Mothers With Chronic Physical Illness And The Parentification Of Their Children, Marie M. Duryea Feb 2008

Mothers With Chronic Physical Illness And The Parentification Of Their Children, Marie M. Duryea

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

More than 133 million Americans are living with chronic conditions and this number continues to rise (Partnership for Solutions, 2004); by 2020, it is estimated that 157 million people will suffer from chronic illnesses (Anderson, 2003), a large percentage of whom are in their child-rearing stage of life. Incorporating concepts from family systems and family development theories, this exploratory study examined the impact of maternal chronic physical illness on children. Specifically, it examined the extent to which length of illness and symptom severity of fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis; mothers age, educational level, and marital status; perceived effects of the illness …

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Steven Hartman, Sarah Leonard, Angelo Tomedi Jan 2008

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Steven Hartman, Sarah Leonard, Angelo Tomedi

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

While community health workers (CHWs) are being implemented in several developing countries, there has been little work done to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing childhood malnutrition among participating communities. Our study evaluates the effectiveness of CHWs in three Guatemalan villages by comparing anthropomorphic measures and mortality rates of children under five before and after the implementation of a CHW program. While one community showed no significant change in malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age calculations, two other communities showed improved malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age. Weight-for-age comparisons were not statistically significant, and while childhood mortality remained unchanged in one …

A Community Based Micro Hydro: A Promising Technology For Rural Development In Nepal, Bishwa Koirala Sep 2007

A Community Based Micro Hydro: A Promising Technology For Rural Development In Nepal, Bishwa Koirala

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The study finds that micro hydro (MH) has significant impact on reduction in fuel wood consumption. Communities are more inclined to harvest fuel wood from government forest. These led to the promotion of MH for forest conservation in rural Nepal. The study reveals that children have significantly less intensity to go for fuel wood collection. Their saved time can be used for study. The study shows a positive impact on time saving of rural women for fuel wood collection; however, a detail study is essential to conclude the finding. A policy measure for an increase installation of MH in rural …

Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky Sep 2007

Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of todays Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to …
