Responsive Feeding Recommendations: Harmonizing Integration Into Dietary Guidelines For Infants And Young Children, Rafael Pérez-Escamilla, Elizabeth Yakes Jimenez, Kathryn G. Dewey

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Responsive feeding (RF) involves reciprocal nurturing feeding practices between the caregiver and the child that encourage the child to develop preferences for healthy foods and beverages and to eat autonomously. In this commentary, we summarize RF-related findings from a recent US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) consensus study report examining consistency in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) recommendations in guidelines from high-income countries, and we discuss implications for future IYCF guidelines. Although existing guidelines included generally consistent messages about several RF behaviors, such as the importance of encouraging self-feeding and self-regulation in infants and toddlers, …

Fatigue Predicts Future Reduced Social Participation, Not Reduced Physical Function Or Quality Of Life In People With Systemic Sclerosis, Susan L. Murphy, Daniel Whibley, Anna L. Kratz, Janet L L. Poole, Dinesh Khanna Jun 2021

Fatigue Predicts Future Reduced Social Participation, Not Reduced Physical Function Or Quality Of Life In People With Systemic Sclerosis, Susan L. Murphy, Daniel Whibley, Anna L. Kratz, Janet L L. Poole, Dinesh Khanna

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: Although fatigue is one of the most problematic symptoms for people with systemic sclerosis, little is known about how fatigue impacts daily life over time. Such information is important when developing fatigue management interventions. This study was conducted to examine 1) if fatigue severity predicted outcomes of worse functioning (social participation, physical function), and quality of life and 2) if level of self-efficacy moderated significant relationships between fatigue and these outcomes.

METHODS: Data were utilized from a clinical trial in which an online self-management intervention was tested (N = 267). Fatigue, social participation, and physical function were assessed by …

Self-Administered Cognitive Screening To Monitor For Cognitive Side Effects From Outpatient Electroconvulsive Therapy, Peter Holguin, Christopher Abbott

Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium

Abstract: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a rapid and effective treatment for multiple types of mental illness including major depressive disorder, bipolar depression, and catatonia. ECT can result in multiple cognitive side effects including post-ECT delirium as well as anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Administering formal cognitive screening at baseline, during, and after completion of ECT could be an effective means of monitoring for cognitive side effects from ECT. Conducting cognitive screening in an outpatient ECT service poses multiple challenges including time, limited staff, and availability of trained staff to administer cognitive screening. After reviewing multiple cognitive screens, the Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination …

Iina Dziil Be’At’Iin (On The Path Of A Strong Life): Dine (Navajo) Perceptions Of Self-Care And Social Support With Diabetes Management, Chenoa Bah Stilwell-Jensen

Communication ETDs

ABSTRACT

Managing diabetes requires a detailed self-care regimen of physical activity, eating well, testing glucose, healthy weight maintenance, and positive emotional outlook in order to maintain health outcomes. Education, clear communication, and sufficient support are needed to address challenging aspects of daily self-care at the onset of diagnosis and throughout the management of the illness. However, many people diagnosed with diabetes are unable to successfully manage their condition. Native Americans are twice as likely to have diabetes than Whites. Although diabetes-related kidney failure and other negative health effects remain a concern among Native Americans, rates of kidney failure in this …

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky May 2021

Effects Of Environmental Change On Ancestral Pueblo Fishing In The Middle Rio Grande, Jonathan William Dombrosky

Anthropology ETDs

It has long been assumed that fishes were unimportant in the diet of past Pueblo people in the U.S. Southwest. Yet, small numbers of fish remains are consistently recovered from Late pre-Hispanic/Early Historic archaeological sites in the Middle Rio Grande of New Mexico. The end of drought conditions may have impacted food choice and fishing decisions during this time. I use behavioral ecology to understand how fishing could have been an optimal food-getting strategy for Ancestral Pueblo farmers. Stable isotope analysis offers a way to account for environmental change. I provide a refined 13C Suess correction model to support …

Implications Of Positive Anti-Gliadin Antibody With Negative Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody Titers While Consuming Gluten, Justin Hessinger, Pankaj Vohra

2021 Pediatric Research Forum Session

Background

Celiac disease is common and affects approximately 0.7 to 1% of the population. Due to its protean manifestations, celiac serology is often requested for chronic non-febrile ailments for which there is no obvious cause.

