A Standalone High Frequency Receiver System, Orlando Leone Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The High Frequency Receiver System (HFRS) is a mobile, autonomous, Linux-based RF recording system that is designed to pick up ionosonde sounding signals from 1—10 MHz. Systems are designed for quick deployment and capable of remaining deployed in the field for up to a month. The design motivation was for ionospheric sounding campaigns in New Mexico organized by the Air Force Research Labora- tories (AFRL). The systems are calibrated to selected sites and thus require Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) characterization of the sites. The project includes building and using four standalone systems with associated power, antenna, RF, and remote control …

Envisioning The Farms Of The Future: In Pursuit Of Sustainable Agriculture In The Rio Grande Valley, Matthew Draper
Envisioning The Farms Of The Future: In Pursuit Of Sustainable Agriculture In The Rio Grande Valley, Matthew Draper
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis attempts to define the parameters that characterize sustainable agriculture on the level of an individual farm in the context of the central Rio Grande valley. Using historical sources about New Mexican agriculture, contemporary scientific literature and interviews with practicing farmers in the region, it develops a vision for the shape that farms must take in order to sustain agriculture in the region indefinitely. In doing so, particular attention is paid to how farms can be successful in the present moment and prepare for a future defined by resource scarcity and climate change. It begins with a brief history …
An Experimental And Petrologic Investigation Of The Source Regions Of Lunar Magmatism In The Context Of The Primordial Differentiation Of The Moon, Stephen Elardo
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The primordial differentiation of the Moon via a global magma ocean has become the paradigm under which all lunar data are interpreted. The success of this model in explaining multiple geochemical, petrologic, and isotopic characteristics lunar geology has led to magma oceans becoming the preferred model for the differentiation of Earth, Mars, Mercury, Vesta, and other large terrestrial bodies. The goal of this work is to combine petrologic analyses of lunar samples with high pressure, high temperature petrologic experiments to place new and detailed constraints the petrogenetic processes that operated during different stages of lunar magmatism, the processes that have …
Using Nd Isotopes To Understand Changes In Continental Weathering Flux In Mid-Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Carbonate Cycles, Phil Ragonese
Using Nd Isotopes To Understand Changes In Continental Weathering Flux In Mid-Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Carbonate Cycles, Phil Ragonese
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Decades of study on Phanerozoic sedimentary deposits indicates that changes in Earth's orbital parameters are one of the main drivers of climate change on the 104-105 yr time scales, however understanding the relationships between climate change on coeval marine and continental deposits is difficult due to post-depositional erosion and tectonic processes. Nd isotopes measured in marine carbonates are a proxy for regional-scale continental weathering flux (CWF) and can help resolve these difficulties because its short residence time (less than ocean mixing times). This study focuses on cyclic Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) marine successions from the Pedregosa (Arizona) and Bird Spring (southern …

Population And Metapopulation Ecology Of Childhood Diseases, Christian E. Gunning
Population And Metapopulation Ecology Of Childhood Diseases, Christian E. Gunning
Biology ETDs
Researchers have long used mathematical models and empirical data to explore the population ecology of childhood diseases such as measles and whooping cough. These diseases have proven ideal model systems for studying population dynamics over space and time. Here we present a novel dataset of weekly measles and whooping cough case reports in pre-vaccine era U.S. cities and states, along with a previously- studied dataset of measles in England & Wales. We first estimate per-population disease reporting probabilities. We find that disease reporting is highly variable over space and between diseases, and correlated with socioeconomic covariates including ethnic composition and …

The Microbiome Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Liam T. Lowrey
Biology ETDs
Commensal organisms are an integral part of all vertebrates, contributing heavily to development, pathogen defense, and metabolism. Commensals reside at different body sites within vertebrate animals creating unique and distinct communities that vary between locations. The human microbiome project has revealed distinct bacterial community compositions at the diverse range of body sites that have been sampled, providing evidence for different functional purposes of each microbiome. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, serves as a model organism for the study of mucosal physiology and immunology. Teleost fish are evolutionarily important as one of the first jawed vertebrates with a dedicated adaptive mucosal immune …
Defining The Complexities Of Mef2 Function And Regulation In Drosophila, Tyanna L. Lovato
Defining The Complexities Of Mef2 Function And Regulation In Drosophila, Tyanna L. Lovato
Biology ETDs
The development of cardiac and somatic muscle is coordinated by many factors that are highly conserved across species. Mutations in the coding or regulatory sequences of a gene can alter the structure, function or levels of expression of the protein it encodes. We have identified the genetic mechanism underlying the temperature sensitive mutation in MEF2 (myocyte enhancer factor 2), which is required for the differentiation of all muscle lineages. In addition, we have identified a regulatory element upstream of the Mef2 gene that directs its expression from stage fourteen through the end of embryogenesis which is activated by the NK-homeobox …
Establishment Of Larrea Tridentata At The Northern Edge Of The Modern Mojave Desert: Insights From Neotoma Paleomiddens, Clare E. Steinberg
Establishment Of Larrea Tridentata At The Northern Edge Of The Modern Mojave Desert: Insights From Neotoma Paleomiddens, Clare E. Steinberg
Biology ETDs
Shifting climates affect the composition of biological communities. If environmental conditions change sufficiently, new species can invade, leading to large-scale community turnover. Understanding how and why such shifts occur is crucial in this era of anthropogenic global change. Paleontological studies provide a valuable long-term perspective of the dynamics of community turnover. Here, we examine changes in the plant community over the past 34 thousand years in what is now the northern Mojave Desert. This time period includes the last glacial maximum as well as numerous smaller climatic fluctuations in the Holocene and the end of the Pleistocene. We quantified plant …

