Since I Know Myself: A Cultural Examination Of Medicinal Plant Use In The Commonwealth Of Dominica, Maureen Meyer Sep 2014

Since I Know Myself: A Cultural Examination Of Medicinal Plant Use In The Commonwealth Of Dominica, Maureen Meyer

Geography ETDs

This research examines Dominican culture through exploring medicinal plant use on the island. Dominica, located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean Archipelago, offers a distinctive setting because historically there has been an amalgamation of cultures that have participated in and influenced the formation of Dominican culture. This research sought to identify what plants were known and used on the island in order to assess cultural retention and syncretism that has evolved as a result of the comingling of these cultures. In so doing, it was evident that environmental knowledge gained through experience has been critical for survival throughout Dominican …

My/Mi Lengua Franca: "Language," Manipulation, And Cultural Heritage In Chicana Art And Literature, Elena Avilés Sep 2014

My/Mi Lengua Franca: "Language," Manipulation, And Cultural Heritage In Chicana Art And Literature, Elena Avilés

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Chicana feminist literary and artistic cultural production since the second half of the twentieth century is characterized with a critical sensibility commissioning the arts to actively interrogate how cultural mores misconstrue female identity. By questioning the miss'-representation of cultural myths and images, Chicanas expose the patriarchal language and hegemonic discourse that code and sign cultural icons. Chicana feminist interrogations of traditional representations of La Malinche illustrate how signs are a construction, and thus, indefinite and plastic, like language. By combining various methodologies such as semiotics, visual analysis, cultural and feminist studies, this study underscores the significance of the development of …

Examining The Influence Of Landscape On Natural Resource Management In The American West: A Geospatial Approach, Robert Fonner Sep 2014

Examining The Influence Of Landscape On Natural Resource Management In The American West: A Geospatial Approach, Robert Fonner

Economics ETDs

Landscapes can influence natural resource values and management in a variety of ways. These diverse influences can be generated by biophysical or social systems, or interactions between systems. This dissertation examines the landscape determinants of natural resource values and management. Chapter 2 examines moose habitat preferences with a spatial discrete-choice model. The study tests for spatial autocorrelation and compares the results to results from nonspatial models. The objective of this analysis is to explore the human-based and naturally occurring determinants of moose habitat selection while presenting a method and example for addressing spatial correlation between spatially positioned alternatives in a …

Revisioning Reality: Normative Resistance In The Cultural Works Of The Lincoln Motion Picture Company, Nella Larsen, And Allan Rohan Crite, 1915-1945, Andrea Louise Mays Sep 2014

Revisioning Reality: Normative Resistance In The Cultural Works Of The Lincoln Motion Picture Company, Nella Larsen, And Allan Rohan Crite, 1915-1945, Andrea Louise Mays

American Studies ETDs

Despite the fact that nineteenth and twentieth century biologist and Social Darwinists theories of race have been dispelled, the social residue of white supremacist ideologies continue to have social and political implications throughout American society. America's racial hierarchy, and whiteness as a social and racial construct instantiated within it, against which every other group of people has been relationally situated, has helped not only to define non-white racial subjects in inferior terms, it has also guaranteed a perpetuation of race-based structural and social inequalities in United States of America. African American Studies, Critical Race Theory, Whiteness Studies, and most recently …

Mobilizing The Minority Vote: A Comparison Of Mobilization Methods And Examination Of Personal Characteristics Influencing Voter Turnout Among Minorities, Lisa Bryant Sep 2014

Mobilizing The Minority Vote: A Comparison Of Mobilization Methods And Examination Of Personal Characteristics Influencing Voter Turnout Among Minorities, Lisa Bryant

Political Science ETDs

This study explores the challenges of getting unlikely voters to the polls and mobilizing new citizens for participation in politics, focusing on racial and ethnic minorities, as well as naturalized citizens. Findings suggest that mobilization may not be a one-size-fits-all approach, as many campaigns assume, but rather that when engaging low-propensity voters, especially those who are unfamiliar with American political parties or the election process, additional factors such as co-ethnic contact and community may play a role. The findings are based on four field experiments conducted during the 2010 general election in four major urban areas in California. The field …

Criminal Authorities And The State: Gangs, Organized Crime, And Police In Brazil, Michael Wolff Sep 2014

Criminal Authorities And The State: Gangs, Organized Crime, And Police In Brazil, Michael Wolff

Political Science ETDs

Drug gangs and organized criminal groups rarely evolve into structured authorities governing their resident communities. Where this occurs, however, they may effectively replace the state in its most basic functions, and consequently exclude subject populations from the rights and protections supposedly guaranteed by the state. Employing qualitative research methods, this study compares criminal development and state public security policies in Rio de Janeiro and Recife, Brazil. The research is primarily concerned with the development of criminal authority structures, and asks when, where, why, and how they develop. Arguing that the extant literature on organized crime fails to adequately explain this …

Crime And Immigration In Albuquerque, Nm — Real Or Misperception?, Saundra D. Daras Sep 2014

Crime And Immigration In Albuquerque, Nm — Real Or Misperception?, Saundra D. Daras

