Restorative Justice In Traditional Pre-Colonial 'Criminal Justice Systems' In Kenya, Sarah Kinyanjui Jan 2009

Restorative Justice In Traditional Pre-Colonial 'Criminal Justice Systems' In Kenya, Sarah Kinyanjui

Tribal Law Journal

Traditional African communities are often said to have embraced restorative values in resolving conflicts and responding to wrongdoing. Through empirical research and analysis of secondary data on the pre-colonial traditional Kamba, Kikuyu and Meru communities in Kenya, this article illustrates how penal practices in these communities embraced restorative justice as understood today. This genealogy of restorative justice in these communities demonstrates the potential of restorative justice as an intervention in crime and its role in meeting overall community goals. By doing so, the genealogy challenges the objectification of retributive justice in modern criminal justice systems, which renders retributive practices as …

Latina/Os' And Latina/O Legal Studies: A Critical And Self-Critical Review Of Latcrit Theory And Legal Models Of Knowledge Production, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes

Faculty Scholarship

For the twelfth time in as many years, the LatCrit community convened its annual conference to underscore the importance of location and locality in the work that we do. The conference theme's framing around Critical Localities: Epistemic Communities, Rooted Cosmopolitans and Knowledge Processes not only focused our collective attention on questions of epistemic community and intellectual (as well as physical) location, but also invited reflection on the meanings we inscribe onto the positions we elect to stake out for ourselves and our work in light of the options and traditions that serve as background. The "Critical Localities" theme invites an …

Modeling Capture Zones To Determine Potential Threats To The Public Water Supply Wells, Jordan Wollak Dec 2008

Modeling Capture Zones To Determine Potential Threats To The Public Water Supply Wells, Jordan Wollak

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority uses groundwater wells to provide drinking water to the residents of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Proper management is needed to ensure that the residents have safe drinking water. This study focuses on a particular water distribution trunk of the Albuquerque Water System. Ridgecrest Trunk wells provide approximately 20 percent of the water for Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, throughout the area there are numerous sites that have known releases of hazardous materials that have contaminated soil and groundwater. Mapping sites that have known soil or groundwater contamination is useful to determine the proximity of …

Evaluating Descriptive Richness In Collection-Level Metadata, Oksana L. Zavalina, Carole L. Palmer, Amy S. Jackson, Myung-Ja Han

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

When many collections are brought together in a federation or aggregation, the attributes of the original collections can become difficult to discern. Collection-level metadata has the potential to provide important context about the purpose and features of individual collections, but the qualitative aspects of collections are difficult to describe in a systematic way. This paper reports on a content analysis of collection records in the Digital Collections and Content (DCC) aggregation, conducted to analyze the kinds of substantive and purposeful information represented across 202 cultural heritage collections. We found that the free-text Description field often provides more accurate and complete …

A Hierarchical Group Model For Programming Sensor Networks, James Horey Dec 2008

A Hierarchical Group Model For Programming Sensor Networks, James Horey

Computer Science ETDs

A hierarchical group model that decouples computation from hardware can characterize and aid in the construction of sensor network software with minimal overhead. Future sensor network applications will move beyond static, homogeneous deployments to include dynamic, heterogeneous elements. These sensor networks will also gain new users, including casual users who will expect intuitive interfaces to interact with sensor networks. To address these challenges, a new computational model and a system implementing the model are presented. This model ensures that computations can be readily reassigned as sensor nodes are introduced or removed. The model includes methods for communication to accommodate these …

Altered Expression Of Genes Involved In Gabaergic Transmission And Neuromodulation Of Granule Cell Activity In The Cerebellum Of Schizophrenia Patients, Karen Cardon, W. Michael Bullock, Juan Bustillo, Rosalinda Roberts, Nora Perrone-Bizzozero Oct 2008

Altered Expression Of Genes Involved In Gabaergic Transmission And Neuromodulation Of Granule Cell Activity In The Cerebellum Of Schizophrenia Patients, Karen Cardon, W. Michael Bullock, Juan Bustillo, Rosalinda Roberts, Nora Perrone-Bizzozero

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Objective: Deficits in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling have been described in the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and cerebellum in individuals with schizophrenia. The purpose of the present study was to further investigate cerebellar gene expression alterations as they relate to decreases in GABAergic transmission by examining the expression of GABAergic markers, N-methyl-D-aspartic- acid (NMDA) receptor subunits, and cerebellum neuromodulators in individuals with schizophrenia. Method: Subjects were postmortem men with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (N=13) and a postmortem intervalmatched non-psychiatric male comparison group (N=13). The authors utilized real-time-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to measure mRNA levels of the fol lowing GABAergic …
