A Variationist Perspective On Spanish-Origin Verbs In Paraguayan Guarani, Josefina Bittar Prieto
A Variationist Perspective On Spanish-Origin Verbs In Paraguayan Guarani, Josefina Bittar Prieto
Linguistics ETDs
Paraguay presents a unique case of societal bilingualism in Latin America. Almost 90% of its population speaks the indigenous language Guarani, and half of the population is bilingual in Spanish and Guarani. However, contemporary Guarani has been described as an unpredictable, ad-hoc mix of Guarani and Spanish. This idea is also reflected in the local term jopara 'mixture', which is used to refer to the variety by its speakers. A particularly salient contact feature are loan verbs, i.e. Spanish-origin roots used with Guarani morphology. To gain an empirical perspective on the presence and motivation of Spanish loan verbs in Guarani, …
A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Semantics Of The Russian Verbal Prefix Na-, Christopher Hart-Moynihan
A Cognitive Grammar Analysis Of The Semantics Of The Russian Verbal Prefix Na-, Christopher Hart-Moynihan
Linguistics ETDs
The Russian verbal prefix na- is one of a set of aspectual prefixes that exhibit characteristics of both derivational and inflectional morphemes. In addition to forming aspectual pairs as a grammatical marker of Perfective aspect, na-, in many cases, also carries lexical meaning; in these cases, na-prefixation changes the lexical/semantic meaning of the verbal stem, resulting in a distinct lexical item. I examine a sample of 40 verbs to compare the frequencies of na- as a lexicalized prefix and as a grammaticalized prefix. I then propose a radial category model to account for the polysemous functions of na-, with several …
Illustrating The Prototype Structures Of Parts Of Speech: A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis, Phillip Rogers
Illustrating The Prototype Structures Of Parts Of Speech: A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis, Phillip Rogers
Linguistics ETDs
Radical Construction Grammar (Croft 2001) proposes that parts of speech can be explained as prototypes that emerge from the use of broad semantic classes of words--objects, properties, and actions--in basic propositional act functions of discourse--reference, modification, and predication. This theory predicts that each of these broad semantic classes will be typologically unmarked in its prototypical propositional act function and relatively marked in other propositional act functions. Because this theory speaks to such a broad and fundamental organization of linguistic structure, the rich structure of these prototypes has not been fully explored in a comprehensive manner. Gradience is a key characteristic …

Legacy Mining Metal Exposures Contribute To Circulating Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein And Serum Inflammatory Potential In A Native Community, Molly E. Harmon
Legacy Mining Metal Exposures Contribute To Circulating Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein And Serum Inflammatory Potential In A Native Community, Molly E. Harmon
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Numerous abandoned uranium mines (AUM) within the Navajo Nation contribute uranium (U), arsenic (As) and other metals to the soil, air and groundwater that continue to pose potential health risks to Navajo residents. The prevalence of inflammatory-related cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) has increased among the Navajo community in recent decades. Environmental exposure to metal contaminants may alter the circulation in ways that are associated with the inflammation-driven process of atherosclerotic plaque formation. Thus, we hypothesize that exposures to AUM metal contaminants are associated with pro-atherogenic changes in the circulation as evidenced by increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) …
Pulmonary Bcg Vaccination For Uniform Protection Against Tuberculosis In Environmental Mycobacteria Endemic Regions, Dominique Nicole Price
Pulmonary Bcg Vaccination For Uniform Protection Against Tuberculosis In Environmental Mycobacteria Endemic Regions, Dominique Nicole Price
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Currently, over one-third of the global population is infected with tuberculosis (TB), one of the world's most deadly infectious diseases. The current vaccine against TB, Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), is a live attenuated vaccine that is intradermally administered in over 150 countries around the world. Despite its widespread use, the vaccine has a variable protective efficacy of 0-80%, with the lowest efficacy rates in regions of the world where TB is most prevalent. This variability is partially due to environmental mycobacteria (EM) found in soil and water sources in areas of the world where BCG efficacy is poor. The research hypothesis …
Bacteriophage Virus-Like Particles As Vaccine Platforms: From Heart Disease To Malaria, Erin Crossey
Bacteriophage Virus-Like Particles As Vaccine Platforms: From Heart Disease To Malaria, Erin Crossey
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Virus-like particles (VLPs) make excellent vaccines. They are non-infectious, often easy to produce in bacterial expression systems, and highly immunogenic. The latter feature is granted by the regularity of the capsid structure, which presents viral (or other) epitopes as dense, highly repetitive arrays that strongly stimulate B cells. VLPs can be used as the basis for vaccines targeting the virus from which they were derived, or they can be used as platforms to display practically any short peptide epitope in a multivalent format. Foreign peptides displayed on VLPs exhibit the same high immunogenicity as unmodified VLPs. Even self-antigens, normally subject …
Ecocultural Adjustment: A Peace Corps Sojourn, Melissa Michelle Parks
Ecocultural Adjustment: A Peace Corps Sojourn, Melissa Michelle Parks
Communication ETDs
This work serves as a case study to extend, expand, and challenge the conventionally anthropocentric framing of cultural adjustment. I examine cultural adjustment through an ecocultural lens, reconceptualizing the process as ecocultural adjustment, which combines both cultural (human-centered) factors with environmental (both human-constructed and greater-than-human) elements in the process of sojourner adaptation. I utilize journal and blog entries along with my own memories through performative autoethnography to explore a 26-month sojourn with the US Peace Corps in Malawi, Africa, as well as the departure, travel, and return to the United States. Over the course of this reflective study, I explore …

