Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole Sep 2015

Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Proteins play a critical role in nearly every biological activity. In consequence, organismal health and homeostasis often hinges on the ability of intracellular regulatory systems to sustain the quality and function of these diverse, structurally complex macromolecules. Correct protein function depends on correct form, and during periods of destabilizing cellular stress, protein quality is managed in part by the heat shock response, which acts to support, isolate, and reform new or damaged proteins, and in part by the autophagic recycling of abnormal proteins, cytotoxic protein aggregates, and terminally damaged organelles. We conducted a pooled analysis of available research in humans …

Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller Sep 2015

Investigation Of Membrane Fouling And Cleaning In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Of Municipal Wastewater, Michelle Miller

Civil Engineering ETDs

Municipal wastewater discharge to the environment is generally subject to regulations established under the Clean Water Act. Though the water is highly treated it is not suitable for human consumption. Increased interest in water reuse for potable supply introduces concern about trace constituents present in their water, such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors. Current treatment processes, such as reverse osmosis, are used to remove many of these compounds, but is expensive and energy intensive. The rise of interest in potable water reuse may cause consumers to be concerned about trace constituents present in their water and would require additional treatment. …

Midlife Urinary Incontinence And The Intimate Dyad, Lori Sue Saiki Sep 2015

Midlife Urinary Incontinence And The Intimate Dyad, Lori Sue Saiki

Nursing ETDs

Urinary incontinence is a major health concern for midlife women, with demonstrated effects on self-concept, life-style, and sexual function. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of midlife female urinary incontinence on the intimate dyad from a chronic illness perspective. The Corbin and Strauss Collaborative Chronic Illness Trajectory Model identifies biographical and relationship work engaged in when coping with a chronic health condition in the context of an intimate relationship. The specific aims of this study were to explore potential associations among urinary incontinence symptom severity, relationship satisfaction, biographical work factors (self-esteem, body image, depression, anxiety), and …

Family Policy In Post-Communist Europe And The Former Soviet Union: Assessing The Impact Of Xenophobia, Marina A. Kingsbury Sep 2015

Family Policy In Post-Communist Europe And The Former Soviet Union: Assessing The Impact Of Xenophobia, Marina A. Kingsbury

Political Science ETDs

This dissertation emphasizes the comparative aspect of family policy, with a regional focus on post-communist Europe. Following the turmoil of transition, many social welfare programs were transformed and often scaled back. Family policies, however, were largely carried through the initial period of transformation, despite the economic difficulties and the dramatic decline in birth rates in a course of several years. This study was inspired by the seeming contradiction between falling birth rates and increasing generosity of family policy provisions across the former communist European countries. This dissertation uses original data, which includes levels of benefit provision as well as national …

Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu Sep 2015

Design, Synthesis And Evaluation Of Bivalent Inhibitors Of Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase, Chunliang Liu

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The D-glucose disaccharide α, α-D-trehalose is synthesized by a variety of bacteria, fungi, plants and invertebrates to support cell survival by functioning as a fuel, a metabolic regulator or a protectant against environmental stress. Five different trehalose biosynthetic pathways are known to exist, one of which, the OtsA/OtsB pathway is common among pathogenic bacteria and fungi and is also found in parasitic nematodes. Previously reported otsA and otsB gene knockout (or knockdown) experiments have shown that both pathway enzymes are essential for M. tuberculosis cell growth and host colonization. RNAi gene silencing carried out in the nematode model system Caenohabditis …

Wellbore Microannulus Characterization And Seal Repair: Computational And Lab Scale Modeling, Steven Gomez Sep 2015

Wellbore Microannulus Characterization And Seal Repair: Computational And Lab Scale Modeling, Steven Gomez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Subsurface geologic formations used for extracting resources such as oil and gas can subsequently be used as a storage reservoir for the common greenhouse gas CO2, a concept known as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Pre-existing wellbores penetrate the reservoirs where supercritical CO2 is to be injected. These wellbores can potentially be a pathway for contamination if CO2 leaks through wellbore flaws to an overlying aquifer or the atmosphere. Characterizing wellbore integrity and providing zonal isolation by repairing these wellbore flaws is of critical importance to the long-term isolation of CO2 and success of CCS. This research aims to characterize …

Suicide Assessment Training In Counselor Education, Neil Rigsbee Sep 2015

Suicide Assessment Training In Counselor Education, Neil Rigsbee

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This dissertation examines the empirical literature regarding assessment and intervention of suicide, specifically regarding training counseling students to assess and intervene with potentially suicidal individuals. The author developed an online suicide assessment and intervention training module to train counseling students how to assess and intervene with suicidal clients. The author examined the effectiveness of the training module using an experimental randomized controlled pre-post design. Participants were assessed on their suicide intervention skills using the Suicide Intervention Response Inventory-2 (Neimeyer & Bonnelle, 1997), and suicide assessment abilities, abilities to determine level of suicide risk, and abilities to determine appropriate clinical actions …

A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale Sep 2015

A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

In this study, I explored the role and function of counselor educators' ideology in their sexuality counseling pedagogy, as demonstrated by teaching philosophy, curriculum, and teaching strategies. In line with my theoretical framework, queer feminist pedagogy, I employed qualitative multicase methodology with six counselor educators, bounded by the shared phenomena of teaching sexuality-focused counseling curricula. I performed critical discourse analysis on the dialogic and textual discourse generated from interviews and curricular document mining to identify ideologies embedded in educators' discourse. The analysis revealed the considerable influence of personal ideology on educators' sexuality counseling pedagogy, which constituted the following themes: (a) …

Generic Safety Issue-191 (GSI-191) was developed by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) to assess the effect of debris loading on pressurized water reactor (PWR) emergency core cooling systems (ECCS) sump strainers during a Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA). Potential contributors to the debris loading include latent dirt, fiberglass insulation, paints, epoxies, and chemical products which form when containment surfaces interact with the released reactor coolant. Chemical effects experiments have been completed to assess the potential debris loading contributions of zinc-bearing materials found in the containment building. Zinc-bearing materials in containment include galvanized steel and inorganic zinc-coated steel (IOZ). This …

A Relevant Comparison Between Buprenorphine And Methadone In Various Aspects, Kanwal Qidwai Aug 2015

A Relevant Comparison Between Buprenorphine And Methadone In Various Aspects, Kanwal Qidwai

Clinical and Translational Science Center Scholarly Output

In 1974, FDA approved Methadone, an opioid agonist for Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT), a well-known rehabilitation program for opioid use disorder. Due to severe side effects of Methadone including withdrawal, relapse, respiratory depression, and death, FDA restricted MMT to be managed under the supervision of opioid licensed facility in inpatient settings. Opioid dependence due to chronic pain and subsequent addiction in US has increased enormously in the last two decades and has led to an emergent need of a flexible treatment method that has minimal side effects, is cost effective and can be prescribed in office-based settings. In 2002, FDA …
