Linking Precipitation And C3 - C4 Plant Production To Resource Dynamics In Higher Trophic Level Consumers: Lizard Data (2005-2006), Robin Warne
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
In many ecosystems, seasonal shifts in temperature and precipitation induce pulses of primary productivity that vary in phenology, abundance and nutritional quality. Â Variation in these resource pulses could strongly influence community composition and ecosystem function, because these pervasive bottom-up forces play a primary role in determining the biomass, life cycles and interactions of organisms across trophic levels. Â The focus of this research is to understand how consumers across trophic levels alter resource use and assimilation over seasonal and inter-annual timescales in response to climatically driven changes in pulses of primary productivity. We measured the carbon isotope ratios (d13C) …

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
The appearance of pockets of the Bolivian indigenous population who are withdrawing the support that they have always given the administration of President Evo Morales has given the political right some cause for celebration. After six years in the opposition, the old structures that historically dominated and led the country have been unable to reinvent themselves, to create a new party, or to generate a program capable of attracting citizens and presenting itself as a valid alternative to the governing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). But the emergence of indigenous leaders who, for various reasons, broke with their former leader is …

Long-Term Monitoring And Maintenance Plan For The Mixed Waste Landfill, March 2012, Sandia National Laboratories/Nm Snl
Facilities-Units
The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) and Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) have submitted the Long-Term Monitoring and Maintenance Plan (LTMMP) to the New Mexico Environment Department, as required by the May 2005 Final Order. The LTMMP, which took effect on January 8, 2014, defines all remedy controls and monitoring, inspection, maintenance, repair, and reporting requirements for the MWL. The purpose of the long-term monitoring and maintenance program is to ensure that the final remedy (i.e., vegetative soil cover with biointrusion barrier) remans protective of human health and the environment. 276 pages.
The Practice Of Disaster Law, Clifford J. Villa
The Practice Of Disaster Law, Clifford J. Villa
Faculty Scholarship
9/11…Katrina…the BP Oil Spill…Few of us probably want to say that our primary practice area is “Disaster Law,” but the reality is that it is an increasingly potent area of focus for many law firms. Clifford Villa tells us that 2011 was an unprecedented year for disasters in the United States, and unfortunately, like death and taxes—it likely will continue to grow.
Estudio Sociolinguistico De La Marca Diferencial De Objeto Directo (Dom) En Dos Variedades Del Espanol Contemporaneo, Sonia Balasch Rodriguez
Estudio Sociolinguistico De La Marca Diferencial De Objeto Directo (Dom) En Dos Variedades Del Espanol Contemporaneo, Sonia Balasch Rodriguez
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This sociolinguistic-variationist investigation sheds light on two little-studied issues concerning Spanish DOM, or variable use of a before animate direct objects (DOs), in vernacular language: the complex interaction of co-occurring linguistic (type of verb; definiteness, specificity, grammatical number, topicality, type and syntactic position of DO) and social (speakers age, gender and occupation) features. The statistical analysis of over 1000 tokens of oral Spanish of Mérida, Venezuela, and Madrid, Spain, indicates that although a+OD is used more in Madrid (61% vs. 46%), both varieties show markedly parallel linguistic conditioning: the lexical effect of certain verbs (tener, ver, conocer, among others), as …
Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning
Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning
Nursing ETDs
Older adults continue to live longer, and their desire is to not only live longer but to remain as independent as possible. Therefore, older adults strive to live more productive lives, not to just continue to exist. By living a healthy life, older adults are empowered to take control, not only of their health but of other important life decisions. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe rural older adults behaviors toward healthy lifestyles. The theoretical framework for the study was Pender's health promotion model, which addressed factors that enhance health-promoting behavior, leading to improved health and …
Object Detection Learning : Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, And Image Novelty, Brian Coffman
Object Detection Learning : Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, And Image Novelty, Brian Coffman
Psychology ETDs
This investigation studied the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on learning of a difficult visual search task. We also examined the effects of several variables relating to context in which the task was performed, and the relationship of these variables to the effects of tDCS. For this discovery-learning task, participants were trained for one hour to detect objects hidden in a virtual environment. Anodal tDCS was applied over the right inferior frontal cortex at 0.1 mA or 2.0 mA for 30 minutes during training. Participants were tested immediately before and after training and again one hour later. Some …
