Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card Jul 2013

Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is an increasing trend within the United States and the importance of addressing both causation and effects of obesity are becoming more important. It has been shown that environment, genetics, and social behavior factors can lead to an increased risk of obesity. Obesity has also been associated with several negative health concerns including increased risk for heart disease, cancer, poor nutrition, and diabetes, among others. Beyond identifying individual factors that may lead to obesity, and be associated with it, it is important to take into account complex obese biological systems which may have multiple factors compounding any health problems. …

Improving Spoken Programming Through Language Design And The Incorporation Of Dynamic Context, Benjamin M. Gordon Jul 2013

Improving Spoken Programming Through Language Design And The Incorporation Of Dynamic Context, Benjamin M. Gordon

Computer Science ETDs

Programming is not just about the syntax of the language; the programming environment is also an important part of the process. In English prose speech recog- nition, knowledge of the context of the conversation or document being produced is useful to disambiguate otherwise error-prone phrases or words. Our spoken programming environment explores the same idea applied to programming by incorporating several forms of context inherent in computer programs to guide and enhance the speech recognition engine: We use the structure and grammar of the language itself, we use scoping of symbols and identifiers, and we incorporate constraints gleaned from type …

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello Jul 2013

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello

Anthropology ETDs

This study uses a bioarchaeological approach to investigate the behavioral and social correlates of changes in skeletal properties during the Iron Age of central Italy. This was a period of demographic growth, increase in sociopolitical complexity, and social stratification. Early states were developing from simpler forms of social aggregation, and expansionistic, large-scale warfare was beginning. I analyzed the mechanical properties of Iron Age human skeletons (844 individuals) from 11 necropoleis belonging to the Oscan ethno-linguistic group (Samnites). The analysis of grave goods allowed for a division of individuals by status categories. Iron Age samples show an increase in stature compared …

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday Jul 2013

"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday

Anthropology ETDs

This paper analyzes the secrets revealed by Korean high school girls. Despite their struggles being known to the Korean public-at-large, the majority of these secrets express the students dismay at not meeting the high standards expected of teenage girls in successfully preparing for the future. In this case study, the public airing of the otherwise silenced acknowledgement of the authors' perceived deficiencies and failures illuminates processes of biopower (the subject-based regulation and disciplining of bodies) embedded within the Korean nation-state building project. I explore how the Neo-Confucian principles of reverence, obedience, and self-cultivation work together with the neoliberal, post-industrial consumerist …

Crosstalk Between Adipocytes And Immune Cells In Adipose Tissue In An Obese Inflammatory State: Role Of Contact-Mediated Signaling, Carolina Franco Nitta Jul 2013

Crosstalk Between Adipocytes And Immune Cells In Adipose Tissue In An Obese Inflammatory State: Role Of Contact-Mediated Signaling, Carolina Franco Nitta

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is defined as heightened fat accumulation leading to health impairments. It has been directly correlated to cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Heightened cytokine levels are found in serum and adipose tissue of obese subjects, including TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha), IL-6 (interleukin-6), and MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1), being characterized as a chronic low-grade inflammatory disease. In this dissertation, I have generated a novel co-culture model between adipocytes and immune cells (derived from splenocytes) that mimics inflammation seen in obese adipose tissue. This co-culture model allows for distinct evaluation between secreted paracrine factors (indirect cultures) and these …

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan Jul 2013

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is an emerging infectious virus with a 60% fatality rate in humans. In the United States, a vaccine for H5N1 has been developed and stockpiled using FDA approved methods for seasonal vaccines; however, the H5N1 vaccine was shown to be less immunogenic than seasonal vaccines when evaluated in clinical trials. Adjuvants can be used to enhance the immune response to antigens. For the studies described herein, a lethal mouse model of H5N1 infection was utilized to examine the immune response to the H5N1 vaccine with and without the addition of an alum adjuvant, and …

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins Jul 2013

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

We evaluated the visual response to infrared (IR) in humans after dark adaptation. In seven adult participants, visual perception, visual sensitivity, and the visual response to IR after light adaptation were tested. Over the course of dark adaptation, we found visual perception and sensitivity to our experimental IR stimulus increased, while the relative IR intensity necessary for perception decreased. Visual perception of the IR stimulus was abolished during a transient light exposure; however, when turned back off, perception to the IR stimulus returned for all participants. These novel findings may be relevant for both pre-clinical and clinical visual research.

