Record-high air temperatures were observed over Greenland in the summer of 2019 and melting of the northern Greenland Ice Sheet was particularly extensive. Here we show, through direct measurements, that near surface ocean temperatures in Sherard Osborn Fjord, northern Greenland, reached 4 °C in August 2019, while in the neighboring Petermann Fjord, they never exceeded 0 °C. We show that this disparity in temperature between the two fjords occurred because thick multi-year sea ice at the entrance of Sherard Osborn Fjord trapped the surface waters inside the fjord, which led to the formation of a warm and fresh surface layer. …

Faculty Publications

The Arctic faces multiple pressures including climate change, shifting demographics, human health risks, social justice imbalances, governance issues, and expanding resource extraction. A convergence of academic disciplines—such as natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, health and medicine—and international perspectives is required to meaningfully contribute to solving the challenges of Arctic peoples and ecosystems. However, successfully carrying out convergent, international research and education remains a challenge. Here, lessons from the planning phase of a convergence research project concerned with the health of Arctic waters developed by the Arctic Science IntegrAtion Quest (ASIAQ) are discussed. We discuss our perspective on the …

Changes In The Employment Status Of People With And Without Disabilities In The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Andrew J. Houtenville, Shreya Paul, Debra L. Brucker

Institute on Disability

Using data from the monthly Current Population Survey, this paper provides monthly employment and unemployment statistics for people with and without disabilities in the United States, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to-date (January 2021). Estimates show that, like workers without disabilities, workers with disabilities experienced unemployment at the beginning of the pandemic and continued to remain engaged in the labor force. Our analysis finds that employment rates dropped from 74.8% to 63.2% for those without disabilities and from 31.1% to 26.4% for those with disabilities between February 2020 and April 2020 but gradually improved in the succeeding months. As …

I’Ll Be Dammed! Public Preferences Regarding Dam Removal In New Hampshire, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Catherine M. Ashcraft, Kevin H. Gardner, Lawrence C. Hamilton

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Decisions about dams, like other environmental conflicts, involve complex trade-offs between different water uses with varying human and ecological impacts. Given the many upcoming dam decisions in New England, an improved understanding of public preferences is needed to steward resources. This research asks (1) What does the public want to see happen with dams? and (2) How do public preferences regarding dam removal vary with demography and politics? We address these questions using data from three random sample statewide telephone polls conducted in New Hampshire over 2018 that asked people for their preferences concerning dam removal versus maintaining dams for …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The 3.3 million km2 marine ecosystem around the North Pole, defined as the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO), is a blind spot on the map of the world’s fish stocks. The CAO essentially comprises the permanently ice-covered deep basins and ridges outside the continental shelves, and is only accessible by ice-breakers. Traditional trawling for assessing fish stocks is impossible under the thick pack ice, and coherent hydroacoustic surveys are unachievable due to ice-breaking noise. Consequently, nothing is known about the existence of any pelagic fish stocks in the CAO, although juveniles of Boreogadus saida richly occur at the surface associated with …

Share Of Childless Adults Eligible For Eitc Triples Under American Rescue Plan, Jess Carson Apr 2021

Share Of Childless Adults Eligible For Eitc Triples Under American Rescue Plan, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this fact sheet, author Jess Carson explores how changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit in 2021 affect childless tax filers.

Findings show that the share of childless adults who can claim a credit has tripled under the new provisions, and that the biggest driver of widened access is lowering the minimum age for eligibility. Childless filers in different areas of the country and of different racial-ethnic groups all have wider access, but gains are larger in some groups than others.

Policymakers considering whether to retain all or part of the EITC expansions in future years should consider how …

A Nurse-Led, School-Based Obesity Improvement And Prevention Program: Physical Activity, Nutrition, And Psychological Interventions In Second-Grade Students, Kaitlyn Williams

M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership

Childhood obesity is a national healthcare crisis. Obese children are at increased risk for medical, behavioral, emotional, and psychological complications. This school-based program will educate second-grade students about adopting healthier habits. An educational program was developed to support the students with three specific components: physical activity, nutrition, and psychological counseling, capitalizing on positive, trusting relationships between the teachers, school nurse, and students. The goal is to help develop healthier habits by increasing physical activity, providing guidance for better nutrition, and decrease BMI. Parents will be supported and provided tools for the ability to sustain this in the home. After completion …

The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low Apr 2021

The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low

M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership

New graduate nurses represent ten percent of the current nursing workforce and with the nursing shortage, retention of these nurses is key for sustaining and growing the labor pool. Furthermore, with almost twenty-five percent of new nurses leaving their positions within two years of starting, we must address the successful transition to practice. The move from student to graduate nurse can be stressful and difficult, but when combined with pandemic with reduced or no hands-on clinical experiences during their last year of school, there is greater pressure for organizations to provide orientation that addresses the specific needs of these new …

Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted Apr 2021

Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted

M.S. in Health Care Management

This project centralizes around the stigma of communicating in the healthcare system, and using policies and procedures as the foundation, when it should be the employees who hold them up. Having worked in healthcare for nearly twelve years, an issue I have always wanted to address is the way we communicate to staff. This translates into training them in a new way as well. While it is important to have rules and protocols are clear as possible, we as leaders must understand that people come from different culture, backgrounds, experiences, generations, etc. So, we need to keep that in mind …

Every city wants and needs a functional, reliable radio system that allows for interoperability across multiple departments. Improved radio communication will help with emergency responders, but also school officials, water department, traffic control. Throughout the course of an extreme event, it can be crucial that these resources have rapid and immediate communication channels. Implementing an upgraded radio system that allows for redundancy, interoperability, and scalability for performance updates over many years to come will benefit the departments as well as citizens and visitors to the area. Our consulting firm was tasked with researching the needs of the city, identifying the …
