Formalizing The Santa Fe Water Bank, Walker Williamson
Formalizing The Santa Fe Water Bank, Walker Williamson
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Water users depend on institutional flexibility to efficiently allocate water in legally constrained and overallocated basins. Adaptive market-based mechanisms such as water banking proffer flexibility and fairness, but often face practical challenges fueled by empirical and institutional uncertainties. The Santa Fe Water Bank is a case in point. The City of Santa Fe transfers agricultural water rights from the Middle Rio Grande to its municipal Water Bank for sustainable development. Combined uncertainties in this process can obscure latent changes in water balance and foster misunderstanding, potentially provoking transfer protests. This study develops a formal model clarifying the interrelated institutional and …

Composite Sustainability Indicator For The Conservation Of Ashigua Páramo: Integration Of Neutrosophic Logic And The Promethee Todim Method, Patricio Clavijo Cevallos
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The project was conducted in the Ashigua páramo, Mulaló, Latacunga, Cotopaxi province. Its objective was to develop a composite environmental sustainability indicator for the conservation of the páramo. Neutrosophic logic and the PRO-METHEE TODIM method were used to select and evaluate sub-indicators in a context of uncertain and complex envi-ronmental data. Neutrosophic logic facilitated the management of ambiguities and contradictions in the data. The find-ings highlighted the relevance of sub-indicators linked to carbon storage and ecological productivity. Indicators of regu-latory compliance and sustainable management were evaluated, emphasizing the importance of adjusting environmental policies to regulations and social expectations. This study …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: In the US, yersinosis was understood to predominantly occur in winter and among Black or African American infants and Asian children. Increased use of culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs) has led to marked increases in yersinosis diagnoses.
METHODS: We describe differences in the epidemiology of yersiniosis diagnosed by CIDT versus culture in 10 US sites, and identify determinants of health associated with diagnostic method.
RESULTS: Annual reported incidence increased from 0.3/100 000 in 2010 to 1.3/100 000 in 2021, particularly among adults ≥18 years, regardless of race and ethnicity, and during summer months. The proportion of CIDT-diagnosed infections increased from …
Longitudinal Spatial Trends In U.S. Pedestrian And Bicyclist Fatalities, Ossiris Rodriguez, Nicholas N. Ferenchak
Longitudinal Spatial Trends In U.S. Pedestrian And Bicyclist Fatalities, Ossiris Rodriguez, Nicholas N. Ferenchak
Civil Engineering ETDs
Between 2009 and 2022 in the United States (U.S.), pedestrian fatalities increased 82.3% and bicyclist fatalities increased 70.8%. Several studies have researched crash characteristics such as the people and roadways involved in these crashes. But where are these fatalities occurring within our regions and what spatial characteristics of these locations could be influencing this trend? We analyzed pedestrian and bicyclist fatality data from the last two decades using NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) in relation to built-environment and socio-economic characteristics (such as street network density, transit access, poverty, and educational attainment) obtained from the U.S. Census and the U.S. …
Agroecology And Soil Stewardship: Values And Techniques Of Smallholder Farmers In Bernalillo County, Stephanie Olivas
Agroecology And Soil Stewardship: Values And Techniques Of Smallholder Farmers In Bernalillo County, Stephanie Olivas
Geography ETDs
Agrarian movements around the world use agroecology to build sovereignty and steward dynamic ecosystems. Research has shown that agroecological farmers steward more resilient crops, more resilient soil biomes, and greater biodiversity than conventional agriculture. GIS and remote sensing offer many tools to detect the impacts of these farmers on the environment, but it is less clear how such technologies fit into agroecological goals. This study asks: what values, experiences and knowledge do smallholder producers in Bernalillo County embody in their soil stewardship practices? Also, what experience or knowledge do smallholder producers in Bernalillo County have about remote sensing, and would …
Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho
Variability In Large Mammal Activity Patterns When Visiting Water In New Mexico, Juan E. Camacho
Biology ETDs
Studying activity patterns of animals can provide vital information about how different species react to environmental changes, yet camera trap studies typically neglect the temporal aspect of the data. Using a 10-year camera trap dataset on Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, NM, we explored daily activity patterns when visiting water of five large mammal species. The species of study were mule deer, pronghorn, elk, oryx, and coyote. All species showed significant variability in activity patterns from site to site across the refuge. Within a site, differences in activity across years and seasons were less pronounced. Mule deer and coyote showed very …
A Weather Radar Analysis Of The Effects Of The Albuquerque Urban Area On Thunderstorms From 2001 To 2020, Alexandra Jane Vivier
A Weather Radar Analysis Of The Effects Of The Albuquerque Urban Area On Thunderstorms From 2001 To 2020, Alexandra Jane Vivier