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers Jul 2013

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

B-cell malignancies like Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL), which often have high numbers of malignant cells in circulation in the blood would be an excellent model system for the early preclinical development and testing of targeted small particle therapeutics. We selected the transmembrane protein CD19 (Cluster of Differentiation 19) as one potential promising target due to its remarkably common over-expression on nearly every case of B-ALL, and on many other types of leukemias and lymphomas with varying frequency. We attempted to create a panel of appropriate CD19-specific targeting reagents for attachment to the surface of perhaps many different small particle platforms …

Contested Knowledges: A Rhetorical Analysis Of 'Eclipses For Austin' By Pablo Vargas Lugo At The Intersection Of Art And Science, Carlos Rodrigo Guzman

Communication ETDs

The debate on whether art has any cognitive value might be traced to the texts of early philosophers and theorists who have approached the matter. In general, art has been constrained to contemplation and aesthetic experience while its contribution to knowledge is often disregarded. Science, on the other hand, constitutes the main system of organized knowledge production and enunciation. Contemporary artistic practices that address scientific knowledge tend to reformulate the latter in order to either produce new experiences with it or expand its cognitive capabilities. The works produced by these practices serve as artifacts that expose science's biases, axiomatic tenets, …

Traversing Invitational Spaces: The Beautiful Iraqi Women Project, Carmen Lowry Jul 2013

Traversing Invitational Spaces: The Beautiful Iraqi Women Project, Carmen Lowry

Communication ETDs

The Beautiful Iraqi Women project was a short-term participatory research project co-designed and co-facilitated with Iraqi refugee women. Pragmatic project goals were to learn about Iraqi refugees' resettlement experiences and create accessible and welcoming entries into the different spaces that govern refugee resettlement processes. Theoretical goals were concerned with learning how invitational rhetoric concepts of safety, immanent value, self-determination, and sharing perspectives contribute to achieving the pragmatic goals. Research questions framing this project were: RQ1: How is invitational rhetoric constructed in a short-term project with Iraqi refugee women? RQ2: In this invitational space, what do Iraqi participants' shared perspectives reveal …

Tensions In (Agri)Culture: The Negotiation Of Environmental Dialectics At An Urban Farmers Market', Jason Boys Jul 2013

Tensions In (Agri)Culture: The Negotiation Of Environmental Dialectics At An Urban Farmers Market', Jason Boys

Communication ETDs

The following study shows how dialectal tensions in environmental discourse are negotiated and serve to create and sustain the culture of an urban farmers market. Using theories of cultural communication as both theoretical grounding and methodology, the author was able to identify and interpret the functions of tensions previously presented by scholars in the field of communication. The principal set of tensions used for data analysis is the three dialectics presented by Milstein (2009) — mastery/harmony, othering/connection, exploitation/idealism. Upon analysis of these dialectics, a reoccurring theme emerged — discursive tension between economic advancement and community advancement. Cultural discourse analysis points …

Women's Toolkits: Engendering Paleoindian Technological Organization, Susan M. Ruth Jul 2013

Women's Toolkits: Engendering Paleoindian Technological Organization, Susan M. Ruth

Anthropology ETDs

Archaeologists have long studied hunting strategies and weapons technology of the Paleoindian period of North America, dating to the close of the Pleistocene more than 10,000 years ago. Less well understood are womens activities, the toolkits they used, and how gendered activities can be recognized in the archaeological record. I use a number of lines of inquiry, including ethnographic review, cross-cultural analysis, and archaeological investigation, to address these questions. Because the Paleoindian record consists largely of flaked stone, investigating gendered activities is challenging, particularly if women did not use stone tools to any great extent. Examination of the historic and …

