Heritage Conservation In Nepal: Policies, Stakeholders And Challenges, Neel Kamal Chapagain

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Introduction of Ancient Monuments Preservation Act in 2013 B.S. (1956 AD) marked the provision of modern concept of heritage conservation in Nepal. UNESCOs mission to restore the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar in the 1970s was the first major international assistance for heritage conservation in Nepal. The enlisting of seven different sites from Kathmandu valley including 3 Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath, Bouddha, Changu Narayan and Swoyambhu in the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites brought Nepal to international attention in heritage conservation arena. Along with nature conservation and biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage conservation has been of interest to many national and international agencies. It is …

The Limits Of Success? Ngos, Microfinance And Economic Development In Pakistans Northern Areas', Feisal Khan

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

For its advocates, microfinance has become a near-panacea for ensuring that the poor of the developing world would benefit from growth and development. In short, microfinance would ensure that trickle down would actually trickle down. Microfinance became more than 'just' a policy option when its staunchest proponent spoke of it in moral and social justice terms: Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel laureate founder of Bangladesh's Grameen Bank, declared access to credit as a basic human right. One of the world's largest and most successful rural development Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) is the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), operating since 1982 in …

"We Are All Israelis": The Politics Of Colonial Comparisons, Alex Lubin

American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, Americans sought to understand how threats from afar would alter everyday life within the boundaries of the nation. As they mourned and made sense of the tragedy, some turned to a comparison in order to give the moment its full weight. Chicago Rabbi Gary Gerson, who played a public role on television and in newspapers, attempted to help people cope with fear and death: "Humanity came apart in lower Manhattan today, and each of us is wounded. We mourn the loss of our innocence. …

Speaking The Right Language: The Scientific Method As A Framework For A Continuous Quality Improvement Program Within Academic Medical Research Compliance Units, Kurt B. Nolte, Douglas M. Stewart, Kevin C. O'Hair, William L. Gannon, Michael S. Briggs, A Marie Barron, Judy Pointer, Richard S. Larson

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The authors developed a novel continuous quality improvement (CQI) process for academic biomedical research compliance administration. A challenge in developing a quality improvement program in a nonbusiness environment is that the terminology and processes are often foreign. Rather than training staff in an existing quality improvement process, the authors opted to develop a novel process based on the scientific method--a paradigm familiar to all team members. The CQI process included our research compliance units. Unit leaders identified problems in compliance administration where a resolution would have a positive impact and which could be resolved or improved with current resources. They …

South Valley Incorporation Feasibility Study (Revised), Lee A. Reynis, Molly J. Bleecker

BBER Publications

Determining the financial feasibility of a South Valley municipality requires developing estimates of the revenues that might be raised, and this in turn requires a careful reading of NM statutes to see what the city may be entitled to and what authority it has under state law, as well as estimating the tax bases and the levels of activity against which fees and charges for services will be assessed. It is also critical to determine how much it will cost to provide various municipal services to the South Valley. This study focuses on the costs and revenues associated with operating …

Minimally Invasive Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers Array For Biomedical Applications, Xiaoyang Cheng Sep 2008

Minimally Invasive Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers Array For Biomedical Applications, Xiaoyang Cheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Ultrasound covers a broad range of applications from underwater exploration and nondestructive evaluation of materials to medical diagnosis and treatment. The ultrasonic transducer plays an important role in determining the resolution, sensitivity, as well as other critical diagnostic capabilities of an ultrasonic detection or imaging system. Currently piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers dominate the market. The device performance of the piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer in medical applications is limited by the material properties and related electrical and acoustic impedance match issues. The fabrication of piezoelectric transducer array requires meticulous handcrafting. It is difficult and expensive to fabricate densely populated piezoelectric array. The Capacitive …

Attachment And Bonding: Correlations Between Relationship And Anxiety Among Adult College Students, Ellen Witter Armbruster

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

This study investigated the relationships between adult attachment style, memories of early bonding experiences, and five different types of anxiety. The participants were 201 undergraduate psychology students, whose attachment styles, early bonding memories, and tendency toward the five anxiety types were measured through the use of self-report instruments. Analyses were performed to address the three research questions: 1) What is the relationship between attachment style and quality of early interactions with caregivers?; 2) What is the relationship between tendency toward specific types of anxiety and attachment style?; and 3) What is the relationship between tendency toward specific types of anxiety …

Is A Chest Tube Necessary Prior To Air Medical Transport Of Patients With Pneumothorax?, Gregory Pirkl, Darren Braude Aug 2008

Is A Chest Tube Necessary Prior To Air Medical Transport Of Patients With Pneumothorax?, Gregory Pirkl, Darren Braude

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Objective: It is conventionally thought that patients with pneumothoraces (PTX) require tube thoracostomy prior to air medical transport (AMT), especially in un-pressurized rotor-wing aircraft, to prevent deterioration from expansion of the pneumothorax and possible development of tension pneumothorax. We hypothesized that patients with pneumothorax(ces) transported without prior tube thoracostomy tolerate AMT without serious deterioration. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-series of trauma patients transported via helicopter with radiographically confirmed PTX between September 2002 and September 2005. Charts were evaluated for signs of deterioration including hypotension, hypoxemia, respiratory distress, intubation, needle thoracostomy or cardiac arrest during transport. In addition, duration of …

Identification Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Docking Sites In Enzymes That Metabolize Phosphatidylinositols And Inositol Phosphates, Marcos Sosa, Kevin Caldwell, Colin Buckley Aug 2008

Identification Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Docking Sites In Enzymes That Metabolize Phosphatidylinositols And Inositol Phosphates, Marcos Sosa, Kevin Caldwell, Colin Buckley

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Background: Reversible interactions between the components of cellular signaling pathways allow for the formation and dissociation of multimolecular complexes with spatial and temporal resolution and, thus, are an important means of integrating multiple signals into a coordinated cellular response. Several mechanisms that underlie these interactions have been identified, including the recognition of specific docking sites, termed a D-domain and FXFP motif, on proteins that bind mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). We recently found that phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C-γ1 (PLC-γ1) directly binds to extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (ERK2), a MAPK, via a D-domain-dependent mechanism. In addition, we identified D-domain sequences in several other …

Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross Aug 2008

Oil And Gas Projects In The Western Amazon: Threats To Wilderness, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Peoples, Matt Finer, Clinton N. Jenkins, Stuart L. Pimm, Brian Keane, Carl Ross

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

The western Amazon is the most biologically rich part of the Amazon basin and is home to a great diversity of indigenous ethnic groups, including some of the worlds last uncontacted peoples living in voluntary isolation. Unlike the eastern Brazilian Amazon, it is still a largely intact ecosystem. Underlying this landscape are large reserves of oil and gas, many yet untapped. The growing global demand is leading to unprecedented exploration and development in the region. Without improved policies, the increasing scope and magnitude of planned extraction means that environmental and social impacts are likely to intensify. We review the most …
