the relative IR intensity necessary for perception decreased. Visual perception of the IR stimulus was abolished during a transient light exposure; however, when turned back off, perception to the IR stimulus returned for all participants. These novel findings may be relevant for both pre-clinical and clinical visual research.

Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus Jul 2013

Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Public participation has enjoyed a long, if embattled, history in the field of urban planning in the U.S. Although mandated by federal, state and local regulations, designing processes for meaningful public participation has proven difficult for both practical and political reasons. Recognizing the inadequacies of traditional participation methods – particularly in strengthening democracy, valuing local knowledge and pursuing social justice - many planning practitioners and participation theorists held high aspirations for the potential of communication technology in the networked world of Web 2.0 to transform the role of the public in improving the quality of urban environments. Although research in …

Quantitative Determinants Of Prefabs: A Corpus-Based, Experimental Study Of Multiword Units In The Lexicon, Clayton Beckner Jul 2013

Quantitative Determinants Of Prefabs: A Corpus-Based, Experimental Study Of Multiword Units In The Lexicon, Clayton Beckner

Linguistics ETDs

In recent years many researchers have been rethinking the Words and Rules' model of syntax (Pinker 1999), instead arguing that language processing relies on a large number of preassembled multiword units, or 'prefabs' (Bolinger 1976). A usage-based perspective predicts that linguistic units, including prefabs, arise via repeated use, and prefabs should thus be associated with the frequency with which words co-occur (Langacker 1987). Indeed, in several recent experiments, corpus analysis is found to be associated with behavioral measures for multiword sequences (Kapatsinski and Radicke 2009, Ellis and Simpson-Vlach 2009). This dissertation supplements such findings with two new psycholinguistic investigations of …

"Every 'One' And Every 'Thing' Can Be Loved": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Networked Self-Representation By The Objectùm Sexuality Community, Kristen L. Cole

Communication ETDs

Using rhetorical criticism informed by actor-network theory (ANT), in this dissertation I explore the emergence of queer identity and queer community building within the Objectùm Sexuality Internationale Web site (OSI)--the largest source of information related to a community of over 300 hundred individuals who experience emotional and romantic desire towards objects. My goals in this study are (1) to identify and understand how rhetorical strategies are emergent and networked (rather than individually enacted) within the OSI Web site; and (2) how these emergent rhetorical strategies promote multiplicity of sexual desire and identity through the challenging of heteronormative and anthropocentric binaries …

The Return Of The Serbian Other: Interpretative Repertoires Of Nationalism And Identity Politics In Online News Discourses On Serbia's Integration In The European Union, Jelena Petrovic Jul 2013

The Return Of The Serbian Other: Interpretative Repertoires Of Nationalism And Identity Politics In Online News Discourses On Serbia's Integration In The European Union, Jelena Petrovic

Communication ETDs

After more than a decade of political investment in integration, Serbia is still awaiting full membership into the European Union and thus is kept on the periphery of an imagined European community. In this difficult and uncertain process, Serbs have faced fractured national discourses that are inscribed with new forms of liminality encapsulated in an externally ascribed position of "flawed Europeans."This dissertation explores the co-construction of national identities in the context of public debate about the country's integration into the EU on Serbian online news websites. Informed by the theoretical and methodological framework of discursive psychology, this research identified interpretative …

Farming And Fighting As Practice And Pedagogy: A Procedural Field Analysis Of Digital Games, Alexis Pulos Jul 2013

Farming And Fighting As Practice And Pedagogy: A Procedural Field Analysis Of Digital Games, Alexis Pulos

Communication ETDs

Video games are currently one of the leading entertainment mediums across the globe, with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision) selling 4.3 million dollars in the first week of sales and adding to the parent company Activision Blizzard's 2011 revenue of 4.9 billion dollars. In 2011 the North American video game industry had a revenue of $25 billion (ESA, 2012), more than twice the film industry establishing video games as a predominant entertainment medium. However, in the fifty-four years that video games have been a medium for meaning making, the majority of research has focused on quantitative analysis …

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert Jul 2013

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Social justice movements organize against contemporary conditions of oppression and domination. Today’s movements often target neoliberalism as an agent of both economic and cultural marginalization, citing environmental degradation, increasing wealth disparities in the information/service economy, and destruction of community-based institutions in the name of capital accumulation. One such example is the right to the city, both an intellectual idea and organizing framework for social action. The right to the city utilizes a Marxist framework to argue that cities are part of capitalist processes of production and, thus, space can and must be a site of intervention in the service of …