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross Jun 2013

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A major challenge for construction stormwater permit holders in New Mexico is the closure of their Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) through successful revegetation of the post-construction sites. Successful revegetation of native plants is a difficult task to achieve. Without proper guidance, the SWPPP permit closure goal is exceptionally difficult to achieve in New Mexico. This paper examines comprehensive seeding guidance designed for contractors or other individuals without seeding experience that are responsible for permanent soil stabilization. When accurately followed and appropriately budgeted, the seeding guidance document developed in conjunction with this paper and presented in Appendix I should greatly …

The Microbial Link In Ecosystem Processing In The East Fork Of The Jemez River : Extracellular Enzyme Response To Habitat, Seasonal Fluctuations, And Wildfire Disturbance, Susan G. Kutvirt Jun 2013

The Microbial Link In Ecosystem Processing In The East Fork Of The Jemez River : Extracellular Enzyme Response To Habitat, Seasonal Fluctuations, And Wildfire Disturbance, Susan G. Kutvirt

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Mounting evidence suggests that a warming climate in the southwestern United States threatens the quality and quantity of mountain source waters for New Mexicos largest surface water source, the Rio Grande. These waters, fed primarily by snowmelt, are critical to the ecological, agricultural, municipal, and cultural requirements of New Mexico. In an effort to construct a baseline of stream metabolism in the East Fork of the Jemez River (EFJR), a major tributary of the Rio Grande, our research team sampled macrophytes, algae, macroinvertebrates, and benthic microbial communities to assess changes pertaining to habitat and seasonal fluctuations and in response to …

The Rebirth Of Catholic Collective Action In Central America: A New Model Of Church-Based Political Participation, Stacy Keogh, Richard L. Wood Jun 2013

The Rebirth Of Catholic Collective Action In Central America: A New Model Of Church-Based Political Participation, Stacy Keogh, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

We analyze a new effort at collective political mobilization, sponsored by the Catholic Church in Central America following the demobilization of church-linked liberationist movements since the early 1990s. The current effort strives to re-project social Catholicism into the public arena by drawing on traditional Catholic structures, the cultural legacy of liberationist Catholicism, and a model of democratic organizing promoted by the PICO National Network in the United States. Drawing primarily on ethnographic and interview data, we explain the initial success of the effort in the light of the literature on resource mobilization, mobilizing structures, and the cultural dynamics of social …

Life History And Morphometric Variation Of Gambusia Nobilis At Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Alyssa Renee Hopkins

Biology ETDs

The Pecos Gambusia, Gambusia nobilis, is an endangered, live bearing fish inhabiting sinkholes in a restricted range of the Pecos River Watershed in New Mexico and Texas. The sink holes at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge (BLNWR), Roswell, NM create isolated habitats with varying ecological conditions (habitat size, community composition, dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH). This ecological variation imposes unique selective pressures that may shape differences in life history characteristics and morphology between populations. The goals of this research were to characterize seasonal and population variation in 1) life history characteristics, 2) embryo development patterns, 3) morphology and 4) explore …

A Holarctic Perspective On Mammalian Evolution: The Evolutionary And Biogeographic History Of Red-Backed Voles And Their Close Relatives (Rodentia: Arvicolinae), Brooks A. Kohli

Biology ETDs

The influence of Quaternary environmental changes on demography and geographic distribution is paramount to understanding how contemporary genetic diversity is partitioned in high-latitude species. This history of change in northern ecosystems sets the stage for forecasting how species inhabiting tundra and boreal forest will respond to the ongoing shift in climate. Utilizing broad geographic and taxonomic sampling, a multilocus species tree approach, ecological niche models, and population genetic techniques, I investigate the evolutionary and biogeographic history of a Holarctic mammal, the northern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus) and the systematics of the tribe it belongs to, Clethrionomyini. This tribe of forest …

Molecular Control Of Muscle Patterning, Development And Stability In Drosophila, Elisa Mignon Labeau Dimenna May 2013

Molecular Control Of Muscle Patterning, Development And Stability In Drosophila, Elisa Mignon Labeau Dimenna

