The Delaware Indians And The Development Of Prairie-Style Beadwork, Denise Neil-Binion May 2013

The Delaware Indians And The Development Of Prairie-Style Beadwork, Denise Neil-Binion

Art & Art History ETDs

At the time of European contact, the Native Americans of North America had a long-standing tradition of decorating their clothing and other objects of personal adornment. This activity extended beyond ornamentation to encompass significant cultural practices associated with their concepts of well-being and wealth. The coming of the white man to North America had immediate and far-reaching impact on the Indians that included their manner of dress as they incorporated trade goods such as glass beads and woven cloth into their clothing. The Delaware were regarded as the grandfathers or original people' by the Eastern Woodlands Indians. The story of …

Spanish Missionization And Maya Social Structure: Skeletal Evidence For Labor Distribution At Tipu, Belize, Lara Kristen Noldner May 2013

Spanish Missionization And Maya Social Structure: Skeletal Evidence For Labor Distribution At Tipu, Belize, Lara Kristen Noldner

Anthropology ETDs

The cultural and human biological outcomes of Spanish colonization of the Americas were diverse. This dissertation examines the effects of Spanish colonization on Maya social structure using skeletal evidence for the distribution of labor at Tipu, a mission site in west central Belize. Skeletal remains of indigenous Maya buried in the context of a church, and in accordance with European Catholic burial customs, were examined for enthesis development and the cross-sectional morphology (CSG) of upper and lower limb long bones. Nothing besides burial placement in relation to the church (inside or outside the walls) denotes social status among individuals. Bone …

Scaling In The Immune System, Soumya Banerjee May 2013

Scaling In The Immune System, Soumya Banerjee

Computer Science ETDs

How different is the immune system in a human from that of a mouse? Do pathogens replicate at the same rate in different species? Answers to these questions have impact on human health since multi-host pathogens that jump from animals to humans affect millions worldwide. It is not known how rates of immune response and viral dynamics vary from species to species and how they depend on species body size. Metabolic scaling theory predicts that intracellular processes are slower in larger animals since cellular metabolic rates are slower. We test how rates of pathogenesis and immune system response rates depend …

Neuropathogenesis Of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza In Ferrets Following Intranasal Instillation Or Aerosol Exposure To Low Doses, Jennifer Rose Plourde May 2013

Neuropathogenesis Of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza In Ferrets Following Intranasal Instillation Or Aerosol Exposure To Low Doses, Jennifer Rose Plourde

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), subtype H5N1, has continued to infect humans every year since its initial outbreak in 1997. The overall mortality is approximately 60% and while the emergence of this avian influenza virus has yet to reach the Western Hemisphere, its high lethality and pandemic potential warrant attention from the research community to better understand HPAI disease. Neuroinvasiveness of H5N1 virus is poorly understood and using two HPAI strains of varying lethality in the ferret model provide a basis for comparing differences in neuropathogenesis and its contribution to lethality. The studies described herein used two methods of HPAI …

Induction Of Interleukin-10 Within The T(H)17 Effector Population Using The Gper Agonist G-1, Ryan Lennex Brunsing May 2013

Induction Of Interleukin-10 Within The T(H)17 Effector Population Using The Gper Agonist G-1, Ryan Lennex Brunsing

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

A critical mechanism in immune homeostasis is the ability to stop an ongoing inflammatory response once the inciting agent has been destroyed or neutralized. Failure to do so can lead to autoimmune disease. One mechanism the immune system utilizes to self regulate is the secretion of immunosuppressive cytokines. For example, the cytokine interleukin-10 (IL10) is a potent suppressor of numerous key immune cell populations. Among the cells that secrete IL10 are several subsets of the CD4+ T cell family. As CD4+ T cells are commonly found within diseased tissue in the setting of autoimmune disease, medications capable of inducing IL10 …

Display Of Peptides And Single-Chain Antibodies On Bacteriophage Ms2 Virus-Like Particles, Christopher Andrew Lino May 2013

Display Of Peptides And Single-Chain Antibodies On Bacteriophage Ms2 Virus-Like Particles, Christopher Andrew Lino

