Tribes, States, And Landscapes: The Ecological Impacts Of Changing Land Use During The Islamic Period In Southern Portugal, F. Scott Worman May 2012

Tribes, States, And Landscapes: The Ecological Impacts Of Changing Land Use During The Islamic Period In Southern Portugal, F. Scott Worman

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation concerns human-environment interactions in southeastern Portugal during the centuries following the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire. In contrast to the feudal systems that developed across Western Europe outside Iberia, the Islamic polities that controlled the study area from 711 to 1248 C.E. allowed agrarian producers a great deal of political and economic independence. As a result, rural areas were more densely populated and the residents were wealthier than in earlier or later periods or contemporary feudal Christian kingdoms. The archaeological, geological, and historical investigations reported in this volume illuminate the timing, nature, and causes of past ecological …

Variation And Organization In Social Behavior: Infectious Disease And Human Intergroup Conflict And Warfare; And The Organization Of Foraging Behavior In Harvester Ants, Kenneth Letendre May 2012

Variation And Organization In Social Behavior: Infectious Disease And Human Intergroup Conflict And Warfare; And The Organization Of Foraging Behavior In Harvester Ants, Kenneth Letendre

Biology ETDs

Social behavior is an important contributor to the success of widely distributed animal taxa, including such distantly related taxa as humans and ants. There is variation in the features and organization of social systems based on ecological constraints and goals, as these alter the costs and benefits of social behaviors, and select for different optimal behaviors for social groups in different environments. I present two bodies of research: an effort to explain geographic variation in the frequency and intensity of human civil conflict; and an effort to describe and model the foraging behavior of colonies of harvester ants of the …

The Effects Of Precipitation Variability On C4 Photosynthesis, Net Primary Production And Soil Respiration In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Michell L. Thomey May 2012

The Effects Of Precipitation Variability On C4 Photosynthesis, Net Primary Production And Soil Respiration In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland, Michell L. Thomey

Biology ETDs

Although the Earths climate system has always been inherently variable, the magnitude and rate of anthropogenic climate change is subjecting ecosystems and the populations that they contain to novel environmental conditions. Because water is the most limiting resource, arid-semiarid ecosystems are likely to be highly responsive to future climate variability. The goal of my dissertation is to understand how precipitation variability affects primary productivity and soil respiration in desert grassland ecosystems. Initially, I reviewed the literature to understand how climate change affects net ecosystem exchange (NEE) across the warm deserts of North America (Chapter 2). Next, I examined the effects …

Lymphocyte Evolution And Ontogeny In Non-Eutherian Mammals, Xinxin Wang May 2012

Lymphocyte Evolution And Ontogeny In Non-Eutherian Mammals, Xinxin Wang

Biology ETDs

Based on their different reproductive modes and evolutionary history, extant mammals are divided into three lineages: eutherians, marsupials and monotremes. Marsupials are the closest relatives to eutherians. They are born immune-incompetent. The characteristic that they develop their immune system postnatally makes them unique models to study newborn immune development and maternal immunology. As monotremes comprises the basal lineage of mammals, the study of monotreme immunology will provide unique insights regarding the origin of the mammalian immune system. Unfortunately, compared to our in-depth knowledge of eutherian immunology, especially humans and mice, knowledge of marsupial and monotreme immunology is scarce. The goal …

Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo May 2012

Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Defining underlying molecular mechanisms exploited by cancer cells in their development and progression provides a necessary foundation for experimental therapeutics. The androgen receptor (AR) is a known therapeutic target for prostate cancer (CaP) given its well-established role in both the development and progression of CaP. The AR is a ligand activated transcription factor that regulates the expression of many genes involved in proliferation and differentiation. Identifying agents that down-regulate AR expression may elucidate mechanism(s) for selectively targeting the AR. Two related agents of the natural products curcumin and vitamin E, curcumin analog 27 (ca27) and alpha-tocopheryl quinone (TQ), respectively were …

Population Dynamics Of Flaviviruses In The United States, Kendra Pesko May 2012

Population Dynamics Of Flaviviruses In The United States, Kendra Pesko

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The genus Flavivirus comprises viral species with positive sense, single stranded RNA genomes, most of which are transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks. During replication, RNA viruses have higher mutation rates than DNA viruses, because their virally encoded RNA dependent RNA polymerase has no proofreading activity. These viruses have been shown to exist within and between hosts as swarms of closely related mutant genomes that can be examined through sequence analysis. In the work presented here we focus on the population dynamics of two zoonotic flaviviruses that cause human morbidity and mortality in the United States: tick-borne Powassan virus (POW) and …

Multifunctional Iron Platinum Stealth Immunomicelles: Targeted Imaging And Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Robert M. Taylor May 2012

