Evaluating The Potential For Establishment Of Two Aquatic Invasive Plants In New Mexico, Constance Jones Aug 2013

Evaluating The Potential For Establishment Of Two Aquatic Invasive Plants In New Mexico, Constance Jones

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The spread of invasive aquatic plants is an issue of growing concern due to their ability to cause significant negative impacts to the water resources and aquatic environment where they proliferate. The New Mexico Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan, developed in response to this concern, identified Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (hydrilla), and Eichornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. (water hyacinth) as potential invasive weeds in the state and called for identification of the waterbodies at risk of invasion in New Mexico. To accomplish this, the suitable habitats of hydrilla and water hyacinth in New Mexico were predicted using an ecological niche model, …

The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia Jul 2013

The Real And Represented Ophelia: An Investigation Of Choreographing Women's Madness In Concert Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia

Theatre & Dance ETDs

The character Ophelia, from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, is an iconographic symbol and cultural emblem of beauty, death and madness. For over four hundred years, her vividly described and picturesque death has inspired the works of countless visual artists and theatrical performers. However, her presence in the larger cultural consciousness of society is not limited only to the realms of fine art, theatre, and literature. Throughout history, her influence has also spilled over into everyday perceptions and beliefs regarding the nature of women and madness. Particularly within Victorian England, Ophelia's character came to influence the recognition and diagnosis of madness in …

The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand Jul 2013

The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand

Geography ETDs

This research examines the attitudes and perceptions of residents in Catron County and Harding County, New Mexico regarding the Mexican gray wolf reintroduction program under the Endangered Species Act. Catron County is within the wolf recovery zone and residents must deal with consequences of having wolves in the area. Harding County is located on the opposite side of the state and is removed from the wolf reintroduction area. Understanding the perceived concerns and benefits of the wolf reintroduction program and if those concerns change based on geographic proximity to the reintroduction can reveal whether cultural biases or personal experience with …

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell Jul 2013

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell

Geography ETDs

The sugar plantation zone of Pernambuco, Brazil, with a conservative culture forged out of chattel slave history, has been the most challenging region for the Brazilian landless peasants movement to penetrate in order to implement agrarian reform. The movement founded the Frei Gondim Settlement in the heart of the region in 1994 in order to present an alternative to the pollution of sugar monoculture and the injustices of landlessness around it. This thesis holds that the settlement represents a true alternative, but that the juxtaposition of a settlement socially isolated from its surroundings with a mode of production in which …

The Gracioso In The Theater Of Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla: A Manifestation Of Carnivalesque Humor In Siglo De Oro Theater., Maria Conklin Jul 2013

The Gracioso In The Theater Of Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla: A Manifestation Of Carnivalesque Humor In Siglo De Oro Theater., Maria Conklin

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This study examines the humor employed by the stock comic figure, known as the gracioso, in the plays of Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, a major playwright of Early Modern Spanish Theater. The self-mocking nature of the humor employed by that theaters indispensable gracioso, with its subsequent prioritization of laughter, ties the comic figure to the then surviving medieval tradition of the popular carnivalesque. This tie lends the popular stock comic figure's humorous output an overall popular/carnivalesque identity that gives expression to a popular sub-culture. As a representative of the popular sub-culture, the stock comic figure's comical contribution, the laughter it …

Dual Language Teachers' Changing Views Of Spanish Literacy Teaching And Learning As Influenced By Critical Dialogue, Susana Ibarra Johnson Jul 2013

Dual Language Teachers' Changing Views Of Spanish Literacy Teaching And Learning As Influenced By Critical Dialogue, Susana Ibarra Johnson

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study grew out of a growing awareness of the severe lack of quality and authentic Spanish literacy instructional practices. There were two major purposes. The first was to examine the relationships between Dual Language (DL) teachers views on Spanish literacy instructional practices, their students', and the texts from which they taught to enact their practice. A second purpose was to identify and inform three DL educators of Spanish literacy pedagogical views so that they could consider those views in light of their current practices. The research design was three case studies of the three DL teachers and addressed four …

Americanization, Language Policy, And The Promise Of Education: Public School Formation And Educational Attainment In Albuquerque, New Mexico, And Nogales, Arizona, 1880-1942, Carlos Francisco Parra

