An Exploration And Reconsideration Of Normal Body Temperature In Healthy Adults, Rebecca Mayo
An Exploration And Reconsideration Of Normal Body Temperature In Healthy Adults, Rebecca Mayo
Nursing ETDs
The human body temperature generally considered normal by medical professionals and the lay public and believed to be an important referent in diagnosing illness and determining its severity is 98.60 Fahrenheit (F). The initial work establishing 98.60 F published over 140 years ago may be flawed; and, even if correct, may not reflect the present normal body temperature. To investigate mean body temperature in adults ages 21-100 who regarded themselves as 'well,' an observational descriptive study was undertaken to measure body temperature using two commonly used measurement methods, oral and tympanic. 1000 adults comprised the non probability non randomized sample …

Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo
Analysis Of The Organization And Dynamics Of Proteins In Cell Membranes, Flor Aurelia Espinoza Hidalgo
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Cells communicate with the outside world through membrane receptors that recognize one of many possible stimuli (hormones, antibodies, peptides) in the extracellular environment and translate this information to intracellular responses. Stimulation of the cells produces changes in the organization and dynamics of the receptors that are critical to signal transduction. Problems in signaling networks are important in understanding many diseases including cancer, allergy and asthma, so there is great interest in understanding these changes. Biologists in the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling Center (STMC) have generated a large amount of data about the high affinity receptor FceRI, that is found …
Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.
Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.
History ETDs
In my dissertation, 'Crow History 1700 — 1950: A Political and Social Battle to Retain their Culture,' I argue that the Social and Familial Kinship system utilized by the Crow is unique, and helped the Crows to preserve much of their Culture throughout the turbulent times of direct contact and assimilation. In this research I examine the movement of the Crows from eastern woodlands onto the Northern Plains, with an emphasis on the separation from the parent tribe. I argue the Crow purposely create a new and unique maternally based social and familial kinship system because of the separation from …

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo
Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Models are important tools for designing or redesigning water treatment processes and technologies to minimize disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation without compromising disinfection efficiency. Empirical models, which are the most common, are based on bulk water quality parameters that vary with time and space. These parameters may not always have linear relationships with chlorine demand and DBPs formation which make structure-based models more attractive to study. In this dissertation, Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) models which make use of structural properties of individual molecules were developed using experimental data obtained from the literature. The amounts are reported in moles of chlorine (HOCl) …

Assessment Of The Biocompatibility, Stability, And Suitability Of Novel Thermoresponsive Films For The Rapid Generation Of Cellular Constructs, Jamie Reed
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Stimuli responsive polymers (SRP) are of great interest in the bioengineering community due to their use in applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. One example of an SRP is poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) or pNIPAM. This SRP has the capability of changing its conformation with a slight temperature change: adherent mammalian cells spontaneously release as a confluent cell sheet, which can be harvested for cell sheet engineering purposes. Since its initial use in 1968, many researchers have used pNIPAM to obtain a cell sheet composed of their cell type of interest. The differing protocols used for these diverse cell types, …
Stream Channel Adjustments And Persistence Of Change In Response To Beaver Damming On A Fluvial Fan, Odell Creek, Montana, Rebekah Levine
Stream Channel Adjustments And Persistence Of Change In Response To Beaver Damming On A Fluvial Fan, Odell Creek, Montana, Rebekah Levine
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Beaver damming in streams is thought to increase bed elevation through in-channel sediment storage, thus beaver reintroductions are used as a river restoration tool to repair incised stream channels. However, effects of beaver damming are dependent on specific stream hydrologic and geomorphic characteristics. Data on dam effects, especially the longevity of dam effects, are limited. To investigate whether damming promotes channel aggradation and creates persistent geomorphic change, 9 reaches containing 46 cross-sections were studied on Odell Creek at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Centennial Valley, Montana. Odell Creek has a basin area of 46 km2, a snowmelt-dominated hydrograph and …
The Role Of Tacr1 Genotypes In Craving, Depression, And Alcohol Dependence., Sara Keelan Blaine
The Role Of Tacr1 Genotypes In Craving, Depression, And Alcohol Dependence., Sara Keelan Blaine
Psychology ETDs
Given that stress and major depression are putative causal factors in alcohol consumption, the exploration of the genes and the associated neurobiological mechanisms that influence the relationship between stress, depression, and alcohol dependence (AD) is a first step toward the development of novel medications for AD. The tachykinin receptor 1 (TACR1) gene is a promising candidate gene, showing an association with stress-related behaviors (Thorsell et al., 2010), major depression (Kramer et al., 2004), and AD treatment outcome (George et al., 2008). The purpose of the current study was to determine if TACR1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with (1) …
Through The Eye Of The Needle: Investigations Of Ethnographic, Experimental, And Archaeological Bone Tool Use Wear From Perishable Technologies, Elisabeth Ann Stone
Through The Eye Of The Needle: Investigations Of Ethnographic, Experimental, And Archaeological Bone Tool Use Wear From Perishable Technologies, Elisabeth Ann Stone
Anthropology ETDs
Perishable technologies - objects made from soft, organic materials that often decay quickly in the archaeological record - are known to be both ubiquitous and abundant in contemporary and historic societies, regardless of variation in social and economic organization or local environment. They are commonly made by women, children and elders, members of society that are often underrepresented in reconstructions of the past. However, their perishable nature means that these objects are recovered from the archaeological record at low rates, relative to that of more durable materials. Consequently, most evidence for these technologies is indirect. Use wear on the surface …
Predicting Body Mass From The Skeleton With An Application To The Georgia Coast, Shamsi R. Daneshvari
Predicting Body Mass From The Skeleton With An Application To The Georgia Coast, Shamsi R. Daneshvari
Anthropology ETDs
Body mass has been studied in multiple subfields within anthropology, including paleoanthropology, bioarchaeology, biomechanics, and forensics. Most previous studies that focused on predicting mass from the skeleton utilized population averages, living subjects, and/or small sample sizes. This study sought to create an individualized predictive model of body mass estimation from multiple skeletal elements. The new multiple element model was then compared to three models currently used by anthropologists. Three hypotheses were tested: 1) the multiple element model has a lower predictive error than the other models, 2) upper limb elements will predict mass more accurately and 3) articular dimensions predict …

Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber
Miniature Nation Building: Model Railroading And The Dialectics Of Scale In Post-Wwii America, Ivan Weber
American Studies ETDs
This thesis advances a critical understanding of how scale informs the production and consumption of the American nation, and it makes a foray into Marxist critical analysis by integrating the theoretical and methodological objectives of historical materialism with the multiple, dialectically construed dimensionalities of scale. The hobby of model railroading serves as the case study for this analysis, and the dialectics of scale as the theoretical apparatus with which this analysis is articulated. The central argument of the thesis is that the model railroad hobby builds the nation, in miniature, through the continual regeneration of American masculinity, the traditional American …
Mammalian Diversification Across The Holarctic: Spatiotemporal Evolution In Response To Environmental Change, Andrew G. Hope
Mammalian Diversification Across The Holarctic: Spatiotemporal Evolution In Response To Environmental Change, Andrew G. Hope
Biology ETDs
The primary focus in this dissertation is on the processes of environmental change that drive evolution. We are currently witnessing unparalleled changes in climate and associated changes in biotic communities. With a growing understanding that climate and habitat change, coupled with natural variability, will have an increased influence on biota into the future, it is our responsibility to learn how best to manage and conserve the Earths natural resources. Among other things, this will require a firmer understanding of biodiversity, life histories, evolutionary relationships among species, and community dynamics over multiple species. One method of understanding how species will respond …
Transcriptional Analysis Of Schistosoma Mansoni Treated With Sub-Lethal Doses Of The Anthelmintic Drug Praziquantel, Jarrett Hines-Kay
Transcriptional Analysis Of Schistosoma Mansoni Treated With Sub-Lethal Doses Of The Anthelmintic Drug Praziquantel, Jarrett Hines-Kay
Biology ETDs
Schistosoma mansoni is one of the most common etiological agents responsible for the disease schistosomiasis. More than 200 million people suffer from this disease making it the most severe tropical disease after malaria in terms of morbidity. Praziquantel (PZQ) is the treatment of choice for schistosomiasis and has been used almost exclusively to treat the disease since the 1970s. However, while the drug is lethal for sexually mature schistosomes, it is ineffective against juveniles. Thus, while morbidity can be eased, a cure is difficult to achieve. As a result there is an urgent need to develop a new generation of …
Hearts, Bellies, And The Hunger Of Heroes: Intertraditional Agonistic Discourse Between The Iliad And Odyssey, Israel Mcmullin
Hearts, Bellies, And The Hunger Of Heroes: Intertraditional Agonistic Discourse Between The Iliad And Odyssey, Israel Mcmullin
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
Within this thesis I argue that the Iliad and Odyssey, as representatives of sub-genres within the larger archaic Greek epic tradition, engage in a shared agonistic discourse with one another in order to demonstrate that the hero of each epic is superior to that of its competitor. In order to trace this agonistic discourse, I examine the manner in which each epic employs the terms thumos, 'heart,' and gaster, 'belly,' to define itself in opposition to its competing epic sub-genre. Traditionally scholars have considered the Odyssey the more recent of the two epics and, thus, relying upon the Iliad. However, …
Evaluating Mitochondrial Uncoupling Potentials Of A7e And Dnp In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae : Implications For Human Obesity, Roger Vaughan
Evaluating Mitochondrial Uncoupling Potentials Of A7e And Dnp In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae : Implications For Human Obesity, Roger Vaughan
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Obesity is one of the most prevalent maladies in the United States and is a major cause of preventable death. Weight loss supplements frequently claim uncoupling as a mechanism of action. Uncoupling agents could be used for weight loss because they disrupt mitochondrial metabolism thereby reducing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) yield. Consequently, metabolic efficiency diminishes increasing basal metabolic rate. 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) successfully uncouples but was banned in 1938 because of a narrow window between efficacy and toxicity. PURPOSE: To measure the ability of a blend that reportedly contains 17-dihydroxy-delta-5-etiocholane-7-one and p-methylcarbonylethylphenol and other substances (A7E), a purported uncoupling agent, to interfere …