Multifunctional Iron Platinum Stealth Immunomicelles: Targeted Imaging And Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Robert M. Taylor

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In the United States, prostate cancer is the second most common reason for cancer death in men. No imaging methods currently exist which are specific for detecting, imaging, and treating extracapsular or metastatic prostate cancer. The goal of this research was to develop novel nanoparticles that would specifically target human prostate cancer cells and simultaneously deliver a chemotherapeutic agent and superior magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent to the prostate cancer cells for both therapy and MRI detection. This dissertation describes the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of superparamagnetic iron-platinum nanoparticles (SIPPs) and their subsequent encapsulation with the drug Paclitaxel, using …

Ethanol Exposure Impairs Glutamatergic Synaptic Transmission And Plasticity In The Ca1 Hippocampal Region During The Third Trimester-Equivalent Of Human Pregnancy: Implications For Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Michael P. Puglia May 2012

Puglia

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder results from developmental exposure to ethanol. Although many organ systems are targeted by this teratogen, the central nervous system is exquisitely sensitive. Children with this disease often present with behavioral disorders as well as impairments in learning and memory. Ethanol exposure affects developmental processes throughout pregnancy; however, the third trimester-equivalent has demonstrated heightened sensitivity. Although the mechanism of action(s) of ethanol remains unknown, studies suggest that impairments in glutamatergic signaling and synaptic plasticity during the third trimester-equivalent period of development lead to alterations in synaptic formation and refinement. However, little is known about the developmental effects …

Florentine Palaces, Costly Signaling, And Lineage Survival, Michael K. Church May 2012

Florentine Palaces, Costly Signaling, And Lineage Survival, Michael K. Church

Anthropology ETDs

My dissertation evaluated whether the palaces built in Florence, Italy during the Renaissance are a form of costly signaling. Costly signaling theory was developed to explain why organisms have attributes and behaviors that appear to defy basic Darwinian logic by having costs that are not offset by obvious benefits. The theory proposes that such attributes and behaviors persist because they are reliable signals of information about the signalers. Signal audiences use the information content of signals to rank signalers and to modify their interactions with signalers in ways that benefit signalers. These interactions can involve mate choice, predation avoidance, status …

Predictive Geospatial Modeling For Archaeological Research And Conservation: Case Studies From The Galisteo Basin, Vermont And Chaco Canyon, Wetherbee Bryan Dorshow May 2012

Predictive Geospatial Modeling For Archaeological Research And Conservation: Case Studies From The Galisteo Basin, Vermont And Chaco Canyon, Wetherbee Bryan Dorshow

Anthropology ETDs

Geospatial modeling of ancient landscapes for predictive scientific research and hypothesis testing is an important emerging approach in contemporary archaeology. This doctoral dissertation is comprised of three published North American case studies that clearly demonstrate the value of predictive geospatial modeling to address explicit goals of contemporary archaeological research, conservation and cultural resource management. The case studies consist of a GIS-based prioritization analysis of natural and cultural resources conservation value in the Galisteo Basin of north-central New Mexico, an archaeological sensitivity analysis (site-discovery potential) for the state of Vermont, and a predictive model of agricultural potential during the Bonito Phase …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Effects On Nmda Receptor Subunit Composition And Function In The Mouse Dentate Gyrus, Megan Brady May 2012

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Effects On Nmda Receptor Subunit Composition And Function In The Mouse Dentate Gyrus, Megan Brady

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in humans leads to learning and memory impairments later in life. The range of physical, behavioral, emotional, and social dysfunctions that are associated with PAE are collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). It is estimated that approximately 12% of women consume alcohol at some time during their pregnancy and as many as 5% of children born in the United States are impacted by PAE. Extensive research has shown that even moderate maternal drinking (1-2 drinks per day) is, in some individuals, associated with cognitive and behavioral deficits. Existing models for PAE have been useful …

Mechanisms Of Hydrogen Sulfide Induced Vasodilation, Olan Jackson-Weaver May 2012

Mechanisms Of Hydrogen Sulfide Induced Vasodilation, Olan Jackson-Weaver

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Myogenic tone is an important regulator of blood flow and may contribute to peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. Myogenic tone is a luminal pressure-induced constriction of the vasculature that is mediated by a vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) plasma membrane potential (Em) depolarization and Ca2+ influx. Ca2+ sparks, which are ryanodine receptor (RyR) mediated Ca2+ release events, oppose myogenic tone by activating large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels (BKCa) to hyperpolarize VSMC Em. The gaseous signaling molecules (gasotransmitters) NO and CO activate Ca2+ sparks to cause vasodilation. H2S, a third gasotransmitter produced by cystationine γ-lyase (CSE) in the vasculature, activates several …

