Who Pollutes? – Household Solid Waste Management Problem In Kathmandu, Nepal, Menuka Karki

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper estimates the impact of household characteristics on waste disposal choices. Waste disposal choices are: (1) Burning/Dumping (2) Collection and (3) Composting. The analysis shows that urban household prefer less composting and more collection which involve no waste processing and it attributes to the environmental degradation. However, education does not seem to influence waste disposal choices. Easy access to public transportation like bus stop increases environmental quality, which can be a recommended as a policy to decrease environment degradation.

Agricultural Policy And Its Impacts In Rural Economy In Nepal, Rajendra Poudel Oct 2011

Agricultural Policy And Its Impacts In Rural Economy In Nepal, Rajendra Poudel

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Nepal is considered a high population density developing country and a very high population density per unit of agriculture land. Comparative analysis with the region shows that the Bangladesh and Nepal have the lowest land to labor ratio (0.22 and 0.29 respectively), compared to India (0.61), Sri Lanka (0.51) and Pakistan (0.81). Small holding size of high land fragmentation in Nepal is one of the main reported causes of poverty in rural area. Nepal combines the status of least developed country, landlocked position between two giant protectionist countries (India and China), with attached castes system, armed conflict since 2002, very …

How To Make Market-Based Policy Instruments Effective?, Keshav Bhattarai

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of MBIs to regulate ES at various topographic regions of Nepal through the integration of both natural science and economic elements within the geographic information systems (GIS) framework. It attempts to develop a land production model based on location-specific spatial and temporal factors taking into account the primary ‘supporting services’ (e.g. soil formation) to ‘provisioning’ (e.g. food production), ‘regulating’ (e.g. climate) and ‘cultural’ (e.g. recreation) services which are the building blocks of ES.

A Watershed Conservation Success Story In Nepal: Land Use Changes Over 30 Years, Bill Fleming, Jeanie Fleming Oct 2011

A Watershed Conservation Success Story In Nepal: Land Use Changes Over 30 Years, Bill Fleming, Jeanie Fleming

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In the middle hill region of west central Nepal in 1977, a quarter of a 113 km2 watershed experienced erosion rates exceeding 30 Mt/ha/yr due to high rainfall intensities, unstable soils, steep slopes and severe overgrazing. This increasing land degradation coupled with indiscriminate forest harvesting threatened the survival of forests and viable pasture lands. However, an innovative national government policy of handing over forest management to local people was put in place over the next three decades, resulting in conversion of nearly all the eroded grazing and shrub land to managed pasture and forest, a five-fold increase in grass and …

Renewable Energy Best Practices In Promotion And Use For Latin America And The Caribbean, Andrea Luecke

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

According to the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), the number of countries with policies directed at promoting renewable energy has doubled over the past five years (REN21, 2011. The United States, along with European and Asian countries, is actively promoting renewable energy to catalyze and achieve profound economic and environmental changes. By contrast, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have been slow to adopt renewable energy because of poverty, lack of awareness, and lack of government support to mitigate climate change, stabilize energy supplies, or invest in innovation (UN Industrial Development Organization, 2011). …

Characterization, Modeling, And Simulation Of Multiscale Directed-Assembly Systems, Ryan Molecke Sep 2011

Characterization, Modeling, And Simulation Of Multiscale Directed-Assembly Systems, Ryan Molecke

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nanoscience is a rapidly developing field at the nexus of all physical sciences which holds the potential for mankind to gain a new level of control of matter over matter and energy altogether. Directed-assembly is an emerging field within nanoscience in which non-equilibrium system dynamics are controlled to produce scalable, arbitrarily complex and interconnected multi-layered structures with custom chemical, biologically or environmentally-responsive, electronic, or optical properties. We construct mathematical models and interpret data from direct-assembly experiments via application and augmentation of classical and contemporary physics, biology, and chemistry methods. Crystal growth, protein pathway mapping, LASER tweezers optical trapping, and colloid …

Curated Exhibit: Artistry Of Bookplates, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

The Artistry of Bookplates exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, explored the history and artistic development of bookplates as markers of ownership in books. From early armorial designs to more modern forms influenced by allegorical figures and printing techniques, bookplates have evolved alongside the history of printing. The exhibit featured examples from the Health Sciences Library's general and special collections, as well as reproductions of medical or health-related bookplates. It highlighted the aesthetic and historical significance of bookplates, demonstrating how they reflect both personal ownership and cultural trends. September 7, 2011 - August 30, 2012

Expressions Of Another Center: Borderlands Visual Theory & The Art Of Luis Jimenez, Eric Tomás Hernández Castillo Aug 2011

Expressions Of Another Center: Borderlands Visual Theory & The Art Of Luis Jimenez, Eric Tomás Hernández Castillo

