New Mexico's Nuclear Enchantment: Local Politics, National Imperatives, And Radioactive Waste Disposal In The Desert, Jennifer Richter Sep 2013

New Mexico's Nuclear Enchantment: Local Politics, National Imperatives, And Radioactive Waste Disposal In The Desert, Jennifer Richter

American Studies ETDs

The use of nuclear technologies has left an indelible mark on American society. The environmental, political, economic, and social costs of creating, producing, and utilizing technologies such as nuclear weapons and nuclear energy have left a legacy of radioactive waste. To date, there is no comprehensive path for disposing of the different kinds of waste produced by the nuclear industry, including spent nuclear fuel that is now held on site at nuclear power plants. The question of how to deal with nuclear waste has plagued the nuclear industry, governmental agencies, and the concerned public for most of the nuclear era. …

Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan Sep 2013

Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan

History ETDs

In examining the area surrounding Columbus, New Mexico, and Palomas, Chihuahua, as a landscape of violence, this dissertation historicizes the process by which violent actions create a sense of place. Although neither town is considered large enough to be of much consequence, both were targeted by bellicose campaigns that sought to destabilize the Mexican state during the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution. Raids on the Palomas customs house were, at least in part, responses to the drive of the Mexican government under Porfirio Díaz to create modern progress and order in Mexico. For many inhabitants of rural northwestern Chihuahua, the …

Azúcar Negra: (Re) Envisioning Race, Representation, And Resistance In The Afrofeminista Imaginary, Kiley Jeanelle Guyton Acosta

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

In this dissertation, I locate contemporary articulations of afrofeminismo in manifold modes of cultural production including literature, music, visual displays of the body, and digital media. As a point of departure, I examine the development of afrofeminismo in relation to colonial sexual violence in sugar-based economies to explain how colonial dynamics inflect ideologies of blanqueamiento/embranquecimento (racial whitening) and pseudo-scientific racial determinism. In this context, I address representations of the mujer negra (black woman) and the mulata (mulatto woman) in Caribbean and Brazilian cultural discourse. Specifically, I analyze how the discourses around, as well as by, these figures contribute(d) to the …

Restraurant Regions : An Ecological Community Based Model Of Restaurant Chain Distribution In The United States, Stephen Griego

Geography ETDs

The scope of this paper is an exercise in regional identification within the geography of the United States. This paper applied a hierarchical clustering methodology to analyze the distribution of restaurants in the landscape. The clustering model utilized in this study is commonly used in analysis of ecological communities. Each restaurant chain was treated as an individual biological species, and the clustering software analyzed it as such. The individual restaurant chain locations were treated as individual samples in the environment. Wards (1963) algorithm was used to group the individual restaurant chain locations into related clusters using simple correlation as the …

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell Jul 2013

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell

Geography ETDs

The sugar plantation zone of Pernambuco, Brazil, with a conservative culture forged out of chattel slave history, has been the most challenging region for the Brazilian landless peasants movement to penetrate in order to implement agrarian reform. The movement founded the Frei Gondim Settlement in the heart of the region in 1994 in order to present an alternative to the pollution of sugar monoculture and the injustices of landlessness around it. This thesis holds that the settlement represents a true alternative, but that the juxtaposition of a settlement socially isolated from its surroundings with a mode of production in which …

The Effect Of Airport Delays On The Evolution Of The U.S. Air Travel Network, Eric Cox Jul 2013

The Effect Of Airport Delays On The Evolution Of The U.S. Air Travel Network, Eric Cox

Geography ETDs

An investigation is made into the question of how U.S. airlines respond to airport-based delays at domestic airports using data from the FAAs On-Time Performance database and aircraft inventories for major U.S. Airlines. Three delay mitigation techniques are studied: increasing aircraft size, rerouting transit passengers, and decreasing schedule peaking. Regression analysis is used to determine where significant relationships exist between study variables and the overall level of flight delay for all airlines at each airport they serve. T-Tests indicate schedule peaking is more likely to be increased at airports with higher levels of delay, but that no specific airline undertakes …

Sovereign Conflicts And Divided Loyalties: Native American Survivance In The Era Of Nuclear Modernity Story Of The Western Shoshone And Their Response To The Yucca Mountain High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository, Amy Sue Goodin Jul 2013

Sovereign Conflicts And Divided Loyalties: Native American Survivance In The Era Of Nuclear Modernity Story Of The Western Shoshone And Their Response To The Yucca Mountain High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository, Amy Sue Goodin

