Empowered!® Tool, Andrea Merriam

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

The emPowered!® Tool is a communication resource to help people with Parkinson’s, family members, and clinicians discuss symptoms and disease progression more effectively and efficiently.

In a PMD Alliance survey, 63% of people with Parkinson’s (PwP) reported that they forgot to share something important with their doctor, 57% reported that they minimize the impact of their symptoms when talking with their doctor, and 30% were concerned that they would be perceived as a complainer. This data, combined with ethnographic research of hundreds of PwP, care partners, and clinicians, motivated PMD Alliance to develop the emPowered!® Tool.

Not simply a symptom …

National Ms Society Covid-19 Response, Vicki Kowal

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

The COVID-19 “shut down” occurred in March 2020 during MS Awareness month, immediately altering National Multiple Sclerosis Society services and events. Within one week, approximately 1,000 staff nationwide were working from home, including MS Navigators who provide direct assistance to people affected by multiple sclerosis.

In addition to MS Navigator, in-person fundraising events, patient education programs, self-help group meetings, healthcare provider meetings, healthcare provider education, and MS activism successfully switched to virtual formats. Unfortunately, fundraising and staffing were adversely affected. The Society faced many challenges, but also experienced successes, including the rapid launch of UNM’s Project ECHO which educated and …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Introduction

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor and carries a poor prognosis. Despite aggressive multimodality treatment, the median survival is approximately 18- 20 months, depending on molecular subgroups. While it’s known that older adults with GBM have a worse prognosis compared to younger patients, the precise molecular mechanism(s) and key mediator(s) of this aging-related phenomenon remain largely unknown.

Methods

We extracted data of 593 primary GBM patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) (www.cancergenome.nih.gov). The data included age at diagnosis, treatment (surgical versus non- surgical), outcome (deceased versus living), survival time, Karnofsky performance score (KPS), and …

With the declaration of a worldwide pandemic in March 2020 (World Health Organization 2020), COVID-19 has become a primary focus of governments and public health systems across the world with increases in infection and death rates. By mid-April 2020, more than 80% of countries had imposed containment and mitigation measures. But for developing nations, the threats of this global pandemic are more acute given the lack of resources and the capacity to deal with a shock of this magnitude (Loayza 2020). Despite calling for a lockdown on March 24th, 2020 (Pradhan 2020), Nepal faces several public health challenges including limited …

The First Amendment And The Female Listener, Loren Jacobson Jan 2021

The First Amendment And The Female Listener, Loren Jacobson

New Mexico Law Review

When the Supreme Court has considered whether laws that affect women’s decisions about their health and bodies violate the Free Speech Clause, it has ignored the informational needs of the very women that such laws regulate. I argue that, instead, the Supreme Court should value women’s informational and decision-making needs and properly place them at the center of a First Amendment analysis of laws that affect women in particular. Towards that goal, the Supreme Court should take a listener-centered approach to laws that affect women’s decision-making. There is a strong basis for a listener-centered approach in the Court’s Free Speech …

Recommendations For Clinical Laboratory Testing For Protein S Deficiency: Communication From The Ssc Committee Plasma Coagulation Inhibitors Of The Isth, Richard A. Marlar, Jana N. Gausman, Hiroko Tsuda, Marian A. Rollins-Raval, Herm Jan M. Brinkman

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Hereditary deficiencies of protein S (PS) increase the risk of venous thrombosis; however, assessing the plasma levels of PS can be difficult because of its complex physiological interactions in plasma, sample-related preanalytical variables, and numerous acquired disease processes. Reliable laboratory assays are essential for accurate evaluation of PS when diagnosing a congenital deficiency based on the plasma phenotype alone. This report presents the current evidence-based recommendations for clinical PS assays as well as when to test for PS abnormalities.

