Analysis Of Epa Radionuclide Data From Water Samples On The Navajo Nation, Helenes Henderson Mar 2014

Analysis Of Epa Radionuclide Data From Water Samples On The Navajo Nation, Helenes Henderson

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has conducted risk assessments to quantify uranium exposure at inactive mining areas on the Navajo Nation. These evaluations include drinking water from domestic and agricultural sources dating back to the late 1990s because public water services were not entirely available in the mining districts at the time. This research reviews the radionuclide concentrations in the water samples determined by the EPA in 2000 to identify potential sources of water contamination. The inconsistencies of the radionuclide concentrations relative to their natural activities were initially observed. The concentrations of 234U and 210Pb tend to be higher …

Modeling Acequia Water Use In The Rio Hondo Watershed, Sandeep Sabu Mar 2014

Modeling Acequia Water Use In The Rio Hondo Watershed, Sandeep Sabu

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Acequia communities are agricultural communities that rely on self-organized participatory water allocation for irrigation. In North America, these communities originated with the Spanish colonization of the New World that took place towards the end of the 16th Century. Currently, functioning acequia communities in the United States are located in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. As the first users of snowmelt water, these communities are threatened by future changes in climate. Projections for decreases in precipitation, increases in temperature, and prolonged, drastic periods of drought are all factors in possible future diminishments in stream flow. Other threats to acequia culture …

Livestock, Land, And Dollars: The Sheep Industry Of Territorial New Mexico, Jon M. Wallace Feb 2014

Livestock, Land, And Dollars: The Sheep Industry Of Territorial New Mexico, Jon M. Wallace

History ETDs

Sheep Growing constituted New Mexico's leading industry for much of the territorial period and had been of major importance over the preceding two centuries, since the days of Spanish sovereignty. This work is a dedicated economic history of the industry during the territorial period, a time during which sheep sheep growing underwent a series of dramatic changes from the traditional Spanish practices of open-range grazing and large trail drives serving Mexican markets to capitalized sheep and wool production on managed lands, serving vastly larger American markets. The herds multiplied tremendously, while leadership and control of the industry shifted from a …

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock Feb 2014

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The black boxers who fled the United States to Paris in the beginning of the 20th century were a true sensation among the citys avant-garde, and of all the artists and litterateurs gathered around the rings of the Parisian boxing scene, two champions of the poetic world stand out: Guillaume Apollinaire and Arthur Cravan. For these two poets who embraced the fraternal bond which has long existed between pugilist and lyricist, the noble art came to have a unique impact both upon their poetic works and how they defined themselves as poets. By putting these two poetic heavyweights head-to-head, this …

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon Feb 2014

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Thousands of Americans enter postsecondary institutions every year and many are under-prepared for college-level work. Subsequently, students enroll in or are placed in developmental courses in preparation for the rigor of college-level classes. Numerous studies have looked at the impact of developmental course work on student outcomes, but few focus on predictors that could identify students who are likely to need developmental education. The potential for early prediction (and therefore possible intervention) is less understood. This study addresses this gap by examining the connection between high school assessments and subsequent developmental courses enrollment in college. Using longitudinal data from New …

Simulations Of Chemical Catalysis, Gregory K. Smith Feb 2014

Simulations Of Chemical Catalysis, Gregory K. Smith

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

This dissertation contains simulations of chemical catalysis in both biological and heterogeneous contexts. A mixture of classical, quantum, and hybrid techniques are applied to explore the energy profiles and compare possible chemical mechanisms both within the context of human and bacterial enzymes, as well as exploring surface reactions on a metal catalyst. A brief summary of each project follows.

Project 1 — Bacterial Enzyme SpvC

The newly discovered SpvC effector protein from Salmonella typhimurium interferes with the host immune response by dephosphorylating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) with a β-elimination mechanism. The dynamics of the enzyme substrate complex of the SpvC …

Unsettling Accounts: Life, Debt, And Development In The Middle Rio Grande, Samuel Karrigan Robison Markwell Feb 2014

Unsettling Accounts: Life, Debt, And Development In The Middle Rio Grande, Samuel Karrigan Robison Markwell

American Studies ETDs

This thesis reexamines the history of the formation of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD) during the first half of the twentieth century. Previous histories have either uncritically celebrated the MRGCD, or have been critical of its formation because of the way it negatively affected Mexicano/Hispano farming communities. This thesis extends the critical literature by situating the MRGCD as a formation of settler colonialism and attending to the ways it affected Pueblo Indian Nations. I argue that the MRGCD, ostensibly designed to "protect life and property" in the valley, was actually concerned with securing forms of life and property …

Lesson Plan And Workbook For Introducing Python Game Programming To Support The Advancing Out-Of-School Learning In Mathematics And Engineering (Aolme) Project, Cherish Franco

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In recent years, research has started to show a distressing trend in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) fields. It has become apparent that students from under-represented groups get little to no experience or practice in the field of engineering. This apparent lack of exposure to engineering knowledge and practice is likely to be the cause as to why students from under-represented groups may not become interested in engineering careers. The Advancing Out-of-School Learning in Mathematics and Engineering (AOLME) project was created specifically for providing integrated mathematics and engineering experiences to middle-school students from under-represented groups. The …

