Pino Gate Prairie Dog Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Landscape Plot Lizard Data (2001-2002), Ana Davidson, David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Keystone species have large impacts on community and ecosystem properties, and create important ecological interactions with other species. Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis) are considered keystone species of grassland ecosystems, and create a mosaic of unique habitats on the landscape. These habitats are known to attract a number of animal species, but little is known about how they affect lizard communities. Our research evaluated the keystone roles of prairie dogs and kangaroo rats on lizards at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, USA. We evaluated the impacts of these rodents on lizard …
Small Mammal Exclosure Study (Smes) Ant Data From Chihuahuan Desert Grassland And Shrubland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1995-2005), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Animal consumers have important roles in ecosystems, determining plant species composition and structure, regulating rates of plant production and nutrients, and altering soil structure and chemistry. This is data for numbers and species of seed harvester ant nests mapped from each of the SMES study plots. Seed harvester ant nests were mapped on each of the study plots once each year in the autumn. Ant nest maps were drawn on to pre-designed plot diagrams. Each nest was located on the diagram in reference to one of the 36 vegetation quadrat marker posts. The distance from the post, direction from the …

Sevilleta LTER Program Data
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the activities of small mammals regulate plant community structure, plant species diversity, and spatial vegetation patterns in Chihuahuan Desert shrublands and grasslands. What role if any do indigenous small mammal consumers have in maintaining desertified landscapes in the Chihuahuan Desert? Additionally, how do the effects of small mammals interact with changing climate to affect vegetation patterns over time? This is data for perennial plant vegetation canopy cover measured from all SMES study plots, fall 1995 and fall 2005. The purpose of this data is to provide ground-truth data for …

Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis) are considered keystone species of grassland ecosystems, and co-occur in the arid grasslands of the southwestern United States and in Mexico. Their keystone status is attributed primarily to the effects of their burrowing and foraging behavior, but they differ ecologically in several important respects. We studied the comparative functional roles of these species where they co-occur at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, focusing on their impacts on grassland vegetation. We found that vegetation cover, structure, and species richness varied across a gradient extending out from the mound centers, …

The Effect Of Kangaroo-Rat Activity On Plant Species Composition At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1999), Gyuri Kroel-Dulay, Debra Peters, Tamara Hochstrasser
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Our objective was to evaluate the effects of kangaroo rat mounds on species diversity and composition at a semiarid-arid grassland ecotone. We expected that source populations of plants occurring on kangaroo rat mounds have important influences on the species composition of vegetation at the landscape scale, and that these influences differ by grassland type. Our study was conducted at the Sevilleta LTER in New Mexico, where a grassland type dominated by Bouteloua gracilis, a shortgrass steppe species, and a grassland type dominated by B. eriopoda, a desert grassland species, meet to form patches across the landscape. Four 0.4 ha plots …