Female Gender Role Representation Between 1990 And 2010 In Imported Childrens Cartoons And Their Implications For Conservative Yemeni Culture, Fatima Al-Hattami
Communication ETDs
This thesis explores the female gender role representations in imported cartoons across the years 1990 and 2010 and their resonance with the conservative Yemeni Muslim culture. The two selected cartoons are A Little Princess Sara (a Nippon Animation production) and Totally Spies (a Marathon Media production), both of which are imported to the Arab countries, dubbed into the Arabic language, aired on Arab childrens channels and popular among girls. The study is inspired by theories of media and cultural globalization and imperialism, which were developed to explain media policies and flow around the globe. The study also draws on the …
Inhaled Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Systemic Inflammation And Endothelial Dysfunction Via Mmp-9 Induction, Mario Aragon
Inhaled Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Induce Systemic Inflammation And Endothelial Dysfunction Via Mmp-9 Induction, Mario Aragon
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Assessing the mechanisms underlying adverse cardiovascular effects induced by inhaled toxins presents a substantial research challenge. We propose that blood carries an as yet unknown "inflammatory potential" consisting of modified proteins or other biomolecules and reaction byproducts that affects a pathological bioactivity which can be assessed using naïve endothelial cells and blood vessels. The approach involves applying serum from exposed animals to cultured primary endothelial cells or ex vivo isolated arteries. Mice were exposed to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT; 0, 10 or 40 μg) or other pollutants via pharyngeal aspiration and serum was collected at 4 and 24 h post-exposure. …
Stochastic Methods For One-Sided Bipartite Crossing Minimization And Its Variants, Tanya Jeffries
Stochastic Methods For One-Sided Bipartite Crossing Minimization And Its Variants, Tanya Jeffries
Computer Science ETDs
The one-sided bipartite graph drawing problem has been extensively studied in the graph drawing literature, with numerous papers appearing over the years showing novel algorithms and heuristics for minimizing associated edge crossings. Although stochastic methods have been highly successful when applied to bipartite graph drawing, a large, comprehensive study to compare said methods has not been carried out for one-sided crossing minimization on traditional, unweighted graphs. Even more so, the variant problems of weighted and bottleneck bipartite crossing minimization have seldom been studied, with only one published algorithm, 3-WOLF (designed for one-sided weighted crossing minimization), and one published heuristic, MEC …

The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
American Studies ETDs
In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above. This dissertation retraces the story of this scientific colonization from the point of view …
Considerations In Caring For People With Physical Disabilities: A Course Elective, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Sarah K. Morley, Jennifer Benson
Considerations In Caring For People With Physical Disabilities: A Course Elective, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Sarah K. Morley, Jennifer Benson
Posters and Presentations
Context: People with disabilities represent a significant portion of the population. A 2007 Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Disability in America' noted that barriers to equal health care for people with disabilities include physical barriers, and knowledge and attitudes related to caring and interacting with people with disabilities. People with disabilities (PWD), as with many other groups disadvantaged by social inequities, often receive suboptimal care from health care providers. The root cause of this inequity in care can be traced to a lack of training for health care providers in dealing with PWD. The AAMC has recommended medical …

Advancing The Knowledge Of Organic Farming Data In New Mexico: Health And Injury Surveillance Systems, Virginia Sedore
Advancing The Knowledge Of Organic Farming Data In New Mexico: Health And Injury Surveillance Systems, Virginia Sedore
Population Health
While the concept and practice of organic farming has been around since the mid-1800s, there is little data currently being collected on injury, illness, or fatality within the organic farming population, leaving the health risks unknown. This paper intends to look at the surveillance systems currently in place to collect injury and illness data as it relates to organic farmers, and in particular, the New Mexico organic farmer. Evaluations of the current surveillance systems were conducted, and organic farmer demographics were analyzed using rate ratio comparisons of United States(U.S.), Texas, and New Mexico. The results show that the current surveillance …

Gunnison's Prairie Dog Relocation Project: Vegetation Cover Data From The Sevilleta National Wildife Refuge, New Mexico (2005-2013), Ana Davidson, David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Prairie dogs are keystone species that impact both animals and plants in grassland habitats. They are a food resource for secondary consumers such as badgers, foxes, and raptors. Also, the mounds that they construct are home to many arthropod and reptile species that otherwise might not survive in grasslands. Both Gunnison’s and black-tailed prairie dogs can increase the number of plant species in grasslands and landscape heterogeneity with their ecosystem engineering that creates disturbed patches on the landscape. Gunnison’s prairie dogs, which were native herbivores at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) before their populations disappeared, were reintroduced at the …

The Neural Representation Of Concepts At The Sensor Level, Michael John Healy, Thoms Preston Caudell
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report presents a mathematical model of the semantics, or meaning, of the connec-tionist structure and stimulus activity of a neural network, whether artificial or biologi-cal. The mathematical model associates concepts about sensed objects with the neuron-like nodes in a neural network and composable concept relationships with the connec-tion pathways in the network. Category-theoretic constructs, specifically colimits, limits, and functors, organize the concept structure and map it to a formal neural network in a structure-preserving manner. Starting with a simple example of a neural vision system, we show that this mathematical model of neural network structure and activity can be …

Investigating Host Feeding Strategy As A Determinant Of Insect Gut Microbial Community Profile At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, Daniel Colman, Cristina Takacs-Vesbach, Eric Toolson
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Diverse microbial communities live in the gut regions of animals. The precise ecological and evolutionary circumstances that govern relationships between hosts and their gut communities is unclear. In this study, we hypothesize that host feeding strategy shapes the microbial communities within the gut systems of insects. We collected five insect species from the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge that exhibited herbivorous, detritovorous and carnivorous diets. Using gut samples from the insects we measured if and how microbial communities are shaped based on any effect host feeding strategy might have. Preliminary analysis of bacterial communities using 16S rDNA sequences has thus far …