History ETDs

This study analyzes the nature of identity formation discourses and processes in terms of race, gender, citizenship, and educational attainment at the turn of the twentieth century in the communities of Nogales, Arizona, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. This study articulates the labyrinthine nature of the lived experiences of Hispanics with respect to how externally-imposed ideas of social interaction manifested themselves in these borderlands communities. One of the themes of this work is the analysis of the role of early public schools in their effort to create a cohesive identity among their diverse students. In this analysis significant questions relating to …

History ETDs

This paper examines the early history of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument just beyond the time when Gran Quivira was set aside as a government reservation. It focuses on the Pueblo Indian and Spanish Colonial mission ruins now protected by the National Park Service, at the management units of Gran Quivira, Abó, and Quarai, while also placing the Salinas story into the broader historical context of New Mexico and U. S. West history. This is accomplished by a careful examination of the first hand accounts by individuals who visited the sites throughout this early period in their history, with a …

Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces Jul 2013

Maternal Modulation Of The Experience Of Novelty On Offspring Hormonal Stress Reactivity, Sarah Dinces

Psychology ETDs

Background: Studies have shown that both maternal and non-maternal environmental influences affect the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It remains unclear how these influences jointly interact to program offspring HPA function. Here, we test the hypothesis that non-maternal environmental effects on offspring HPA function depend contextually on maternal self-stress regulation. Methods: To examine individual differences in maternal self-stress regulation, mothers basal circulating and evoked corticosterone (CORT) response were measured shortly after weaning. The effects of the non-maternal environment were assessed by employing both the neonatal and the early adulthood novelty exposure procedures. The neonatal novelty exposure procedure occurred from …

Dual Neutral Particle Beam Interrogation Of Intermodal Shipping Containers For Special Nuclear Material, Rodney Keith Jul 2013

Dual Neutral Particle Beam Interrogation Of Intermodal Shipping Containers For Special Nuclear Material, Rodney Keith

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Intermodal shipping containers entering the United States provide an avenue to smuggle unsecured or stolen special nuclear material (SNM). The only direct method fielded to indicate the presence of SNM is by passive photon/neutron radiation detection. Active interrogation using neutral particle beams to induce fission in SNM is a method under consideration. One by-product of fission is the creation of fragments that undergo radioactive decay over a time period on the order of tens of seconds after the initial event. The delayed' gamma-rays emitted from these fragments over this period are considered a hallmark for the presence of SNM. A …

"3 Simple Words: We The People": Culture, Identity, And The Contentious Politics Of The Contemporary Tea Party Movement In Montana, Stacy Keogh Jul 2013

"3 Simple Words: We The People": Culture, Identity, And The Contentious Politics Of The Contemporary Tea Party Movement In Montana, Stacy Keogh

Sociology ETDs

The Tea Party is a social and political movement urging government accountability, individual fiscal responsibility, and personal liberty as outlined by the United States Constitution. In this dissertation, I examine the cultural components of the Montana Tea Party asking two primary research questions: (1) What are the cultural dynamics of the Tea Party? (2) How does this determine the way the Tea Party engages in contentious politics? I found that the way the Montana Tea Party utilizes the resources of religion to provide a culture structure familiar to participants. It utilizes religious rhetoric to provide familiarity to the nations civil …

Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley Jul 2013

Indigenous Knowledge, Land, History, And Health: The Construction Of Diabetes On The White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, Tennille Marley

Sociology ETDs

American Indians and Alaska Natives are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and are more likely than the general population to suffer from diabetes-related complications. This study attempts to clarify the relationships between indigenous knowledge, land, local history/historical trauma, and diabetes on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation, using place' as an anchoring concept. The concept of place is largely absent in sociological literature, and a growing number of researchers argue that place should be central to sociology. Further, many researchers argue that place and context matter for health and are necessary for a deeper understanding of …

