Increasingly, cover crops are being adopted for the purpose of improving soil health, yet the timescale and magnitude by which living annual cover crops might modify soil chemical and biological aspects of soil health is not well understood. At the same time, there is growing interest among farmers in cover crop mixtures due to perceptions that species-rich cover crop communities will enhance soil health relative to monocultures. In a field experiment in southeast New Hampshire, we investigated how groups of cover crops grown as monocultures and mixtures for specific seasonal niches (winter/spring, summer, and fall) influenced levels of soil nitrogen …

Effects Of Atlantic Butterfish (Peprilus Triacanthus) In Diets Of Common Terns (Sterna Hirundo): A Case Study Of Climate Change Effects In The Gulf Of Maine, Olivia A. Smith, Elizabeth C. Craig
Effects Of Atlantic Butterfish (Peprilus Triacanthus) In Diets Of Common Terns (Sterna Hirundo): A Case Study Of Climate Change Effects In The Gulf Of Maine, Olivia A. Smith, Elizabeth C. Craig
Faculty Publications
Climate change and associated shifts in marine prey communities can alter food availability for foraging seabirds. This issue is illustrated in the Gulf of Maine by the northward shift of Atlantic butterfish (Peprilus triacanthus; hereafter butterfish) and their subsequent increase in seabird diets. Here, we examine effects of butterfish in diets of the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), a threatened species in this region. Our objectives were to evaluate butterfish suitability for tern chick diet through observing handling time and feeding success, to examine effects of butterfish on tern chick growth, and to explore signs of adaptive foraging in adults. The …

New Hampshire Timber Harvesting Laws Guide, Steven S. Roberge, Mike Gagnon, Unh Cooperative Extension
UNH Cooperative Extension
New Hampshire has laws and regulations designed to encourage responsible timber harvesting and minimize environmental impacts of logging. Landowners, loggers, and foresters have the responsibility to know and understand New Hampshire’s timber harvesting laws. In addition, municipal officials have the authority and responsibility to work with state agencies to ensure that these laws are consistently enforced.
This publication is intended to assist municipal officials, landowners, and natural resource professionals working in New Hampshire’s forests.

Three Years Of Record High Mortality And Low Fertility Leave Many States With More Deaths Than Births, Kenneth M. Johnson
Three Years Of Record High Mortality And Low Fertility Leave Many States With More Deaths Than Births, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this data snapshot, Senior Demographer Kenneth Johnson reports that with Covid-induced mortality at record highs and continuing low fertility during the past three years, U.S. births exceeded deaths by the smallest margin in more than a century. Such widespread natural decline is unprecedented. At least 22 states had a natural decline in each of the three pandemic years. Prior to the pandemic, the most states with more deaths than births in a year was 5 in 2019. There will be fewer states with more deaths than births in 2023 if the recent reductions in Covid deaths persist. But many …

A Path To Conventional Equity For Cdfis: Cdfi Equity Project Report, Charles Tansey, Michael E. Swack
A Path To Conventional Equity For Cdfis: Cdfi Equity Project Report, Charles Tansey, Michael E. Swack
Carsey Publications
In this report designed to serve the Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) sector, authors Charles Tansey and Michael Swack describe a step-by-step blueprint for accessing private equity in Stage One and conventional equity in the public market in Stage Two through participating CDFIs. In addition to providing a blueprint, the report documents the affirmation that a portion of CDFI equity can be—and should be—self-sustaining. It also demonstrates how this equity can be widely accessible by the broader CDFI industry over time.

Most Granite Staters Have 4th Of July Plans, Plurality See Out-Of-State Tourists As Net Positive For Nh 6/26/2023, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
More than four-fifths of New Hampshire residents plan to celebrate the 4th of July holiday in some way and more than three-quarters plan to travel on a vacation this summer. Three-quarters of state residents say that out-of-state tourists contribute a lot or some to traffic and noise in their local area but about the same amount also say they contribute a lot or some to the local economy and a plurality say they have a positive effect on New Hampshire overall.
