Native American Student Experiences And Academic Engagement, Homer Hubbell
Native American Student Experiences And Academic Engagement, Homer Hubbell
Research and Development Supported by El Centro
Background/Specific Aim: Retention and graduation rates at the University of New Mexico (UNM) for male Native American (NA) college students are the lowest of any racial or ethnic group of either gender. At the start of fall 2012, the UNM NA male population was 599; there were 192 NA male freshman students. With attrition as one key marker influencing the decrease in student graduation rates, this cross-sectional study will compare the first-year cohorts with third semester students and beyond to see what differences exist between the groups. The goal is to identify factors with associations between first-year students and students …

Children's Self-Representations, Cultural Developmental Goals, And Social Behavior In Mexican And Euro-American Children, Mary Bancroft
Children's Self-Representations, Cultural Developmental Goals, And Social Behavior In Mexican And Euro-American Children, Mary Bancroft
Psychology ETDs
The current study investigated the development of cultural self-concepts in children and relationships between self-concept, social behavior and maternal parenting and cultural values. Preschool and kindergarten Mexican and Euro-American children (N =56) participated. Children described themselves in response to open-ended questions, mothers completed self-report measures and teachers completed questionnaires regarding childrens social behavior with peers and authority figures. Overall, significant differences were found in children's self-descriptions between the two groups. Mexican children's self-descriptions were balanced between private, relational, and descriptions of significant others whereas Euro-American children's self-descriptions were dominated by private descriptors such as personal attributes, preferences and possessions. Contrary …
Memory Profiles In Schizophrenia: A Neuropsychological Comparison With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, S. Laura Lundy
Memory Profiles In Schizophrenia: A Neuropsychological Comparison With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, S. Laura Lundy
Psychology ETDs
Previous research has demonstrated various neuroanatomical and neuropsychological abnormalities in schizophrenia. Although results vary depending on population characteristics, medication status, imaging methodology, and choice of cognitive assessment measures, overall results suggest decreased cerebral volume within frontal and temporal lobes and in individual structures, particularly hippocampus, within these regions; abnormal connectivity within fronto-temporal networks; and deficits in executive function, working memory, processing speed, and memory, with verbal memory deficits more reliably demonstrated than non-verbal impairment. In particular, left-hemisphere hippocampal-dependent verbal memory impairments have been proposed to be a core feature of schizophrenia, as these deficits are reliably demonstrated in first-episode, medication-na\xefve …
Organizational Factors And Therapist Attitudes In The Prediction Of Mi Adoption., Erin Tooley
Organizational Factors And Therapist Attitudes In The Prediction Of Mi Adoption., Erin Tooley
Psychology ETDs
Dissemination efforts occur within a context. It is important to determine the individual and organizational factors that promote MI adoption. The present study had three goals: 1) to examine the four-factor structure of the Evidence-Based Practice Attitudes Scale (EBPAS) in a sample of substance abuse providers, 2) to examine the organizational and therapist attitude variables that predicted study attrition, and 3) to examine the organizational and therapist attitude factors that predicted MI skill levels at each of the three time points and the factors that predicted skill growth over time. While the factor-structure of the EBPAS was similar in this …
Engaging The Liminal: Indigenous Perceptions Within The Healthcare System, Karen J. Lottis
Engaging The Liminal: Indigenous Perceptions Within The Healthcare System, Karen J. Lottis
Nursing ETDs
It is well documented that there is decreased access and utilization of healthcare services by minority populations. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences with, and views of, the healthcare system among remotely situated First Nations people of coastal British Columbia (BC), to shed light on elements considered crucial to healthcare delivery. The study was conducted as a critical ethnography with an underlying framework of phenomenology and critical social theory. Multiple sources of data collection included private interviews, community observations, conversations, celebratory gatherings, participant-observer field notes, and the art and music of the people involved. Multiphase data management …
Sophie D. Aberle And The United Pueblos Agency, 1935-1944, Kathlene Ferris
Sophie D. Aberle And The United Pueblos Agency, 1935-1944, Kathlene Ferris
History ETDs
This thesis examines Aberle's administration in the coincided with the New Deal era and John Collier's administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Aberle was a medical researcher and applied anthropologist who brought several years of field experience among the Pueblos to the UPA. Some opposition arose over her appointment, in part because she was a woman. More important, many Pueblos opposed the consolidation of several Pueblo agencies into one large agency, the United Pueblos Agency. The new agency encompassed the nineteen New Mexico pueblos and three small Navajo reservations. Some resistance to Aberle and the consolidated agency lasted throughout …
Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi
Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi
Sociology ETDs
