Selections From Shadows Of Clouds On The Mountains, Mike Smith Sep 2014

Selections From Shadows Of Clouds On The Mountains, Mike Smith

English Language and Literature ETDs

The following essays are all chapters from a larger work, Shadows of Clouds on the Mountains, a sort of life-spanning nonfiction Ulysses, a literary mixtape in which every chapter takes a different form, and every chapter's form is dictated by its content. These essays, or chapters, will appear, basically as is, in my book, Shadows of Clouds on the Mountains. These are stories of family, memory, suicide, mental illness, the sibling bond, marriage, children, divorce, and adulthood. These are stories of a life devoted to art and exploration.

The Early-Modernization Of The Classical Muse, Bruce Carroll Sep 2014

The Early-Modernization Of The Classical Muse, Bruce Carroll

English Language and Literature ETDs

The Early-Modernization of the Classical Muse juxtaposes ancient and Renaissance uses of the Muse to retrieve her from the status of mere literary convention. I draw on Hans Blumenbergs 'reoccupation' (Umbesetzung) thesis, which locates in philosophy concerns originally raised in myth, to argue that the poet's relationship with his Muse, as the perceived source of his art form, was always somehow ontological (ontology: the theory of human being). In the pre-literate, pre-philosophical invocations of archaic figures like Homer and Hesiod, I locate the 'ontological stirrings' in which the poet identifies his self through his at times troublesome and combative dependence …

Animal People, Sabrina Golmassian Sep 2014

Animal People, Sabrina Golmassian

English Language and Literature ETDs

Billions of animals are killed every year based on this ethical premise: Animals are lower than humans on some abstract moral scale, and they can therefore be considered property. However, a growing percentage of compassionate and educated animal lovers and advocates reject that premise. Its now possible to live comfortably and happily without subjecting animals to fear, pain, and stress for non-essential products. Whether it be food, clothing, scientific experiment, or entertainment, alternatives now exist to take their place. A broad range of investigative journalism and scholarship have exposed the detrimental effects of the use of animals for industry. An …

Topological Code Architectures For Quantum Computation, Christopher Cesare Sep 2014

Topological Code Architectures For Quantum Computation, Christopher Cesare

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation is concerned with quantum computation using many-body quantum systems encoded in topological codes. The interest in these topological systems has increased in recent years as devices in the lab begin to reach the fidelities required for performing arbitrarily long quantum algorithms. The most well-studied system, Kitaev's toric code, provides both a physical substrate for performing universal fault-tolerant quantum computations and a useful pedagogical tool for explaining the way other topological codes work. In this dissertation, I first review the necessary formalism for quantum information and quantum stabilizer codes, and then I introduce two families of topological codes: Kitaev's …

Gpgpu-Enabled Physics Based Deformed Model Simulation, Alejandro Enedino Hernandez Samaniego Sep 2014

Gpgpu-Enabled Physics Based Deformed Model Simulation, Alejandro Enedino Hernandez Samaniego

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Computer simulation techniques are widely adopted nowadays in many areas like manufacturing, engineering, graphics, animation, virtual reality and so on. However, the standard finite element based simulation is notorious for its expensive computation. To address this challenge, I present a GPU-based parallel implementation for simulating large elastic deformation. Classic modal analysis provides a set of orthonormal bases vectors, which span a spectral space encoding the dynamics of the elastic body. As each basis vector is orthogonal to each other, the computation is completely decoupled and can be well-fit into the modern GPGPU platform. We further explore the latest feature of …

Heidegger And The Ethics Of The Earth: Eco-Phenomenology In The Age Of Technology, Tara Kennedy Jul 2014

Heidegger And The Ethics Of The Earth: Eco-Phenomenology In The Age Of Technology, Tara Kennedy

Philosophy ETDs

Martin Heidegger came to see the history of Western metaphysics as a series of ontotheological epochs. These epochs, he argues, culminate in the age informed by the metaphysics of Friedrich Nietzsche. According to this ontotheological paradigm, entities are nothing more than meaningless resources to be optimized. This paper argues that this is the source of the environmental crises we face. In order to see our way through and beyond this nihilistic ontotheological age, we must recognize the ontological source of all existence, that which Heidegger called being as such. The philosophical tradition of phenomenology offers us an ideal method for …