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Phage display is a powerful technology for selection of novel binding functions from large populations of peptide or antibody fragments. From a sufficiently complex library, phage bearing peptides or antibodies with practically any desired binding activity can be physically isolated by affinity selection, and, since each particle carries in its genome the genetic information for its own replication, the selectants can be amplified in bacteria. Existing display systems are based mostly on the filamentous phage M13. It is a powerful technology, but it has limitations for certain applications. Our work has concentrated on development of a new display platform based …

Progeny Release Of Species B Human Adenoviruses Is Not Mediated By Early Region 3 Proteins 20.1k, 20.5k, And 10.9k, James Andrew Dowling May 2013

Progeny Release Of Species B Human Adenoviruses Is Not Mediated By Early Region 3 Proteins 20.1k, 20.5k, And 10.9k, James Andrew Dowling

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The early region 3 (E3) of the human adenovirus (HAdV) genome encodes proteins that regulate the host immune response to viral infection. The E3 region also exhibits the highest level of genetic diversity among the genomes of the six (A-F) species of HAdV. This diversity in genetic content is found primarily between the highly conserved E3-gp19K and RIDα open reading frames (ORFs). It has been previously shown that HAdV-C encodes the adenovirus death protein (ADP) in this location. ADP is an 11.6kDa, transmembrane protein that localizes to the nuclear membrane, and facilitates the efficient release of progeny virions. HAdV-B1 encodes …

Roswell Visioning Plan, Anne Godfrey, Jose Zelaya Mar 2013

Roswell Visioning Plan, Anne Godfrey, Jose Zelaya

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

It is our strong belief that economic and community development go hand in hand, and that there cannot be success in one without equal accomplishment in the other. Our project area, as seen on the next page, reflects this belief. It includes not only the entire strip of East Second Street between Main and Atkinson, but Garden Avenue and the residential neighborhoods to the north and south as well. The class was divided into five groups, each responsible for recommending designs for a prescribed geographic area.

A Preliminary Exploration Of The Relationship Between Gray And White Matter Neurometabolites, Neuropsychological Function, And Functional Impairment In Young Adults With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Erica Quinn Montague Jan 2013

A Preliminary Exploration Of The Relationship Between Gray And White Matter Neurometabolites, Neuropsychological Function, And Functional Impairment In Young Adults With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Erica Quinn Montague

Psychology ETDs

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has gained acceptance as a neurobiological disorder, supported by a growing body of literature that documents differences in brain structure and function in individuals diagnosed with ADHD. There is growing interest in exploring patterns of neurometabolite concentrations through the methods of proton spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Previous studies have employed single voxel techniques, examining neurometabolite concentrations in small, localized regions of brain tissue. This study is the first to employ Spectroscopic Imaging (SI), which allows for acquisition of neurometabolite spectra from a larger sample of brain tissue, in the cerebral cortex of individuals diagnosed with ADHD. Nine …

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich Jan 2013

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich

American Studies ETDs

In the 1920s, Americans grew increasingly interested in the figure of the primitive man, who was championed as the antidote to civilization's weakening effects on the modern human spirit. Concurrently in the field of American Studies, Vernon Lewis Parrington theorized about the effects of the "broad currents" of American life. the return to a primitive, natural self was just such a “broad current” of the day. With primitive conduct as the potential salve for civilized humanity, a handful of American authors of the 1920s used fake autobiographies to articulate the savage internal self. In the four texts that comprise this …

Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas Jan 2013

Human Inspired Pattern Recognition Via Local Invariant Features, Dominic Ron Maestas

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Vision is increasingly becoming a vital element in the manufacturing industry. As complex as it already is, vision is becoming even more difficult to implement in a pattern recognition environment as it converges toward the level of what humans visualize. Relevant brain work technologies are allowing vision systems to add capability and tasks that were long reserved for humans. The ability to recognize patterns like humans do is a good goal in terms of performance metrics for manufacturing activities. To achieve this goal, we created a neural network that achieves pattern recognition analogous to the human visual cortex using high …