American Studies ETDs

An artist who constantly challenged various social and political boundaries, Jimenez and his art contribute to a growing discourse about U.S. sculpture and 21st century American art. By combining various methodologies such as formal analysis, visual analysis, and critical biography, I will underscore the significance of Luis Jimenez's art in 21st century American art. Jimenez's art functions autobiographically particular moment in his life affected his art in many ways. His time in Mexico City, New York, and Rome are a few pivotal moments that shifted the focus of his art and encouraged him to return to the Southwest where his …

Los Tres Grandes - Herman Gallegos, Ernesto Galarza, Julian Samora: Rooted In Community, Guided By Friendship, Cultivating Leadership., Carmen R. Samora

American Studies ETDs

Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. At a time when foundations earmarked minority support primarily for African Americans, Los …

Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther Aug 2011

Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther

Psychology ETDs

Modified versions of the original Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training paradigm (DRIFT; Guinther & Dougher, 2010) were used to engineer semantic false memories and contextually-controlled semantic false memories in group data. Experiment I replicated and extended the original DRIFT paradigm by showing that interrelated conditional discrimination training (match-to-sample; MTS) could influence subsequent false recall even in the absence of tests of symmetry and transitivity. It was also found that false recall was especially likely among those participants whose self reports indicated awareness that the study list words shared a common conditionally discriminative function. Experiment II required participants to complete a …

Probing Ultra-Subwavelength Inhomogeneities Embedded Within Dielectric Targets Using Photonic Nanojets, Cesar Méndez Ruiz Aug 2011

Probing Ultra-Subwavelength Inhomogeneities Embedded Within Dielectric Targets Using Photonic Nanojets, Cesar Méndez Ruiz

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The use of optics to detect ultra-subwavelength features embedded within structures is a hot topic for a broad diversity of applications like spectroscopy, nanotechnology, microscopy, and optical data storage discs. Conventional objective lens based optical systems have a fundamental limit on the best possible resolution of about 200 \u03b7m due to the diffraction of light as it propagates into the far-field. There already exist several near-field techniques with the capability to overcome this limitation, but each of these systems has certain drawbacks related to the complexity of the system or to limitations imposed by the system. A photonic nanojet is …

Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer Aug 2011

Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer

Geography ETDs

This research used local produce as a way to investigate the construction and meaning of the local food environment by food retailers and consumers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The research consisted of three components. First, the observed local food environment was defined through store surveys that were conducted in 193 food retail outlets and farmers markets in the Albuquerque study area. These surveys were performed in order to collect information, through signage and other advertising materials, about how retailers defined 'local' produce. The subsequent qualitative text analysis on these materials allowed for several themes to emerge that characterized the observed …

The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton Aug 2011

The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton

History ETDs

Over the past century, the New Mexican chile pepper transformed from a principally local and regional crop grown by many, small scale growers into an industrial commodity on a global market. With this transformation, the ecology of the chile pepper has shifted and expanded. The actors in this ecology- the growers, the research scientists, the manufacturers of equipment, chemicals, and seeds, government legislatures, the consumers, and even the genome of the chile itself- became increasingly global with little or no ties to the local watersheds, ecosystems, and communities within the state. Driving this ecological expansion has been a close public-private …

Structural Characterization Of Metal Binding In Metallo-Β-Lactamases Using X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert M. Breece Aug 2011

Structural Characterization Of Metal Binding In Metallo-Β-Lactamases Using X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert M. Breece

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In an effort to probe the structure and mechanism of metallo-β-lactamases, the metal-binding behaviors of several enzymes were studied using EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure). Three members of the metallo-β-lactamase subclass B1, BcII from Bacillus cereus, Bla2 from Bacillus anthracis and CcrA from Bacillus fragilis, were compared to examine metal-binding behavior within a subclass. Each system exhibits different metal-binding behavior including cooperative binding (BcII), sequential binding (CcrA), and differential binding between zinc(II) and cobalt(II) forms (Bla2). The metal-binding behavior of subclass B3 of L1 from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was explored with RFQ (rapid-freeze quenched) EXAFS and site selective metal …

Sacrilege In Dinétah: Native Encounters With Glen Canyon Dam, Sonia Dickey Aug 2011

Sacrilege In Dinétah: Native Encounters With Glen Canyon Dam, Sonia Dickey

History ETDs

This dissertation spotlights indigenous encounters with Glen Canyon Dam and places Native peoples, especially the Diné, at the center of the dam story. In doing so, it exposes the façade masquerading a less pleasant and creditable reality surrounding the dam than historians have conventionally offered. Considering traditional knowledge; relationships to homeland; pivotal moments in Navajo history, such as the Long Walk and the Bosque Redondo and the stock reduction of the 1930s and 1940s; as well as mid-century Navajo Tribal Council concerns, this study uncovers a multifaceted story of water and energy development in the Southwest. In this version, the …