Antibody-Mediated Protection Against Pulmonary Infection With Virulent Type A Francisella Tularensis, Gopi Mara-Koosham May 2012

Antibody-Mediated Protection Against Pulmonary Infection With Virulent Type A Francisella Tularensis, Gopi Mara-Koosham

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Respiratory infections with the virulent type A strains of Francisella tularensis (Ft) cause pneumonic tularemia, an illness which results in high case fatalities in the absence of timely antibiotic treatment. Although immunization is an effective countermeasure, vaccines against pulmonary tularemia are currently unavailable. A better understanding of protective immune components is therefore needed to develop licensable vaccines against pulmonary tularemia. While the indispensability of cell-mediated immunity in protection against this gram-negative intracellular bacterium is well-documented, the protective role of antibodies (Abs) is unclear. Hence we examined the role of humoral immunity by developing a passive immunization model of respiratory tularemia …

The Role Of Furin In Human Papillomavirus Infection, Sonya Persia Flores May 2012

The Role Of Furin In Human Papillomavirus Infection, Sonya Persia Flores

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the causative agent of cervical cancer and infect skin and mucosal membranes. Through wounding the virus establishes infection in the basal layer of human keratinocytes and requires differentiating squamous epithelium to complete the viral life cycle. HPV virions contain two structural viral proteins: the major capsid protein L1 that self-assembles into capsid structures, and the minor capsid protein, L2, that is essential for infection. It is believed that HPV cellular entry occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis and that the primary attachment factors used by the virus are heparan sulfonated proteoglycans (HSPGs). Most current HPV literature follows an …

Immune Regulation And Fc(Alpha)Ri Recognition And Activation By C-Reactive Protein, Kristopher David Marjon May 2012

Immune Regulation And Fc(Alpha)Ri Recognition And Activation By C-Reactive Protein, Kristopher David Marjon

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The acute phase serum protein C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the major responding proteins during inflammation response in humans. CRP is a serum pattern recognition molecule that can bind to dead or damaged cells and bacteria to initiate their clearance through interaction with immunoglobulin receptors expressed on the surface of immune cells. Immunoglobulin receptors are traditionally thought to bind exclusively to the fragment crystallizable (Fc) region of immunoglobulins and are consequently called Fc receptors (FcRs). FcRs have been shown to play an immunoregulatory role by either exacerbating inflammatory states or potently inhibiting or reversing inflammation. CRP has been proposed …

Subject Expression In Brazilian Portuguese: Construction And Frequency Effects, Agripino Silveira May 2012

Subject Expression In Brazilian Portuguese: Construction And Frequency Effects, Agripino Silveira

Linguistics ETDs

Brazilian Portuguese (henceforth BP) has for long been considered as a Null-subject language due to its variability in regards to subject expression (e.g. Era bom porque eu diminu\xeda de peso... era muito gordinha \u2018That was good because then I could lose some weight\u2026 (I) was a bit chubby. C33:179). Such variability has been attributed to the language's once rich inflectional system, and the reported increase in rate of subject expression has been seen as a result of changes to the system (Barbosa, Duarte, & Kato, 2005; Monteiro, 1994b; Negr\xe3o & Viotti, 2000). Moreover, there is agreement among several scholars that …

Frames Behind The Throne: Contextualizing The Calotype Albums Of Prince Albert 1850-1859, Sherri Sorensen-Clem May 2012

Frames Behind The Throne: Contextualizing The Calotype Albums Of Prince Albert 1850-1859, Sherri Sorensen-Clem

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis examines four extant calotype albums from the collection of Prince Albert and, contains approximately 383 images ranging in date from 1850-1859. I propose that the photographs in these albums, which belong to Queen Victoria’s husband, operate as fragments of the visual world and form a pictorial autobiography of the Prince Consort, offering frames behind the throne. It is my contention that Prince Albert uses the mimetic faculty of the photograph and its placement within the album to become an object of narrative, autobiography, and identity. This thesis will also attempt to contextualize the historical impact of being a …

The study found that DACC'S direct, indirect, and induced impacts include 1,189 jobs; $26.6 million of income; and $76.4 million in economic output during FY11. BBER calculations also …

Brazil Sues Chevron Following Oil Spill, Andrés Gaudín Apr 2012

Brazil Sues Chevron Following Oil Spill, Andrés Gaudín

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Thanks to operations that lacked both integrity and reliability and which produced a spill of at least 300 barrels of crude a day for eight days, Chevron will have to pay millions of dollars in fines and damages. Chevron has become accustomed to such emergencies; in Ecuador, the court found it guilty but so far it has evaded compliance with the verdict thanks to a legion of lawyers who know well how to move through the corridors of power. The Brazil case seems to confirm environmentalists' fears: everything indicated that, after Nov. 8, 2011, the courts would exclude Chevron from …
