Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril Jul 2014

Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation studies the ways that Mexican Americans experienced time as a colonizing force in the US Southwest between 1848 and 1940. I argue that Mexican American writing of this period exposes oppressive iterations of time within US modernity and often points toward possibilities of decolonizing time. The project focuses on political and economic constructions of US progress, which denied Mexican Americans presence within US temporal imaginings. My analysis moves from material to ideological temporal constructions as I analyze forms of time concerning wage labor, railroad operations, investment capitalism, judicial processes, congressional proceedings, Manifest Destiny, commodity fetishism, intellectual production, historical …

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac Jul 2014

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac

Geography ETDs

This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

Mirando Hacia El Futuro: Using Multilevel Growth Models To Examine The Achievement Gap Between White And Hispanic Students, Renee Delgado Jul 2014

Mirando Hacia El Futuro: Using Multilevel Growth Models To Examine The Achievement Gap Between White And Hispanic Students, Renee Delgado

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Academic achievement gaps have been a topic of study for researchers within the United States of America for many decades because there has been a steady achievement disparity between White students and students of color. The mathematics achievement gap for the largest growing population, Hispanic students, has not changed when compared to White students over the last few decades (Dillon, 2009; Hemphill, Vanneman, & Rahman, 2011; Perie, Moran, & Lutkus, 2005). Utilizing mathematics achievement scores from students in 3rd-5th grades in a large Southwestern Urban School District, levels of math achievement between White and Hispanic students were compared to examine …

A Differential Item Functioning Analysis Of The New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment, Walter Gilmore Jul 2014

A Differential Item Functioning Analysis Of The New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment, Walter Gilmore

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

English language proficiency assessments are currently in use by the 50 states (Wolf, Farnsworth, & Herman, 2008). Unfortunately, validations studies seldom address the effects of home languages on the use and interpretation of these assessments. If this step is overlooked, the assessment may include items that unfairly position one group of home language scores over another group. An omission of home languages was the case for the New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment (NMELPA) (Harcourt Assessment, Inc., 2006, 2007). For this reason, the NMELPA was investigated for group differences between those with first language origins in Spanish and Navajo, the …

Initial Development Of A Medical Information Literacy Questionnaire, Sarah Knox Morley Jul 2014

Initial Development Of A Medical Information Literacy Questionnaire, Sarah Knox Morley

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Originating from the field of library science, information literacy (IL) is defined as a broad set of skills and abilities necessary to locate, evaluate and use information ethically and legally. This important skill set is incorporated into general competency requirements for postgraduate residency programs, however no standardized instrument currently exists to measure resident physician IL knowledge and skills. This study addresses that gap by developing and pilot testing an instrument aimed at measuring information literacy competence in resident physicians. The author constructed a questionnaire of sixty-nine multiple-choice items to assess skills covering five IL domains. Utilizing the Content Validity Ratio …

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky Jul 2014

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky

History ETDs

Since the Enlightenment, Anglo-American temperance thinkers—who were usually clergymen and physicians—have expressed broader concerns about intoxication and addiction with rhetoric that simultaneously pathologized and criminalized the unsanctioned use of psychoactive substances. During the first half of the eighteenth century, a period known as the Gin Craze, rising levels of urban drunkenness in England came under the sustained gaze of temperance-minded doctors and churchmen, who used a shared language of contagion, disease, and slavery to problematize intoxication simultaneously as a medical and criminal condition. Building on Enlightenment English temperance thought, which was transferred into the United States by physician Benjamin Rush, …

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Venisa Martinez

American Studies ETDs

This study seeks to explain this curious and unknown connection of Albuquerque flamenco to Eva Encinias-Sandoval and the dance traditions of Nuevomexicanos. I seek to identify the history and social impact of this rich and distinct New Mexico flamenco tradition by tracing the development of Encinias-Sandoval's career and the establishment of her now world-class flamenco arts program, offered through the University of New Mexico's Dance and Theatre Department, as well as thorough affiliates and organizations of the National Institute of Flamenco. More specifically, my thesis describes how Eva Encinias-Sandoval built and continues to anchor this inspiring expressive art form in …

