Deep Dives And High Tissue Density Increase Mean Dive Costs In California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus), Mason R. Cole, Colin Ware, Elizabeth A. Mchuron, Daniel P. Costa, Paul J. Ponganis, Birgitte I. Mcdonald Jul 2023

Deep Dives And High Tissue Density Increase Mean Dive Costs In California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus), Mason R. Cole, Colin Ware, Elizabeth A. Mchuron, Daniel P. Costa, Paul J. Ponganis, Birgitte I. Mcdonald

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Diving is central to the foraging strategies of many marine mammals and seabirds. Still, the effect of dive depth on foraging cost remains elusive because energy expenditure is difficult to measure at fine temporal scales in wild animals. We used depth and acceleration data from eight lactating California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) to model body density and investigate the effect of dive depth and tissue density on rates of energy expenditure. We calculated body density in 5 s intervals from the rate of gliding descent. We modeled body density across depth in each dive, revealing high tissue densities and diving …

Primary Issues: Nh Insists First-In-Nation Primary Stays First; Confident Votes Will Be Accurately Counted 7/20/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Six in ten New Hampshire residents support a New Hampshire law that requires the state's Presidential Primary to be held before any similar contest. More than four in five likely New Hampshire primary voters are confident that their vote in upcoming elections will be accurately counted. Undeclared voters, a key voting block who can vote in either party's primary in the state, lean towards participating in the Republican primary over the Democratic primary featuring a sitting President.

New Englanders' Use Of Child Care Varies By Income, Even Among Working Households, Jess Carson Jul 2023

New Englanders' Use Of Child Care Varies By Income, Even Among Working Households, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this data snapshot, author Jess Carson reports that data from the U.S. Census Bureau collected between January and May 2023 show that access to child care remains uneven. Among New England households with a child under age five, 71.1 percent had used at least some child care in the past seven days. However, lower-income households are less likely to use care than higher-income households. While child care use is more prevalent among low-income households with a working adult, rates are still below those in high-income households. Findings suggest that in low-income New England households, access to early care opportunities—as …

New Hampshire Democratic Primary Voters Unenthusiastic But Back Biden 7/19/2023, Unh Survey Center Jul 2023

New Hampshire Democratic Primary Voters Unenthusiastic But Back Biden 7/19/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Seven in ten likely 2024 New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary voters currently back President Joe Biden. Half of Biden supporters are not enthusiastic if Biden is the 2024 Democratic nominee, but most supporters plan to vote for Biden even if he does not appear on the ballot. There is little interest in challengers Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or Marianne Williamson, both of whom are unpopular among likely Democratic primary voters and few Biden supporters even consider either Kennedy or Williamson to be their second choice.

Trump Maintains Lead Over Desantis In New Hampshire Gop 2024 Race 7/18/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Former President Donald Trump continues to lead his GOP rivals in the New Hampshire 2024 Republican presidential primary. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is his closest rival but trails Trump by double digits. Trump supporters are far more likely than DeSantis voters to say they have made up their mind. South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is the most personally well-liked candidate while former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is very unpopular and is most likely to be mentioned by likely primary voters as the candidate they would not vote for under any circumstances.

New England Households Rely On A Mix Of Child Care Arrangements, Jess Carson Jul 2023

New England Households Rely On A Mix Of Child Care Arrangements, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this data snapshot, author Jess Carson reports that data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau between January and May 2023 show that 70 percent of New England households with a child under five use child care, and more than one-third of those rely on multiple arrangements. Findings suggest that even having access to a formal slot in center- or home-based care may not be sufficient for meeting families’ needs. Finding the right type and mix of care is complex and underscores the need for flexible and diverse child care options for New England families.

Gender (In)Equity In Global Mental Health Research: A Call To Action, The Women In Global Mental Health Research Group, Kelly Rose-Clarke Jul 2023

Gender (In)Equity In Global Mental Health Research: A Call To Action, The Women In Global Mental Health Research Group, Kelly Rose-Clarke

Faculty Publications

In this commentary, we build on work by Gurung and colleagues which highlighted gender inequity in the global mental health research workforce in Nepal (Gurung et al., 2021). We seek to increase awareness of the under-representation of women in global mental health research and its consequences, and we call for change. By women, we refer to all people who identify as women, including trans people. The commentary is informed by conversations with women who are global mental health researchers in the Global North and South at various stages of their careers.
