Project ECHO Bibliography
Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is an innovative model for expanding access to specialty and high-quality primary care in rural areas using telehealth-enabled networked learning. Unlike traditional telemedicine, which enables remote interactions between providers and patients, Project ECHO uses state-of-the-art telecommunications technology and case-based learning to cultivate collaborative mentoring partnerships between specialists and primary care providers. Developed at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center’s ECHO Institute, Project ECHO trains and supports primary care providers to treat complex diseases outside their usual scope of practice, dramatically expanding capacity to provide treatment and improving patient outcomes.

Poisoning by Botulinum Neurotoxins (BoNTs) leads to the severe neuroparalytic illness known as botulism, which is characterized by flaccid paralysis, respiratory failure, and death. BoNTs are the most acutely toxic substances on the planet, so detection at physiologically relevant concentrations is difficult. Because current treatments for botulism cannot reverse existing paralysis, rapid detection is key, and current diagnostic techniques are not meeting this need. We have developed a flow-based assay platform that allows for detection of the Light Chain of BoNT/A as well as a means to study the action of the toxin on its protein substrate in a system …

"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister
"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister
Latin American Studies ETDs
Sugarcane workers in northwestern Nicaragua are suffering from chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnt) at extremely high rates. In the small town of Chichigalpa alone, CKDnt causes 46% of male deaths (Kurzrok et al. 2013). This paper examines the CKD epidemic as a fundamentally structural problem, not merely a biological abnormality, because it is closely linked to labor exploitation, poverty, human rights violations, and historical context. Grounded in literature from medical anthropology and medical sociology and based on two months of ethnographic field research in northwestern Nicaragua, it analyzes how knowledge production interacts with scientific uncertainty about CKDs specific …
The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
The Right To Work In Argentina : Job Policy And Economic Rights In A Worker Cooperative, Patricia Kent
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis provides an exploration of an empresa recuperada por sus trabajadores (worker recovered enterprise, ERT) case study in Argentina in an effort to understand their impact to employment retention during economic crisis. Part of the larger social upheaval resulting from failed economic liberalization during the 1990s, ERTs attempt to implement an alternative economic development strategy through self-management of previously private enterprises. This thesis explores one ERT located in Florencio Varela, Argentina, in an effort to understand the impact the ERTs have in local communities in terms of employment retention and social capital production. Lastly, the analysis examines the role …
Nitrous Oxide For Pain Management During In-Office Hysteroscopic Sterilization, Emily N. Schneider
Nitrous Oxide For Pain Management During In-Office Hysteroscopic Sterilization, Emily N. Schneider
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Objectives: To determine if inhaled nitrous oxide with oxygen (NOS) is superior to oral sedation for pain management during in-office hysteroscopic sterilization. Methods: This double blinded randomized controlled trial enrolled women undergoing in-office hysteroscopic sterilization. The intervention group received NOS titrated to a maximum 70%:30% NO:O2 mixture and placebo pills 30 minutes prior to the procedure. The control group received inhaled O2 during the procedure and 5/325mg hydrocodone/acetaminophen and 1mg lorazepam 30 minutes prior to the procedure. The primary outcome was maximum procedural pain, assessed on a 100mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) 3 minutes post procedure. A sample size of …
Immediate Postpartum Versus Interval Intrauterine Devices And Implant: A Cost Utility Analysis, Michelle R. Chungtuyco
Immediate Postpartum Versus Interval Intrauterine Devices And Implant: A Cost Utility Analysis, Michelle R. Chungtuyco
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Objectives: To compare the cost per quality of life (QALY) between immediate postpartum and interval initiation of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants from the societal perspective. Cost per unintended pregnancy prevented between timing strategies was also compared. Methods: Two decision analytic models were created using TreeAge Pro 2015 software for TCu380A IUD and levonorgestrel IUD and for the contraceptive implant. Each model compared immediate postpartum versus interval contraceptive provision to determine the occurrence of pregnancy events over time and their impact on costs and QALYs, using a time horizon of 1 to 5 years. The probabilities of insertion, expulsion/removal, …
Effects Of Low-Dose Gamma Radiation In A Murine Model Of Benzo[A]Pyrene-Induced Lung Cancer, Veronica R. Bruce
Effects Of Low-Dose Gamma Radiation In A Murine Model Of Benzo[A]Pyrene-Induced Lung Cancer, Veronica R. Bruce
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related mortality in the United States and in the world. One of the carcinogenic compounds found in cigarette smoke, Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), at high levels elicits a number of inflammatory events consistent with those found in lung cancer patients. In our studies, the effects of low-dose gamma radiation (LDR) on carcinogenesis and tumor progression in a murine model of B[a]P-induced lung cancer were investigated. Two studies (46 weeks in duration) were conducted to assess the effects of fractionated doses of low-dose gamma rays on whole body irradiated A/J mice either before or following …
Agricultural Preferences In Eastern Water Allocation Statutes, Jesse J. Richardson Jr.
Agricultural Preferences In Eastern Water Allocation Statutes, Jesse J. Richardson Jr.
Natural Resources Journal
The eastern United States generally lacks statutory limits on the use of water for agricultural uses, particularly irrigation. Commentators lament this deficit and advocate for statutory limits, citing certain problematic cases, such as Georgia’s former exemption for agricultural water use. No research surveys the status of agricultural water use in the eastern United States under so-called “regulated riparian” statutes. This article examines water use and the statutory water allocation rules in 19 eastern states with regulated riparian statutes to determine the extent of agricultural water uses in the East, as well as whether adequate controls are in place for such …

"The Four Horseman Of The Late Capitalist Apocalypse": U.S. Comic Books, Ideology, And Trauma In Post-9/11 Society, Kathryn Manis
Art & Art History ETDs
In the contemporary United States apocalypse, dystopia, and catastrophe are commonplace. Indeed, both the increasing presence of fictional apocalypse in art and popular culture and the tone of apocalypticism in U.S. political, environmental, and social rhetorics, have been noted by writers and thinkers from a wide range of fields. Scholars of neoliberalism in particular have traced this popularity to the economic and political realities of late-capitalism and the ideological contradictions embedded in the evolution of capitalism to its current, immersive iteration. What has gone undiscussed, however, is the relationship of this anxious preoccupation to a prevailing, national condition; a condition …