Functional Interactions Between The Cannabinoid System And Memory Consolidation In The Hippocampus: A Synthesis Of Findings From Behavior, Morphology, Physiology, And Synaptic Signaling In The Rat, Felicha Candelaria-Cook

Psychology ETDs

The hippocampus is essential for long-term memory storage and consolidation. The dentate gyrus acts as a gateway into the hippocampal formation, specifically with reference to medial and lateral perforant path projections from the entorhinal cortex. The dentate gyrus and the hippocampus contain a high density of cannabinoid receptors and may be a key location in which cannabinoids exert influence to disrupt memory. Administration of a cannabinoid agonist often leads to short-term and long-term memory deficits in a variety of tasks. Cannabinoids can impair memory acquisition, task performance, along with memory consolidation and retrieval mechanisms. Endogenous cannabinoids are retrograde messengers involved …

The Columbus Myth: Power And Ideology In Picturebooks About Christopher Columbus, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbuss landing in the Bahamas was simultaneously celebrated and denounced in the US. Damaging facts about Columbus and the impact of his voyages were aired along with demands for truth and change. This study analyzes the power relationships and political ideology of picturebooks about Columbus published in the US in the 20 years since that anniversary to determine what messages and attitudes young readers are likely to absorb from them and whether the picturebook image of Columbus has evolved. It draws on the ideas of progressive educator Herbert Kohl, who demonstrates how the analysis …

Development Of Synthetic Polymers For Bone Tissue Engineering: Engineering The Degradation Rate, Kirsten Cicotte Feb 2014

Development Of Synthetic Polymers For Bone Tissue Engineering: Engineering The Degradation Rate, Kirsten Cicotte

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

In this work the development, synthesis, and characterization of biodegradable synthetic polymers, poly (butylene fumarate) (PBF) and the copolymer poly (butylene fumarate)-co-(butylene maleate) (PBFcBM) is described. The unsaturated linear polyesters were synthesized via two synthetic routes, including an acid catalyzed transesterification reaction of (Z)-4-((4-hydroxybutan-2-yl)oxy)-4-oxobut-2-enoic acid which was formed via a ring opening reaction of maleic anhydride with 1,3-butylene glycol (BG) and reacting the acid chlorides, maleoyl chloride (MCl) and fumaryl chloride (FCl) with BG. Both methods introduce the cis (maleate) functionality into the polymer backbone, however a controlled fumarate to maleate ratio was only obtained via the acid chloride starting …

The Pueblo Of Santa Clara (Kha P'O Owinge) Resilience Project : Maintaining Identity While Preparing For An Uncertain Future, Matthew J. Piccarello

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Since 1998, the people of Santa Clara Pueblo (SCP) have seen 80% of their forested lands burned by wildfires. Wildfire is a natural part of the disturbance regime regulating Southwestern ecosystems, and yet these fires, the Las Conchas wildfire in 2011 in particular, have proven to be a major disaster for SCP. Las Conchas drastically altered the hydrology of the Santa Clara Creek watershed, causing severe flooding that has damaged cultural sites, infrastructure, threatened lives and property, and has rendered much of the watershed inaccessible to tribal members. This project uses resilience thinking to explain why the character of wildfire …

Legal Education At A Crossroads: Innovation, Integration, And Pluralism Required!, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez, Robert F. Seibel, Peggy Maisel, Karen Tokarz

Faculty Scholarship

We conclude in this Article that expanded practice-based, experiential education will provide foundational learning for the successful transition from law student to law practice, and that clinical education (in-house clinics, hybrid clinics, and externships) is crucial to the preparation of competent, ethical law graduates who are "ready to become professionals." We urge law schools to require each graduate complete a minimum of twenty-one experiential course credits over the three years of law school, including at least five credits in law clinics or externships. Twenty-one required credits (or roughly 25 percent of the eighty-three required credits for graduation from an American …

A Proposed Emendation Of The Gray Flycatchers Type Locality And Formal Designation Of Its Lectotype', John P. Hubbard, Carla J. Dove

Occasional Papers

The Gray Flycatcher (Empidonax wrightii) now bears the specific epithet that Spencer Fullerton Baird provisionally designated' for a potential new species of this genus—which he described from two seemingly undated Smithsonian Institution museum skins (i.e., USNM 7234 and 7237), and which the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey botanist Charles Wright had purportedly collected at El Paso, El Paso County, Texas presumably in the early 1850s. However, our research indicates that: (a) the latter locality did not exist as such when Wright collected these specimens, which respective dates we have determined were almost certainly 4 May and 3 April 1852; …

Developing The Law Of The River: The Integration Of Law And Policy Into Hydrologic And Socio-Economic Modeling Efforts In The Willamette River Basin, Adell Louise Amos

Publications

A legal and policy infrastructure -- referred to as a "law of the river" -- exists for every river basin in the U.S. an can be as important as natural processes in terms of managing the future of the resource. Because of the way that water law and policy have evolved in the U.S., this infrastructure involves a matrix of state and federal law that governs the choices that policymakers, end users, and agencies make. This "law of the river" provides the context in which decisions are made and not made. It also draws the boundaries within which decision makers …
