Easier To Break From Inside Than From Outside / Mai Ușor Să Distrugi Din Interior Decât Din Exterior, Florentin Smarandache, Andrusa R. Vatuiu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract in English:

This book contains concrete examples from history, economy, biology, digital world, nuclear physics, agriculture and so on about breaking a neutrosophic dynamic system (i.e. a dynamic system that has indeterminacy) from inside.

We define a neutrosophic mathematical model using a system of ordinary differential equations and the neutrosophic probability in order to approximate the process of breaking from inside a neutrosophic complex dynamic system.

It shows that for breaking from inside it is needed a smaller force than for breaking from outside the neutrosophic complex dynamic system.

Methods that have been used in the past for breaking …

Feasibility Of Rainwater Catchment In The Taos Mesa Community In Northern New Mexico, Miranda Rivera Jan 2017

Feasibility Of Rainwater Catchment In The Taos Mesa Community In Northern New Mexico, Miranda Rivera

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

INTRODUCTION Lack of water is nothing new for New Mexico’s general population. However, its immediate negative effects are unevenly distributed throughout the state, which is increasingly evident in the context of rising temperatures and decreases in precipitation. Access to clean drinking water is significantly more pressing in rural and off-the-grid communities than in metropolitan areas of New Mexico. On the Taos Mesa in northern New Mexico, these off-the-grid communities continue hauling as the only available method for accessing water today. In these communities, water is not only a vital source of livelihood but also necessary for the continuance of cultural …

U.S. Nonprofit Activity In Cuba: Challenges In Cuban Law And Practice, Laura Spitz, Elizabeth Brundige, Lucía Domínguez Cisneros, Eduardo Peñalve

Faculty Scholarship

American regulatory restrictions on nonprofit activity in Cuba have decreased dramatically over the past three years.1 As a result, interest in undertaking projects in Cuba among U.S. nonprofits has increased significandy over that same period. Despite President Trump's recent directive that rolled back several aspects of the previous administration's Cuba policy and ordered new restrictions on U.S.-Cuban engagement, 2 U.S. nonprofits are unlikely to be deterred from seeking to expand their engagement in Cuba over the long term. As nonprofits explore potential opportunities and navigate legal and political challenges, this Article seeks to advance the conversation 3 by answering the …

Using Brain Stimulation To Enhance Working Memory: A Charged Topic, Michael Christopher Stefan Trumbo Dec 2016

Using Brain Stimulation To Enhance Working Memory: A Charged Topic, Michael Christopher Stefan Trumbo

Psychology ETDs

Although working memory (WM) training programs consistently result in improvement on the trained task, benefit is typically short-lived and extends only to tasks very similar to the trained task. Pairing repeated performance of a WM task with brain stimulation may encourage plasticity in brain networks involved in WM task performance, thereby improving the training benefit. In the current study, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was paired with performance of a WM task. In Experiment 1, participants performed a spatial location-monitoring n-back during stimulation, while Experiment 2 used a verbal identity-monitoring n-back. In each experiment, participants received either active (2.0 mA) …

Mitigating The Impacts Of Human Land-Use Change On Biodiversity: With A Focus On Large Migratory Herbivores, Kina Rebekah Murphy Dec 2016

Mitigating The Impacts Of Human Land-Use Change On Biodiversity: With A Focus On Large Migratory Herbivores, Kina Rebekah Murphy

Biology ETDs

Land-use change, commercial over-harvesting of species, and climate change are recognized as the main drivers of biodiversity loss. As a result, it is estimated that 30% of the planet’s biodiversity may go extinct by 2050. This dissertation focuses on how to mitigate the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity. I focus on large migratory herbivores because they are among the most heavily impacted by global change due to their large home range requirements. Habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting, and human-wildlife conflicts are among the biggest threats to large herbivores and result from land-use change. For this reason, my first chapter focuses …