Geography ETDs
Urban areas have been found to affect the atmosphere locally through changes in emissions, thermal properties, the addition of moisture, and changes in airflow patterns. This study assessed the relationship between urban areas in central New Mexico and thunderstorm intensity and duration between 2001 and 2020. Weather radar data was used to derive thunderstorm events, as it is well-suited to fast-changing thunderstorm conditions. Regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between developed land cover and thunderstorm intensity and duration, while controlling for factors such as elevation, aspect, and near-surface temperatures. It was found that developed land cover was statistically …

Leadership is a ceremony. All leaders need to envision a sense of purpose as the journey begins. I examined interactions among attitudes, perceptions, and decisions through Indigenous female leaders’ personally identified leadership styles and how to integrate Indigeneity for positive change in their environment. The purpose of this study was to help guide school leaders through initiating educational change and to give courage to Indigenous female leaders to continue to lead or step into leadership. In exploring these interactions, I examined Indigenous women’s leadership experiences, values, and beliefs. This study provided valuable insight to women of all ages, educators, school …
Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal
Crossing The Ocean: The Importance Of Gene Flow In Island Evolution, Ethan F. Gyllenhaal
Biology ETDs
Islands have long been a critical arena for the development of ecological and evolutionary theory, particular due to persistent open-water gaps between them. In this dissertation I demonstrates how these caps are permeable, which can be leveraged to understand evolution on islands and more broadly. The first chapter develops this connection between ongoing, overwater gene flow and island biogeographic theory, and tests it on an archipelago species. The second take a three-pronged approach in demonstrating how over-water gene flow can bias phylogenetic inference, and how many phylogeographic metrics in islands are likely shaped by long-term gene flow. The final two …

Theory Of Distances In Neutrogeometry, Erick González Caballero, Florentin Smarandache
Theory Of Distances In Neutrogeometry, Erick González Caballero, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
NeutroGeometry is one of the most recent approaches to geometry. In NeutroGeometry mod els, the main condition is to satisfy an axiom, definition, property, operator and so on, that is neither entirely true nor entirely false. When one of these concepts is not satisfied at all it is called AntiGeometry. One of the problems that this new theory has had is the scarcity of models. Another open problem is the definition of angle and distance measurements within the framework of NeutroGeometry. This paper aims to introduce a general theory of distance measures in any NeutroGeometry. We also present an algorithm …
Narratives Of Exile: Themes Of Displacement In Seghers, Duras, And Elio, Erin Consla
Narratives Of Exile: Themes Of Displacement In Seghers, Duras, And Elio, Erin Consla
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis examines identity, memory, and displacement in the exile narratives of Anna Seghers, Marguerite Duras, and María Luisa Elío. I argue that identity post-exile can be conceptualized as a continuous process of becoming, marked by a kaleidoscope of past, present, and future. Several aesthetic maneuvers such as the use of elements of form, memories of childhood, and palimpsest are shared by the chosen narratives, resulting in similar negotiations with identity. Through analysis of the authors' aesthetic focalizations, it becomes clear that their binary subject positions are modulated by the liminality and contradictions inherent in identity creation after exile. The …
The Descent Of Anolis: Assemblages, Convergence, And Ecomorphological Evolution, Christopher G. Anderson
The Descent Of Anolis: Assemblages, Convergence, And Ecomorphological Evolution, Christopher G. Anderson
Biology ETDs
The evolutionary outcomes we observe in modern organisms, particularly associations between phenotypes and environments, have been and remain an invaluable tool in interpreting the biological phenomena that shape our world. In the following chapters, I leverage a comprehensive phylogenetic and morphological dataset for 351 species comprising a diverse group of arboreal lizards, the Anolis clade, to explore how communities and morphologies evolve. First, I characterized patterns among coexisting lineages of Anolis to reveal a general pattern of phylogenetic relatedness among lineages comprising assemblages and identify differences attributable to a biogeographic variable. Then I examined the morphological consequences associated with the …
The Wyandot Of Anderdon Nation: Meaning-Making, Constructing, And Affirming Their Tribal Identities Through Archiving Historical Documents, Elizabeth Ann Berton Reilly
The Wyandot Of Anderdon Nation: Meaning-Making, Constructing, And Affirming Their Tribal Identities Through Archiving Historical Documents, Elizabeth Ann Berton Reilly
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This qualitative study examines how the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation makes meaning, constructs, and affirms their tribal identity. This tribe is a non-federally recognized community in Michigan.