Tricore Laboratories routinely performs total serum IgA levels, anti-deamidated gliadin IgA antibody and tissue transglutaminase IgA antibody (tTG) levels when a celiac serology is requested.

Past studies have shown that tTG is very sensitive and specific ‘screening’ test for the diagnosis of celiac disease. Additionally, the same studies show that positive anti-gliadin antibody in the presence of negative tTG antibody levels suggests the former to …

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States and New Mexico. Excess weight early in life greatly increases the risk of severe health complications in adulthood. The Healthy and Fit Children’s Clinic (H&FCC) at Carrie Tingley Hospital treats children ages 2-17 years old who have been referred by their primary pediatrician for elevated BMI (>85th percentile). The goal of this clinic is to partner with families to lower their child’s weight with lifestyle changes before the need for lifelong medication. Childhood obesity is influenced by a number of social determinants of health, but one that permeates …

Understanding The Prevalence Of Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, And Resilience In Primary Care, Christina M. O'Connell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Compassion fatigue (CF), its components of burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS), and compassion satisfaction (CS) affect healthcare providers and staff and can dramatically influence patient care and access to primary care services. Resilience is a tool which serves as a protective factor that can mitigate CF and enhance CS. There is a gap in research regarding the relationship between compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and resilience among primary care providers and frontline staff. Additionally, the current COVID-19 pandemic has revealed healthcare’s deficits related to staff and provider burnout, a myriad of workforce safety issues, disparities in care, and a …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

In order to achieve the global elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem, close surveillance of progress in public health and clinical activities and outcomes across the three pillars of vaccination, screening and treatment will be required. Surveillance should ideally occur within an integrated system that is planned, funded, and regularly evaluated to ensure it is providing timely, accurate and relevant feedback for action. In this paper, we conceptualise the main public health surveillance objectives as process and outcome measures in each of the three pillars. Process measures include coverage/participation measures for vaccination, screening and treatment alongside the …

Project ECHO Bibliography

Disparities in sleep health are important but underrecognized contributors to health disparities. Understanding the factors contributing to sleep heath disparities and developing effective interventions are critical to improving all aspects of heath. Sleep heath disparities are impacted by socioeconomic status, racism, discrimination, neighborhood segregation, geography, social patterns, and access to health care as well as by cultural beliefs, necessitating a cultural appropriateness component in any intervention devised for reducing sleep health disparities. Pediatric sleep disparities require innovative and urgent intervention to establish a foundation of lifelong healthy sleep. Tapping the vast potential of technology in improving sleep health access may …

Perceived Critical Success Factors For Native American And Non-Native American Pre-Licensure Nursing Students In Northern New Mexico, Karen E. Nielsen Feb 2021

Perceived Critical Success Factors For Native American And Non-Native American Pre-Licensure Nursing Students In Northern New Mexico, Karen E. Nielsen

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Considering the consistent healthcare system load demands, nursing shortages persist, especially in remote areas of the United States. It is vital that students interested in attending nursing school and working in their home communities have expanded nursing program access and supports in order to supply the necessary nursing workforce in remote areas. Lack of diversity in the nursing profession weakens healthcare delivery. Native Americans are underrepresented as nursing students and employed nurses. Measures to provide a more diverse workforce should concentrate on recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority nursing students. Limited research is available surrounding Native American nursing …

California V. Texas: The Role Of Congressional Procedure In Severability Doctrine, Mary Leto Pareja

Faculty Scholarship

The United States Supreme Court is once again considering a case that challenges the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”). In this round of litigation, plaintiffs argue that because Congress lowered the individual mandate tax penalty to zero in the 2017 Tax Act that makes the individual mandate itself unconstitutional and that, furthermore, the individual mandate cannot be severed from the rest of the ACA. The District Court agreed with the plaintiffs and struck down the entire ACA, and the Supreme Court granted cert to hear this momentous question. A decision is expected by summer of 2021.

The ACA …