Biogeography, Interspecific Introgression, And The Evolution Of Hemoglobin Genes In The High Andes: The Evolutionary History Of The South American Siskins (Spinus), Elizabeth Jane Beckman Dec 2016

Biogeography, Interspecific Introgression, And The Evolution Of Hemoglobin Genes In The High Andes: The Evolutionary History Of The South American Siskins (Spinus), Elizabeth Jane Beckman

Biology ETDs

Landscape features, interspecific introgression, and adaptation work in concert to shape the evolutionary history of a clade. Understanding the independent and cumulative consequences of these evolutionary processes on diversification is critical to revealing the origins of extant biodiversity. Studying these processes within rapid radiations, a significant contributor to global biodiversity, can provide powerful insight into the process of diversification. To assess how diversification is shaped by these evolutionary forces, I examined the biogeographic history, patterns of interspecific introgression and adaptation to high elevation in a recent, rapid radiation of finches, the South American siskins (Fringillidae: Spinus). I found that …

Assessing The Climate Change Vulnerability Of Ecosystem Types Of The Southwestern U.S., Francis J. Triepke, Esteban H. Muldavin, Maximillian M. Wahlberg, Timothy K. Lowrey, Donald A. Falk, Megan M. Friggens, Karen E. Bagne

Biology ETDs

Climate change is challenging scientists and decision-makers to understand the complexities of climate change and to predict the related effects at scales relevant to environmental policy and the management of ecosystem services. Extraordinary change in climate, and the ensuing impacts to ecosystem services, are widely anticipated for the southwestern United States. Predicting the vulnerability of Southwest ecosystems and their components has been a priority of natural resource organizations over the past decade. Supplementing vulnerability assessments in the region with geospatial inputs of high thematic and spatial detail has become vital for supporting local analyses, planning, and decisions. In this context …

Memory Effects In Brownian Motion, Random Walks Under Confining Potentials, And Relaxation Of Quantum Systems, Matthew Chase Dec 2016

Memory Effects In Brownian Motion, Random Walks Under Confining Potentials, And Relaxation Of Quantum Systems, Matthew Chase

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation is a report on a number of distinct topics in the field of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics including the evolution of classical as well as quantum systems.

The evolution of an object that is described by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process generalized through a time-nonlocal attraction is considered. The time-nonlocality is taken to be represented in the Langevin description through the presence of memory. Analysis of the Langevin equation is performed for algebraic and delay-type memories. An equivalent \emph{bona-fide} Fokker-Planck equation is constructed.

A random walker subjected to a non-standard confining potential, taken to be a piece-wise linear function, is analyzed. …

An Exploration Of Style Transfer Using Deep Neural Networks, Cameron Y. Smith Nov 2016

An Exploration Of Style Transfer Using Deep Neural Networks, Cameron Y. Smith

Computer Science ETDs

Convolutional Neural Networks and Graphics Processing Units have been at the core of a paradigm shift in computer vision research that some researchers have called `'the algorithmic perception revolution." This thesis presents the implementation and analysis of several techniques for performing artistic style transfer using a Convolutional Neural Network architecture trained for large-scale image recognition tasks. We present an implementation of an existing algorithm for artistic style transfer in images and video. The neural algorithm separates and recombines the style and content of arbitrary images. Additionally, we present an extension of the algorithm to perform weighted artistic style transfer.

Aloha In The Desert: Ideologies Of Ka ʻŌlelo HawaiʻI A Mēheuheu, Violet Lovelena Witt Nov 2016

Aloha In The Desert: Ideologies Of Ka ʻŌlelo HawaiʻI A Mēheuheu, Violet Lovelena Witt

Linguistics ETDs

My study involved sociolinguistic interviewing and the gathering of ethnographic data collected to inform a discussion of three interlaced topics; Language and Culture, Language Ideologies, and Language Maintenance. These topics are discussed through the exploration of ka ʻōlelo hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) in the cultural context of Hula. Hula is defined as a dance with referential movements and gestures that was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the original settlers (Stillman 1998:1). The goal of this study is to build on previous studies of Hawaiian Ideologies (e.g., Wong 1999, Hall 2005, Malone & Shoda-Sutherland 2005, Halualani 2007, and Snyder-Frey 2013), …