Skinning The Deer: A Love Story, Heather Campbell Jul 2013

Skinning The Deer: A Love Story, Heather Campbell

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation consists of a novel entitled Skinning the Deer: A Love Story. Alternating between the landscapes of New Mexico and rural Maine, the novel examines the life of tortured lesbian Hannah Huff and the brutal excision of her glorious wings—those magical appendages she grew in secret—the two downy white miracles she believed would be her ticket out of Monkstown, Maine, a desperate landscape of backwoods trailers, dogs, and family members, where her only interactions are either detached or violent. While the novel alternates between Hannah as an adult and Hannah as a child, it is first and foremost a …

Private Matters: The Place Of Privacy In English Legal Records, Romances, And Letters, 1300-1500, Christine Kozikowski Jul 2013

Private Matters: The Place Of Privacy In English Legal Records, Romances, And Letters, 1300-1500, Christine Kozikowski

English Language and Literature ETDs

As a result of the growth of cities and the rise of a merchant class in later medieval England, the desire for privacy began to emerge alongside an increase in personal consciousness. In my dissertation, I examine the place of privacy in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century England by juxtaposing elements of the private such as access, intimacy, and withdrawal in historical documents such as court records and marriage customs against canonical literature including, but not only, Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Malory's Le Morte Darthur. My study explains the dynamics between privacy and place in …

La Chute De La Femme-Objet:Comment Catherine Breillat Intègre Son Discours Érotique Féminin À La Conceptualisation De La Femme-Sujet, À Travers La Caméra, Dans Ses Deux Films Anatomie De L'Enfer Et À Ma Soeur, Ojana Albuquerque Jul 2013

La Chute De La Femme-Objet:Comment Catherine Breillat Intègre Son Discours Érotique Féminin À La Conceptualisation De La Femme-Sujet, À Travers La Caméra, Dans Ses Deux Films Anatomie De L'Enfer Et À Ma Soeur, Ojana Albuquerque

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

La chute de la femme-objet: comment Catherine Breillat intègre son discours érotique féminin à la conceptualisation de la femme-sujet, à travers la caméra, dans ses deux films Anatomie de l’Enfer et À ma sœur probes the ties between the formation of women’s subjectivity in Breillat’s movies, its results in cinematographic sphere and its impact on spectators. On the movie screen, what was then unknown provokes deep reactions for showing us representations that go towards, against, and beyond our ontological experience as spectators. This sense of reality is highly prolific, since, by feeling restless, we start posing questions and thus, we …

Embracing Evil: The Threat And Allure Of The Female In Greek Poetry, Caley S. Mcguill Jul 2013

Embracing Evil: The Threat And Allure Of The Female In Greek Poetry, Caley S. Mcguill

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Modern scholars have often noted the harsh depictions of women in Greek literature and account for them as simply part of the tradition of Greek misogyny' that exists throughout ancient Greek texts from the archaic period to classical times. This project argues that these sentiments, which have so often been described as 'Greek misogyny' in literature, in fact embody a more complicated and nuanced concept. My objective in this project is to explore the ways in which select 'misogynistic' Greek texts express what I call 'gyno-anxiety': the fear that arises from male vulnerability to and dependence upon women, who represent …

"Every 'One' And Every 'Thing' Can Be Loved": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Networked Self-Representation By The Objectùm Sexuality Community, Kristen L. Cole Jul 2013

"Every 'One' And Every 'Thing' Can Be Loved": A Rhetorical Analysis Of Networked Self-Representation By The Objectùm Sexuality Community, Kristen L. Cole

Communication ETDs

Using rhetorical criticism informed by actor-network theory (ANT), in this dissertation I explore the emergence of queer identity and queer community building within the Objectùm Sexuality Internationale Web site (OSI)--the largest source of information related to a community of over 300 hundred individuals who experience emotional and romantic desire towards objects. My goals in this study are (1) to identify and understand how rhetorical strategies are emergent and networked (rather than individually enacted) within the OSI Web site; and (2) how these emergent rhetorical strategies promote multiplicity of sexual desire and identity through the challenging of heteronormative and anthropocentric binaries …

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira Jul 2013

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira

Latin American Studies ETDs

The borderline that currently divides the island of Hispaniola has undergone a complicated process of definition. Since colonial times, central authorities have claimed the area while contradictorily ignoring the societies that developed in the region. It was not until the first decades of the twentieth century that the two countries were officially divided and a borderline was enforced. The massacre of approximately 15,000 Haitians ordered by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1937 is the event that brought attention to the border nationalization process. In my research I argue that the conflict between the two countries had both an economic …

