Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown Sep 2014

Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In this thesis I highlight the literary techniques used in fabliaux to understand the power struggles traversed by the characters. This work focuses on methods of avoiding the shame emasculation in scenes from the fabliaux Berangier au lonc Cul, Du Prestre qui fu mis au lardier, Du Prestre crucefié and De la Saineresse. A fabliau is an amusing short story in poetic form, originally performed by troubadours and trouvères. This form is most present in manuscript examples from the 12th to the 14th century. The stories involve simple characters, word play and idiomatic expressions. I argue that literary mechanisms are …

Development Of Novel Small Molecules For Imaging And Drug Release, Yanting Cao

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Small organic molecules, including small molecule based fluorescent probes, small molecule based drugs or prodrugs, and smart multifunctional fluorescent drug delivery systems play important roles in biological research, drug discovery, and clinical practices. Despite the significant progress made in these fields, the development of novel and diverse small molecules is needed to meet various demands for research and clinical applications. My Ph.D study focuses on the development of novel functional molecules for recognition, imaging and drug release. In the first part, a turn-on fluorescent probe is developed for the detection of intracellular adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) levels based on multiplexing recognitions. Considering …

Effects Of Intimate Partner Violence On Maternal Reflective Functioning And Attachment Relationship In Hispanic/Latina Women And Their Preschool-Age Children: A Qualitative Study, Patricia Martinez Burr

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Research indicates that thousands of women across the world suffer intimate partner violence (IPV) under the hands of their partner on a daily basis. Understanding the effects of intimate partner violence on their psychological functioning and maternal response to very young children is crucial to our understanding and provision of appropriate treatment. This qualitative study used a transcendental phenomenological approach designed to analyze the in-depth interview responses of ten Hispanic/Latina mothers of preschool-age children, who had been victims of IPV within the last year to examine these effects. Given the researchers desire to better understand the effects of IPV on …

Transnational Perspectives On Authenticity, Representation, And Expressions Of Visual Memory In Jewish Women And Childrens Holocaust Narratives, Tania Paloma García

American Studies ETDs

This Master's Thesis explores the Jewish Holocaust (1939-1945) from within a Transnational American Studies framework by emphasizing the importance of learning about multiple genocides within a global or transnational context. An examination into the link between postcolonialism and the Holocaust contributes to broadening global dialogues on Holocaust remembrance and genocide prevention. Through the interdisciplinary vantage points of history, memory, and literature, this thesis invokes a transnational methodology to engage in an academic conversation about the United States government's lack of involvement in adequately addressing the Holocaust. This thesis highlights Jewish Holocaust Literature as a means to understand the unique perspectives …

Revisioning Reality: Normative Resistance In The Cultural Works Of The Lincoln Motion Picture Company, Nella Larsen, And Allan Rohan Crite, 1915-1945, Andrea Louise Mays Sep 2014

Revisioning Reality: Normative Resistance In The Cultural Works Of The Lincoln Motion Picture Company, Nella Larsen, And Allan Rohan Crite, 1915-1945, Andrea Louise Mays

American Studies ETDs

Despite the fact that nineteenth and twentieth century biologist and Social Darwinists theories of race have been dispelled, the social residue of white supremacist ideologies continue to have social and political implications throughout American society. America's racial hierarchy, and whiteness as a social and racial construct instantiated within it, against which every other group of people has been relationally situated, has helped not only to define non-white racial subjects in inferior terms, it has also guaranteed a perpetuation of race-based structural and social inequalities in United States of America. African American Studies, Critical Race Theory, Whiteness Studies, and most recently …

Choreographer As Coach: Facilitating Engagement During The Dance Making Process, Emily D. Bryan Jul 2014

Choreographer As Coach: Facilitating Engagement During The Dance Making Process, Emily D. Bryan

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Dance is formed from the interactions between the choreographer and the dancers that occur during the workshop and rehearsal phase of the dance making process. The choreographer's art is brought to life not solely through the creation of the choreography, but through the interpretation of the choreography in the bodies of the dancers. Thus, the time spent coaching dancers is an important piece of the choreographer's work. Artists have written about the value of dancers in their work, and educators provide theories about training dancers in the classroom, but little has been written about practical methods for the professional choreographer …

Demandingness, Self-Interest And Benevolence In Śāntideva’S Introduction To The Practice Of Awakening (Bodhicaryāvatāra), Stephen E. Harris Jul 2014

Demandingness, Self-Interest And Benevolence In Śāntideva’S Introduction To The Practice Of Awakening (Bodhicaryāvatāra), Stephen E. Harris