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Venisa Martinez Jul 2014

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Venisa Martinez

American Studies ETDs

This study seeks to explain this curious and unknown connection of Albuquerque flamenco to Eva Encinias-Sandoval and the dance traditions of Nuevomexicanos. I seek to identify the history and social impact of this rich and distinct New Mexico flamenco tradition by tracing the development of Encinias-Sandoval's career and the establishment of her now world-class flamenco arts program, offered through the University of New Mexico's Dance and Theatre Department, as well as thorough affiliates and organizations of the National Institute of Flamenco. More specifically, my thesis describes how Eva Encinias-Sandoval built and continues to anchor this inspiring expressive art form in …

Bayesian Partially Ordered Probit And Logit Models With An Application To Course Redesign, Xueqi Wang Jul 2014

Bayesian Partially Ordered Probit And Logit Models With An Application To Course Redesign, Xueqi Wang

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Large entry-level courses are commonplace at public 2- and 4-year institutions of higher education (IHEs) across the United States. Low pass rates in these entry-level courses, coupled with tight budgets, have put pressure on IHEs to look for ways to teach more students more effectively at a lower cost. Efforts to improve student outcomes in such courses are often called ``course redesigns.' The difficulty arises in trying to determine the impact of a particular course redesign; true random-controlled trials are expensive and time-consuming, and few IHEs have the resources or patience to implement them. As a result, almost all evaluations …

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky Jul 2014

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky

History ETDs

Since the Enlightenment, Anglo-American temperance thinkers—who were usually clergymen and physicians—have expressed broader concerns about intoxication and addiction with rhetoric that simultaneously pathologized and criminalized the unsanctioned use of psychoactive substances. During the first half of the eighteenth century, a period known as the Gin Craze, rising levels of urban drunkenness in England came under the sustained gaze of temperance-minded doctors and churchmen, who used a shared language of contagion, disease, and slavery to problematize intoxication simultaneously as a medical and criminal condition. Building on Enlightenment English temperance thought, which was transferred into the United States by physician Benjamin Rush, …

Development Of Novel Synthetic Methods For Size-Tunable Synthesis Of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles, Erika Vreeland Jul 2014

Development Of Novel Synthetic Methods For Size-Tunable Synthesis Of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles, Erika Vreeland

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The properties of magnetic nanoparticles vary dramatically with size, so reproducibly controlling size is critical for practical applications. This is particularly true when moving into clinical settings, where regulatory approval requires demonstrated reproducibility in efficacy that can only be achieved with excellent size control. A number of methods for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles have been published, although the thermal decomposition of iron(III) precursors in organic solvents has been shown to yield high quality particles with low shape and size dispersity. Currents methods lack reproducibility resulting from non-stoichiometric starting materials, and reliance on reaction parameters, such as temperature ramp rate, …

Moderate Fetal Alcohol Exposure, The Nucleus Accumbens, And Alcohol Consumption In Adulthood, James Rice Jul 2014

Moderate Fetal Alcohol Exposure, The Nucleus Accumbens, And Alcohol Consumption In Adulthood, James Rice

Psychology ETDs

Recent findings using a moderate prenatal alcohol consumption model in rats found that male offspring had reduced dendritic fields in medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens (NAc). These results suggest that moderate fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) leads to long-lasting alterations in brain regions involved in reward processing that could lead to abnormal behavior related to ethanol (EtOH) in adulthood. Here, five experiments were carried out to establish the extent to which moderate FAE leads to increased EtOH consumption in adulthood, how functional and structural alterations in the NAc are related to EtOH consumption, and whether moderate FAE has any …

The Last Apache "Broncho": The Apache Outlaw In The Popular Imagination, 1886-2013, Leah Candolin Cook Jul 2014

The Last Apache "Broncho": The Apache Outlaw In The Popular Imagination, 1886-2013, Leah Candolin Cook

History ETDs

This study examines the American mythmaking of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Apache 'renegades' and their post—Apache Wars counterpart the Apache 'bronchos' in popular culture and memory. The idea of the 'broncho' Apache created fear, insecurity, and cautionary folklore for residents of the American Southwest and northern Mexico from 1886—1930s. Over time, white appropriations of Apaches in literature, film, and pop culture would evolve from the murderous wild 'savage,' to the sympathetic anti-hero, to the hero. This thesis connects representations of Apaches with contemporaneous American attitudes on race, masculinity, nostalgia. Although portrayals of Apaches changed over time, an underlying theme of the …