Allometric Scaling And Metabolic Ecology Of Microorganisms And Major Evolutionary Transitions, Jordan G. Okie
Allometric Scaling And Metabolic Ecology Of Microorganisms And Major Evolutionary Transitions, Jordan G. Okie
Biology ETDs
My dissertation centers around investigating big-picture questions related to understanding the consequences of metabolism and energetics on the evolution, ecology, and physiology of life. The evolutionary transitions from prokaryotes to unicellular eukaryotes to multicellular organisms were accompanied by major innovations in metabolic design. In my first chapter, I show that the scaling of metabolic rate, population growth rate, and production efficiency with body size have changed across these transitions. Metabolic rate scales with body mass superlinearly in prokaryotes, linearly in protists, and sublinearly in metazoans, so Kleibers 3/4 power scaling law does not apply universally across organisms. This means that …
Paratransgenic Control Of Vibriosis In Shrimp Aquaculture, Bobban Subhadra
Paratransgenic Control Of Vibriosis In Shrimp Aquaculture, Bobban Subhadra
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Infectious diseases are an increasing threat to shrimp farming industries worldwide and account for nearly $3 billion of annual economic loss. The need to devise novel approaches against these infectious agents is pressing, as traditional methods are insufficient to ward off infections. The main aim of this study was to apply paratransgenesis to control infectious agents mediating shrimp diseases. As proof-of-concept we showed that Artemia, a food source in shrimp aquaculture, internalized bacteria expressing recombinant proteins. Stable expression and retention of these marker molecules up to 10 hours after feeding with the transgenic bacteria were evident within the gut of …
Small Molecule Inhibition Of Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence, Erin Sully
Small Molecule Inhibition Of Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence, Erin Sully
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The increasing emergence of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, particularly those caused by a single clone of methicillin resistant S. aureus (USA300 MRSA), coupled with the slowing of antibiotic discovery makes research into novel therapies a priority (Lowy, 2007). One strategy evolving is the development of drugs that target bacterial virulence factors as opposed to growth (Cegelski et al., 2008). Due to the lack of selective pressure, bacterial resistance to the drugs would be minimized while the infection, attenuated by the inhibition of virulence factor production, could be cleared by the innate immune factors of the host. Virulence factors identified …
C-Myb Alternative Splicing: A Novel Biomarker In Leukemia, Ye E. Zhou
C-Myb Alternative Splicing: A Novel Biomarker In Leukemia, Ye E. Zhou
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
c-myb encodes a transcription factor that is essential for hematopoiesis and for normal development of other tissues. There is ample evidence showing the activated alleles of c-myb gene can induce leukemias in several animal species. However, there was no clear evidence showing that c-myb could be oncogenic in human cancers until recent studies revealed that the human c-myb locus is subjected to chromosomal rearrangement in some pediatric T-ALL and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) patient samples. The c-myb gene contains 15 constant exons and 6 alternative exons and can undergo extensive alternative splicing. These alternatively spliced variants encode variant Myb proteins …
Neurosteriod Enhancement Of Glutamatergic Transmission Via Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 Chanels In The Developing Cerebellum, Paula Andrea Zamudio-Bulcock
Neurosteriod Enhancement Of Glutamatergic Transmission Via Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 Chanels In The Developing Cerebellum, Paula Andrea Zamudio-Bulcock
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Neurosteroids are compounds synthesized de novo within the central nervous system and affect brain function via genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. Sulfated neurosteroids modulate synaptic neurotransmission via interactions with various membrane receptors located at pre- and/ or postsynaptic sites, including metabotropic and ionotropic neurotransmitter receptors and ion permeable channels. The interactions of sulfated neurosteroids with these types of targets can induce rapid changes in neurotransmitter release and/or in postsynaptic responses. Since the 1940's, pregnenolone sulfate (PregS), the sulfated version of the steroid precursor, pregnenolone, has been suggested to have anti-stress, anti-aging, antidepressive, neuroprotective and memory enhancing effects in the mature brain. …
