Collaborative Community Development Of Rural Places And Local Assets, Susan P. Vigil Jul 2014

Collaborative Community Development Of Rural Places And Local Assets, Susan P. Vigil

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This work is compiled from reflections on community development efforts in a rural New Mexico region invested with shared traditions and livelihoods emerging from a unique location herein referred to as the "Village of Magdalena, City of Socorro Study Area". The possibility that rural communities may leverage place-based resources and networks comprehensively comprises this study's propositional anlage to spark questions as to how leveraging may unfold through initiatives supporting both arts and agricultural activities. How communities identify with their location--its history, economy, resource and communal spaces-defines opportunities both realized and imagined in this scarcely populated New Mexico place. Interviews and …

Success Of Small-Scale Farms In The Middle Rio Grande Region, Sarah Wentzel-Fisher Jul 2014

Success Of Small-Scale Farms In The Middle Rio Grande Region, Sarah Wentzel-Fisher

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Food systems development, while historically not the purview of professional planners, would benefit greatly from their interdisciplinary expertise. Small agricultural businesses are important economic and social drivers in the Middle Rio Grande. Increased demand for locally grown foods by Middle Rio Grande residents and food businesses, like restaurants and grocery stores, mean that more than ever, farm businesses have opportunities for success and for making meaningful contributions to their communities. In addition, many of the necessary resources exist right here in this area that can enable local growers’ success, including agricultural land, irrigation infrastructure, easy access to markets, and a …

The End Of Sustainability, Melinda Harm Benson, Robin Kundis Craig May 2014

The End Of Sustainability, Melinda Harm Benson, Robin Kundis Craig

Publications

It is time to move past the concept of sustainability. The realities of the Anthropocene warrant this conclusion. They include unprecedented and irreversible rates of human-induced biodiversity loss, exponential increases in per-capita resource consumption, and global climate change. These factors combine to create an increasing likelihood of rapid, nonlinear, social and ecological regime changes. The recent failure of the Rio +20 provides an opportunity to collectively reexamine--and ultimately move past--the concept of sustainability as an environmental goal. We must face the impossibility of defining--let alone pursuing--a goal of "sustainability" in a world characterized by such extreme complexity, radical uncertainty and …

Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte Apr 2014

Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte

Faculty Publications

The conference “Cultures of Exile: Conversations on Language and the Arts,” co-organized by Professors Eleni Bastea and Walter Putnam, was inspired by the music of Georges Moustaki (1934--2013), especially his song “Le Métèque” (1969). In “Le Métèque” Moustaki dealt with outsiders, strangers, and all those who do not share one homogeneous place of origin. What does it mean to be a “métèque,” an exile, an outsider today? Although often associated with loss and victimhood, exile can also foster artistic freedom, creativity, renewal, and empowerment. What is the role of the new place in the development of one’s artistic oeuvre? How …

Invention And Contention: Place, Identity And Memory Of The Spanish Past In The American Southwest, 1848-1940, Brian Luna Lucero Feb 2014

Invention And Contention: Place, Identity And Memory Of The Spanish Past In The American Southwest, 1848-1940, Brian Luna Lucero

History ETDs

As the twentieth century unfolded, American writers, critics, and boosters presented a narrative of the arid Southwest as an exotic place blessed with a romantic history that could inspire, captivate and renew the many new white citizens flocking to rapidly growing cities. The history of Spanish colonialism in the area became a precious and exclusive cultural and economic resource. This dissertation tells the story of the commemoration of the Spanish past from 1848 to 1940 in three Spanish towns that grew into prominent American cities: Tucson, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and San Antonio, Texas. In chapters centered on space, historic …

The Columbus Myth: Power And Ideology In Picturebooks About Christopher Columbus, Christina M. Desai Feb 2014

The Columbus Myth: Power And Ideology In Picturebooks About Christopher Columbus, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbuss landing in the Bahamas was simultaneously celebrated and denounced in the US. Damaging facts about Columbus and the impact of his voyages were aired along with demands for truth and change. This study analyzes the power relationships and political ideology of picturebooks about Columbus published in the US in the 20 years since that anniversary to determine what messages and attitudes young readers are likely to absorb from them and whether the picturebook image of Columbus has evolved. It draws on the ideas of progressive educator Herbert Kohl, who demonstrates how the analysis …

