On Numerical Modeling Of Equal Channel Angular Extrusion Of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, Kostiantyn Vasylevskyi, Kateryna I. Miroshnichenko, Stanislav Buklovskyi, Igor I. Tsukrov, Hannah Grover, Douglas Van Citters

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is widely used in biomedical applications, e.g. as a bearing surface in total joint arthroplasty. Recently, equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was proposed as a processing method to achieve higher molecular entanglement and superior mechanical properties of this material. Numerical modeling can be utilized to evaluate the influence of such important manufacturing parameters as the extrusion rate, temperature, geometry of the die, back pressure and friction effects in the ECAE of polyethylenes.
In this paper we focus on the development of efficient FE models of ECAE for UHMWPE. We study the applicability of the …

Nitrate Uptake Enhanced By Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Tropical Montane Streams, Bianca M. Rodriguez-Cardona, Adam S. Wymore, William H. Mcdowell
Nitrate Uptake Enhanced By Availability Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Tropical Montane Streams, Bianca M. Rodriguez-Cardona, Adam S. Wymore, William H. Mcdowell
NRESS Publications
Tropical forests store large amounts of Earth’s terrestrial C, but many tropical montane streams have low dissolved organic matter (DOM). This low availability of energy likely limits certain pathways of inorganic N uptake, as evidenced by the high rates of nitrification and predominance of nitrate (NO3−) in the total pool of dissolved N seen in many tropical montane forests. To explore the influence of DOM availability on tropical stream N cycling, we performed nutrient pulse additions of NO3− with or without an added C source (acetate or urea) in streams of the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. In the absence …

The Quest To Completely Map The World’S Oceans In Support Of Understanding Marine Biodiversity And The Regulatory Barriers We Have Created, Larry A. Mayer, J. Ashley Roach
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
This paper reviews the current poor state of our knowledge of the bathymetry of the seafloor (only approximately 15% has been mapped by modern bathymetric sonars) and discusses the efforts being made under the auspices of the Nippon Foundation gebco Seabed 2030 program to rectify this situation and to produce a publically available, complete map of the ocean basins that can be used to support UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 by 2030. It will be impossible to achieve the targeted level of sustainable development without a comprehensive map of the ocean floor, a fact recognized by the planners of the …

Insect Reproductive Behaviors Are Important Mediators Of Carrion Nutrient Release Into Soil, Brooke K. Woelber-Kastner, Serita D. Frey, Daniel R. Howard, Carrie L. Hall
Faculty Publications
Current declines in terrestrial insect biomass and abundance have raised global concern for the fate of insects and the ecosystem services they provide. However, the ecological and economic contributions of many insects have yet to be quantified. Carrion-specializing invertebrates are important mediators of carrion decomposition; however, the role of their reproductive activities in facilitating this nutrient pulse into ecosystems is poorly understood. Here, we investigate whether insects that sequester carrion belowground for reproduction alter soil biotic and abiotic properties in North American temperate forests. We conducted a field experiment that measured soil conditions in control, surface carrion alone, and beetle-utilized …

The Worst Is Behind Us: News Media Choice And False Optimism In The Summer Of 2020, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford
Faculty Publications
In the summer of 2020, mitigation efforts slowed the first US wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts warned, however, that without coordinated, sustained mitigation—such as testing and tracing, limited travel or gatherings, social distancing and mask wearing—the worst could lie ahead. A July survey found majority (59%) agreement with the expert warnings, while a minority (27%) mistakenly thought that the worst was behind us, or that COVID-19 was not a real problem. Among frequent Fox News and conservative talk radio consumers, however, large majorities (67–80%) held such false optimism or denial views, in contrast with small minorities (9–16%) among public …
