Snap-Ed New Mexico Social Marketing Campaign Phase 1 Focus Groups Report, Sally M. Davis, Glenda Canaca, Jose Canaca, Patty Keane, Pamela Monaghan-Geernaert, Mary Hanrahan
Formative Research
The purpose of the SNAP-Ed New Mexico Social Marketing Campaign is to develop and evaluate culturally appropriate nutrition education intervention messages in Spanish for parents and care-givers of preschool age children, parents of elementary school-age children, and children ages 8-10 years. In collaboration with HSD, the University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center (PRC) set out to develop and test messages to effectively motivate SNAP participants who do not currently meet U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommendations for consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grains and low-fat dairy to increase their intake of these foods. This is a three phase project. Phase one of …

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plays an essential role in the nutrition status of low-income families in the United States. Although it is not mandatory to provide nutrition education to SNAP recipients, USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) highly encourages each state’s SNAP agency to educate SNAP participants (SNAP-Ed). The purpose of SNAP-Ed is to help SNAP eligible individuals to make healthy food choices consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, that fit within their limited budget. In New Mexico, SNAP and SNAP-Ed are administered by the State of New …
Functions Of Autophagy In Lipid Homeostasis And Survival In Androgen-Dependent Prostate Cancer Cells, Ramesh Raj Kaini
Functions Of Autophagy In Lipid Homeostasis And Survival In Androgen-Dependent Prostate Cancer Cells, Ramesh Raj Kaini
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Androgen deprivation therapy, one of the standard treatments for prostate cancer, induces apoptosis as well as autophagy in androgen-responsive PCa cells. As modulation of autophagy is a new paradigm for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of various cancer therapies, we sought to determine the functions of autophagy during androgen deprivation. In this study, we confirmed that androgen removal or inhibition induces autophagy in two different hormone sensitive prostate cancer cells. Androgen deprivation also caused depletion of lipid droplets which was abrogated on inhibition of autophagy by pharmacological means (3-methyladenine, bafilomycin A1) or using a genetic approach (Atg5 siRNA). In addition, colocalization …
Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo
Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Defining underlying molecular mechanisms exploited by cancer cells in their development and progression provides a necessary foundation for experimental therapeutics. The androgen receptor (AR) is a known therapeutic target for prostate cancer (CaP) given its well-established role in both the development and progression of CaP. The AR is a ligand activated transcription factor that regulates the expression of many genes involved in proliferation and differentiation. Identifying agents that down-regulate AR expression may elucidate mechanism(s) for selectively targeting the AR. Two related agents of the natural products curcumin and vitamin E, curcumin analog 27 (ca27) and alpha-tocopheryl quinone (TQ), respectively were …

Latino/Hispanic Young Men And Health Beliefs, Acculturation, And Emerging Adulthood: An Exploratory Study, Peter Andrew Guarnero
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The purpose of the study was to identify factors that influenced health promotion behaviors in Latino/Hispanic mens health, including their experiences and health concerns. Acculturation, emerging adulthood and health were the three key ecological variables used in the study. The sample consisted of 16 Latino/Hispanic young men who were students at a Hispanic-serving university in the Southwestern United States. The study consisted of two data collection sessions. Session one consisted of a semi-structured individual interview and completion of a demographic questionnaire, two acculturation scales, a health promoting lifestyle scale, and visual analog scales for overall health perceptions and quality of …
Ethanol Exposure Impairs Glutamatergic Synaptic Transmission And Plasticity In The Ca1 Hippocampal Region During The Third Trimester-Equivalent Of Human Pregnancy: Implications For Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Michael P. Puglia
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder results from developmental exposure to ethanol. Although many organ systems are targeted by this teratogen, the central nervous system is exquisitely sensitive. Children with this disease often present with behavioral disorders as well as impairments in learning and memory. Ethanol exposure affects developmental processes throughout pregnancy; however, the third trimester-equivalent has demonstrated heightened sensitivity. Although the mechanism of action(s) of ethanol remains unknown, studies suggest that impairments in glutamatergic signaling and synaptic plasticity during the third trimester-equivalent period of development lead to alterations in synaptic formation and refinement. However, little is known about the developmental effects …
Florentine Palaces, Costly Signaling, And Lineage Survival, Michael K. Church
Florentine Palaces, Costly Signaling, And Lineage Survival, Michael K. Church
Anthropology ETDs
My dissertation evaluated whether the palaces built in Florence, Italy during the Renaissance are a form of costly signaling. Costly signaling theory was developed to explain why organisms have attributes and behaviors that appear to defy basic Darwinian logic by having costs that are not offset by obvious benefits. The theory proposes that such attributes and behaviors persist because they are reliable signals of information about the signalers. Signal audiences use the information content of signals to rank signalers and to modify their interactions with signalers in ways that benefit signalers. These interactions can involve mate choice, predation avoidance, status …

The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
The Effects Of Temperature Forcing On Dengue Dynamics Via The Extrinsic Incubation Period, Paula Danielle Weber
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Dengue fever is a mosquito-transmitted disease that is endemic in many parts of the tropical world and affects a significant proportion of the human population. Temperature is known to influence aspects of the dengue transmission cycle, which has consequences for disease dynamics. Previous work has explored the effects of temperature on the mortality rate of the mosquito and the resulting population change. However, there is substantial evidence that the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of the pathogen within the vector host, Aedes aegypti, is also temperature dependent. This dependence has not been thoroughly researched. We present a single serotype compartmental model …
Linking Precipitation And C3 - C4 Plant Production To Resource Dynamics In Higher Trophic Level Consumers: Insect Data (2005-2006), Robin Warne
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
In many ecosystems, seasonal shifts in temperature and precipitation induce pulses of primary productivity that vary in phenology, abundance and nutritional quality. Variation in these resource pulses could strongly influence community composition and ecosystem function, because these pervasive bottom-up forces play a primary role in determining the biomass, life cycles and interactions of organisms across trophic levels. The focus of this research is to understand how consumers across trophic levels alter resource use and assimilation over seasonal and inter-annual timescales in response to climatically driven changes in pulses of primary productivity. We measured the carbon isotope ratios (d13C) of plant, …

Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning
Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning
Nursing ETDs
Older adults continue to live longer, and their desire is to not only live longer but to remain as independent as possible. Therefore, older adults strive to live more productive lives, not to just continue to exist. By living a healthy life, older adults are empowered to take control, not only of their health but of other important life decisions. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe rural older adults behaviors toward healthy lifestyles. The theoretical framework for the study was Pender's health promotion model, which addressed factors that enhance health-promoting behavior, leading to improved health and …

The Influence Of Women's Status On Economic Development: A Pooled Time Series Cross-Sectional Analysis Of 126 Countries, 1980-2005, Lynzie Rowland
Sociology ETDs
The role of women in development has generated countless studies devoted to illuminating distinct aspects of womens lives and experiences. Several theories, developmentalism and social feminism, were created as a response to modernization theory's inattention to the roles of women in the process of development. Developmentalism has focused on the influence of the improved status of women on economic development. This study examines this association from the developmentalist perspective for 126 countries every five years between 1980 and 2005. Additionally, this paper investigates the linking mechanisms of women's status to economic development. Secondary data acquired from the World Bank website …