Health, Well-Being, And Experiences Of Discrimination For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Paulette J. Christopher
Health, Well-Being, And Experiences Of Discrimination For Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual People, Paulette J. Christopher
Psychology ETDs
Like racial and ethnic minorities, sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people) are at increased risk for mental (Meyer, 2003; Hatzenbuehler, 2009) and physical (Conran, Mimiaga, & Landers, 2008; Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, 2010; Huebner & Davis, 2007) health problems compared to heterosexuals. The current study attempted to 1) determine if the stress related to discrimination mediated the relationship between discrimination and health and well-being for LGB people, and 2) and identify risk and resilience factors specific to LGB people that might moderate the relationship between discrimination related stress and LGB health, mental health and satisfaction with life. …

Examining The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Pilot Studies : Monte-Carlo Simulations, Masato Nakazawa
Psychology ETDs
Estimating population effect size accurately and precisely plays a vital role in achieving a desired level of statistical power as well as drawing correct conclusions from empirical results. While a number of common practices of effect-size estimation have been documented (e.g., relying on ones experience and intuition, and conducting pilot studies), their relative advantages and disadvantages have been insufficiently investigated. To establish a practical guideline for researchers in this respect, this project compared the accuracy and precision of effect-size estimation, resulting power, and economic implications across pilot and non-pilot conditions. Furthermore, to model the potential advantages of pilot studies in …
Will You Have A False Memory? : Investigating Individual Differences In Semantic False Memories, Susan Stevens-Adams
Will You Have A False Memory? : Investigating Individual Differences In Semantic False Memories, Susan Stevens-Adams
Psychology ETDs
Four experiments extended the false memory research by investigating false memory performance at the individual level (e.g., Stevens, unpublished Masters Thesis, 2006). The experiments used the DRM paradigm which presents lists of associated studied words (e.g., hot, winter) and then tests whether nonpresented theme word(s) (e.g., cold) is (are) falsely remembered. Previous research (e.g., fuzzy-trace theory) has proposed that the semantic relationships between words on the DRM lists are influential in false memory performance. In the experiments, each participant rated the semantic relatedness of word pairs drawn from associated sets. The first experiment investigated whether participants' semantic ratings would predict …
Panhe At The Crossroads: Toward An Indigenized Environmental Justice Theory, Dina Gilio-Whitaker
Panhe At The Crossroads: Toward An Indigenized Environmental Justice Theory, Dina Gilio-Whitaker
American Studies ETDs
Through a case study of the protection of a Native American sacred site from the development of a road through it in southern California, this study argues that environmental justice (EJ) for Native peoples encompasses far more than the protection of marginalized people from disproportionate rates of detrimental health effects of industry. Mainstream environmental justice discourse is troubled when it centers indigenous peoples' histories, differentiated political status, and epistemologies in EJ analytical frameworks. Viewing EJ through the lens of settler colonialism allows for an analysis that broadens the scope of what environmental justice means for indigenous peoples by examining the …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Synthetic Substrates For Use In Rigidity Cell Culture Studies Of Valvular Interstitial Cells For Aortic Valve Tissue Engineering, Alexander T. Leonard
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
More than 100,000 Americans each year undergo aortic valve (AV) replacement due to valve failure. An AV can become diseased, impairing the proper function of the valve. Common treatments for a defective valve are either replacement with a decellularized biologic or a synthetic valve. These treatments options are limited by short functional lifetime and thrombogenic surfaces. Tissue engineered heart valve will have the ability to integrate with the surrounding tissue as well as to repair and remodel. However, a greater understanding of valve cell biology is required to induce analogous tissue formation. A diseased valve is associated with stiffening of …
Evolution Of Structure And Function Among Hotdog-Fold Thioesterases And Had Family Phosphatases, Wang Min
Evolution Of Structure And Function Among Hotdog-Fold Thioesterases And Had Family Phosphatases, Wang Min
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
