A Nurse-Led, School-Based Obesity Improvement And Prevention Program: Physical Activity, Nutrition, And Psychological Interventions In Second-Grade Students, Kaitlyn Williams
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
Childhood obesity is a national healthcare crisis. Obese children are at increased risk for medical, behavioral, emotional, and psychological complications. This school-based program will educate second-grade students about adopting healthier habits. An educational program was developed to support the students with three specific components: physical activity, nutrition, and psychological counseling, capitalizing on positive, trusting relationships between the teachers, school nurse, and students. The goal is to help develop healthier habits by increasing physical activity, providing guidance for better nutrition, and decrease BMI. Parents will be supported and provided tools for the ability to sustain this in the home. After completion …
The Development Of A Pilot Program For A Standardized New Graduate Nurse Orientation Process To Support The Transition To Practice During Covid-19, Jennifer Low
M. S. in Nursing Health Care Leadership
New graduate nurses represent ten percent of the current nursing workforce and with the nursing shortage, retention of these nurses is key for sustaining and growing the labor pool. Furthermore, with almost twenty-five percent of new nurses leaving their positions within two years of starting, we must address the successful transition to practice. The move from student to graduate nurse can be stressful and difficult, but when combined with pandemic with reduced or no hands-on clinical experiences during their last year of school, there is greater pressure for organizations to provide orientation that addresses the specific needs of these new …

Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted
Subjective Communication: A New Training Method, William Plaisted
M.S. in Health Care Management
This project centralizes around the stigma of communicating in the healthcare system, and using policies and procedures as the foundation, when it should be the employees who hold them up. Having worked in healthcare for nearly twelve years, an issue I have always wanted to address is the way we communicate to staff. This translates into training them in a new way as well. While it is important to have rules and protocols are clear as possible, we as leaders must understand that people come from different culture, backgrounds, experiences, generations, etc. So, we need to keep that in mind …

M. S. in Project Management
Event planning, in many ways, is the same as any other project. Both have a valuable team, lists of deadlines, road bumps, and the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment when it is all over. One of the biggest events to plan is a wedding. Although every type of wedding is unique in its own way, the average wedding takes approximately twelve to eighteen months to plan. This can be a huge undertaking for many individuals who still keep to their regular schedules. This is where event planners come in. An event or wedding planner is a professional who assists with the …

Remote Work: Building A Framework For Success, Charmane Sablock
M.S. in Leadership
The recent COVID19 pandemic has turned the word remote work into a business buzz phrase. While some businesses embraced remote work before the pandemic, many organizations needed to make quick decisions implementing a remote workforce as the pandemic unfolded and required them to send employees home to work during Stay at Home orders to insure employee safety through social distancing. This research is focused on both the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a remote work model within an organization. While there are studies reporting aspects of employee performance that improved, there were also challenges noted with performance of individuals and …

Understanding Interpersonal Trust And Task-Unrelated Thought Through Computer-Mediated Health Conversations, Tyler Stetson
Inquiry Journal Spring 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many healthcare professionals to transition to digital telehealth platforms for patient visits, making interpersonal trust more difficult to achieve. My study examined the relationship between task-unrelated thought (TUT), likability, and interpersonal trust in medically related conversations. Two questions were asked for this study: (1) Is the level of trust and likability between two chat participants related to the frequency of TUT during computer mediated conversation? and (2) What features of language are associated with TUT, trust, and likability in a computer-mediated telehealth environment? Participants chatted online via an instant message platform about personal remedies for the …

Family health is an emerging practice area in occupational therapy that has potential to improve overall family health and participation in daily activities. Families raising children with autism may experience challenges that families raising typically developing children may not experience, and occupational therapy has been shown to improve both child and family outcomes. This study seeks to determine the preliminary effectiveness of the Healthy Families Flourish Program, a ten-session occupational therapy intervention program delivered via telehealth to support families raising school-aged children with autism. Four New Hampshire families were recruited for participation in this study. Weekly sessions took place and …
Nuclear Physics Applications Through The Lens Of Undergraduate Research, Tristan Anderson
Nuclear Physics Applications Through The Lens Of Undergraduate Research, Tristan Anderson
Inquiry Journal Spring 2021
Whether you know it or not, nuclear-based technologies are pervasive in our daily lives. Despite the field's politicized history, nuclear physics is a great thing—and its non-weaponized applications extend harmlessly and helpfully beyond the walls of a laboratory. In this commentary, I give an overview of a subfield in nuclear physics that investigates the role of nuclear spin within the nuclear medium. I then branch into a discussion of some of my research on spin that I have done in the University of New Hampshire's Polarized Target Group and relate my work's application to medical technologies (external to UNH). From …

Sexuality And Regional Dialects In Southern New Hampshire, Hayden Stinson
Sexuality And Regional Dialects In Southern New Hampshire, Hayden Stinson
Inquiry Journal Spring 2021
Social identity is complex and multifaceted. While census-like data has an important place in sociological research, everyone interacts with their social categorization uniquely. To bring this into focus in the field of linguistics, I conducted research on the relationship between regional dialects and gay identity. Using data from interviews that I conducted with two twenty-two-year-old gay men from southern New Hampshire, I followed in a line of research that focuses on the performative nature of social identity. I reached two particularly interesting findings. First, the participants used a “gayer-sounding” /s/ sound in a reading task than in a question-and-answer task. …

Learning To Code Human Behavior, Jennika Mannesto
Inquiry Journal Spring 2021
By participating in two research projects in the field of human development and family studies at the University of New Hampshire, I have gained lifelong observational skills that will be valuable in my future teaching career. Through the Mommy and Me project I have become proficient in using the Q-sort method to code observable behavior. Through Project Advancing Children’s Museum Engagement (Project ACME) I used videotaped interactions of families in a children’s museum to learn about the types of play children engaged in and how that related to gender. I created my own coding scheme for this project to code …

We have adopted the newly developed technique of growing cationic clusters in size-to-charge selected helium nanodroplets (HNDs), with subsequent removal of helium in a collision cell, to record high-resolution mass spectra of Nen+. Growth in singly charged HNDs leads to mass spectra that feature the same anomalies in the cluster ion abundance as in previous work, namely maxima at n = 14, 21, 55/56, 75. Several other, weaker but statistically significant anomalies are observed at n = 9, 26, 29, 33, 35, 69, 82, 89. However, when neon clusters are grown in larger HNDs, which are likely to be multiply …
