Physical Fitness And Weight Loss After Surgery For Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case Study, Wendell Wilmoth Aug 2008

Physical Fitness And Weight Loss After Surgery For Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case Study, Wendell Wilmoth

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Objective: While there has been a great deal of research on obstructive sleep apnea and its association with obesity, there is little documentation in the primary literature concerning weight loss and improved physical fitness after medical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This study will document the effects of a reduced calorie diet combined with aerobic conditioning and strength training on a subject who has been treated surgically for obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: The subject participated in a 12-week structured fitness and nutritional program for weight reduction. Pre-program baseline measurements including weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat composition, and waist …

Purpose: To determine the risk factors contributing to and etiologies of gastrointestinal bleeding in an elderly patient population seen by Southwest Gastroenterology (SWGA) providers. Methods: This study reviews charts of patients with GI bleeding from documented sources between 1/1999 and 3/2006. The cases are gathered retrospectively from the clinical records of SWGA, a 12-person private, single specialty gastroenterology group serving community hospitals. Etiology and risk factors for GI hemorrhages are recorded in an elderly population, defined as patients age 55 and older. Results: GI hemorrhages are identified in 105 patients. The majority (83, 79%) of hemorrhages are upper GI bleeds …

Body Composition Changes Among Medical Students Following Matriculation, Kristen Livingstone, Simon Livingstone, Robert Glew, Dorothy Vanderjagt

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Purpose: Participation in medical education has been associated with an increased propensity for poor health in other studies. Information regarding the body composition and physical activity patterns of medical students and how they are affected by the rigors of medical school is lacking in the current literature. We sought to assess changes in body composition and physical activity levels of medical students during the first three years of the curriculum. Methods: Using anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis and a validated physical activity questionnaire, we measured 44 medical students upon matriculation, at the end of the preclinical curriculum (16 months after …

Using Your Tribal Values To Develop An Elder Protection Code: A Step-By-Step Guide For Communities, 2nd Edition, Tribal Elder Abuse Task Force Aug 2008

Using Your Tribal Values To Develop An Elder Protection Code: A Step-By-Step Guide For Communities, 2nd Edition, Tribal Elder Abuse Task Force

Tribal Voices (Events)

The Elder Abuse Task Force organized in 2005 to address elder abuse in New Mexico tribes and Pueblos. Through many meetings and discussions, the Task Force realized that rather than develop a model code; a process was needed by which the tribes and Pueblos of New Mexico could develop a code specific to a community’s governance, traditions, and values. Since the process may be applied to many different communities, the Task Force hopes that this workbook will be a resource used throughout Indian Country.

The purpose of this workbook is to protect elders from abuse in their communities. This workbook …

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Sarah Leonard, Steven Hartman, Angelo Tomedi Jul 2008

Changes In Childhood Malnutrition And Mortality After Institution Of A Community Health Worker Program In Four Rural Guatemalan Villages, Sarah Leonard, Steven Hartman, Angelo Tomedi

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

While community health workers (CHWs) are being implemented in several developing countries, there has been little work done to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing childhood malnutrition among participating communities. Our study evaluates the effectiveness of CHWs in three Guatemalan villages by comparing anthropomorphic measures and mortality rates of children under five before and after the implementation of a CHW program. While one community showed no significant change in malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age calculations, two other communities showed improved malnutrition rates in terms of height-for-age. Weight-for-age comparisons were not statistically significant, and while childhood mortality remained unchanged in one …

Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs And Behaviors Related To Health Among The Indigenous Peoples In Ecuador And The Potential Application Of Telehealth, Ming-Jai Liu, Erika Mendoza, Kevin Henry, Dale Alverson

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

There is much concern of health effects related to gas drilling in the provinces of Ecuador. Recent research has shown a possible correlation between oil drilling and a multitude of health problems (1). Cancer rates in particular may be elevated in populations exposed to the drilling pollutants; while intriguing, this research remains inconclusive in large partly because of difficulties in diagnosing cancer among other health problems in rural populations, but also due to local peoples perception of exposure. It has been determined that previous explorations between petroleum and cancer had not been approached directly in terms of taking indigenous peoples …

Evaluation Of A Community Health Worker Project In Three Guatemalan Villages, Joanna Hooper, Liana Ponce, Pedro Simpson, Angelo Tomedi

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

While community health care workers (CHCW) are being implemented in several developing countries, there is little information as to their effectiveness in reducing childhood malnutrition and mortality. Our study was conducted in three Guatemalan villages and aimed to investigate trends in utilization of the CHCWs and whether or not they are correlated with either the socio-economic status (SES) of the caregiver or the care receiver, as it may have implications for how CHCWs are chosen in the future. We found that in larger more suburban villages CHCWs were utilized less often, and were not necessarily serving those in the greatest …

Breastfeeding Information In Ob/Gyn Textbooks Needs Improvement, Dana Espindola (Schwartz), Anthony Ogburn, Eve Espey, Barbara Philipp, Anne Merewood Jul 2008

Breastfeeding Information In Ob/Gyn Textbooks Needs Improvement, Dana Espindola (Schwartz), Anthony Ogburn, Eve Espey, Barbara Philipp, Anne Merewood

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Pediatricians and obstetricians work side-by-side in educating and supporting the breastfeeding mother and baby. The breastfeeding information in textbooks used by each specialty needs to be consistent, accurate, and evidence-based. A recent study found the breastfeeding information in pediatric textbooks to be highly variable, and at times inaccurate and inconsistent. The objective of this study was to determine if breastfeeding information in general ob/gyn textbooks published since 1999 is current and evidence-based. Five ob/gyn textbooks (the most current editions) were reviewed using a standardized scoring sheet similar to the one used in the pediatric textbook study. Five reviewers (2 obstetricians, …

Vo2 Maximum Of College Athletes, Allison Legler, Whitney Barrett, Christine Mermier, Ann Gateley

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the VO2 max values of college soccer players at the University of New Mexico to data available from other collegiate teams. These values are beneficial for athletes, trainers, and coaches alike. Performance in athletics has improved significantly over the past 20 years as demonstrated by faster times and increased fitness levels. This is due to multiple factors including changes in nutrition, coaching, and equipment. Methods used in this study include a review of the literature specific for collegiate soccer athletes that were published after the year 2000. In addition, data …