The patterns of socio/political transformation that Iran went through in the 20th century generated episodes of great ideological divergence within Irans shi'ite establishment. The current study seeks to shed light on an instance of textual exchange that took place in the earlier part of the century — in 1943 — but became the bedrock for subsequent discursive conflicts within shi'ism notably during and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Adopting the format of a dialogue and operating within the milieu of a shi'ite outlook, the authors of this exchange, Hakamizadeh and Khomeini, touched upon several social and political topics such as …
Trait Emotional Intelligence (Ei) And Job Satisfaction: A Quantitative Analysis Of Faculty That Teach Online, Mary Cooley
Trait Emotional Intelligence (Ei) And Job Satisfaction: A Quantitative Analysis Of Faculty That Teach Online, Mary Cooley
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
While the construct of emotional intelligence (EI), has been researched and discussed for nearly 25 years, most research of this variable has been done within traditional learning and workplace environments, namely face-to-face settings (Rudestam & Schoenholtz-Read, 2009), not the online learning environment, where, over the last ten plus years, education has largely been focused (Allen & Seaman, 2013). Mortiboys (2012), along with Powell and Kusuma-Powell (2010), found that successful college faculty tend to possess high levels of trait EI in traditional or face-to-face classroom settings, and yet, to date, very few similar studies have been conducted with faculty teaching in …
Modeling Early-Career Teacher Retention In New Mexico Using Logistic Regression, Rachel Mercer-Smith
Modeling Early-Career Teacher Retention In New Mexico Using Logistic Regression, Rachel Mercer-Smith
Public Administration ETDs
Teachers are the single-greatest predictor of student achievement, and teacher effectiveness tends to improve with experience. Yet, roughly half of all new teachers leave the profession within five years of beginning their careers, leading to school instability, affecting student achievement, and wasting the public investment made in their professional development. This student examined a cohort of New Mexico public school teachers who began their careers in 2008 and analyzed the individual, school, and community factors that predicted their retention within the states teacher workforce in 2013 using logistic regression analysis. The study found that holding an alternative license consistently makes …
Spatial Discrimination In The Virtual Morris Water Task: The Influence Of View Similarity, Daniel Barto
Spatial Discrimination In The Virtual Morris Water Task: The Influence Of View Similarity, Daniel Barto
Psychology ETDs
Previous research in the Morris Water Task (MWT) and Virtual Morris Water Task (VMWT) examined how distal cues, or cues placed outside the pool, enabled an organism to orient themselves to navigate towards the hidden platform (Kolb & Whishaw, 2009). Recently Cheng and colleagues (2008) have created a model that predicts navigational performance based upon the similarity of views of the distal cues encountered within an environment. This model has successfully predicted performance for rats and simulated agents within a rectangular environment. The present study evaluates the view based similarity model with human subjects in the context of the VMWT. …
Can Irrelevant Onsets Capture Attention? Searching For A Unified Model Of Attention Capture, Nicholas Gaspelin
Can Irrelevant Onsets Capture Attention? Searching For A Unified Model Of Attention Capture, Nicholas Gaspelin
Psychology ETDs
Can salient stimuli, such as abrupt onsets, capture attention? Some researchers consistently find that they do, regardless of the observers current goals, whereas others consistently find the opposite. The present research begins with the observation that different theoretical camps consistently rely on different types of visual search: letter vs. color. In the present pre-cuing experiments, I directly compared these two approaches using identical stimulus displays, changing only the search dimension. The results were striking: letter search produced large cue validity effects, whereas color search produced negligible effects. Later experiments demonstrated a key role of search difficulty. I tested several candidate …
Normative Beliefs About Drinking And Alcohol Use Among Native American And Non-Hispanic White College Students, Kylee Hagler
Normative Beliefs About Drinking And Alcohol Use Among Native American And Non-Hispanic White College Students, Kylee Hagler
Psychology ETDs
Excessive alcohol consumption among college students has been linked to many negative consequences (e.g. Chou et al., 2006). Normative beliefs about alcohol use have been associated with college alcohol use such that students who estimate higher drinking among peers and students who perceive higher approval for drinking from peers tend to drink more (e.g. Neighbors, Lee, Lewis, Fossos, & Larimer, 2007). However, many studies examining normative beliefs have been conducted with only non-Hispanic White (NHW) college students. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between normative beliefs about drinking and four alcohol variables in a sample …
The Psychology Of The Supreme Court: Modeling Judicial Semantics From Written Opinions, Anne Lippert
The Psychology Of The Supreme Court: Modeling Judicial Semantics From Written Opinions, Anne Lippert
Psychology ETDs
The construction of knowledge networks from text is a novel way to study the cognitive organization of domain specific content. This dissertation evaluated the application of knowledge networks to legal text. Text analysis methods were used to transform text from 8,014 Supreme Court opinions into matrix data suitable for the construction of knowledge networks known as SCOD networks (Supreme Court Opinion Derived networks). Four specific hypotheses were then tested to better understand the meaningfulness and validity of SCOD networks. The first hypothesis considered differences between SCOD networks and random networks. The remaining hypotheses considered the ability of SCOD networks to …