Philosophy ETDs

This dissertation explores how benevolence and self-interest converge, thereby lessening moral demandingness, in the writing of the eighth century Indian Buddhist monk, Śāntideva. In the opening chapter, I argue that Śāntideva appears vulnerable to the overdemandingness objection, the claim that a moral system asks too much of its followers. This is because he endorses an extremely demanding process of virtue development during which an individual commits to becoming a bodhisattva, the Buddhist saint who voluntarily takes countless rebirths, often in painful situations, in order to attain full Buddhahood and liberate all beings from suffering. In the dissertation, I show that …

Heidegger And The Ethics Of The Earth: Eco-Phenomenology In The Age Of Technology, Tara Kennedy Jul 2014

Heidegger And The Ethics Of The Earth: Eco-Phenomenology In The Age Of Technology, Tara Kennedy

Philosophy ETDs

Martin Heidegger came to see the history of Western metaphysics as a series of ontotheological epochs. These epochs, he argues, culminate in the age informed by the metaphysics of Friedrich Nietzsche. According to this ontotheological paradigm, entities are nothing more than meaningless resources to be optimized. This paper argues that this is the source of the environmental crises we face. In order to see our way through and beyond this nihilistic ontotheological age, we must recognize the ontological source of all existence, that which Heidegger called being as such. The philosophical tradition of phenomenology offers us an ideal method for …

Ignoring Individual Differences In Times Of Assessment In Growth Curve Modeling, Patrick Coulombe Jul 2014

Ignoring Individual Differences In Times Of Assessment In Growth Curve Modeling, Patrick Coulombe

Psychology ETDs

Researchers often collect longitudinal data so as to model change over time in a phenomenon and for a population of interest. Inevitably, there will be some variation across individuals in specific time intervals between assessments. By necessity or by choice, a researcher can decide to ignore these individual differences in times of assessments. In this simulation study of growth curve modeling, I investigate how ignoring individual differences in time points when modeling change over time relates to convergence and admissibility of solutions, bias in estimates of parameters, power to detect change over time, and, when there is no change over …

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy Jul 2014

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy

American Studies ETDs

New Mexico's atomic tourism acts to render the atomic bomb simultaneously so exceptional that it is viewed as the pinnacle of Western intelligence, and yet also so un-exceptional that it is banal, as typified by kitschy atomic souvenirs. A primary way in which New Mexico's atomic tourist sites accomplish this paradoxical narrative is through gendered and racialized discourses in exhibits, gift shops, and on-site narratives. The racialized trope of the "vanishing Native" functions in these spaces to shore up the colonialist progress narrative in which white Western science and Manifest Destiny inevitably result in the creation of the "exceptional" bomb …

Sex Differences In The Relationship Between White Matter Connectivity And Creativity, Sephira Ryman Jul 2014

Sex Differences In The Relationship Between White Matter Connectivity And Creativity, Sephira Ryman

Psychology ETDs

Creative cognition emerges from a complex network of interacting brain regions. This study investigated the relationship between the structural organization of the human brain and aspects of creative cognition quantified by divergent thinking tasks. Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) was used to obtain fiber tracts from 83 segmented cortical regions. This information was represented as a network and metrics of connectivity organization, including connectivity strength, clustering and efficiency were computed, and their relationship to personal levels of creativity was examined. Permutation testing identified significant sex differences in the relationship between global connectivity and creativity as measured by divergent thinking tests. Females …

Increasing Your Brain Potential: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Enhancement Of Behavior And Event-Related Potentials In Tests Of Attention And Impuslivity, Brian Coffman Jul 2014

Increasing Your Brain Potential: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Enhancement Of Behavior And Event-Related Potentials In Tests Of Attention And Impuslivity, Brian Coffman

Psychology ETDs

Cognitive control of attention and decision making is a defining feature of the human intellect. Our ancestors survival in the past and our success as individuals today is reliant on our ability to respond to stimuli in the environment, learn from our mistakes, and make complex decisions based on cognitive deliberation, rather than impulsiveness. This study examined the effectiveness of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) for modulation of cognitive control of attention and impulsiveness. It was hypothesized that anodal tDCS of the right VLPFC would enhance cognitive control of attention and impulsiveness, that tDCS would enhance ERP responses related to …

Moderate Fetal Alcohol Exposure, The Nucleus Accumbens, And Alcohol Consumption In Adulthood, James Rice Jul 2014

Moderate Fetal Alcohol Exposure, The Nucleus Accumbens, And Alcohol Consumption In Adulthood, James Rice

Psychology ETDs

Recent findings using a moderate prenatal alcohol consumption model in rats found that male offspring had reduced dendritic fields in medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens (NAc). These results suggest that moderate fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) leads to long-lasting alterations in brain regions involved in reward processing that could lead to abnormal behavior related to ethanol (EtOH) in adulthood. Here, five experiments were carried out to establish the extent to which moderate FAE leads to increased EtOH consumption in adulthood, how functional and structural alterations in the NAc are related to EtOH consumption, and whether moderate FAE has any …