Moment-Based Accelerators For Kinetic Problems With Application To Inertial Confinement Fusion, William Taitano Jul 2014

Moment-Based Accelerators For Kinetic Problems With Application To Inertial Confinement Fusion, William Taitano

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

In inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the kinetic ion and charge separation field effects may play a significant role in the difference between the measured neutron yield in experiments and the predicted yield from fluid codes. Two distinct of approaches exists in modeling plasma physics phenomena: fluid and kinetic approaches. While the fluid approach is computationally less expensive, robust closures are difficult to obtain for a wide separation in temperature and density. While the kinetic approach is a closed system, it resolves the full 6D phase space and classic explicit numerical schemes restrict both the spatial and time-step size to a …

Changes In Student Proving Skills And Attitudes Following A Cooperative Learning Seminar, Martha Byrne

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation details research studies designed to explore undergraduate math students beliefs and attitudes about mathematical proof, ability to compose valid proofs, and ability to read and validate purported proofs written by other students. In two studies, a cohort of seminar participants were assessed twice on their attitudes and beliefs about mathematical proof, their ability to compose proofs, and their ability to validate arguments. Between assessments, these participants worked on carefully crafted problem sets in a Cooperative Learning environment. In each study, a cohort of comparison participants took both assessments but did not engage in structured, cooperative work in the …

Observability Of User-Interfaces For Linear Hybrid Systems Under Collaborative Control, Tasha Hammond Jul 2014

Observability Of User-Interfaces For Linear Hybrid Systems Under Collaborative Control, Tasha Hammond

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Human interaction with automation is ubiquitous, occurring in many cyberphysical systems such as cell phones, automobiles, and commercial aircraft. When interacting with such systems, human users are only exposed to a simplified representation the complex system structure in the form of an interface. The human can observe system outputs and make control inputs via this interface. Problems with human-automation interaction occur when the interface does not provide enough information or provides misinformation about the underlying system, such that the human cannot determine the current state of the automation. The user's knowledge of the current system state and prediction of the …

Analyzing Navajo Discourse: Investigating Form And Function Of Intonational Units In Referential Discourse, Michele Kiser Jul 2014

Analyzing Navajo Discourse: Investigating Form And Function Of Intonational Units In Referential Discourse, Michele Kiser

Linguistics ETDs

Extensive research has been conducted on the Navajo verb complex (prefix morphology) and specific constructions (i.e. relative clause structure, subject-object-inversion), but to date the proposed establishment of a method to analyze actual discourse from a functional or usage based approach has not occurred. The goal of this study is twofold. The first is to establish a method to analyze spoken Navajo using the Intonation Units (IU) as a measure as it occurs in natural, uninterrupted speech, according to the parameters outlined by Chafe (1994), and show the influence of the morphological complexity of Navajo on the size of the IU. …

Goal-Oriented Disclosure Design For Shale Oil And Gas Development, Kate Konschnik Jul 2014

Goal-Oriented Disclosure Design For Shale Oil And Gas Development, Kate Konschnik

Natural Resources Journal

States have acted quickly to respond to the public’s demand for information on the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing. Proponents of these disclosure requirements have relied on a number of policy rationales. However, the resulting disclosure systems may not be achieving stated goals. Ineffective disclosure requirements risk undermining public confidence in the disclosure process and waste an important opportunity to put these disclosures to work. This article suggests using a Goal-Oriented Disclosure Design approach to HFC disclosure, built around the goals for disclosure, the information end users need to target in pursuit of each goal, and the feedback loops those …

The Social Construction And Broaden-Build Effects Of Appreciation, Recognition, And Reward At Work As Portrayed In Four Contemporary Films, Andrew Gavin Leach

Communication ETDs

Many employees feel underappreciated, unrecognized, and undervalued in todays corporate, white collar environment (Herman& Dasborough, 2008; Ariani, D. W. 2013). Global economic crises, rising housing prices and high unemployment have all contributed to the prevailing thought that it an employee should just be happy with having a job. However, many organizations have found that evoking positive emotion in the workplace is a win-win situation for them and their employees (Lutgen-Sandvik, Riforgiate & Fletcher, 2009). In order to investigate what is enacted to produce positivity in the workplace, this project applied content analysis to four commercial film dated 2004 to 2013. …