Measuring Disability In Chronic Pain: Factor Structure And Revision Of The Sickness Impact Profile, Mindy Mcentee
Measuring Disability In Chronic Pain: Factor Structure And Revision Of The Sickness Impact Profile, Mindy Mcentee
Psychology ETDs
Chronic pain is a complex condition that can adversely impact all areas of one's life. Despite a wealth of treatment options, complete pain relief is rare. Consequently, treatment goals often aim to improve functioning in physical, psychological, and social domains. Assessments play an important role in planning treatment and monitoring changes in functioning, but must balance comprehensiveness with patient burden. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP; Bergner, Bobbitt, Carter, & Gilson, 1981) is a well-established general health measure that provides comprehensive clinical information across multiple domains, but remains limited due to its substantial length and questionable factor structure. While several short-form …
Consequences And Protective Factors For Sexual Victimization Among Ethnically Diverse Women: An Online Study, Rosa Muñoz
Consequences And Protective Factors For Sexual Victimization Among Ethnically Diverse Women: An Online Study, Rosa Muñoz
Psychology ETDs
This study examined the relationships among ethnicity, childhood abuse, adult sexual victimization, negative outcomes of victimization, and factors that protect women against negative outcomes after experiencing these events. Three hundred and fifty four women (n = 354) from New Mexico completed an online survey asking them about their victimization history, ethnic identity, religious beliefs, and perceptions of their physical and mental health. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships among variables. Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women did not report differential negative outcomes subsequent to trauma history and did not employ differential coping strategies in response to such a …
Socioeconomic Status And Cognitive Outcomes: Mediating Role Of The Home Environment, Jennifer Gwendolyn Benson
Socioeconomic Status And Cognitive Outcomes: Mediating Role Of The Home Environment, Jennifer Gwendolyn Benson
Psychology ETDs
Low socioeconomic status (SES) in early childhood is associated with increased risk for deficits in cognitive development. Early home environment quality has been shown to mediate between SES and cognition in toddlers from low-income families. This study explored the mediation of home environment quality between SES and cognition in socioeconomically diverse toddlers. 26 families completed a HOME interview (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment). Child cognitive ability was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. The Monte Carlo method for testing indirect effects was used to test for mediation of HOME standardized total scores between SES and developmental …
How Do The Public's Environmental Attitudes Affect Recreation Demand For National Forests And Grassland In The Southwest?, Alejandro Prera
How Do The Public's Environmental Attitudes Affect Recreation Demand For National Forests And Grassland In The Southwest?, Alejandro Prera
Economics ETDs
This dissertation studies the relationship between environmental attitudes and National Forest management in the Southwest, specifically the effect that attitudes have on changes to recreation fees. Although there is research on the effect of environmental attitudes on willingness-to-pay for environmental goods (e.g., Spash 2000; Spash 2006; Ojea and Loureiro 2007), little work has been done on analyzing the effect that environmental attitudes have on changes to recreation fees. I help address this gap by investigating the effects that public land values, a measure of environmental attitudes, have on changes to recreation fees at National Forests using primary data from a …
The Eat-16: Validation Of A Shortened Form Of The Eating Attitudes Test, Elizabeth Mclaughlin
The Eat-16: Validation Of A Shortened Form Of The Eating Attitudes Test, Elizabeth Mclaughlin
Psychology ETDs
Eating disorders (EDs) are common in certain nonclinical groups, such as college students. Given known health risks and other sequelae of EDs, and difficulties in assessing them, psychometrically sound measures are needed. This study assessed the validity of the EAT-16, a shortened form of the EAT-26. The EAT-16 had been previously proposed and tested as a screening measure for EDs. The measure was tested in the current study in a sample of Caucasian and Hispanic undergraduate females. In a confirmatory factor analysis, the EAT-16 four-factor structure was replicated in the Caucasian and Hispanic groups, and support for metric invariance was …
Coping Strategies Mediate The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Health, Jennifer Bernard
Coping Strategies Mediate The Relationship Between Alexithymia And Health, Jennifer Bernard
Psychology ETDs
Alexithymia, a construct of impaired emotion processing, has been shown to negatively impact mental health and is associated with higher physical symptom reporting. This study examined the relationship between alexithymia, coping, and health in a large ethnically diverse sample of undergraduate university students (N = 605; 65% female; 45% Hispanic). Exploratory factor analyses were conducted to create a latent measurement model for emotional approach, active coping and avoidant coping. Structural equation modeling was used to test a hypothesized structural model for coping mediating the effects of alexithymia on mental and physical health. Results indicated the association between alexithymia and negative …
White Matter Integrity And Alcohol Use Disorders, Mollie Monnig
White Matter Integrity And Alcohol Use Disorders, Mollie Monnig