Learning And Memory Abnormalities In Mice Deficient In The Rna-Binding Protein Ksrp, Sarah L. Olguin Nov 2016

Learning And Memory Abnormalities In Mice Deficient In The Rna-Binding Protein Ksrp, Sarah L. Olguin

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Post-transcriptional regulation plays a critical role in the function and development of the nervous system; especially in the control of specific subsets of mRNAs localized to dendrites and axons. One such regulatory mechanism is the stabilization or disruption of mRNA through association of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) such as the KH-type splicing regulatory protein (KSRP). We have previously shown that loss of KSRP results in dysregulation of GAP-43 and increased growth of hippocampal neurons in vitro. Therefore, KSRP-/- and KSRP+/- animals were subjected to a battery of behavioral tests including Novel Object Recognition and Trace Fear Conditioning to assess hippocampal …

The Molecular Systematics And Phylogeography Of The Widespread North American Meadow Vole (Microtus Pennsylvanicus), Donavan J. Jackson Nov 2016

The Molecular Systematics And Phylogeography Of The Widespread North American Meadow Vole (Microtus Pennsylvanicus), Donavan J. Jackson

Biology ETDs

The climatic and environmental fluctuations of the Quaternary played an integral role in geographic distribution and genetic structure within many organisms today. Understanding how these historical biogeographic events may have partitioned genetic variation throughout the landscape is critical to forecasting the implications of modern climate change and how animals will respond to projected climate shifts. Through geographic and taxonomically comprehensive sampling, we used multi-locus and species delimitation analyses along with niche modeling methods to investigate the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. The findings of this study highlight the vulnerability and importance that special consideration …

Performance Of Gender Social Status: Social Identity Through Clothes, Fanny M. Hamon Nov 2016

Performance Of Gender Social Status: Social Identity Through Clothes, Fanny M. Hamon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

I focus on the study of the role of the ball gowns in fairy tales, and I argue that Donkey Skin and Cinderella’s civilization process happens through their clothes. I demonstrate that the garments bear considerable historic values in the narratives. The performance they put in place is allowed by the wealth of their dresses.
I apply Butler’s performance theory to show that the performance of the two heroines is the inherent necessity to their social ascent and social recognition. For both heroines, the performance is a strategy to overcome the punitive aspects they underwent in their animal state. The …

Theory And Practice Of Computing With Excitable Dynamics, Alireza Goudarzi Nov 2016

Theory And Practice Of Computing With Excitable Dynamics, Alireza Goudarzi

Computer Science ETDs

Reservoir computing (RC) is a promising paradigm for time series processing. In this paradigm, the desired output is computed by combining measurements of an excitable system that responds to time-dependent exogenous stimuli. The excitable system is called a reservoir and measurements of its state are combined using a readout layer to produce a target output. The power of RC is attributed to an emergent short-term memory in dynamical systems and has been analyzed mathematically for both linear and nonlinear dynamical systems. The theory of RC treats only the macroscopic properties of the reservoir, without reference to the underlying medium it …

Engineering Small Molecule Based Dimerization To Induce Translation And Provide Optogenetic Control, Catherine Wright Nov 2016

Engineering Small Molecule Based Dimerization To Induce Translation And Provide Optogenetic Control, Catherine Wright

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

We wanted to develop a system that combines the spatial control of photoactivation and control of translation to build a tool to spatially control translation in neurons. This kind of tool could be used to investigate the role of spatially controlled translation of any protein in neural behavior. In this way the development and growth of neural processes could be studied to elucidate the mechanisms for spatially sensitive events such as pathfinding, repair, or long-term potentiation.

Chemically induced dimerization was used to install a switch into the activation of translation for specific genes. An abscisic acid (ABA) dependent dimerization of …