The Malleability Of University Students' Beliefs, Values, And Attitudes In The Classroom Setting, Glory Emmanuel
Psychology ETDs
Beliefs, values, and attitudes (BVAs) are central to a persons identity and worldview but can be refined and influenced through the individual's surrounding environment and experience. The academic setting is one environment that impacts BVAs. This study examined if university students' BVAs are influenced over a semester by students' attributes, their professor, and the classroom context by testing three main hypotheses: 1) students demonstrate BVA change over time while professors' BVAs remain relatively stable over time; 2) students' attributes influence BVA change; and 3) students, especially those who have a positive experience in the class, assimilate to their professor's BVAs. …
Controlling The Structure And Dynamics Of Magnetoresponsive Particle Suspensions For Enhanced Transport Phenomena, Kyle J. Solis
Controlling The Structure And Dynamics Of Magnetoresponsive Particle Suspensions For Enhanced Transport Phenomena, Kyle J. Solis
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
The work contained herein describes the use of various magnetic fields to control the structure and dynamics of magnetic particle suspensions, with the practical aim of enhancing momentum, heat, and mass transport. The magnetic fields are often multiaxial and can consist of up to three orthogonal components that may be either static (dc), time-dependent (ac), or some combination thereof. The magnetic particles are composed of a ferromagnetic material—such as iron, nickel, cobalt, or Permalloy—and can exist in a variety of shapes, including spheres, platelets, and rods. The shape of the particles is particularly important, as this can determine the type …
Impact Of Meal Frequency On Appetite And Blood Markers Of Health In Obese Women Utilizing An Equi-Hypocaloric Diet During A Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention, Michelle Kulovitz
Impact Of Meal Frequency On Appetite And Blood Markers Of Health In Obese Women Utilizing An Equi-Hypocaloric Diet During A Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention, Michelle Kulovitz
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Background: Obesity prevalence is a global pandemic and a public health concern. Beneficial weight loss strategies are needed for obesity management. Increased daily meal frequency (MF) is often associated with improvements in blood-markers of health and appetite control during weight loss; however, this has not been confirmed using portion-controlled meal products to reduce underreporting error. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if increased MF can be a beneficial treatment strategy for weight loss in obese women by determining the changes of total ghrelin, blood glucose, insulin, lipid concentrations, and sensations of hunger and satiety due to an …
Influence Of Social Capital On Community-Based Health Care Programs In Rural Papua New Guinea: An Ethnographic Study, Carol J. Bett
Influence Of Social Capital On Community-Based Health Care Programs In Rural Papua New Guinea: An Ethnographic Study, Carol J. Bett
Nursing ETDs
This descriptive, ethnographic study explored the influence of cultural health beliefs and social capital on the adoption of community-based health care interventions by rural villages in Papua New Guinea. The development of local level resources that lead to improved health indices requires an awareness of both the cultural context and the relational components of social capital that link people within the community. Social capital has been defined as resources that are an inherent part of a social group and the elements of social organization such as trust, networks, and norms of reciprocity that facilitate mutual cooperation (Billings, 2000; Carpiano, 2006). …
A New Kind Of Therapeutic Relationship: Exploring Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Computer-Delivered Interventions For Alcohol Use Disorders, William P. Campbell Iv
A New Kind Of Therapeutic Relationship: Exploring Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Computer-Delivered Interventions For Alcohol Use Disorders, William P. Campbell Iv
Psychology ETDs
Computer-delivered interventions (CDI) for alcohol use comprise a relatively new treatment for individuals struggling with problematic drinking. While CDIs for alcohol misuse have proliferated over the last decade, much remains unknown about factors that influence their effectiveness. This study evaluated the performance of Overcoming Addictions (OA), a CDI based on the principles of SMART Recovery (SR). Subjects were drawn from a sample of 189 participants enrolled in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) that compared three and six-month outcomes for two interventions for problematic alcohol use: control participants were enrolled in SR meetings (face to face and/or online); experimental participants also …
Development Of A Group Dynamic Functional Connectivity Pipeline For Magnetoencephalography Data And Its Application To The Human Face Processing Network, Per Lysne
Psychology ETDs
Since its inception, functional neuroimaging has focused on identifying sources of neural activity. Recently, interest has turned to the analysis of connectivity between neural sources in dynamic brain networks. This new interest calls for the development of appropriate investigative techniques. A problem occurs in connectivity studies when the differing networks of individually analyzed subjects must be reconciled. One solution, the estimation of group models, has become common in fMRI, but is largely untried with electromagnetic data. Additionally, the assumption of stationarity has crept into the field, precluding the analysis of dynamic systems. Group extensions are applied to the sparse irMxNE …
Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel
Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
In my thesis, I explore the mythological figure of Cerberus in the Elegies of Tibullus and Propertius. My objective is to bring to light the imaginative and provocative way that both of these poets employ the imagery and history of Cerberus and by so doing to illustrate the way in which both poets present Cerberus as a depiction of the poet lover. My thesis begins with an analysis of the representations of Cerberus, both literary and in pottery, and his mythological history. I follow with a chapter exploring Tibullus use of Cerberus as a stand-in for the elegiac poet-lover as …

Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller
Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation examines the intersections between the rhetoric of the DREAM Act and the discourse of the migrant activists, specifically DREAMers, affected by the Acts language. Through a hermeneutic approach combining a rhetorical, genre, and critical discourse analysis, I examine how the DREAMers respond to marginalizing textual features of the Act. DREAMers appropriate genres and rhetorical moves of the dominant discourse to combat four problem features of the DREAM Act, namely the criminalizing nature, the erasure of the affected subjects (migrants), the taking away of agency from the affected subjects (migrants), and the propagation of xenophobic racism. Often fraught with …
Cultivating Community: Political Identity And Civic Agriculture Among Small-Scale Organic Farmers In North Central New Mexico, Rose Elizabeth Rohrer
Cultivating Community: Political Identity And Civic Agriculture Among Small-Scale Organic Farmers In North Central New Mexico, Rose Elizabeth Rohrer
Sociology ETDs
Little work has been done exploring the sociological experiences of individuals working in organic agriculture, a type of farming primarily characterized by rigorous restrictions on chemical inputs. Unlike the massive corporate farms that have become commonplace in much of the United States, farms in North Central New Mexico tend to be small and diverse, with a political focus on community-building. In this study, thirty in-depth interviews of ten producers/owners and twenty farmworkers on organic farms in the region were conducted over the course of the 2014 growing season. I use the interview data to examine how small-scale farm work and …