American Studies ETDs

This is the story of the ways in which the Western Shoshone have articulated identities amidst the ever-changing structures of governance that have defined U.S.-Native intergovernmental relations since the early days of U.S. efforts to colonize the American continent. However, the story focuses on nuclear colonialism. At issue is the specific nature of tribal participation in nuclear waste policy under emergent conditions of possibility as defined by U.S.-Native intergovernmental interactions (or a lack thereof). Ultimately, then, it is a story of how the Western Shoshone have articulated adaptive identities to assure survivance both physically and culturally to combat U.S. efforts …

Remediation Of Sand Dune Blowouts Along Pipeline Right Of Ways., Knutt Peterson

Geography ETDs

Blowouts in sand dunes along pipeline right of ways are a problem facing many pipeline maintenance companies, environmentalists, and public land managers. Blowouts form in sandy soils when the ground surface is not protected from seasonal winds. The ground surface becomes unprotected when there is a lack of vegetation covering the pipeline right of way. Most pipeline maintenance companies are using temporary mitigation methods. Results presented in this study demonstrate that there are low cost, long term solutions to the problem of blowouts along pipeline right of ways. Studies were conducted using three low cost mitigation methods. Branch piles showed …

Second, it quantified indoor tobacco smoke pollution specifically in rural areas. Third, it used random sampling, a method rarely used in studying indoor tobacco smoke pollution. Fourth, it analyzed tobacco smoke exposure as a function of socioeconomic status. A …

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira Jul 2013

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira

Latin American Studies ETDs

The borderline that currently divides the island of Hispaniola has undergone a complicated process of definition. Since colonial times, central authorities have claimed the area while contradictorily ignoring the societies that developed in the region. It was not until the first decades of the twentieth century that the two countries were officially divided and a borderline was enforced. The massacre of approximately 15,000 Haitians ordered by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1937 is the event that brought attention to the border nationalization process. In my research I argue that the conflict between the two countries had both an economic …

Soy Gaucho: Nationalism And Modernity In Argentina, Geneva M. L. Smith

Anthropology ETDs

Set in rural Argentina, debates over cultural recognition, land rights, and economic opportunity have been waged throughout the countrys history. By lodging the analysis in Argentina's rural zones, this project examines the series of neoliberal economic policies that led to a widespread shift to agricultural biotechnology, the ensuing social effects including urbanization due to decreasing rural labor opportunities, and the potential for new or hybridized political economies in the form of post-neoliberalism that have emerged out of Argentina's devastating 2001 economic crisis. In recent years, there have been accelerated agronomic and demographic shifts in Argentina's rural sector as farmers turn …

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert Jul 2013

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Social justice movements organize against contemporary conditions of oppression and domination. Today’s movements often target neoliberalism as an agent of both economic and cultural marginalization, citing environmental degradation, increasing wealth disparities in the information/service economy, and destruction of community-based institutions in the name of capital accumulation. One such example is the right to the city, both an intellectual idea and organizing framework for social action. The right to the city utilizes a Marxist framework to argue that cities are part of capitalist processes of production and, thus, space can and must be a site of intervention in the service of …

Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Public participation has enjoyed a long, if embattled, history in the field of urban planning in the U.S. Although mandated by federal, state and local regulations, designing processes for meaningful public participation has proven difficult for both practical and political reasons. Recognizing the inadequacies of traditional participation methods – particularly in strengthening democracy, valuing local knowledge and pursuing social justice - many planning practitioners and participation theorists held high aspirations for the potential of communication technology in the networked world of Web 2.0 to transform the role of the public in improving the quality of urban environments. Although research in …

The Return Of The Serbian Other: Interpretative Repertoires Of Nationalism And Identity Politics In Online News Discourses On Serbia's Integration In The European Union, Jelena Petrovic Jul 2013

The Return Of The Serbian Other: Interpretative Repertoires Of Nationalism And Identity Politics In Online News Discourses On Serbia's Integration In The European Union, Jelena Petrovic

Communication ETDs

After more than a decade of political investment in integration, Serbia is still awaiting full membership into the European Union and thus is kept on the periphery of an imagined European community. In this difficult and uncertain process, Serbs have faced fractured national discourses that are inscribed with new forms of liminality encapsulated in an externally ascribed position of "flawed Europeans." This dissertation explores the co-construction of national identities in the context of public debate about the country's integration into the EU on Serbian online news websites. Informed by the theoretical and methodological framework of discursive psychology, this research identified …
