Dairies In New Mexico: The Environmental Implications Of A New Industry, Denise D. Fort, Anthony Edwards

Faculty Scholarship

The dairy industry, at first blush, might seem to be an odd growth industry for New Mexico, but the last decade has seen an extraordinary expansion of the industry in the state. The presence of the industry has consequences for the state in several domains, including water quantity and water quality, as well as economics, animal welfare and state finances. This article is an attempt to characterize these implications for water policy and to solicit insights from those who are familiar with the industry.

Nutrient Criteria Recommendations For Eutrophication Management Of New Mexico Reservoirs, Heidi R. Henderson May 2009

Nutrient Criteria Recommendations For Eutrophication Management Of New Mexico Reservoirs, Heidi R. Henderson

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Many of the lakes and reservoirs in the world are adversely affected by eutrophication. In order to counter this trend, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEP A) had developed numeric nutrient criteria for use by the States and Tribes. The USEP A has based their criteria on Level III ecoregions and their aggregated ecoregions. This project seeks to determine the validity of using these USEP A recommendations in the State of New Mexico to replace the State's current narrative nutrient criteria. This project will also offer nutrient criteria recommendations for four criteria variables: total nitrogen, total phosphorus, Secchi depth, and …

Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter May 2009

Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Effective and affordable arsenic removal from drinking water has become a significant issue recently. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has promulgated a new maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic in drinking water which will take effect in January 2004. The current arsenic MCL of 50 micrograms per liter (ugll) was set by the United sates Public Health Service in 1943 and has not been reduced in nearly 60 years. Arsenic has been linked to various types of cancers, prompting EPA to change the standard. Due to the fact many water systems, especially small water utilities serving less than …

Effects Of Bovine Exclosure Fencing On Water Quality And Vegetative Conditions,Bluewater Creek, New Mexico., Darrell Kundargi May 2009

Effects Of Bovine Exclosure Fencing On Water Quality And Vegetative Conditions,Bluewater Creek, New Mexico., Darrell Kundargi

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Livestock grazing can have a profound effect on water quality and vegetation of riparian ecosystems. In this study, the impacts of livestock grazing on surface water quality and vegetation was investigated along Bluewater Creek in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico. The impacts of grazing were studied by comparing three areas enclosed with bovine fencing in 2003 against unenclosed adjacent areas. A section free of grazing since the 1980s served as a reference area. Sampling sites were further stratified by the dominant geomorphology of incised and stable stream banks. Surface water temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, N03--N + …

Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd May 2009

Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and one of the most biologically and culturally diverse nations on the planet. One of the last true stone age people, they are struggling with the delicate balance of entering the 21st century without losing their unique cultural heritage or devastating the fragile ecosystem they have lived in harmony with for thousands of years. Slow, careful steps are needed in order to ensure sustainable development; however the hardships of living close to nature - disease, drought, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services, are causing Papua New …

The Effects Of Stream Discharge And Channelization On The Macroinvertebrate Community In A Semi-Arid Landscape, Thomas L. Kennedy May 2009

The Effects Of Stream Discharge And Channelization On The Macroinvertebrate Community In A Semi-Arid Landscape, Thomas L. Kennedy

Biology ETDs

The Middle Rio Grande is the second largest watershed in the southwestern United States and is a vitally important component for the biodiversity in the region. Similar to many other rivers, the MRG is a temporally dynamic system that unfortunately, has been subjected to river regulation. As a result, the river has become channelised in many reaches disconnecting it from the surrounding floodplain. The effects of river regulation on the MRG and its surrounding riparian zone were largely unknown. I tested three main hypothesis with regards to the macroinvertebrates in the MRG: 1) Does flow variability structure the aquatic macroinvertebrate …

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell May 2009

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell

Biology ETDs

Community wide molecular surveys have revealed incredible hidden phylogenetic and metabolic diversity in microbial habitats. We have conducted the first microbial survey of Yellowstone National Park thermal environments, sampling 103 communities from across the park and across the range of conditions found. Yellowstone is particularly suited for this type of research because of the large number and wide variety of thermal springs, which are naturally occurring chemostats enabling examination of the factors that control microbes and drive community structure. In addition to samples for molecular microbial analysis, we collected water for extensive geochemical analysis in order to begin to deduce …

Ecological Constraints And Life History Tradeoffs Among Human Foragers And Their Prey, Oskar Burger May 2009

Ecological Constraints And Life History Tradeoffs Among Human Foragers And Their Prey, Oskar Burger

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation attempts to identify ecological relationships useful for understanding large-scale patterns in human-environment interaction that can be applied to archaeological studies. It uses three established bodies of theory to understand ecological constraints and life history tradeoffs, applying the same basic framework to human adaptations and the demographic trends of other mammals. First, a model from optimal foraging theory (the marginal value theorem), which posits a tradeoff between resource availability and resource processing, is applied to zooarchaeology to understand human butchery patterns. Humans tend to butcher prey according to the predictions of the model in both ethnographic and archaeological settings: …

The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin May 2009

The Biological Evidence Of The San-Pau-Chu People And Their Affinities, Hsiu-Man Lin

Anthropology ETDs

Austronesian is one of the major language groups spoken. It is believed that Taiwan, Indonesian (east of Wallace line), or Bismarck Archipelago is the starting point for Austronesian migrations. It is also suggested that prehistoric cultures of Taiwan were established by the ancestors of the modern Taiwanese indigenous populations, who are also Austronesian speakers. The goals of this project are to estimate biological relationships of the San-Pau-Chu (SPC) to other Asian populations (especially Polynesians) and to evaluate if Taiwan indeed plays a major role in the history of Austronesian migrations by using both dental morphological data (metric and nonmetric dental …

Role Of Mmps And Timp-3 In Neuronal Death And White Matter Injury Following Transient Global Ischemia, Espen Jacob Walker May 2009

Role Of Mmps And Timp-3 In Neuronal Death And White Matter Injury Following Transient Global Ischemia, Espen Jacob Walker

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Transient global ischemia to the mouse results in hypoxic hypoperfusion to the brain and can lead to regional vulnerability, inflammation, and cell death. Characterization of this model with varying occlusion and reperfusion times allowed us to provide evidence for a consistent injury to the hippocampus and white matter regions of the brain. Following 30 minutes of bilateral carotid artery occlusion (BCAO) and 7 days of reperfusion, hippocampal injury to the CA2 region was consistently identified with neuronal loss and fluorojade positive cells. Three days following reperfusion, white matter injury was demonstrated by increased astrocyte reactivity and oligodendrocyte loss. With a …

Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater In Albuquerque's South Valley: Is Monitored Natural Attenuation An Appropriate Strategy?, Christina L. Keleher Apr 2009

Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater In Albuquerque's South Valley: Is Monitored Natural Attenuation An Appropriate Strategy?, Christina L. Keleher

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Nitrate-contaminated groundwater in the South Valley of Albuquerque has been documented since the early 1960s. Over the past four decades, nitrate concentrations have declined, but are still significantly greater than the groundwater standard of 10 mg/L. In 1980, a case of methemoglobinemia in an infant prompted the city to extend city water lines into the residential areas of Mountain View, where residents were previously dependent upon private domestic wells for drinking water. Although the nitrate-contaminated water no longer presents a human health threat to the residents of Mountain View, all groundwater in New Mexico that contains less than 10,000 mg/L …