Can The United States Control Its Natural Gas: International Trade Implications Of Restrictions On Liquefied Natural Gas Exports, Adam Eldean
Natural Resources Journal
This article examines the cross-section between energy, environmental, and international law while exploring the recent developments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to non-free trade agreement countries, and considers how international free trade agreements affect efforts to restrict or limit exports of LNG. The article discusses the environmental and economic impacts of large-scale exports of LNG, but argues that efforts to stifle LNG exports will ultimately fail regardless of potential negative impacts due to conflict with existing international trade agreements, including the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Since approval of export licenses …

Cold Inducible Rna Binding Protein Is Disrupted In Er+Pr+Her2- Tumors, Grace Anyango Okello
Cold Inducible Rna Binding Protein Is Disrupted In Er+Pr+Her2- Tumors, Grace Anyango Okello
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
RNA binding proteins (RBPs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) control gene expression post-transcriptionally by targeting mRNAs for translational activation, repression, or degradation. To date, aberrant expression of RBPs and miRNAs has been observed in many types of human cancers. We have shown the overexpression of Cold Inducible RNA binding protein (CIRP) in human breast cancer cell lines as compared to nontumorigenic and nontransformed breast epithelial cells. Others have shown cytoplasmic CIRP to be upregulated in a subset of breast tumors. Little is known about CIRP targets or its role in breast cancer. RBP Human antigen R (HuR), whose cytoplasmic localization is associated …

Within the Central New Mexico regional foodshed (i.e. within a 300 mile radius of Albuquerque), many women are working within the local food system to help locally grown food go from farm to fork. In certain roles, women predominate. In others, women are less represented. Women participating in the local food system provided their insights and expertise on how gender affects their own participation, as well as their perceptions of the gender division of labor within the local food system. Through this exploration, eleven women co-participants of this study found that regardless of the role, there are challenges based on …
Analyzing Navajo Discourse: Investigating Form And Function Of Intonational Units In Referential Discourse, Michele Kiser
Analyzing Navajo Discourse: Investigating Form And Function Of Intonational Units In Referential Discourse, Michele Kiser
Linguistics ETDs
Extensive research has been conducted on the Navajo verb complex (prefix morphology) and specific constructions (i.e. relative clause structure, subject-object-inversion), but to date the proposed establishment of a method to analyze actual discourse from a functional or usage based approach has not occurred. The goal of this study is twofold. The first is to establish a method to analyze spoken Navajo using the Intonation Units (IU) as a measure as it occurs in natural, uninterrupted speech, according to the parameters outlined by Chafe (1994), and show the influence of the morphological complexity of Navajo on the size of the IU. …
Mechanisms Responsible For Decreased Rat Pulmonary Arterial H2o2 Levels In A Model Of Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Danielle Rachel Plomaritas
Mechanisms Responsible For Decreased Rat Pulmonary Arterial H2o2 Levels In A Model Of Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension, Danielle Rachel Plomaritas
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Our laboratory has demonstrated an important role for acid-sensing ion channel 1 (ASIC1) in pulmonary hypertension through augmented Ca2+ influx in pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMC) following chronic hypoxia (CH). However, this enhanced calcium (Ca2+) influx is not dependent on an increase in ASIC1 protein expression. This suggests other regulatory mechanisms influencing ASIC1 activity are altered following CH. ASIC1 is a redox sensitive ion channel and recent studies from our laboratory have shown that the oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) inhibits ASIC1-dependent Ca2+ influx in PASMC. Reactive oxygen species are known to be altered in pulmonary hypertension, however the direction …

Walk Feminine, Talk Feminine:A Critical Textual Analysis Of Femininities,Performances, And Representations, Reslie Cortes
Communication ETDs
In this study I examine the multiple ways in which femininity is performed and how those performances intersect with race/ethnicity, class, and sexuality in the anime Bleach and Samurai Champloo. I also interrogate the implications of these performances in relation to hegemonic discourses of Japanese femininity in the U.S. as submissive, deferent, incompetent, and domestic. As I explain in this document many performances of femininity reinforce this Orientalist ideology, however there are also performances that can alter viewers perception of femininity and offer performances of gender identity that do not conform to hegemonic norms. By doing so, anime can shape …

Assessing The Scope Of The National Environmental Policy Act: Recent Attempts By Environmentalists To Add Climate Change Considerations Into Nepa Review, Maureen O'Dea Brill
Natural Resources Journal
As the United States continues its roaring ramp up as the world’s leading natural gas producer, the environmental community is trying to force the federal government to account for the aggregate impact of domestic natural gas production from shale, especially in the context of climate change. To achieve this goal, environmental organizations have sought to employ the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a law aimed at increasing government awareness of the broader environmental consequences of federal action. This article explores the two ways in which environmental organizations have tried to expand federal environmental reviews to include climate change considerations under …