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Hematopathology fellowship education has grown in complexity as patient-centered treatment plans have come to depend on integration of clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, molecular, and cytogenetic variables. This complexity is in competition with the need for timely hematopathology care with stewardship of patient, laboratory, and societal resources. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones provide a guidance document for hematopathology training, but fellows and their educators are in need of a simple framework that allows assessment and feedback of growth toward independent hematopathology practice. Entrustable professional activities provide one such framework, and herein, we provide proposed Hematopathology Fellowship Entrustable Professional Activities based …

INTRODUCTION: Urine self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical cancer screening is a non-invasive method that offers several logistical advantages and high acceptability, reducing barriers related to low screening coverage. This study developed and evaluated the performance of a low-cost urine self-sampling method for HPV-testing and explored the acceptability and feasibility of potential implementation of this alternative in routine screening.

METHODS: A series of sequential laboratory assays examined the impact of several pre-analytical conditions for obtaining DNA from urine and subsequent HPV detection. Initially, we assessed the effect of ethylaminediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a DNA preservative examining several variables including EDTA …

Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis In An Immunocompetent Patient: Report Of A Case And Review Of The Literature, Jordan P. Redemann, Karla A. Thornton, Jay S. Raval, Mohammed Vasef Jan 2021

Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis In An Immunocompetent Patient: Report Of A Case And Review Of The Literature, Jordan P. Redemann, Karla A. Thornton, Jay S. Raval, Mohammed Vasef

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Coccidioidomycosis is endemic to the Southwestern United States as well as parts of Mexico, Central, and South America. Coccidioides infection is typically subclinical or mild and self-limited. Disseminated coccidioidomycosis is uncommon except in immunosuppressed, post-transplant, or pregnant patients. Disseminated coccidioides in immunocompetent individuals is rare. We report a case of a young, apparently immunocompetent, individual who developed disseminated coccidiomycosis diagnosed at the time of a bedside splenectomy for abdominal decompression. Clinical and histological findings are discussed with review of literature.

Primary Temporal Bone Meningioma Presenting As Chronic Mastoiditis And Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis: Report Of A Case With Literature Analysis, Mary Torrez, Edgar Fischer, Shweta Agarwal Jan 2021

Primary Temporal Bone Meningioma Presenting As Chronic Mastoiditis And Sigmoid Sinus Thrombosis: Report Of A Case With Literature Analysis, Mary Torrez, Edgar Fischer, Shweta Agarwal

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Primary extra cranial meningioma of the ear and temporal bone are exceedingly rare, making up less than 1% of all meningiomas. Histologically, they are indistinguishable from their intracranial counterpart. The histopathologic diagnosis is often challenging, and the differential diagnosis for neoplasms in this unusual location is quite extensive. We report a 64-year-old male patient with history of seizures who presented with coalescing mastoiditis and sigmoid sinus thrombosis. CT and MRI findings were suggestive of a chronic inflammatory process. Operative findings included a flesh-colored mass extending from the mastoid antrum posteriorly towards the Sigmoid sinus. Intraoperative consultation was requested, yielding a …

Aging And Gender In The Tsimane’: Differences In Energy Expenditure, Physical Activity, And Horticultural Work, Daniel Kruse Cummings

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to measure and explain age- and sex-related differences in energy expenditure, physical activity, and patterns of horticultural work, in the Tsimane’, a subsistence forager-horticulturalist population from the Bolivian Amazon. Changes in the way energy is used with advancing age has important implications for the tradeoffs negotiated within the aging body as it partitions increasingly limited energy among competing life functions. It is guided by a theoretical framework which posits the co-evolution of the unique suite of fast and slow human life history traits, cooperative production of resources, and ageand sex-specific schedules of growth, production, …

New Mexico Law Review

This article explores design justice as a framework for deeper inclusion in municipal criminal court reform. Section I provides a brief summary of a typical litigant’s path through modern municipal courts. Then, section I explores the historic role of municipal courts, the insider/outsider dichotomy of municipal criminal regulation, and the limitations of past reform efforts. Section II shifts into an overview of participatory design and discusses the new emergence of design justice. Within the discussion of design justice, the article focuses on three precepts of design justice: excavating the history and impact of the courts, creating tools for participation, and …

Adult Children Private Facebook Group, Andrea Merriam

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

An online forum for adult children of people with Parkinson’s allows peers living a shared experience to offer support, share tips and information, and be heard.

