Management Of Aphids On Winter High Tunnel Crops, Samantha A. Willden, Allison Zablah, Anna Wallingford, Laura L. Ingwell Apr 2024

Management Of Aphids On Winter High Tunnel Crops, Samantha A. Willden, Allison Zablah, Anna Wallingford, Laura L. Ingwell

Faculty Publications

High tunnels offer several benefits to specialty crop growers including crop protection and season extension. Although crops are actively grown in high tunnels during the winter, few management recommendations exist for winter pests that are actively feeding and reproducing in this protected environment. This study evaluated the efficacy of three commercially available predators used for the augmentative biological control of aphids, Adalia bipunctata, Orius insidiosus, and Chrysoperla carnea, in combination with OMRI-approved pesticides labeled for aphids on spinach and strawberry. Pesticides included PyGanic (pyrethrin), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Sil-MATRIX (Potassium silicate). Laboratory and field experiments indicate high survival of biocontrol agents …

Exploring The Impact Of The Aging Effect On Inferred Properties Of Solar Coronal Mass Ejections, F Regnault, Nada Al-Haddad, Noé Lugaz, Charles J. Farrugia, Bin Zhuang, Wenyuan Yu, A Strugarek Apr 2024

Exploring The Impact Of The Aging Effect On Inferred Properties Of Solar Coronal Mass Ejections, F Regnault, Nada Al-Haddad, Noé Lugaz, Charles J. Farrugia, Bin Zhuang, Wenyuan Yu, A Strugarek

Faculty Publications

In situ measurements of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) when they pass over an interplanetary probe are one of the main ways we directly measure their properties. However, such in situ profiles are subject to several observational constraints that are still poorly understood. This work aims at quantifying one of them, namely, the aging effect, using a CME simulated with a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical code. The synthetic in situ profile and the instantaneous profile of the magnetic field strength differ more from each other when taken close to the Sun than far from it. Moreover, out of three properties we compute in …

Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are charged particles that reach the heliosphere almost isotropically in a wide energy range. In the inner heliosphere, the GCR flux is modulated by solar activity so that only energetic GCRs reach the lower layers of the solar atmosphere. In this work, we propose that high-energy GCRs can be used to explore the solar magnetic fields at low coronal altitudes. We used GCR data collected by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov observatory to construct maps of GCR flux coming from the Sun’s sky direction and studied the observed GCR deficit, known as Sun shadow (SS), over a …

Sun Goes Out Over New Hampshire, Granite Staters Took Note 4/25/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Fifteen percent of New Hampshire residents traveled to get a better look at the April 2024 solar eclipse and another 48% took time out of their day to view. Among those who traveled to see the eclipse, half spent more than five hours traveling but nearly all said they were satisfied with their trip. Many who did not travel to see the eclipse said that traffic was the reason.

The Sun Went Out And Vermonters Saw, Nearly All Who Traveled Satisfied With Trip 4/25/2024, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Four-fifths of Vermont residents took the time to view the April 8th solar eclipse and 17% traveled outside of their local area to see it. Most Vermonters, particularly those who purposefully took time to view the eclipse, saw a total eclipse, while a small number saw only a partial eclipse. Nearly all of those who traveled to see the eclipse were satisfied with their trip.

Memory In Literature: Power & The Literary Canon, Chloe Alice Rattee Apr 2024

Memory In Literature: Power & The Literary Canon, Chloe Alice Rattee

The Hugemanities Project Big Contest

In my project I explored how cultural memory applied to literature can open up the discussion to talk about how power is wielded by those that create a canon, literary or religious. I used William Blake's work to discuss how few educated, powerful people's interpretation of something so difficult and massive at The Bible can cut out perspectives or opinions that they don't want included in their teachings.

Voices Of Contention: Cotton Mather's View Of Hannah Duston And Its Enduring Impact, Audrey Mcallister, Lily Mcdonough

The Hugemanities Project Big Contest

This project dives into the complex intersection of Puritan beliefs, underlying racism, and community cohesion as seen through the lens of Cotton Mather's perspective on Hannah Duston. By examining his writings and sermons, this project seeks to unravel the complexities of Mather's worldview and the enduring impact of his interpretations on the historical narrative surrounding Hannah Duston and her legacy. Ion Heating By A Fast Magnetosonic Turbulence In The Solar Corona, Sergei A. Markovskii, Bernard J. Vasquez Apr 2024

Ion Heating By A Fast Magnetosonic Turbulence In The Solar Corona, Sergei A. Markovskii, Bernard J. Vasquez

Faculty Publications

Observational data at heliocentric distances of tens of solar radii suggest that fast magnetosonic modes make up a considerable fraction of the solar wind fluctuations. Furthermore, this fraction appears to increase closer to the Sun. We carry out three-dimensional kinetic simulations with particle ions and fluid electrons to evaluate the proton and alpha-particle heating produced by the damping of the fast waves in the solar corona. Realistic parameters at 5 solar radii, including the fluctuation amplitude, are used. We show that, due to the cyclotron resonance, the alphas are heated preferentially perpendicularly to the magnetic field and much more strongly …
