Native Health Database Full Text
Purpose To achieve the health promotions and disease prevention objectives for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) associated with Healthy People 2000, the Indian Health Service focused efforts on developing analytic tools to improve the forecasting and estimation of the effects of its health programs and interventions. This project used existing IHS hospitalization data as well as data derived from the 1980 and 1990 censuses to project the number of patients who will be hospitalized for alcohol-related illnesses up to the year 2005. Methods A long-term projection method was developed in this project. This methodology is designed to assist IHS …

Life Style, Health Status, And Distributive Justice, Robert L. Schwartz

The newest and most original scapegoat upon which we can place the blame for the high cost of health care are those whose life style choices puts their health or lives at risk. Of course, if our health care cost and access problems are a consequence of unhealthy choices made by autonomous individuals, we are relieved of the obligation of figuring out how to reform our health care delivery system. In that case, the solution to our health care problem is obvious - we merely need to impose appropriate penalties on those who make costly, immoral and unhealthy life style …

American Indians In California: Health Status & Access To Health Care., Unknown
Native Health Database Full Text
Because the Indian Health Service does not provide direct services in California, data related to patient care information has been limited. In November 1991, the Indian Health Service addressed this deficiency by presenting a report to the U.S. Congress. This monograph addresses key health status and health care utilization measures from the report. This includes the health effects of the arbitrary and changing nature of federal recognition of those tribes that are eligible for health benefits. Secondary data from the State of California was used in the original report; this summary focuses on vital statistics from California birth and death …

Prevalence Of Chronic Diseases: A Summary Of Data From The Survey Of American Indians And Alaska Natives., A Johnson, A. Taylor
Native Health Database Full Text
This summary report from the 1987 Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives (SAIAN) presents estimates of selected chronic conditions in the non-institutionalized population ages 19 and older and eligible for services provided or supported by the Indian Health Service (IHS). These estimates are compared to similar estimates for the total civilian non-institutionalized US population obtained in the Household Survey of the National Medical Expenditure Survey. Overall prevalence estimates for the SAIAN population are adjusted for age and sex to the total US population; estimates of prevalence by sex are age adjusted.

This report describes a series of six studies on cancer in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women, with a particular emphasis on cancer of the breast and cervix. Data from the Indian Health Service (IHS) inpatient data system was used to generate estimates of incidence of cancer among AI/AN populations. Additionally, breast cancer rates among Indian women in Arizona and New Mexico were compiled from extensive chart review of the New Mexico Tumor Registry and the IHS Inpatient Data System. Study of the performance of the health care system for cancer screening in women suggest that the major deficiency …

This study is an evaluation of the Pascua Yaqui Health Care Plan (PYHCP) established in 1980. This is a pre-paid health service program that contracts the services of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's). This pre-paid contract service differs from the public health care model used by the Indian Health Service (IHS) that emphasizes health promotion and wellness. The prepaid model focuses on cost containment, and was devised as an intermediary step between full IHS responsibility and direct provision of health care, and full tribal responsibility for the provision and management of health care services. This evaluation was intended to answer the …
Parental Investment And Elite Family Structure In Preindustrial States: A Case Study Of Late Medieval-Early Modern Portuguese Genealogies, James L. Boone
Parental Investment And Elite Family Structure In Preindustrial States: A Case Study Of Late Medieval-Early Modern Portuguese Genealogies, James L. Boone
Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications
In this paper I examine the idea that patriarchal family structure among elites in stratified societies originates as a form of parental investment favoring male children. Patriliny and restricted inheritance among 15th- and 16th-century Portuguese nobility are analyzed as reproductive strategies aimed at maximizing lineage survival and posterity in the face of high mortality. Demographic data derived from genealogies show that among the high nobility, males out reproduce females, whereas among the lower nobility, females outreproduced males, and that the tendency to concentrate investment in male offspring correspondingly increases with status. This family structural arrangement has the societal effect of generating …

In 1981, the Indian Health Service (IHS) initiated a program plan for Community Injury Control (CIC). This initiative was a response to the high rate of injury among Native Americans. The programs are the responsibility of the environmental health service officer in each Service Unit of the IHS. The program activities covered areas such as General Safety Training, First Aid Training and CPR, Occupational Safety Training, Motor Vehicle Safety Training, Cultural Identity, and Stress Management. Since this study was conducted too early in the life of the program to assess the long-range impact of community injury control on the injury …