Geography ETDs

The decade between 2000 and 2010 marked the largest increase of immigrant populations in U.S. history, however crime rates have seen a decrease during this same period. Recent research suggests that immigrant groups may actually be associated with this phenomenon. As immigration rates are expected to continue to grow in Albuquerque and the U.S., further research into the relationship between immigration and crime rates within historical destination cities (i.e. Los Angeles, New York) and new destination gateway cities, such as Albuquerque, is necessary. This study examines how violent and non-violent crime rates in immigrant neighborhoods compare to those of non-immigrant …

Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera Sep 2014

Remapping The U.S. "Southwest": Early Mexican American Literature And The Production Of Transnational Counterspaces, 1885-1958, Diana Noreen Rivera

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation brings to light a legacy of Mexican American spatial resilience that troubles Anglo-centric constructions of the Southwest, its history, and cultural formation as a byproduct of westward expansionism. This project argues that early Mexican American writers offer an alternative paradigm of transnationalism for understanding the literature, culture, and geography of the U.S. Southwest as it has been imagined in Anglo American cultural production about the region. For early Mexican American writers, the Southwest was not a quaint literary region but a space of historic transnational zones of contact, commerce, and cultural geography where they maintained degrees of agency. …

Building On The Past, Facing The Future: Renewing The Creative Economy Of New Mexico, Jeffrey Mitchell, Gillian Joyce

BBER Publications

The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs commissioned UNMs Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) to study the role of arts and cultural industries in the New Mexico (NM) economy. This study resulted in a report that reviews the economic impact of these 'creative' industries, discusses the challenges and opportunities they face, and concludes with policy recommendations. BBER researchers found that these industries employ over 43,000 persons in NM, pay $1.37 billion in wages and salaries, and generate $137.1 million in state and local government revenues. The study used a broad definition of 'arts and culture' to include persons …

The Role Of The E-Mentor In The Social Construction Of Knowledge In A Cross Cultural Learning Environment, Grace Faustino Jul 2014

The Role Of The E-Mentor In The Social Construction Of Knowledge In A Cross Cultural Learning Environment, Grace Faustino

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of e-mentoring and the role it plays in social construction of knowledge in online learning environments. Very little research that specifically focuses on the role of e-mentoring has been done. Both qualitative and quantitative research has shown that good mentoring programs can lead to greater productivity and satisfaction in the work place. However, most research on mentoring is focused on face to face traditional mentoring. E-mentoring offers the opportunity to mentor individuals in a virtual environment through synchronous and asynchronous computer mediated communication. This study looked at transcripts generated from …

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Venisa Martinez Jul 2014

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Venisa Martinez

American Studies ETDs

This study seeks to explain this curious and unknown connection of Albuquerque flamenco to Eva Encinias-Sandoval and the dance traditions of Nuevomexicanos. I seek to identify the history and social impact of this rich and distinct New Mexico flamenco tradition by tracing the development of Encinias-Sandoval's career and the establishment of her now world-class flamenco arts program, offered through the University of New Mexico's Dance and Theatre Department, as well as thorough affiliates and organizations of the National Institute of Flamenco. More specifically, my thesis describes how Eva Encinias-Sandoval built and continues to anchor this inspiring expressive art form in …

Bayard Taylor And His Transatlantic Representations Of Germany: A Nineteenth-Century American Encounter, John Kemp Jul 2014

Bayard Taylor And His Transatlantic Representations Of Germany: A Nineteenth-Century American Encounter, John Kemp

History ETDs

Bayard Taylor was a nineteenth-century American writer, traveler, lecturer, and diplomat well-known in his lifetime. Although active in many areas, he acquired fame chiefly through his adventures as a globetrotting news correspondent to exotic non-western regions at a time in which the United States was becoming aware of itself as a nation in a global context. In the process, his travels and representations of foreign lands contributed to the formation of nineteenth-century American national identity. Taylors American identity defined who he and his American readers were and also informed what and how he observed societies and cultures in his travel …

Hippies In The Park: Yosemite And The Counterculture In The Sixties American West, Guy Mcclellan Jul 2014

Hippies In The Park: Yosemite And The Counterculture In The Sixties American West, Guy Mcclellan

History ETDs

For many visitors, Yosemite's park boundaries symbolize a division between nature and civilization. On a busy day in Yosemite Valley, however, that divide seems nonexistent. Cars slither by, glinting in the sun. The valley echoes with camera clicks. Tourists stream into grocery stores and souvenir shops. The post office sorts mail and the dentist cleans teeth. In short, Yosemite Valley is little different than a small town. The American West is defined by wilderness but dominated by cities. Yosemite Valley, the park's population center, exemplifies the tension between the two. My research examines this ideological conflict through the lens of …

A Culinary Revolution: The First Celebrity Chef And The Unification Of French Culture, Lindsey Teel Jul 2014

A Culinary Revolution: The First Celebrity Chef And The Unification Of French Culture, Lindsey Teel