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen Jul 2014

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen

Special Education ETDs

The social construction of disability posits that media play an important role in the construction of disability. Few studies have systematically examined the role of disability in film or television. Engaging in a multiple perspective analysis, this dissertation examined the role of disability in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Data were analyzed with a content analysis, a thematic analysis, and an ideological rhetorical criticism. Disability was found to be used as a tool of character, plot, and atmosphere development. The data also suggested that negative assumptions of disability, often reinforcing of stereotypes, were readily apparent in the series …

School-Age Children's Perception Of Stress In The Hospital: A Draw And Tell Story, Susan Wechter Jul 2014

School-Age Children's Perception Of Stress In The Hospital: A Draw And Tell Story, Susan Wechter

Nursing ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of stress for hospitalized school-age child, seven to nine years of age, through a child-centered draw and tell technique. Over 3 million children are hospitalized every year (NACHRI, 2012). Hospitalization of children is reserved for increasingly complex care. Since the 1960s, it has been well known that hospitalization can be a traumatic experience for children (King & Ziegler, 1981; Thompson, 1986; Vernon, Foley, Simpowicz, & Schulman, 1965; Visintainer & Wolfer, 1975). This experience elicits feelings of fear, uncertainty, pain and discomfort that can affect a child's healing, behavior and health …

Jiggs And Other Stories, Vondell Jones Jul 2014

Jiggs And Other Stories, Vondell Jones

English Language and Literature ETDs

Jiggs and Other Stories represent a diverse sampling of my work as a UNM graduate student and a writer of fiction. The works presented here are a pastiche of genres that include magical realism, tragedy, absurdist fiction, and fantasy and adventure. Beyond those significant categories, however, these stories are the product of my imagination. The power of fiction itself—Id like to believe—depends upon the capacities of the mind. When knowledge, experience, restless imagination and bold creativity are combined—good fiction supersedes the boundaries of literary categorization. My intention, in part, is to have these stories serve as an homage to many …

Self-Reported Barriers To Quality Physical Education By Physical Education Specialists In The Island Of Puerto Rico, Enid Rodriguez-Ayala Jul 2014

Self-Reported Barriers To Quality Physical Education By Physical Education Specialists In The Island Of Puerto Rico, Enid Rodriguez-Ayala

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine which barriers physical education teachers in the Island of Puerto Rico perceive to influence their teaching of the established physical education curriculum. The instrument Perceived Barriers to Teach Survey, a modification of the Opportunities to Learn instrument (2010) from NASPE was used to collect data from a stratified sample of 600 physical education teachers from all the school levels in Puerto Rico. Five-point Likert-type scales and open- ended questions were used to measure respondents perceptions regarding barriers to teach the established curriculum. The results of the study were as follows. First, teachers …

Hippies In The Park: Yosemite And The Counterculture In The Sixties American West, Guy Mcclellan Jul 2014

Hippies In The Park: Yosemite And The Counterculture In The Sixties American West, Guy Mcclellan

History ETDs

For many visitors, Yosemite's park boundaries symbolize a division between nature and civilization. On a busy day in Yosemite Valley, however, that divide seems nonexistent. Cars slither by, glinting in the sun. The valley echoes with camera clicks. Tourists stream into grocery stores and souvenir shops. The post office sorts mail and the dentist cleans teeth. In short, Yosemite Valley is little different than a small town. The American West is defined by wilderness but dominated by cities. Yosemite Valley, the park's population center, exemplifies the tension between the two. My research examines this ideological conflict through the lens of …

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon Jul 2014

The Impact Of State Certification Of Community Health Workers On Team Climate Among Registered Nurses In The United States, Mark Siemon

Nursing ETDs

A number of states have adopted certification programs for community health workers (CHWs) to increase oversight, allow for direct funding, and improve recognition of CHWs as members of the health care team. More states are considering CHW certification programs to increase the use of CHWs by health care organizations with the hopes of improving health outcomes and decreasing health disparities. There has been little research into the impact of state CHW certification on the adoption and dissemination of CHWs into the existing health care system. This study examined the impact of state CHW certification on the perceptions of team climate …

Reproducing Prevention: Teen Pregnancy And Intimate Citizenship In The Post-Welfare Era, Clare M. Daniel Jul 2014

Reproducing Prevention: Teen Pregnancy And Intimate Citizenship In The Post-Welfare Era, Clare M. Daniel

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines the politics of teen pregnancy prevention in the 1990s and early 2000s within public policy, popular culture, and local and national nonprofit advocacy. Widely viewed as a distressing social problem, teenage reproduction has provoked decades of prevention and regulation that pervade across public and private sectors. Teen pregnancy has been associated with, if not fully blamed for, a host of other so-called social problems throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and the beginning of the twenty-first century. As scholars such as Kristen Luker and Lisa Arai have labored to illustrate, causal connections between adolescent reproduction and the social ills …