Biology ETDs

Muscle is a highly conserved and specialized tissue in animals. Failure of proper muscle patterning, maintenance and stability in animals can have variety of consequences for the individual. Mutations in loci that control muscle can result in death during embyogenesis, dysmorphism, and/or reduced lifespan after progressive muscle degeneration (Emery 2002, Mathews and Moore 2003, Amato and Griggs 2011). Muscle defects, such as these, have origins ranging from improper transcriptional control to direct sequence disruptions in proteins that play a wide variety of roles in the cell (Emery 2002, Mathews and Moore 2003, Amato and Griggs 2011). Thus, out of this …

Mitochondrial Genome Evolution In Pupillid Land Snails, Jason D. Marquardt May 2013

Mitochondrial Genome Evolution In Pupillid Land Snails, Jason D. Marquardt

Biology ETDs

Pupillid land snails (Family Pupillidae) are small (< 6mm) snails with a broad geographic distribution and often found in very high density in their habitat. The sequencing of the mitochondrial genome (mt genome) of three pupillid taxa has been undertaken to understand their genome evolution more fully. The Gastrocopta cristata mitochondrial genome is 14,060 bp in length and contains 13 protein coding genes, 2 rRNA genes and 22 tRNA genes. The Pupilla muscorum, and Vertigo pusilla genomes contain all of the same genes but are of differing total sizes, 14,149 bp and 14,078 bp respectively. The AT content of the three genomes is similar at ~71% A+T which is comparable to their closest sequenced relatives. There are no major gene rearrangements among the mt genomes of the three pupillids, but the positions of many tRNA genes differ from those of Albinaria caerulea. There is a genomic sequence region of high concentration of thymine on the leading strand of the mt genome that is shared among all three genomes as well as their relatives.

Habitat Preference Of Western Diamond-Backed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Atrox) At Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: An Analysis At Multiple Scales, Theresa Lorraine Mcinnes

Biology ETDs

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is located in central New Mexico in the Chihuahuan desert. Approximately 25% of the refuge spans the Rio Grande floodplain and consists of managed riparian and agriculture areas. The upland areas are dominated by creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), honey mesquite (Prosopis sp.), and four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens). Western diamond-backed rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) are habitat generalists of dry lowland areas and commonly use dry washes, Larrea and Prosopis desert, rocky slopes, scrub/grassland, man-made structures, and less commonly hydric habitats. A high diversity of vegetation types span the refuge and hydric and upland habitats are often …

Synaptic Zn2+ Release During Spreading Depolarizations: Implications For Ischemic Brain Injury, Russell Eugene Carter May 2013

Synaptic Zn2+ Release During Spreading Depolarizations: Implications For Ischemic Brain Injury, Russell Eugene Carter

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The expansion of the ischemic core into surrounding penumbral tissue has prompted researchers to finds ways to limit this progression in hopes of providing better outcomes for patients suffering from stroke. Current therapeutic strategies are limited, and new therapies that can be delivered at late time-points are needed. Zn2+ has been well documented to contribute to ischemic injury progression, and chelation of Zn2+ significantly improves neuronal survival, even when administered hours after the initial insult. However, determining the source of this Zn2+ and the toxic mechanisms involved in ischemia remain unclear. Over the past 10 years, clinical recordings have provided …

Protein Carbonylation, Protein Aggregation And Cell Death In A Murine Model Of Multiple Sclerosis, Anushka Dasgupta May 2013

Protein Carbonylation, Protein Aggregation And Cell Death In A Murine Model Of Multiple Sclerosis, Anushka Dasgupta

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Many studies have suggested that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of both multiple sclerosis (MS) and its animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Yet, the mechanism by which oxidative stress leads to tissue damage in these disorders is unclear. Recent work from our laboratory has revealed that protein carbonylation, a major oxidative modification caused by severe and/or chronic oxidative stress conditions, is elevated in MS and EAE. Furthermore, protein carbonylation has been shown to alter protein structure leading to misfolding/aggregation. These findings prompted me to hypothesize that carbonylated proteins, formed as a consequence of oxidative stress …