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw tremendous change and social upheaval in France. The monarchy was overthrown because of the French Revolution, a new system of government was being implemented and the country of France was starting to come together as one nation. Many different cultural aspects can be credited, but one in particular was the cuisine. Antonin Carême, the first celebrity chef, embodied Enlightenment ideals and believed that all people regardless of their status should have the ability to eat well. He challenged old cooking methods and techniques and presented France with a new cuisine that would …

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac Jul 2014

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac

Geography ETDs

This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

Beyond The Missions: Ethnogenesis In Colonial Paraguay, 1556-1700, Shawn Michael Austin Jul 2014

Beyond The Missions: Ethnogenesis In Colonial Paraguay, 1556-1700, Shawn Michael Austin

History ETDs

This dissertation argues that Guaraní socio-cultural practices determined what Spaniards could and could not do in colonial Paraguay. Beyond the Missions,' refers to colonial encounters outside the oft-romanticized Jesuit missions, especially within the provincial capital of Asunción. This research, therefore, complements the scholarship on the Jesuit missions by demonstrating that the Guaraní among the Spanish were just as influential as their counterparts in the missions in shaping the process by which they assumed new ethnic identities (or ethnogenesis) in Christian communities. Moreover, Guaraní social norms deeply influenced colonials and their institutions, including Blacks and the practice of African slavery. This …

Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril Jul 2014

Out Of Time: Temporal Colonization And The Writing Of Mexican American Subjectivity, Erin Murrah-Mandril

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation studies the ways that Mexican Americans experienced time as a colonizing force in the US Southwest between 1848 and 1940. I argue that Mexican American writing of this period exposes oppressive iterations of time within US modernity and often points toward possibilities of decolonizing time. The project focuses on political and economic constructions of US progress, which denied Mexican Americans presence within US temporal imaginings. My analysis moves from material to ideological temporal constructions as I analyze forms of time concerning wage labor, railroad operations, investment capitalism, judicial processes, congressional proceedings, Manifest Destiny, commodity fetishism, intellectual production, historical …

Beyond The Paint And Ink: Asar Oaxaca Resistance And Getting Up Arte Pal Pueblo, Mike L. Graham De La Rosa Jul 2014

Beyond The Paint And Ink: Asar Oaxaca Resistance And Getting Up Arte Pal Pueblo, Mike L. Graham De La Rosa

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis aims to address the ways in Oaxacan street artists frame alternative realities within art and interviews about their art. Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca or ASARO, is a revolutionary artist collective that currently works in Oaxaca Mexico. They place their art in publically accessible areas and comment on local, national and international social issues. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation with members of ASARO along with critical discourse analysis of their images, I explore the ways getting up is accomplished. The combination of ethnographic field work paired with a critical approach deepens an understanding of what influences …

Diversification And Adaptation In The Andes: Insights From Phylogeography, Malaria, And Hemoglobin Of The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Spencer C. Galen Jul 2014

Diversification And Adaptation In The Andes: Insights From Phylogeography, Malaria, And Hemoglobin Of The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Spencer C. Galen

Biology ETDs

The tropical Andes of South America represent a highly complex landscape characterized by physical barriers to dispersal and stark ecological gradients. The study of intraspecific genetic diversity in widespread Andean species has the potential to elucidate the historical biogeographic events that have driven diversification as well as the processes by which organisms have adapted to their environments in this region. The house wren (Troglodytes aedon) provides a convenient system for the study diversification and adaptation in the Andes, as it is distributed widely across both biogeographic barriers and heterogeneous environments. In chapter one, I utilize house wren and malaria parasite …

Living On The Edge: A Comparative Phylogeographic Study Of Refugial And Insular Fragmentation, Yadéeh Escobedo Sawyer Jul 2014

Living On The Edge: A Comparative Phylogeographic Study Of Refugial And Insular Fragmentation, Yadéeh Escobedo Sawyer

Biology ETDs

Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles resulted in population isolation that led to inter- and intra- specific genetic divergence in many North American species. The magnitude of isolation also influenced species response to these climatic changes and set the stage for contemporary gene flow. We can refine our understanding of species response to historical climate change by identifying regions of ice-free persistence and refugia during glacial maxima, and geographic locations and genetic dynamics of post-glacial secondary contact. This dissertation examines the role of glacial cover, geographic barriers, habitat fragmentation as a result of changes in sea level, and insularity on the contemporary genetic …

The County is interested in being more proactive and create a true link from the City of Albuquerque to the East Mountains …

Increasing The Supply Of Affordable Housing: Expanding Affordable Housing Policy In Albuquerque, Nm, Erin Callahan Jul 2014

Increasing The Supply Of Affordable Housing: Expanding Affordable Housing Policy In Albuquerque, Nm, Erin Callahan

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Providing affordable housing in the United States involves coordination between the federal, state, and local levels of government. Local jurisdictions must ensure that all requirements are met in order to receive funding. In Albuquerque, NM, this includes the production of a Consolidated Plan to satisfy federal requirements, and an Affordable Housing Plan to satisfy state requirements. However, even when the requirements are satisfied, the amount of funding available is never enough to create enough housing to meet the needs of the population. The objective of this study is to show how the supply of affordable housing in Albuquerque can be …