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac Jul 2014

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac

Geography ETDs

This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

"I Don't Approve Of That Way Of Running A Family": Transient Children, Institutions, And Interventions In California Through The Great Depression And Dust Bowl, Jairo Marshall Jul 2014

"I Don't Approve Of That Way Of Running A Family": Transient Children, Institutions, And Interventions In California Through The Great Depression And Dust Bowl, Jairo Marshall

History ETDs

This thesis studies the state of California's responses to migratory families and children during the Depression and Dust Bowl. In particular, it emphasizes the growth of several state bureaucracies during this time, including the Department of Public Health, the Department of Education, and the Youth Authority. It also engages with local nonprofit relief agencies as well as county agencies, which functioned as direct aid providers to migrants. The efforts to provide relief to migrant families are explained, as are the surrounding rhetorical frameworks used to discuss the perceived negative attributes of migrant children. These discourses influenced administrators, California residents, and …

Counterfactual Feedback And Tennis, G. Beth Birky Jul 2014

Counterfactual Feedback And Tennis, G. Beth Birky

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Physical education teachers must consider the most effective way to deliver instruction and feedback for maximum student learning. Counterfactual feedback assists in engaging visual (internal) and auditory augmented feedback in order to create an optimal learning environment, which will produce the highest skill level in the shortest time possible (Sigrist, et al, 2011). Counterfactual feedback promotes critical thinking as it applies to the performance of a skill. Critical thinking is linked to better decision-making, reasoning, problem-solving, and reflective judgment in individuals (Lodewyck, 2009). Counterfactual feedback relies on the teacher asking a directed question as feedback after a skill performance or …

Cul-De-Sac: Social Conversation Through Research And Performance, Peter J. Bennett Jul 2014

Cul-De-Sac: Social Conversation Through Research And Performance, Peter J. Bennett

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Cul-De-Sac: Social Conversation Through the Lens of Jazz Dance, discusses the rise of the suburbs following the Second World War, the homophobic society of the 1950s forcing homosexual men to hide in the closet, and the role of women within the suburban community, and how the research into these social issues evolved into an evenings length piece of dance theatre told through the language of jazz dance. Jazz dance is a distinctly American art form, often overlooked on the concert stage. In this dissertation, I endeavor to prove that jazz is a style of dance capable of carrying social messages …

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen Jul 2014

The Role Of Disability In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Amanda H. Heggen

Special Education ETDs

The social construction of disability posits that media play an important role in the construction of disability. Few studies have systematically examined the role of disability in film or television. Engaging in a multiple perspective analysis, this dissertation examined the role of disability in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Data were analyzed with a content analysis, a thematic analysis, and an ideological rhetorical criticism. Disability was found to be used as a tool of character, plot, and atmosphere development. The data also suggested that negative assumptions of disability, often reinforcing of stereotypes, were readily apparent in the series …

Beyond The Missions: Ethnogenesis In Colonial Paraguay, 1556-1700, Shawn Michael Austin Jul 2014

Beyond The Missions: Ethnogenesis In Colonial Paraguay, 1556-1700, Shawn Michael Austin

History ETDs

This dissertation argues that Guaraní socio-cultural practices determined what Spaniards could and could not do in colonial Paraguay. Beyond the Missions,' refers to colonial encounters outside the oft-romanticized Jesuit missions, especially within the provincial capital of Asunción. This research, therefore, complements the scholarship on the Jesuit missions by demonstrating that the Guaraní among the Spanish were just as influential as their counterparts in the missions in shaping the process by which they assumed new ethnic identities (or ethnogenesis) in Christian communities. Moreover, Guaraní social norms deeply influenced colonials and their institutions, including Blacks and the practice of African slavery. This …

Jiggs And Other Stories, Vondell Jones Jul 2014

Jiggs And Other Stories, Vondell Jones

English Language and Literature ETDs

Jiggs and Other Stories represent a diverse sampling of my work as a UNM graduate student and a writer of fiction. The works presented here are a pastiche of genres that include magical realism, tragedy, absurdist fiction, and fantasy and adventure. Beyond those significant categories, however, these stories are the product of my imagination. The power of fiction itself—Id like to believe—depends upon the capacities of the mind. When knowledge, experience, restless imagination and bold creativity are combined—good fiction supersedes the boundaries of literary categorization. My intention, in part, is to have these stories serve as an homage to many …
