Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Fetal alcohol exposure poses a significant social problem. Conservative rates of Fetal alcohol syndrome and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND) together have been estimated at 9.1/1000 live births (Sampson 1997). Prenatal ethanol exposure can produce subtle learning disabilities in children, which may not become apparent until a child is school-aged and can occur in the absence of other physical evidence of alcohol-related birth defects. Along with cognitive deficits, ARND has been associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been linked to polymorphisms in the Brian Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) …
Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara
Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
The two main ethnocentric proposals for a federal structure –9 ethnic enclaves [CPN (M)] and the 1000 KM long east-west narrow corridor(s) [e.g., Madhesi parties’ demand for a single Terai state] as state(s)— are the two formal proposals that have drawn much attention of the lawmakers. Many, including this author, are of the view that the restructuring of the state needs to go beyond the cultural sentiment to incorporate many other issues such as: ecological interdependence, economy of scale, ethnic harmony, and comparative resource endowments. To that end, a cooperative federal structure proposed here takes the twelve ethnic regional enclaves …

The Sapello River was the subject of an intensive three week study by the Water Resources 573, Field Methods class from the University of New Mexico in May and June, 2008. The main objective of the study was to conduct a stream assessment of the Sapello River that will serve as a baseline for future work.
Rural Sustainability Using Rainwater Harvesting: From Rainwater To Tap Water In Alto, New Mexico, Christina Humphries
Rural Sustainability Using Rainwater Harvesting: From Rainwater To Tap Water In Alto, New Mexico, Christina Humphries
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Rainwater harvesting is the capture and use of rainwater that falls in a particular place. Although shown by archeologists and paleohydrologists to be a frequent use of water in the past, rainwater harvesting began to decrease, except in very rural areas, once well production and municipal utilities began to supply reliable volumes of water. As our population grows in the southwestern United States and water availability becomes diminished, rainwater harvesting is once again appearing as a viable technology. Although several southwestern states including Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico are beginning to incorporate rainwater harvesting systems into planning procedures, statewide regulations …

Pilot Study: Evaluation Of Changes In Depressive Symptoms After One Year In Patients With Refractory Epilepsy Treated With Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Leah Enright, Sarah Mcginn, Alya Reeve
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Depression is a major co-morbid condition with epilepsy, and has been found to be the single largest determinant of health-related quality of life in patients with epilepsy, even greater than seizure frequency and severity. Several studies have looked at the changes in symptoms of depression in patient treated with Vagus Nerve Stimulation for epilepsy. However, these studies have had some major limitations, including that they relied on scales designed to measure severity of depression in a population of clinically depressed patients instead of a scale that measures depressive symptoms in a community population, and that they measured changes in symptoms …
Gender-Based Differences In Counseling Time In A Community Health Worker, Joel Berger, Angelo Tomedi, Jodi Casados, Vanessa Jacobsohn
Gender-Based Differences In Counseling Time In A Community Health Worker, Joel Berger, Angelo Tomedi, Jodi Casados, Vanessa Jacobsohn
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Smoking represents a serious public health burden that crosses gender, racial, and socioeconomic lines. Although the majority of smoking cessation counseling traditionally occurs in the setting of a Primary Care Providers office, clinicians often lack the necessary time and/or cultural and language skills to provide adequate help to smokers prepared to quit. A Community Health Worker (CHW) smoking cessation project utilizing CHWs in San Diego, CA evaluated by Woodruff, et al effectively increased patient's abstinence rates in the intervention group. A similar project undertaken by the University of New Mexico Department of Family and Community Medicine employed bilingual CHWs to …

El Dia De Los Muertos, The Death And Rebirth Of The Environment Movement, Eileen Gauna
El Dia De Los Muertos, The Death And Rebirth Of The Environment Movement, Eileen Gauna
Faculty Scholarship
In 2004, in response to an article titled Death of Environmentalism, many in the environmental community engaged in a debate about whether the environmental movement was capable of adequately inspiring the public to effectively respond to climate change. This Article examines the strand of this debate that centered upon responses from environmental justice actors to the larger environmental community. Specifically, the ensuing conversations raised questions about who, precisely, is the environmental community, what is its historical legacy, how should the environment be conceptualized to promote more effective climate policy, the role of technocratic solutions, and the need for transformative coalition …

Annual Report Of The University, 2007-2008, Volumes 1-6, University Of New Mexico
UNM Annual Reports
Project Summary and Goals Historically, affirmative action policies have evolved from initial programs aimed at providing equal educational opportunities to all students, to the legitimacy of programs that are aimed at achieving diversity in higher education. In June 2003, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action pushed higher education across the threshold toward creating a new paradigm for diversity in the 21 51 century. The court clearly stale that affirmative action is still viable but that our institutions must reconsider our traditional concepts for building diversity in the next few decades. This shift in historical context of diversity in …

The Transition From Unincorporated Community To Municipality In The South Valley, Joshua M. Akers

The report consists of three parts: a historical review of incorporation in New Mexico and the Southwestern United States; an examination of geographical, social and political issues unique to …
