Cost Comparison Of Perchlorate Treatment Options, Emma O. Nolan Feb 2008

Cost Comparison Of Perchlorate Treatment Options, Emma O. Nolan

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is used as an oxidizer for rocket fuel, fireworks, matches, air bags, and other mechanisms requiring enhanced explosions. Because perchlorate is extremely hydrophilic, it leaches into ground water and is eventually found in drinking water supplies. Public health is the primary reason agencies regulate perchlorate. Severe effects of perchlorate ingestion are hypothyroidism, goiter, and aplastic anemia. The objectives of this study were isolate areas of perchlorate occurrence and compare costs of government sanctioned compliance methods. Two removal strategies meet the best available technology (BAT) criteria for perchlorate, single pass ion exchange and biological fluidized bed reactor. The …

Cooperative Roles Of Geographic Information Science In Identifying Boundary Uncertainty : A Case Study In The Bureau Of Land Management's Manzano Wilderness Study Area, Kathleen Hawkos

Geography ETDs

Advances in the development and accuracy of Geographic Information Science (GIS) in concert with the rapid development of advanced microprocessors and computer software have resulted in widely available survey data. No longer held captive by the discipline of surveying, this data is currently being used by geographers, cartographers, municipal planners and realtors for display and reproduction. Surveying provides the physical and legal basis for boundary delineation while GIS provides the tools to readily yield information from spatial data, and to economically conduct analyses enabling a more comprehensive understanding of boundary issues. A case study in the Bureau of Land Managements …

A French Trying To Understand American Football, Pierre-Yves Barbeau Jan 2008

A French Trying To Understand American Football, Pierre-Yves Barbeau

Best Student Essays

Most students who attend UNM have grown up with American culture, so the perspective of someone to whom American culture is fresh can be both entertaining and enlightening. It affirms the value of a part of our university, a part whose usage of English is at times unique, and whose adventures here are perhaps too brief. Latinas/Os' And The Politics Of Knowledge Production: Latcrit Scholarship And Academic Activism As Social Justice Action, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, Professors Montoya and Valdes examine various ways of developing Latina/o legal studies in the United States. As background, they first outline and examine the three main models of knowledge-production established within legal academia during the past century or so: 1) the traditional or imperial model; 2) the safe-space or vanguard model, and; 3) the big-tent or democratic model. Using this historical template to contextualize current efforts in Latina/o legal studies both substantively and methodologically, they next review the record of LatCrit theorists over the past dozen years. With this analytical framework in place, they situate the LatCrit …