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan Jul 2013

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Impaired wound healing is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a consequence of diabetes and are formed from non-enzymatic reactions between glucose and proteins. The accumulation of AGEs is believed to disrupt wound repair and alter protein function. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and a downstream effector, Snai2/Slug, are key regulators of reepithelialization, a vital component of wound healing. Reepithelialization requires keratinocyte proliferation and migration. Therefore, we examined the impact of AGEs on these EGF-stimulated responses. In this dissertation, I present evidence for a critical role of Snai2 in diabetes-impaired wound reepithelialization, extending …

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien Jul 2013

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation focuses on developing the means to investigate social organization of communal hunting among egalitarian groups. Communal hunting represents an alternative subsistence strategy that takes advantage of seasonal aggregation of prey species. To maximize returns from these large herds, human foraging groups opt to cooperate with additional groups that otherwise maintain their political independence during the rest of the year. Yet, what is not clear is whether these temporary large camps maintain their egalitarian ethos, giving an equal voice to all members or if the participants adopt an alternative social and political structure. This dissertation uses the case study …

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock Jul 2013

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) suffer from increased mortality because of complications from metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Excess sympathetic nervous activity and catecholamine exposure contribute to the disease associations of OSA, but the underlying mechanism remains enigmatic. Because catecholamines cause overgrowth of bacteria in the class Enterobacteriaceae in the laboratory, this translational study proposed a role for altered gut microbiota in the complications of OSA. Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that catecholamine excess in disordered sleep alters intestinal microbiota by comparing urinary catecholamines and the fecal microbiome of 24 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 23 controls. Results: …

Scaling Of Crop Diversity And Optimal Allocation Of Foodshed Infrastructure, Michael Chang Jul 2013

Scaling Of Crop Diversity And Optimal Allocation Of Foodshed Infrastructure, Michael Chang

Biology ETDs

Food hubs are organizations that manage the aggregation and distribution of local products, and are a small, but growing means to satisfy high demand for diverse, healthy diets. However, economic barriers inhibit small producers and distributors from developing mainstream, local consumer alternatives to industrial-scale products. To build foodshed, distribution hubs could help overcome these challenges by reducing costs through shared refrigeration, processing, and transportation infrastructure. However, there is no theory to help plan them. I present and test theory to allocate foodshed infrastructure based on insight by Dunn, et al. (2011) that Shannon diversity measured relative to a whole set …

Mhc And Mate Choice In Anolis Sagrei, Angela S. Hung Jul 2013

Mhc And Mate Choice In Anolis Sagrei, Angela S. Hung

Biology ETDs

The study of sexual selection saw its intrepid inception when Charles Darwin observed the earnest with which many male birds must court a female before she will, but often not, mate with him. His idea of the choosy female' was a radical one in the Victorian era when women were regarded as the 'passive sex. In the century and a half that followed, sexual selection driven by female choice is now widely accepted and strongly supported. Today, with emerging technologies, the nuances and complexities of sexual reproductive are finally coming to light. Female choice in two species is described here. …

Sympatric Speciation Is Reinforced By Predation, Parasite Load, Reproductive Character Displacement, And Sexual Selection In Two Species Flocks Of Pupfish (Cyprinodon Spp), Rhiannon J. D. West Jul 2013

Sympatric Speciation Is Reinforced By Predation, Parasite Load, Reproductive Character Displacement, And Sexual Selection In Two Species Flocks Of Pupfish (Cyprinodon Spp), Rhiannon J. D. West

Biology ETDs

Sympatric speciation, the divergence of one lineage into two or more lineages within one geographic range, is often driven by disruptive selection on niche utilization. While niche specialization is found in sympatrically speciated groups, it is often reinforced by other strong selective pressure. This dissertation examines the role of predation, morphology, mate choice, and parasite load in maintaining reproductive isolation in two sympatrically speciated species flocks of pupfish (Cyprinodon). The role that predation, morphology and male and female mate choice play in reproductive isolation is examined in the Bahamian species flock. To examine the role of predation, we focus on …