My doctoral research began with the function assignment to two domains of fusion protein BT4699, from Bacteriodes thetaiotaomicron, BF1314 from Bacteriodes fragilis and PG1653 from Porphyromonas gingivalis. BT4699, however, is insoluble, so its orthologue BF1314 and PG1653 were prepared and studied. The fusion proteins consist of a domain that belong to a large family of phosphatases known as Haloacid Dehalogenase (HAD) superfamily, and a domain belong to the hotdog-fold thioesterase superfamily. The genes encoding the fusion proteins located at an operon that encoding enzymes involved in the menaquinone biosynthetic pathway. So we assumed that the thioesterase domain is connected to …

A Case Study Using Literacy Assessment Portfolios With Students Identified With Disabilities, Debbie Keiley
Special Education ETDs
The purpose of this case study, using a qualitative research design, was to examine the process of using literacy assessment portfolios (LAPs) within a cross-categorical special education classroom to investigate whether or not using LAPs would provide distinct information about the literacy development of two students identified with specific learning disabilities and one student identified with autism. It also investigated whether or not the information obtained from the LAPs would impact the teacher-investigators instructional decision-making and whether or not using LAPs would influence parents' understanding of their child's progress and skills in the area of literacy development. The outcomes of …
The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera
The Other Vanishing American: Disappearing Farmers In American Literature, 1887-1939., Carolyn Kuchera
English Language and Literature ETDs
Beginning in the late nineteenth century, literary depictions of farmers borrow from the established trope of the Vanishing American' Indian to portray farmers as disappearing before the forces of modern civilization. I argue that writing about farmers from this era ought to be approached as a type of extinction discourse: the rhetoric surrounding the decline of a race or culture. Extinction discourse, whether applied to the American Indian or to farmers, fuses mourning over a passing way of life with celebration of civilization's progress. Farmers are portrayed as primitive figures, as fundamentally incompatible with modern civilization, in all of the …
Charged Hadron Beam Therapy : Fast Computational Physics Methods, Roy William Keyes
Charged Hadron Beam Therapy : Fast Computational Physics Methods, Roy William Keyes
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Charged hadron beams have been investigated for use in radiation therapy of cancer since the 1940s due to their unique potential to place tightly conformal radiation doses deep inside tissue. This is achieved by exploiting the phenomenon of the so-called Bragg peak. In both research and clinical settings, fast and accurate radiation calculations play a crucial role in charged hadron therapy physics. Unfortunately, physicists are often faced with the fundamental trade off of speed versus accuracy in their calculations. This dissertation addresses this trade off by presenting three computational physics methods for specific and general charged hadron beam therapy calculations. …
Selective Fluoride Removal By Aluminum Precipitation & Membrane Filtration, Emily Kowalchuk
Selective Fluoride Removal By Aluminum Precipitation & Membrane Filtration, Emily Kowalchuk
Civil Engineering ETDs
Fluoride is an anionic constituent of most natural surface and ground waters. At low concentrations it has the beneficial effect of improving dental health, but at high concentrations it causes skeletal and other problems. The drinking water standard for fluoride is 4.0 mg/L, but even at this level approximately 10% of exposed children will develop dental enamel fluorosis. Several small communities in New Mexico have source waters with fluoride concentrations higher than 4.0 mg/L. No commercial technologies selectively remove fluoride from drinking water in part because it is relatively non-reactive in aqueous solution and also because its chemistry is similar …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Legal Recourse: Interpreting And Revising Title Vii To Prohibit Workplace Segregation Premised On Religion, Dawinder S. Sidhu
Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this article is to argue that the federal courts’ prevailing interpretation of Title VII with respect to religious attire in the workplace is inconsistent with the law. I maintain that Title VII prohibits employers from either placing employees in the back or refusing to hire individuals with conspicuous articles of faith due to any actual or perceived social discomfort with the employee’s religion-based appearance. I am persuaded of this for two independent reasons. First, placing an employee out of public view does not constitute a “reasonable accommodation” under Title VII because the statute’s general anti-discrimination provision expressly …
The German Model For American Medical Reform, Charles E. Mcclelland
The German Model For American Medical Reform, Charles E. Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
The Flexner Report of 1910, which radically transformed American medical education and medical schools, may be seen not so much as a completely novel initiative as the culmination of a longer transfer of models from Germany, with which Flexner was intimately acquainted.
