Using An Established Telehealth Model To Train Urban Primary Care Providers On Hypertension Management, Christopher Masi, Tamara Hamlish, Andrew Davis, Kristine Bordenave, Stephen Brown, Brenda Perea, Glen Aduana, Marcus Wolfe, George Bakris, Daniel Johnson
Project ECHO Bibliography
The objective of this study was to determine whether a videoconference-based telehealth network can increase hypertension management knowledge and self-assessed competency among primary care providers (PCPs) working in urban Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). We created a telehealth network among 6 urban FQHCs and our institution to support a 12-session educational program designed to teach state-of-the-art hypertension management. Each 1-hour session included a brief lecture by a university-based hypertension specialist, case presentations by PCPs, and interactive discussions among the specialist and PCPs. Twelve PCPs (9 intervention and 3 controls) were surveyed at baseline and immediately following the curriculum. The mean …

New Mexico Youth Risk & Resiliency Survey: Middle School Survey Results 2011, D Green, L Penaloza, C Fitzgerald
Reports & Documents
Results of the 2011 New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (YRRS) reveal few recent changes in the rates of health risk behaviors among the state’s public middle school students. While the rates of many behaviors associated with alcohol use have decreased among high school students in recent years, statistically significant changes were not seen among middle school students. The prevalence of current drinking, binge drinking, riding in a car with a drinking driver, and cocaine use appeared lower in 2011 than 2009, but these differences were not statistically significant. At the same time, New Mexico has seen statistically significant …

Reports & Documents
Results of the 2011 New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (YRRS), a collaborative project of the New Mexico Departments of Health and Public Education, reveal a decrease in the rates of several important health risk behaviors among the state’s public high school students. The prevalence of suicide attempts, cigarette smoking, binge drinking, and physical fighting have decreased significantly in recent years. At the same time, New Mexico has seen an upward trend in the rate of students who are obese. Caring and supportive relationships between high school students and their parents or guardians, teachers, peers, and adults in their …
R2p= Mdgs: Implementing The Responsibility To Protect Through The Millennium Development Goals, Jennifer Moore
R2p= Mdgs: Implementing The Responsibility To Protect Through The Millennium Development Goals, Jennifer Moore
Faculty Scholarship
This essay is a peaceful call to arms based on the understanding that an essential way to fight the most egregious and widespread human rights abuses is through a broad-spectrum approach to human security grounded in the Millennium Development Goals and a new, non-military, understanding of humanitarian intervention. The responsibility to protect, often cited as a justification for military force to stop genocide, crimes against humanity, and other widespread human rights abuses, is better seen as a commitment by all nations to strengthen their own social welfare and human rights systems, and for those nations with more resources to assist …

Salmon People In An Era Of Depleting Salmon: The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community’S Climate Adaptation Action Plan As A Manifestation Of Tribal Sovereignty, Kelly Davis
Tribal Law Journal
Climate change presents novel challenges to indigenous peoples striving to maintain their place-based subsistence cultures. Climate change is altering physical environments, tribes are experiencing detrimental impacts, and adaptation is necessary to preserve indigenous lifestyles. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, a Coast Salish tribe in northwestern Washington State, has taken the initiative in tribal climate change adaptation efforts.
In 2010, the Swinomish Office of Planning and Community Development issued a thorough Climate Adaptation Action Plan, which delineates strategies the vulnerable coastal, salmon-dependent tribe must take. Resilient social systems, like American Indian tribes, are capable of anticipating and planning for the future. …

Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski
Testing Hypotheses Of The Demographic Transition In San Borja, Bolivia, Kristin Snopkowski
Anthropology ETDs
Understanding the demographic transition, a trend in which fertility drops after a period of population growth, has been an important area of anthropological and demographic research. This dissertation seeks to understand fertility change by testing five models that have been presented in the literature. The predictions that are unique to each hypothesis are tested in San Borja, Bolivia, a community currently undergoing a fertility transition. Low modern fertility seems counter-intuitive given the increase of individual wealth, but there have not been sufficient tests to lead to an understanding of why this occurs. Informational hypotheses explain fertility transition as a change …
Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig
Infectious Disease And The Worldwide Distribution Of Iq, Christopher Guiles Eppig
Biology ETDs
We show that infectious disease is a major contributor to the worldwide distribution of human cognitive ability, as measured by psychometric IQ. In areas where infectious disease is high, average human intelligence tends to be lower, and in areas where infectious disease is low, average human intelligence tends to be higher. In separate studies, we tested this across world nations (chapter 2) and across states of the USA (chapter 3). In efforts to disseminate our research to wider audiences, I reviewed the findings contained in chapters 2 and 3 using language that is accessible to non-biologists (chapter 4). Although it …