Use Of Incentive-Based Pricing: Cataloguing Current Water Rate Structures And Analyzing Community Adopter Characteristics For Select Municipalities In New Mexico, Ashley M. Hooper Jan 2014

Use Of Incentive-Based Pricing: Cataloguing Current Water Rate Structures And Analyzing Community Adopter Characteristics For Select Municipalities In New Mexico, Ashley M. Hooper

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Facing water scarcity, population growth, and issues of climate change, New Mexico municipalities should consider incentive-based pricing (IBP), empirically shown to encourage conservation. Given that adoption of IBP will likely be affected by community and political will, it is important to know what socio-economic and demographic factors may influence a municipalitys decision to adopt. As such, this research descriptively summarizes and catalogues the use of IBP structures for a select sample of 30 NM communities; further, t-tests are used to statistically investigate significant differences in a select set of 12 community characteristics between those that adopt IBP and those that …

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D. Jan 2014

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D.

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Most current research on forced migration focuses on explaining patterns of displacement during armed conflicts and the role that social networks play in pulling people away from conflict torn areas. But what happens to displaced persons after a conflict ends? While many of these individuals are able to resettle in the place to which they fled during conflict, some individuals return to their places of origin while others remain in limbo. This research seeks to better understand behavior after flight. Using a rational choice framework, we theorize that people are strategic in their calculations of the costs and benefits of …

Supporting Diverse Online Learners, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Learner support is the critical link in online education. A learner support system is comprised of human and non-human resources that contribute to the learning process of an online course and should be designed as an integral part of the course. For example, if the online course requires students to access library resources to complete a research paper, then, easy access to library resources must be provided as part of the learner support system for that course. Learner support for online learners will differ based on the context, learner characteristics such as needs, expectations, prior learning experiences, etc., and the …

Striae Re-Negotiated: The Self-Definition Of The Yiddish-Speaking Jewish Community In The Era Of Mexicos Raza Cósmica, Beth Merfish Dec 2013

Striae Re-Negotiated: The Self-Definition Of The Yiddish-Speaking Jewish Community In The Era Of Mexicos Raza Cósmica, Beth Merfish

Research Papers

This essay examines Mexican Jewish documents through which that community navigated the political terrain of post-Revolution Mexico. Central to this discussion is tension between Jewish desires to become part of this new nation and the imperative to remain a discreet cultural and religious community. I first examine the pressures of assimilation in 1920s Mexico exemplified by José Vasconcelos 1925 La raza cosmica and then probe the Yiddish-speaking Jewish community's response and self-definition in relation to a rapidly developing nation, using two case studies: the Jewish community's political position publicized in the 1929 Asociación de Jóvenes Israelitas de México bulletin and …

Sowing Seeds For The Future To Honor Tigua History And Tradition: Diabetes Prevention And Management At Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, Sean Patrick Bruna-Lewis

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines type 2 diabetes management and prevention at Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a federally recognized American Indian tribe in El Paso, Texas. Type 2 diabetes is a serious and growing concern at the Pueblo, and while the incidence is not as high as it is in other tribes in the United States, it is still much higher than the national average. Despite excellent biomedical research that shows how individuals can prevent diabetes, and countless translated diabetes prevention programs targeted to individuals and families to prevent the disease, the incidence of diabetes continues to rise. This dissertation argues that …

Effect Of Unplanned Urban Growth On Human Health And Sustainable Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Urban Growth Patterns In Nepal, Keshav Bhattarai Oct 2013

Effect Of Unplanned Urban Growth On Human Health And Sustainable Development: A Spatial Analysis Of The Urban Growth Patterns In Nepal, Keshav Bhattarai

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper first provides a spatial analysis of Nepal’s urban growth patterns from historical perspectives. Second, it geovisualizes urban morphologies of the Kathmandu metropolitan area using ESRI made CityEngine to display how unplanned concrete jungle would not only exert stresses on urban lives through increased heat waves and greenhouse gases, but also from increased urban vulnerabilities. Third, the paper analyzes urban sprawls and their unintended but irreversible environmental consequences on human health and sustainability. Fourth, it develops land use/cover metrics using remote sensing techniques to determine the ratio of built-in structures and open spaces. The ultimate goal of this paper …
