Single But Not Solitary: A Call For Nuance In The Study Emerging Adult Singlehood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler Jamison
Single But Not Solitary: A Call For Nuance In The Study Emerging Adult Singlehood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler Jamison
Faculty Publications
Both research and theory demonstrate that single adults are not a homogeneous group. However, scholars continue to rely on participants to self-identify their relationship status from a list that includes multiple forms of romantic involvement (e.g., casual dating, committed relationship, engaged, married), but only one category of non-involvement: “single.” This approach is especially limiting when studying emerging adults, who are often exploring different forms of sexual and romantic engagement. Consequently, we developed a two-step approach that contextualizes singlehood through the romantic and sexual activities of self-reported single emerging adults. Across three samples of U.S. emerging adults, we found that about …

Women In The Woods: A Needs Assessment Approach To Understanding Women Forestland Owners And Managers In New Hampshire, Amy Gaudreau
UNH Cooperative Extension
Women-owned and managed forests provide diverse public values, including wildlife habitat, forest products, water quality, climate mitigation, and recreation. However, many women may lack the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make informed stewardship decisions and effectively manage their forestland. Women in the Woods, a project of the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension (UNHCE), NH Timberland Owners Association (NHTOA), and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF), seeks to support women landowners, managers, communities, and natural resource professionals across New Hampshire. Women in the Woods uses a needs-based approach to develop and provide skills-based training and assistance …

New Hampshire residents remain pessimistic about the state and national economies and few report positive developments in their personal finances or expect good economic conditions in the future. Most Granite Staters say they have confidence in small businesses in the state but most say they have little or no trust in large national businesses located outside of the state.

By using best management practices, farmers can greatly reduce or eliminate problems arising from odors and flies, pesticide drift, contamination of surface and ground waters, and damage to neighboring crops. Following best management practices can help eliminate problems that arise between farming activities and other land uses in urban environments.

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The full extent of the largest cold-water coral (CWC) mound province thus far discovered has been recently revealed through multibeam sonar surveys completed during a multi-year exploration campaign on the Blake Plateau offshore of the southeastern U.S. CWC mounds in this region form distinct bumps or pinnacles (composed of slope, ridge, and peak features) readily observable in multibeam bathymetry data and were mapped in depth ranges spanning approximately 350-900 m.
Bathymetric data from 31 multibeam sonar mapping surveys were synthesized and used to generate a standardized geomorphic classification of the region in order to delineate and quantify CWC mound habitats. …

Soils store more carbon than other terrestrial ecosystems1,2. How soil organic carbon (SOC) forms and persists remains uncertain1,3, which makes it challenging to understand how it will respond to climatic change3,4. It has been suggested that soil microorganisms play an important role in SOC formation, preservation and loss5,6,7. Although microorganisms affect the accumulation and loss of soil organic matter through many pathways4,6,8,9,10,11, microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) is an integrative metric that can capture the balance of these processes12,13. Although CUE has the potential to act as a predictor of variation in SOC storage, the role of CUE in SOC …

Permanent Supportive Housing As A Solution To Homelessness, Antonio Serna
Permanent Supportive Housing As A Solution To Homelessness, Antonio Serna
Carsey Publications
Homelessness in the United States has grown into a crisis, and those with disabling conditions, such as a physical disability, substance use disorders, or behavioral/mental health disorders, are disproportionately at risk. Prior research in Boston found that in three-quarters of shelter stays in the city between 2014 and 2018, the person was recorded as having a disability. The susceptibility of this group to homelessness and chronic homelessness is partly because disabilities correlate with lower incomes and job insecurity, which pose a challenge to maintaining long-term housing. It is for this reason that permanent supportive housing (PSH)—housing that is paired with …