The Structure Of Energy Production And Redistribution Among Tsimane' Forager-Horticulturalists, Paul L. Hooper
The Structure Of Energy Production And Redistribution Among Tsimane' Forager-Horticulturalists, Paul L. Hooper
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation constitutes an integrated analysis of the Tsimane' economic subsistence system. Its analyses are guided by a body of evolutionary theory which posits that life history traits, the structure of social relationships, and nature of economic production co-evolve in patterned and predictable ways. This theory specifically suggests that, for humans, the returns to embodied capital development and declines in reproductive efficiency late in life interact to produce: prolonged development, extended lifespan, menopause, and a predominantly downward three-generational system of energetic provisioning. The current analyses of Tsimane' work effort, production, and transfers are consistent with this theory in the following …

Stream Water Survey Along The Annapurna Circuit, Nepal, Rhona Scott
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
This paper focuses on stream water testing that took place on the Marshyangdi River, Jharsang Khola and the Kali Gandaki River that are located along the Annapurna Circuit Trek within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Sampling was undertaken from May 16, 2011 to May 28, 2011. A total of 7 samples were taken from the Marshyangdi River, 1 sample from a branch of the Marshyangdi River ( Jharsang Khola), and 5 from the Kali Gandaki River at various accessible points along the trek. An effort was made to sample both upstream and downstream of a village to assess any difference between …

Assembling The Poor People's Campaign (1968) Queer Activism And Economic Justice, Christina Juhász-Wood
Assembling The Poor People's Campaign (1968) Queer Activism And Economic Justice, Christina Juhász-Wood
American Studies ETDs
This thesis attempts to bring the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) of 1968 into contemporary discussions about queer scholarship and activism. The PPC assembled a diverse racial and ethnic constituency in an unprecedented way to produce a massive, national political campaign to end poverty. This complex assemblage was largely indecipherable to the press and many historians, which has contributed to the view that the campaign was a failure, particularly in relation to the civil rights movement . I describe how the mainstream gay rights movement appropriates the civil rights movement as normative to seek forms of national inclusion. I argue that …
Pattern Of Multivitamin Use : Prevalence And Predictors Among Pregnenat Women In New Mexico, Sizhu Liu
Pattern Of Multivitamin Use : Prevalence And Predictors Among Pregnenat Women In New Mexico, Sizhu Liu
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Background: Prenatal vitamin use is recommended as a necessary supplement prior to conception and throughout pregnancy. Multivitamin use in early pregnancy can significantly reduce risks for birth defects: cardiovascular defects, limb defect, urinary tract abnormalities, orofacial clefts and neural tube defects (NTDs). Sixty-nine to seventy-eight percent of women take vitamins after pregnancy recognition, while only 23-35% of women in the U.S. start to use vitamins before pregnancy recognition. Rates of NTDs by ethnicity demonstrate that Hispanics have the highest prevalence (4.2 per 10,000 births) than Non-Hispanics. (Non-Hispanic Black or African American: 3.2 per 10,000 births; Non-Hispanic Whites: 2.6 per 10,000 …
Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer
Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer
Geography ETDs
This research used local produce as a way to investigate the construction and meaning of the local food environment by food retailers and consumers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The research consisted of three components. First, the observed local food environment was defined through store surveys that were conducted in 193 food retail outlets and farmers markets in the Albuquerque study area. These surveys were performed in order to collect information, through signage and other advertising materials, about how retailers defined 'local' produce. The subsequent qualitative text analysis on these materials allowed for several themes to emerge that characterized the observed …
The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton
The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton
History ETDs
Over the past century, the New Mexican chile pepper transformed from a principally local and regional crop grown by many, small scale growers into an industrial commodity on a global market. With this transformation, the ecology of the chile pepper has shifted and expanded. The actors in this ecology- the growers, the research scientists, the manufacturers of equipment, chemicals, and seeds, government legislatures, the consumers, and even the genome of the chile itself- became increasingly global with little or no ties to the local watersheds, ecosystems, and communities within the state. Driving this ecological expansion has been a close public-private …
Factors Associated With Obesity Treatment Adherence In Mexican-American Women, Julia Austin
Factors Associated With Obesity Treatment Adherence In Mexican-American Women, Julia Austin
Psychology ETDs
The current study examined environmental and socio-cultural factors postulated to predict adherence to a standard weight management program in Mexican-American women. In addition, the study gathered preliminary data on the effectiveness of the program with the study sample. One-hundred overweight or obese Mexican-American women in the Albuquerque area completed a pre-treatment intake and were enrolled in the group-based treatment. Of the 100 women who enrolled, 82 attended at least one treatment session. In terms of the predictors of treatment adherence, income was found to positively predict attendance in multivariate analyses. In addition, neighborhood satisfaction positively predicted reported walking goals completed, …