This study employed an Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing framework, combining Critical Indigenous Research Methodology with a narrative one. I investigated how they preserve their language and culture and what that means to them. This led to an exploration into mixed-race Indigenous identities, how archiving and genealogical and tribal historical knowledge tie into creating and affirming personal identity.
This study demonstrated that there are many ways to be Wyandot and that each interviewee makes meaning, constructs, …
The Lying Woman: Avant-Garde Collaboration In Jo Harvey Allen's Alt-Country, Caitlin C. Grann
The Lying Woman: Avant-Garde Collaboration In Jo Harvey Allen's Alt-Country, Caitlin C. Grann
American Studies ETDs
Jo Harvey Allen is an artist, writer, and actress whose work is cited as transforming performance art in the 1980s. In this dissertation, I analyze the nature of Jo Harvey’s collaborative process, which spans over five decades, to better understand her positionality in avant-garde and alt-country genres. I argue that Jo Harvey’s collaboration is familial, gendered, and emplaced. My goal with this project is to intervene with literature on musicians and artists from West Texas, specifically Lubbock, through an expansion of the contributions of women. This dissertation is a product of my own collaborative efforts with Jo Harvey, as I …
Positioning Disability In Wilderness Space, Rebecca Hobart
Positioning Disability In Wilderness Space, Rebecca Hobart
Geography ETDs
This thesis examines the social construction of the disabled body in recreational wilderness space. A political ecology framework guides the research questions: What are the actual or perceived barriers to participation for differently abled hikers in wilderness recreational spaces, and how do these challenges manifest in long-distance hiking spaces? In situating Foucault’s theories of the body as shaped by power relations, this thesis asserts wilderness spaces to be privileged based on power conceptualized in normative notions of ability. 44 participants who self-identified as wilderness recreationalists with a disability and/or chronic health illness completed this study’s mixed-method questionnaire. Themes around practices, …

Heat Mitigation Impacts Of Agriculture, Greenspace, And Riparian Forest In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brennan Davis
Heat Mitigation Impacts Of Agriculture, Greenspace, And Riparian Forest In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brennan Davis
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Albuquerque, New Mexico, alongside the larger American desert Southwest, is already living the reality of climate change – temperatures have risen faster than the global average and, left unchecked, will continue to rise at an ever-increasing pace (NOAA 2022, Garfin et al. 2014). Alongside this disproportionate warming, the Southwest has experienced worsening drought which further stresses an already arid system (White et al. 2023, Dunbar et al. 2022). At the intersection of these changes lie a myriad of interrelated consequences for both ecosystems and communities. The urban heat island effect is one of many such consequences and is responsible for …
Missing Middle Housing: Accelerating America’S Transition From Single-Family Zoning, Lena Zeebuyth, Mallory Moore
Missing Middle Housing: Accelerating America’S Transition From Single-Family Zoning, Lena Zeebuyth, Mallory Moore
Natural Resources Journal
As housing unaffordability and climate change impose increasingly greater costs on American cities and towns, there is a growing sense that single-family residential zoning ordinances are partly to blame for these challenges. Many Americans remain unwilling to address these difficulties by welcoming large apartment buildings into their neighborhoods. Fortunately, policies designed to promote “middle housing” development––visually attractive duplexes and townhome projects––tend to be more politically feasible than policies that drive apartment development. Further, such policies do much to improve the affordability and environmental sustainability of residential neighborhoods. This Article describes how promoting greater middle housing development in the United States …
