The Social Construction And Broaden-Build Effects Of Appreciation, Recognition, And Reward At Work As Portrayed In Four Contemporary Films, Andrew Gavin Leach
Communication ETDs
Many employees feel underappreciated, unrecognized, and undervalued in todays corporate, white collar environment (Herman& Dasborough, 2008; Ariani, D. W. 2013). Global economic crises, rising housing prices and high unemployment have all contributed to the prevailing thought that it an employee should just be happy with having a job. However, many organizations have found that evoking positive emotion in the workplace is a win-win situation for them and their employees (Lutgen-Sandvik, Riforgiate & Fletcher, 2009). In order to investigate what is enacted to produce positivity in the workplace, this project applied content analysis to four commercial film dated 2004 to 2013. …
Impact Of Environmental Enrichment On Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis In A Preclinical Mouse Model Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd), Kenta Kajimoto
Impact Of Environmental Enrichment On Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis In A Preclinical Mouse Model Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd), Kenta Kajimoto
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Alcohol is a potent teratogen to the developing CNS, and moderate-heavy alcohol intake during pregnancy causes fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). These patients display CNS symptoms associated with developmental deficits, cognitive impairment and social abnormalities, with structural impairments in several brain regions. In this dissertation, we investigated the role of FASD in neurogenic functional deficits in the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus. The dentate gyrus is a subregion of the hippocampus that displays unique plasticity, in that new dentate granule neurons are continuously produced throughout life. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is thought to play key roles in …

The Effects Of Intestinal Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria On Cognitive Behavior And Intestinal Transit In Mice, Nathaniel Ritz
Biology ETDs
This research reports the effects of two metabolic groups of bacteria on physiological activity and cognitive function in C57BL/6 mice. In one experiment, the mice on a diet supplemented with red kidney bean for 24 hr were able to complete an eight-arm radial learning maze in a shorter time than mice on a diet without red kidney beans. The median time required for mice to complete the maze when fed red kidney beans was 118 sec while the median time for mice on standard diet to finish the maze was 270 sec. Based on the cycle threshold values when using …

Abiotic Drivers Of Chihuahuan Desert Plant Communities, Laura Marie Ladwig
Abiotic Drivers Of Chihuahuan Desert Plant Communities, Laura Marie Ladwig
Biology ETDs
Within grasslands, precipitation, fire, nitrogen (N) addition, and extreme temperatures influence community composition and ecosystem function. The differential influences of these abiotic factors on Chihuahuan Desert grassland communities was examined within the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, located in central New Mexico, U.S.A. Although fire is a natural disturbance in many grasslands, fire during drought temporarily increased forb cover and decreased grass cover for several years. The seasonal timing of fire was not important, rather community recovery was more influenced by the persistent drought conditions. N deposition is increasing worldwide due to human activities, and although additional N increases productivity and …
"Hey, Y'Guys!": A Diachronic Usage-Based Approach To Changes In American English Address, Ben Sienicki
"Hey, Y'Guys!": A Diachronic Usage-Based Approach To Changes In American English Address, Ben Sienicki
Linguistics ETDs
This dissertation adopts a functional, usage-based perspective on language to highlight key changes in American English address over the past century, especially the development of 'you guys' and its expansion across second-person plural contexts. Based on data from the Corpus of Historical American English and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (among other corpora), the study tracks the increasing usage, gradual restructuring, semantic generalization, and shifting registers of 'you guys', including the interactions of those changes as the form has grammaticalized. This work offers an explanation, therefore, as to why 'you guys' has been uniquely reshaped into a pronominal unit …

Novel Α-Msh Peptide Analogs For Melanoma Targeting, Adam Michael Flook
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Skin cancer is the one of the most diagnosed cancers in the United States with increasing incidence over the past two decades. There are three major forms of skin cancer but melanoma is the deadliest. It is estimated that 76,690 new diagnoses of melanoma and 9,480 deaths will occur in 2013. Melanoma accounts for approximately 1.6% of all cancer related deaths and is the 5th leading diagnosed cancer in the United States. The mean survival rate of patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma is six months, with five year survival rates of less than 5%. In this project, we describe the …
Development Of Hpv Next-Generation Virus-Like Particle Vaccines That Are Cross-Protective, Mitchell Ryan Tyler
Development Of Hpv Next-Generation Virus-Like Particle Vaccines That Are Cross-Protective, Mitchell Ryan Tyler
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Virus-like particles (VLPs) comprised of viral structural proteins that self-assemble into particles resembling the native virion represent a relatively novel vaccine development strategy. Both safe and immunogenic, VLPs can be used as vaccines against the virus from which they are derived, but can also be used to present heterologous epitopes from other pathogens to the immune system. Both techniques result in high-titer antibody responses against the target epitope. Indeed, vaccines of VLPs are already available, including the two vaccines targeting Human Papillomavirus (HPV). These vaccines are very effective at preventing infection by the HPV types included in their formulation; high-risk …

Background: Patient provision of informed consent is foundational to medical decision- making. However, clinical informed consent is not as well studied as consent for research. Cardiac catheterization (CC) is a complex medical procedure with many potential variations, making informed consent challenging. Objective: To determine patient and provider attitudes toward the informed consent process for CC and to test a new measure for measuring patient capacity to consent for CC. Design: A mixed methods pilot study. Setting: Academic medical center. Participants: 8 patients who consented for non-emergent CC, cardiology fellows and faculty (21 surveyed, 7 interviewed). Measurements: Patients and providers underwent …
Targeted Cancer Nanotherapeutics By Adoptive Transfer Of Mononuclear Splenocytes, Jaclyn Murton
Targeted Cancer Nanotherapeutics By Adoptive Transfer Of Mononuclear Splenocytes, Jaclyn Murton
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
The most common cause of cancer deaths among women is breast cancer. Current breast cancer chemotherapies rely on passive diffusion of the drug into the tumor interior, which leads to a sub-optimal drug concentration in some tumor regions. One important goal for cancer pharmaceutics is optimizing drug targeting to tumors. We propose to develop active drug delivery, mediated by the patient's immune cells. We hypothesize that circulating monocytes, known to infiltrate tumors, are effective biologically-active carriers of multifunctional nanoparticles. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MS) were isolated from the spleens of transgenic mice that are immunocompetent and spontaneously develop mammary tumors. …

Cultures Of Exile: Conversations On Language And The Arts, Eleni Bastéa, Walter Putnam, Mark Forte
Faculty Publications
The conference “Cultures of Exile: Conversations on Language and the Arts,” co-organized by Professors Eleni Bastea and Walter Putnam, was inspired by the music of Georges Moustaki (1934--2013), especially his song “Le Métèque” (1969). In “Le Métèque” Moustaki dealt with outsiders, strangers, and all those who do not share one homogeneous place of origin. What does it mean to be a “métèque,” an exile, an outsider today? Although often associated with loss and victimhood, exile can also foster artistic freedom, creativity, renewal, and empowerment. What is the role of the new place in the development of one’s artistic oeuvre? How …

Considerations In Caring For Adults With Physical Disabilities, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Sarah Knox Morley
Publications
Most able bodied people are unaware of the daily challenges facing adults with disabilities. People with disabilities comprise a significant portion of the population. These individuals are likely to utilize health care services frequently due to co-morbidities and issues related to aging with a disability. This syllabus outlines a course elective developed for medical students. The course is intended to provide learners with a broader understanding of the experiences of adults with disabilities and learn some techniques for improving health care interactions with physically disabled patients.