Psychology ETDs
Injury to the brains white matter is a signature injury of alcohol use disorders (AUD), yet research on its causes and correlates has yielded mixed findings. This study used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test associations between clinical and demographic factors and variability in white matter integrity in heavy drinkers (mean age = 30.86 ± 9.08 years; 30% female; 62% treatment-na\xefve). Magnetic resonance imaging scans, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), were collected from 324 individuals who reported recent heavy drinking (at least 5 binge-drinking episodes in the past 30 days, or > 14 standard drinks/week for women and > 21 standard drinks/week …
Simulation Of Social Networks To Maximize The Prevention And Treatment Of Alcohol Use Disorders, Kevin Hallgren
Simulation Of Social Networks To Maximize The Prevention And Treatment Of Alcohol Use Disorders, Kevin Hallgren
Psychology ETDs
Introduction: Previous studies have found associations between alcohol use and having heavy-drinking social networks. This association is thought to be caused by (1) social influence, where ones social network influences his or her drinking, and (2) social selection, where an individual forms relationships with individuals who drink at similar levels. These processes are reciprocal and, when acting simultaneously, create a feedback loop with non-linear dynamics. Computer simulations have allowed complex systems to be modeled in many scientific fields; however, this method has not yet been used to study the dynamic associations between social networks and alcohol use. Method: The present …
Stigmatization And The Re-Articulation Of Eugenic Ideology: A Study Of Coded Racism In Family Planning Policy From The 1920s To The 1990s, Michael Muhammad
Stigmatization And The Re-Articulation Of Eugenic Ideology: A Study Of Coded Racism In Family Planning Policy From The 1920s To The 1990s, Michael Muhammad
Sociology ETDs
This study investigates the use of coded racism in the evolution of fertility control policies from the 1920s to the 1990s. I propose a theory of welfare eugenics that explains stigmatization of the fertility of poor, racial and ethnic minorities through a re-articulation of overtly racist language in terms of cultural symbols, stereotypes, and labels referred to as coded racism. I conduct a discourse analysis of scientific papers presented at the Third International Congress of Eugenics in 1932, and witness testimony from congressional hearings held in the 1920s, 1965 — 1966, and 1995 — 1996 for evidence of eugenic ideology …
Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera
Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation brings to light a legacy of Mexican American spatial resilience that troubles Anglo-centric constructions of the Southwest, its history, and cultural formation as a byproduct of westward expansionism. This project argues that early Mexican American writers offer an alternative paradigm of transnationalism for understanding the literature, culture, and geography of the U.S. Southwest as it has been imagined in Anglo American cultural production about the region. For early Mexican American writers, the Southwest was not a quaint literary region but a space of historic transnational zones of contact, commerce, and cultural geography where they maintained degrees of agency. …

An Action Research Case Study: A Sociocultural Perspective On Native American Students Learning Mathematics In A Public Elementary School Classroom, Lisa M. Tsuchiya
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This dissertation is a qualitative study utilizing action research methods to develop a case study on the experience of urban public elementary school Native American students in collaborative mathematics activities. Data was collected with observations, mathematics assessments, and interviews to study how public school Native first graders experience collaborative mathematics activities when culturally modified with Indigenous ways of knowing and being? A major challenge in analyzing this work was finding a theoretical framework that could explain the experience of Native students in a multicultural public school. Sociocultural theory was selected because it operationalizes the key features of the study: Indigenous …

Mobilizing The Minority Vote: A Comparison Of Mobilization Methods And Examination Of Personal Characteristics Influencing Voter Turnout Among Minorities, Lisa Bryant
Political Science ETDs
This study explores the challenges of getting unlikely voters to the polls and mobilizing new citizens for participation in politics, focusing on racial and ethnic minorities, as well as naturalized citizens. Findings suggest that mobilization may not be a one-size-fits-all approach, as many campaigns assume, but rather that when engaging low-propensity voters, especially those who are unfamiliar with American political parties or the election process, additional factors such as co-ethnic contact and community may play a role. The findings are based on four field experiments conducted during the 2010 general election in four major urban areas in California. The field …
Animal People, Sabrina Golmassian
Animal People, Sabrina Golmassian
English Language and Literature ETDs
Billions of animals are killed every year based on this ethical premise: Animals are lower than humans on some abstract moral scale, and they can therefore be considered property. However, a growing percentage of compassionate and educated animal lovers and advocates reject that premise. Its now possible to live comfortably and happily without subjecting animals to fear, pain, and stress for non-essential products. Whether it be food, clothing, scientific experiment, or entertainment, alternatives now exist to take their place. A broad range of investigative journalism and scholarship have exposed the detrimental effects of the use of animals for industry. An …