The Effect Of Oral Glutamine Supplementation On Gut Permeability And Heat Shock Protein Regulation In Runners With A History Of Gastrointestinal Distress, Micah Zuhl Jan 2013

The Effect Of Oral Glutamine Supplementation On Gut Permeability And Heat Shock Protein Regulation In Runners With A History Of Gastrointestinal Distress, Micah Zuhl

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Gastrointestinal (GI) permeability increases during high intensity exercise leading to endotoxin leakage, and a pro-inflammatory immune response. The purpose of this study are to assess whether oral glutamine supplementation (1) reduces exercise induced permeability through up-regulation of the heat shock response resulting in occludin stabilization, and (2) depresses the exercise induced inflammatory response. Methods. Eight human subjects (n=8) participated in baseline (PRE) testing, a glutamine (GLN), and placebo (PLA) supplementation trial in a double blind design. After PRE measurements, subjects ingested .9g/kg fat free mass of glutamine per day or a sugar free lemon placebo drink for seven days with …

Groundwater, Economic, And Legal Analysis Of A Proposed Diversion From The San Agustin Basin Of New Mexico, David J. Reese Jan 2013

Groundwater, Economic, And Legal Analysis Of A Proposed Diversion From The San Agustin Basin Of New Mexico, David J. Reese

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A private corporation has proposed to export up to 54,000 acre-feet per year of groundwater from the San Agustin basin of central New Mexico for use within the Rio Grande basin. This water would be used for eleven stated purposes. Concerns have been expressed regarding the hydrologic, economic, environmental, and legal consequences. Sustainability of the water supply is an issue, as are effects on the neighboring Rio Grande and Gila River watersheds. A system dynamics model of groundwater and its relationship to the local economy in the basin was developed to explore some of these issues. Subsurface flow between six …

A Robust Patch-Based Synthesis Framework For Combining Inconsistent Images, Aliakbar Darabi Jan 2013

A Robust Patch-Based Synthesis Framework For Combining Inconsistent Images, Aliakbar Darabi

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Current methods for combining different images produce visible artifacts when the sources have very different textures and structures, come from far view points, or capture dynamic scenes with motions. In this thesis, we propose a patch-based synthesis algorithm to plausibly combine different images that have color, texture, structural, and geometric inconsistencies. For some applications such as cloning and stitching where a gradual blend is required, we present a new method for synthesizing a transition region between two source images, such that inconsistent properties change gradually from one source to the other. We call this process image melding. For gradual blending, …

Estimation And Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Under Intermittent Information With Applications To Multi-Agent Robotics, Domagoj Tolic Jan 2013

Estimation And Stability Of Nonlinear Control Systems Under Intermittent Information With Applications To Multi-Agent Robotics, Domagoj Tolic

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation investigates the role of intermittent information in estimation and control problems and applies the obtained results to multi-agent tasks in robotics. First, we develop a stochastic hybrid model of mobile networks able to capture a large variety of heterogeneous multi-agent problems and phenomena. This model is applied to a case study where a heterogeneous mobile sensor network cooperatively detects and tracks mobile targets based on intermittent observations. When these observations form a satisfactory target trajectory, a mobile sensor is switched to the pursuit mode and deployed to capture the target. The cost of operating the sensors is determined …

Linguistic And Cultural Factors Associated With Phonemic Fluency Performance In Bilingual Hispanics, Jennifer Bennett Jan 2013

Linguistic And Cultural Factors Associated With Phonemic Fluency Performance In Bilingual Hispanics, Jennifer Bennett

Psychology ETDs

Verbal fluency tasks are used extensively in clinical settings because of their sensitivity to a wide variety of disorders, including cognitive decline and dementia, and their usefulness in differential diagnoses. However, the effects of bilingualism on neuropsychological assessment, and verbal fluency in particular, are currently not completely understood. There is an increasing need to examine bilingualisms role in assessing verbal fluency due to the rapidly growing Hispanic population within the United States. This study investigated the performance of bilingual Hispanics in phonemic fluency compared to monolingual European-Americans using the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT). Both the standard letters of …