Exploring Organizational Culture And Intercultural Communication Practices In A Teaching Hospital, Jaclyn R. Devine

Communication ETDs

As the population in the United States becomes more diverse, communities are increasingly experiencing disparities in health care quality that follow racial and ethnic lines. It has been documented that improving health care providers' intercultural communication is one way to help reduce these health disparities. This study investigated the intercultural communication practices of employees at a large teaching hospital in the Southwest that is actively working to reduce health disparities in its community. Recognizing the influence of organizational culture on communication in a workplace, this study looked not only at communication practices, but also at organizational culture and at diversity …

The Process Of Diagnosis Delivery Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Natasha A. Barnett Jul 2014

The Process Of Diagnosis Delivery Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Natasha A. Barnett

Communication ETDs

The process of diagnosis delivery of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a topic area that has not been given ample attention by academic researchers. Some researchers have focused on delivering bad news (i.e.Buckman, 1992; Gordon, 2008; & Myers, 1983). Yet, no communication researcher has utilized communication theory and/or method to focus on diagnosis delivery of ASD. This study expands this area of focus in academic research using a communication perspective that provides an understanding of the process of diagnosis delivery of ASD at the Center for Developmental Disabilities'(CDD) Early Childhood Evaluation Program (ECEP)--New Mexico's number one center for providing a …

Walk Feminine, Talk Feminine: A Critical Textual Analysis Of Femininities, Performances, And Representations, Reslie Cortes Jul 2014

Walk Feminine, Talk Feminine: A Critical Textual Analysis Of Femininities, Performances, And Representations, Reslie Cortes

Communication ETDs

In this study I examine the multiple ways in which femininity is performed and how those performances intersect with race/ethnicity, class, and sexuality in the anime Bleach and Samurai Champloo. I also interrogate the implications of these performances in relation to hegemonic discourses of Japanese femininity in the U.S. as submissive, deferent, incompetent, and domestic. As I explain in this document many performances of femininity reinforce this Orientalist ideology, however there are also performances that can alter viewers perception of femininity and offer performances of gender identity that do not conform to hegemonic norms. By doing so, anime can shape …

In certain roles, women predominate. In others, women are less represented. Women participating in the local food system provided their insights and expertise on how gender affects their own participation, as well as their perceptions of the gender division of labor within the local food system. Through this exploration, eleven women co-participants of this study found that regardless of the role, there are challenges based on …

Impossible Choices: Balancing Safety And Security In Domestic Violence Representation, Camille Carey, Robert A. Solomon Jul 2014

Impossible Choices: Balancing Safety And Security In Domestic Violence Representation, Camille Carey, Robert A. Solomon

Faculty Scholarship

Domestic violence victims often face the impossible choice between physical safety and financial security. State intervention can offer some protection to victims, but enlisting the criminal justice system through reporting domestic violence or restraining order violations can have drastic financial consequences. Involving the state is likely to lead to sanctions for the abuser which would ultimately deprive the victim of child support, alimony, and other financial support, which may be the totality of the victim’s financial resources. To avoid this result, many victims refuse to enforce court orders intended to maximize their safety. This article examines the context in which …

The Role Of Ses And Asl For Literacy Success In Asl-English Bilinguals, Paul Twitchell Jul 2014

The Role Of Ses And Asl For Literacy Success In Asl-English Bilinguals, Paul Twitchell

Linguistics ETDs

Research on spoken language bilinguals has shown that there is a significant relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and literacy outcomes. The mechanism of SES as a predictor of literacy success has two competing explanations. One assumes a direct impact of SES on literacy through expanded opportunities to read and better maternal mediation of literacy activities; the other assumes an indirect relationship because SES has been shown to influence first language (L1) and second language (L2) spoken language proficiency which impacts literacy development. American Sign Language-English deaf bilingual children exhibit a unique profile because L2 literacy is achieved without prior development …