Living optimally despite the complex and progressive symptoms of Parkinson disease requires a team effort with caregivers and family members playing both offense and defense positions. They alternate planning and preparing for the future with responding and adjusting to the constant demands and problems encountered every day. In nearly all aging populations, adult children at some point become heavily involved in screening treatments, interventions and support. This is particularly true with PD due to …

Predictors Of In-Hospital Mortality And Length Of Stay After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Conventional Regression Versus Machine Learning-Based Analyses, Syed Faraz Kazim, Tolga Sursal, Meic H. Schmidt, Christian A. Bowers, Chad D. Cole

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Introduction

Severe traumatic brain injury [sTBI, defined as Glasgow coma scale (GCS) < 8] is a catastrophic form of TBI associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Outcome prediction after sTBI is critical for clinical decision making and the realistic assessment of quality of care. In the present study, we compared conventional statistical techniques versus machine learning (ML)- based random forest model to identify predictors of hospital mortality and length of stay (LOS) in sTBI patients.

Methods

A retrospective chart review was conducted of all patients (including both adult and pediatric) with sTBI admitted between 2015-2018 (n = 168). Conventional univariate (Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r) and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine the predictors of mortality and hospital LOS. For random forest ML modeling, 14 variables for mortality and 12 variables for LOS were evaluated as potential splitters at each node. The variable importance (in predicting mortality or LOS) was measured based on the Gini impurity index (mean decrease Gini/IncNodePurity). The Receiving …

The present survey was performed to characterize perceptions of neurosurgical community globally towards neurosurgical online educational resources that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods:

A 21-question anonymous REDCap-based online survey was distributed to faculty, fellows, and residents in neurosurgical residency programs in US and across the globe between February 12, 2021 and March 16, 2021. Statistical analyses were performed using …

The Role Of Interleukin-10 In Regulating Neuroinflammation Relevant To Tauopathies, Lea L. Weston, Shanya Jiang, Devon Chisholm, Kiran Bhaskar Jan 2021

The Role Of Interleukin-10 In Regulating Neuroinflammation Relevant To Tauopathies, Lea L. Weston, Shanya Jiang, Devon Chisholm, Kiran Bhaskar

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Tauopathies are neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, that are associated with pathological accumulation of the microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT, or tau) (Lee et al., 2001). Abnormal hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau) strongly correlate with cognitive impairment (Nelson et al., 2012). Neuroinflammation is also associated with tauopathies (Gerhard et al., 2006b; Edison et al., 2008) and is implicated in driving tau pathology (Yoshiyama et al., 2007, Maphis et al., 2015b). Therefore, it is compelling to understand the role of anti-inflammatory cytokines in limiting neuroinflammation and tau pathology. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a well-established anti-inflammatory cytokine with roles in limiting inflammation in the central …

Reversal Of Prenatal Alcohol-Induced Deficits In Long-Term Potentiation By The Histamine H3 Inverse Agonist Sar153954, Monica Goncalves-Garcia, Suzy Davies, Daniel D. Savage, Derek A. Hamilton

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Cognitive impairments are common consequences of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The hippocampus is susceptible to the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) which persist throughout an individual’s life. Previous studies have identified deficits in long-term potentiation (LTP) in perforant pathway to dentate gyrus synapses as an adverse consequence of PAE. Although there have been numerous investigations, PAE-induced deficits in synaptic plasticity remain poorly understood. Currently, there are no known, clinically effective pharmacotherapeutic interventions for these deficits. This study investigated the effects of PAE on LTP in the dentate gyrus and the H3 receptor inverse agonist, SAR152954, as a candidate …
